Governor Healey Nominates Judge Sarah Joss to Superior Court
BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura Healey nominated Associate Justice of the District Court Sarah Joss to serve as an Associate Justice of the Superior Court. The nomination will now be considered by the Governor’s Council for confirmation.
“I am confident that Judge Joss will continue to serve with distinction, bringing decades of legal experience and expertise from the District Court, the Massachusetts Probation Service and the Attorney General’s Office to the Superior Court,” said Governor Maura Healey. “I know she will continue to uphold the law with fairness, integrity and sound judgment.”
“I look forward to working with the Governor’s Council to confirm Judge Joss so that she can continue serving the courts and the people of Massachusetts,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll.
The Superior Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction for Massachusetts and is committed to delivering high quality justice in a timely and fair manner in accordance with the rule of law. The Court's 82 justices sit in 20 courthouses in all 14 counties. The Superior Court has original jurisdiction in civil actions over $50,000 and in matters where equitable relief is sought. It also has original jurisdiction in actions including labor disputes where injunctive relief is sought, exclusive authority to convene medical malpractice tribunals, appellate jurisdiction over certain administrative proceedings, and may hold sittings for naturalization in any city or town. The Superior Court also has exclusive original jurisdiction of first-degree murder cases and original jurisdiction of all other crimes.

About the Nominee:
Judge Sarah Joss was appointed as an Associate Justice of the District Court in 2022. Judge Joss primarily sits in the Lynn District Court and also serves as a member of the District Court’s Appellate Division. Prior to her appointment, Judge Joss served as the Deputy Commissioner for Legal Services and Legal Counsel for the Massachusetts Probation Service. In that role, she litigated matters in the trial and appellate courts, supervised legal staff, developed trainings, and advised court leaders and field personnel on legal and policy issues. Previously, Judge Joss spent more than a decade as an Assistant Attorney General in the Trial Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, where she represented state agencies in a broad range of litigation matters, including civil rights, employment, and tort cases. She began her legal career as an Associate at Foley Hoag LLP. Judge Joss earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.
