Pao Arts Center is a curatorial partner with the City of Boston on this program to create public art activations that reflect on whose stories are included or excluded in Boston’s narratives. We have developed a series of five public art and performance place-based projects that showcase and uplift Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voices as well as inspire and engage residents, visitors, and artists.
 
The Un-monument Initiative is presented by Pao Arts Center, curated by Lani Asunción, in collaboration with the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture brought to you by a grant from the Mellon Foundation.

Experience Chinatown After Dark

Under the glow of the lights of Chinatown, discover new artists who are lighting up the neighborhood with new murals. Meet up at Pao Arts Center and then you will be taken on an exclusive tour of Experience Chinatown murals. After the tour, enjoy award-winning Asian-inspired small plates and drinks at a cocktail reception at Shojo Boston. Funds raised will support free public art activities.

Youth Create Vibrant Mural 

Pao Arts Center and BCNC engaged 19 youth in a series of workshops on mural designing, creating media, and public speaking this summer. Then muralist Nell Valle and the youth created the Chinatown’s Glowing Lanterns mural featured at BCNC’s Boston site at 38 Ash Street. The mural displays a series of lanterns with imagery of the youth’s hopes for a healthy Chinatown, including access to education and green spaces.
 
This project was supported by the City of Boston, Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement.

Celebrating Pride with MBTA Campaign

In honor of Pride Month in June, Pao Arts Center presented an MBTA campaign that explored the theme of "chosen family" within the context of the Asian diaspora and the LGBTQ+ community. Featured artists included Mrinaalika Sivakumar, Emily Ramai Kim, and Cara Lew.

Welcome, Tisch Summer Fellow, Emily (she/her)

Emily is a third-year undergrad student studying Fine Arts and International, Literary, and Visual Studies at Tufts and the School of Museum of Fine Arts. She has experience working in visual arts mediums such as painting, photography, and drawing. She hopes to branch out into performance and installation as a means of articulating identity and gender expression. In her free time, Emily likes to dance, go on sunset bike rides, and stalk the ICA website. Emily will join us through August and will help us with gallery exhibits, performances, and much more.

Stardust in a Dandelion Creates Space for Communal Vulnerability

On Friday, April 19, 65 guests attended Stardust in a Dandelion, a multimedia performance at Pao Arts Center co-curated by musician Maddie Lam and Performance Program Manager Ashley Yung. The evening was anchored by a musical performance by Maddie Lam, and was complimented by poetry by Anny Thach and visual artwork by Ashley Jin. Together, the three artists whose work all evoke softness through storytelling, created an immersive performance experience for the audience.
