City prepared for another winter weather event

No snow emergency/parking ban declared

The National Weather Service has declared that a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the City of Boston from 10:00 a.m. today through 5:00 a.m. Sunday. The latest forecasts indicate that the storm is expected to result in approximately six to eight inches of snow in Boston. By 6:00 p.m., Boston is expected to have approximately one inch of snow on the ground, with the heaviest snowfall to take place between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, falling at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Wind gusts may reach up to 40 miles per hour during the time of heaviest snowfall. Temperatures are likely to stay in the 20 to 25 degree range.

The Mayor convened his team this morning to discuss the latest storm-related information and response plans for the weekend. This team will continue to monitor the forecast and provide updates throughout the weather event.

At this time, there is no snow emergency in place; however, residents are advised to continue to monitor mainstream and social media for any potential changes.

The City is undertaking the following preparations for the storm:

Public Works

• Public Works teams will begin pre-treating roads at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon.
• Crews are prepared for the snow event, and will have more than 600 pieces of equipment active by 5:30 p.m. 

Transportation

• Drivers should exercise extra caution and pay close attention to pedestrian traffic. Heavy snowfall and high wind gusts may impact visibility.
  
• The City has not declared a snow emergency or parking ban. 
• The Department of Transportation will have additional staff on hand to respond to any signal issues.

Public Safety

• Boston Police, Boston Fire, and Boston EMS will have additional staff on hand throughout the storm.
• Boston Police will also work with the Boston Public Health Commission and other City and State departments to ensure that homeless individuals and families have shelter during the storm.
  

Cold Weather Safety Reminders

• Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that results from combustion and can quickly become fatal. Residents should clear snow and debris away from mufflers before starting the car and ensure that external vents are cleared of snow. If you are using a generator, make sure it is far enough away to vent air and gases away from the home. A safety video about carbon monoxide poisoning prevention is available here.
• To protect against forecasted cold temperatures, people should layer clothing and minimize outdoor activity.   
• Property owners are required to salt and sand sidewalks, stairs and pedestrian ramps to prevent slippery surfaces.
• Residents are encouraged to shovel out hydrants and catch basins near or abutting their property to assist our public safety agencies and protect against flooding.
• Please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need help.
• Use caution when walking near buildings that may have falling snow or ice.
• Shoveling snow can pose a serious health safety risk to persons with heart disease and senior citizens. Residents should consider seeking the assistance of a family member, a helpful neighbor or hire someone to help.
