BOSTON - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today issued the following safety tips for residents in light of heavy rain expected tonight/tomorrow, and the potential of a Tropical Storm impacting the City of Boston next week.
Residents can sign up for Alert Boston, the city's emergency notification system, to receive emergency alerts by phone, email or text. Sign up here. Residents are also encouraged to call 311 with any non-emergency questions about available city services.
- Make sure storm drains are cleaned out to prevent poor draining flooding;
- Avoid walking or driving through flood waters - just six inches of moving water can knock you down and two feet of water can sweep away your vehicle;
- Familiarize yourself with the terms used to identify a flooding hazard:
- Flood Watch means "be aware," and that conditions are right for flooding to occur in your area
- Floor Warning means "take action," and that flooding is either happening or will happen shortly
- With heavy rain the potential exists for downed tree limbs, which could result in power outages. Take action before and during a flood:
- Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan;
- Listen to local officials and monitor your local radio or television for information;
