Greentown Labs newsletter /MIT ClimateTech

Dear Friends of Greentown,

It was delightful to see so many of you in our incubators earlier this month for our annual Climatetech Summit—an event where we not only dig into the biggest topics in climatetech entrepreneurship and deployment, but open our labs and showcase the incredible technologies our 200+ members are developing.

Missed the summit, or want to rewatch a startup’s pitch? You can check out recaps of our Boston and Houston events, complete with session recordings and photo galleries, and read the Boston Globe’s take on what makes the Climatetech Summit so special.

At the summit, we shared that Greentown and Browning the Green Space (BGS) were getting ready to launch Year 2 of the Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders Program (ACCEL)—our accelerator for BIPOC-led climatetech startups. Applications went live this week and run through Jan. 5, 2024

  • Greentown and BGS are seeking applications from startups at TRL 1-4 that are developing climate solutions for the electricity, transportation, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, and resiliency + adaptation sectors.
  • We’re eager to support another cohort of startups in this exciting accelerator; check out the Year 1 participants and learn how ACCEL supported their growth.
  • More details can be found in English here and Spanish here

In another piece of news about our efforts to make the climatetech industry more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, we’re excited to announce that our Houston incubator received a grant from the Economic Development Administration that will allow us to expand our Investor Program’s EDIJ efforts, in partnership with the Ion. We’ll share more about this important work in the coming months!

Grant funding like this and generous donations from folks across the climatetech ecosystem allow us to carry out our mission of supporting founders and catalyzing climate solutions through entrepreneurship, partnership, and collaboration.

As Giving Tuesday approaches, we’re asking for your partnership in helping get climatetech startups’ crucial solutions out into the world. Your donation can help us provide mentorship and learning opportunities for founders, support their prototyping needs, connect them with crucial software and business resources, and more.

As always, we thank you for your commitment to climate action and support of climatetech solutions!

Warmly,
The Greentown Labs Team

Dear Friends of Greentown Labs,

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Greentown Labs Climatetech Summit earlier this month! We were thrilled to see hundreds gather in each of our incubators—and many more online—to celebrate climatetech entrepreneurship, explore collaborative solutions for commercialization, and make crucial connections across the ecosystem.

In Boston, we dove into the Inflation Reduction Act, equity in Massachusetts’ climate action, and advice from investor-startup pairs, while in Houston, we zeroed in on the city’s role in the energy transition—from the ability to rapidly commercialize climate solutions, to the effectiveness of startup-corporate collaborations, to the region’s potential to be a global hydrogen hub. Both events featured startup showcases with our incredible members, lightning pitches, investor networking sessions, and more.

Couldn’t make it, or want to revisit a panel? Check out recaps of the Houston and Boston events here and here, complete with session recordings and photo galleries. And a special shoutout to our event sponsors—CapgeminiEnelChevron, and Somernova—who helped make the summit possible!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you want to engage with or support our community. Thank you for your commitment to climate action!

Warmly,

ICYMI: New Program Announcements

This fall, we were excited to announce two highly collaborative new programs: one to support BIPOC founders and one to foster Texas’s student-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders (ACCEL), an accelerator from Greentown and Browning the Green Space, is seeking applications from climatetech startups with founding and executive teams that are primarily made up of BIPOC leaders. This recurring, year-long program combines startup acceleration with a curated curriculum, incubation at Greentown, and extensive mentorship from our networks of industry experts.
The Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E)—a collaboration among Greentown, MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship, and universities across Texas—will train and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs to lead the energy transition and to share in the massive economic opportunity it entails, implementing lessons learned from building a successful university entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Greater Boston area.

Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

It was a busy few months leading up to our annual Climatetech Summit on Nov. 2, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome—thank you to all who attended and participated! Over 300 attendees convened at our Houston incubator (with a few hundred more tuning in virtually!) to discuss, learn, and build connections to power the energy transition.
From startup pitches by members including Sustonable and Kanin Energy, to panels starring Houston innovators from the Renewable Energy Alliance (REAL) Houston, the HX Venture Fund, United Airlines, and more, the day’s exploration of climatetech commercialization was a major success, and we’re already eager to bring together climate stakeholders for next year. Special thank you to our summit sponsors Capgemini, Chevron, Enel, and Somernova for making such a feat possible! Read more about this year’s summit here.
After a morning of pitches, panels, and discussions, members attending the Climatetech Summit had the opportunity to showcase their work and network with climate stakeholders in our lab space.

The Climatetech Summit isn’t all we’ve been working on to advance climatetech this fall, though: late last month, we were thrilled to announce the launch of the Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E)! A collaboration with MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship and several Texas universities (Rice UniversityTexas A&M UniversityPrairie View A&M UniversityUniversity of Houston, and the University of Texas at Austin), TEX-E will provide students access to Greentown’s mentorship, events, and resources in order to empower them to become the next generation of climatetech leaders. We’re excited to see the amazing connections this program forges and to explore welcoming additional universities into the network! Read more about what the program entails here.

We are also thrilled to announce that our roster of accelerator programs is growing with the launch of the Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders (ACCEL) Program, a collaboration with Boston-based organization Browning the Green Space (BGS)! ACCEL is a year-long accelerator program for climatetech entrepreneurs who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of color (BIPOC) that aims to provide underrepresented climate innovators with resources that often are not accessible due to structural inequities.

Climatetech has historically not been a diverse field, and we saw an opportunity to address it and promote racial equity in a partnership with BGS, an organization with a stellar track record of advancing DEI in the clean energy space. We can’t wait to partner with BGS and work with some all-star climatetech entrepreneurs in this program—be sure to apply by Dec. 23, share the opportunity with your network, and sign up for updates.

Warmly,
The Greentown Houston Team

Our Head of Houston Incubator and VP of Innovation Juliana Garaizar kicked off the Climatetech Summit with a welcome to the Greentown Houston facility.

Thank You to Our Partners 🌍

Dear Friends of Greentown Labs,

Cement is ubiquitous in our world, from our buildings, to our bridges, to our roads. Factor in that cement is responsible for eight percent of global CO2 emissions, and it becomes clear that decarbonizing this material is a critical step in decarbonizing the global economy.

But no single solution for zero-carbon cement exists other than post-combustion carbon capture—until our member Sublime Systems

Sublime’s technology is on track to reduce 90 percent of cement’s CO2 emissions, a feat that could fundamentally shape the future of the manufacturing industry.

Sublime is just one of more than 200 startups in our community, each of which is developing groundbreaking solutions to decarbonize the global economy and build resilient communities. There’s Ivys Energy Solutions, a provider of hydrogen refueling stations for fleet applications, and Daniel Consulting Group, a battery technology consulting firm focused on all aspects of battery testing and development—both of which you can read about in this spotlight on how we work with startups to promote safety and support their prototyping.

Interested in agtech? This summer’s Sector Pitch Day highlighted our agriculture startups, including Lignium Energy, which transforms cow manure into combustion pellets, and Gaia AI, which collects high-quality biomass data in forests, helping landowners, project developers, and investors understand the carbon stock and timber content of their land. Learn about these members and others in the event recap.

We work with these startups day in and day out, so we know how incredible they are—and we want to introduce them to you. This fall is chock-full of opportunities to meet, engage with, and support our startups, whether you’re an investorcorporate executive, or job seeker. Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

While we are in the thick of summer here in Houston, Greentown can’t help but be in a fall state of mind, as we are excited to announce registration is open for our 2022 Climatetech Summit! On Nov. 2 and 3, we’re inviting you into our Houston and Somerville incubators for a day of hands-on exploration with our 200+ startups and their climatetech solutions; keynotes and sessions featuring leaders across climatetech, finance, policy, and justice; and networking with key climate-action stakeholders. Register here before Sept. 1 to get early bird pricing!

After last month’s kickoff event for Year 2 of the Carbon to Value (C2V) Initiative (a recording of the event can be found here) at Greentown Houston, eight startups have been selected for the second year of the carbontech accelerator program: Aluminum TechnologiesCarbon Upcycling TechnologiesCarbonova CorpecoLockedFull Cycle BioplasticsLydianMolecule Works, and Osmoses. The C2V Initiative is a multi-year collaboration among the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering (UFL), Greentown Labs, and Fraunhofer USA, supported by NYSERDA and in partnership with Year 2 Cohort Champion Fluor Corporation

Speaking of accelerators, we have two Greentown Go programs currently accepting applications. Go Make 2022 is looking for startups that have solutions to decarbonize the manufacturing sector, which contributes 31 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions; applications are due Aug. 9. And just this week, our Go Move 2022 program launched! If you are a startup developing material innovations for automotive efficiency and shared and future mobility or materials and process innovations for recycling, apply here by Sept. 30.

We also want to invite you to our next Investor Speaker Series: Access to Success at Greentown Houston on Sept. 14. Underrepresented founders in climatetech face unique and growing challenges to accessing investors and fundraising in order to scale their companies and push forward the energy transition. At Greentown, we are working to bridge that gap. Join us for a pitch competition, a startup showcase, and a networking lunch.

Lastly, tonight we are hosting a special Transition On Tap in collaboration with our partner Vinson & Elkins. Come for a presentation on legal considerations in investing by Jimmy Chalk and Wes Jones, and stay for a networking hour, including a tequila tasting with Tequila Heffe. We hope to see you tonight!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you want to get involved with or support our community. Thank you for your commitment to climate action!

Warmly,
The Greentown Houston Team

Thank You to Our Founding + Grand Opening Partners 🌎

Dear Friends of Greentown,

At Greentown Labs, we firmly believe that building a thriving, diverse, and just climatetech workforce is key to deploying climate solutions. Green job opportunities are increasing faster globally than any other job category is, and in about five years, we likely won’t have enough climate workers to meet the industry’s demand, according to LinkedIn

That means we need more people, inclusive of all backgrounds and experiences, to put their skills to work on climate. But Climate People finds that a leading concern among those interested in joining the industry is that they’re unqualified for a climate career without prior climate experience. Its recent report debunks this myth, arguing that this relatively new industry is looking for people who are ready to apply their knowledge and experience to green work.

Still not convinced? We decided to take a quick poll of the Greentown team, and about three-quarters of those who responded said they pivoted their careers to climate when they came to Greentown. We were accountants, scientists, community builders, journalists, and so much more—and now, we’ve brought all we learned in those fields to tackle the greatest challenge of our lifetime. And you can, too.

Greentown startups are hiring for more than 100 jobs. If you’re ready to find your place in the climatetech industry, check out a list of companies with five or more open positions below, and view all job openings on our careers page!

Ebb Carbon de-acidifies the ocean and enhances its natural ability to capture CO2 from the air, storing it safely and stably as bicarbonate for at least 10,000 years.
Flux Marine’s electric outboard motors and complete boat packages are characterized by low maintenance, long range, and outstanding performance.
Heila Technologies, recently acquired by Kohler Power Group, creates a modular energy platform that makes it easy to connect and optimize solar arrays, batteries, and other distributed energy resources—building self-managing microgrids and fleets from the ground up.
Keystone Tower Systems is developing a new manufacturing process for wind turbine towers that enables taller, more structurally efficient towers.
Octopus Energy uses technology to bring lower and more transparent pricing, better service, and more sustainable energy to customers.
Phoenix Tailings is on a mission to be the world’s first clean mining and metals production company, eliminating this harmful waste from the environment while sustainably creating valuable materials.
Syzygy Plasmonics is developing a new type of photocatalytic chemical reactor to revolutionize the industrial gas, chemical, and energy industries, reducing both cost and emissions for major commodity chemicals.

Dear Friends of Greentown Labs,

With summer in full swing, we’re finding that people are eager to come together! It’s been a month full of exciting events at Greentown, which have convened folks from across the climatetech ecosystem to celebrate climatetech entrepreneurship, international collaboration, future climate leaders, and more.

We kicked off the month with a “Power Your Future” career day, co-hosted by our member Browning the Green Space, which brought more than 100 Boston-area high school students to Greentown HQ to learn about career paths in climatetech entrepreneurship! We were thrilled to have five of our members—AmpUpSublime SystemsQuantAQCyvl.ai, and MoveEV—demonstrate their technologies, and to have participation from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Enel X North America, Project Green Schools, Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology, Roxbury Community College’s Center for Smart Building Technology, Ameresco, and Xodus.

The following week, we turned our attention to offshore wind for an event in partnership with the Belgian Economic Trade Mission. We were honored to be joined by Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium and Governor Charlie Baker for the transatlantic partnership signing ceremonies and by industry experts who amplified advancements in the offshore wind energy industry, its environmental and economic benefits, lessons from abroad to apply to Massachusetts' developments, and more.

Just last week, we held a special edition of our Greentown Houston Transition On Tap with the Veterans Advanced Energy Project and celebrated Juneteenth with the American Association of Blacks in Energy’s Greater Boston Chapter.

In between all these exciting events, we had a couple of big announcements!
  • Dr. Barbara J. Burger—a transformational supporter of Greentown Labs who has played a pivotal role in advancing Houston’s energy innovation ecosystem throughout her career—has joined Greentown’s Board of Directors.
  • The Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator has launched a novel green loan program, the Cleantech Debt Fund, to accelerate equitable climate action and support early-stage cleantech and climatetech startups. We are thrilled to be a partner on this program, which will make our startup members eligible to apply for funding.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you want to get involved with or support our community. Thank you for your commitment to climate action!

Warmly,
The Greentown Labs Team

Greentown is also delighted to announce the appointment of Barbara J. Burger, Ph.D., former Vice President of Innovation and President of Chevron Technology Ventures, to our board of directors. Barbara has been a steadfast supporter of Greentown—and pivotal in our move to Houston—and we know her presence on the board will prove essential as we continue to grow this climate action community.

Lastly, while exciting things are always going on inside Greentown, we also have an exciting development outside of Greentown! If you happen by our east exterior wall, you will notice a new colorful mural entitled “Powering the Future Through Climatetech,” by the wonderful Hannah Bull.
