               (Boston Orange

THE HUNTINGTON LAUNCHES THE HUNTINGTON ACADEMY, WITH PROFESSIONAL-LED COURSES FOR ALL AGES

For the first time in over a decade, The Huntington Education Department offers courses for students K-12, workshops for adults, and corporate trainings

(BOSTON) – The Huntington’s Education Department announces the launch of The Huntington Academy, new tuition-based classes for students of all ages to learn, play, and engage with the theatrical arts. Online registration is now live for five courses starting in September for students Pre-K through 12th grade. More courses, including adult workshops and corporate trainings, will be added throughout the 2024-2025 season.

The Huntington’s steadfast commitment to arts education is a core pillar of its mission and operations. Theatre education builds prosocial behavior, encourages empathy, improves public speaking, and develops both creative and critical thinking.

The Huntington Academy’s launch this September marks the first time since 2008 that tuition-based education programming will be made available by the Tony Award-winning theatre company. The Academy features all new course offerings, plus a handful of familiar favorites under the umbrella program EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation. Academy courses provide an opportunity for students of all ages to explore playwriting and performance. Led by industry professionals, Academy courses will also empower students with essential life skills through theater games, scene work, and performance. These offerings will serve as a new programming pillar, accompanying The Huntington’s longstanding, subsidized education programming, including School Residencies, the Student Matinee Series, Poetry Out Loud Massachusetts, and the Boston chapters of the national Next Narrative Monologue Competition and August Wilson New Voices Competition.

Courses for K-12 students are structured to stand alone and also provide a scaffolded, cumulative learning experience for individuals who wish to experience the entire course catalogue as they progress year-over-year.

“The Huntington Academy has been in the planning stages for more than five years and we are thrilled to celebrate its launch,” say Huntington Director of Education Meg O’Brien and Associate Director of Education & Practical Learning Marisa Jones. “With our course offerings we aim to celebrate the theatrical process, which in turn will amplify and elevate the creative spark and rich imagination that exists in everyone, regardless of their age or career.”

Current Huntington Academy course offerings include:

Stories to Share | PreK & K

This course is an introduction to storytelling, creative expression, and play. Throughout the semester, students will be encouraged to tap into their curiosity and wonder as they explore oral narration and folk tales. While focusing on self-expression, students will gather new skills to support them as they form their own ideas about how they want to create and share stories with their peers. This course is a fun and playful experience for first-time performers, curated and taught by theatre arts professionals.

Journey into Acting | 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Grade

Designed and taught by theatre arts professionals, this course provides opportunities for students to build their confidence, collaborate with their peers, and explore how they can use their bodies and voices to tell a story. Through theatre games and exercises, students will develop listening skills, sensory awareness, and focus. Using strategies such as Reader’s Theatre and improvisation, students will gain foundational knowledge in the performing arts, having lots of fun along the way!

Crafting Characters | 4th & 5th Grade

In this course, students will dive deeper into character development and build their skills in physicality and voice work. Students will practice listening and responding in character, learning new acting techniques along the way. Using improvisation games and theatre exercises, students will continue to build a relationship with acting and discover a wide range of performance styles. Led by theatre arts professionals, this is a great course for young actors seeking to hone their performance skills and begin thinking about theatre as a multi-disciplinary art form.

EPIC: Middle School | 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade

Under the umbrella program EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation, this is a course for young actors who are excited to develop their theatrical physicality, ensemble work, and creative writing. Students will work together to create an original piece of theatre utilizing devised theatre techniques taught by theatre industry professionals. Using external stimulus as inspiration, they will devise their own characters, text, and blocking as an ensemble. Theatre exercises will be used to encourage risk-taking, creative expression, and age-appropriate acting techniques. Students in this course will participate in the EPIC: Festival at the end of the semester, where they will perform their work and be in community with other EPIC: Festival participants.

College Audition Prep | 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th Grade

This course is designed to coach students preparing for college auditions and students who wish to hone their craft in a fun, focused, and supportive learning environment. With guidance from theatre industry professionals, students will develop their voice and style on stage as they develop their skills in monologue and scene work. Plus, they will strengthen their knowledge about the audition process, including learning how to write a resume, how to make a successful self-tape audition, and more!

Adult workshops for theatre and non-theatre professionals will be added in Fall 2024. General courses will center on introducing and developing artistic skills for adults of all experience levels in an accessible and fun atmosphere. Artist courses will provide skill-sharpening workshops for those who are currently in or will be pursuing an artistic career. These workshops will create a more empathetic and creative community in Greater Boston, both in the board room and on stage.

For corporate organizations who want to give their workforce the star treatment, The Huntington Academy corporate training will be made available later this season. Workshops led by industry and HR professionals can be curated to a company’s needs and will ensure “the show will go on” thanks to a strengthened foundation of teambuilding, trust, and strategic creative instinct.

MAYOR MICHELLE WU AND THE CITY OF BOSTON TO HONOR NEW EDITION SEPT. 6 & 7

MAYOR MICHELLE WU AND THE CITY OF BOSTON TO HONOR NEW EDITION SEPT. 6 & 7

The six members of the iconic Boston R&B group will attend several community-based events, including a guest performance on City Hall Plaza

BOSTON - Tuesday, August 20, 2024 - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu announced a series of events celebrating Boston R&B group New Edition. The City of Boston will honor the legendary group—founded in Roxbury in 1978—and their profound impact on both the community and music industry on Sept. 6 and 7.

On Friday, Sept. 6, the City will host a mural unveiling and street renaming in Roxbury. On Saturday, Sept. 7, the members of New Edition will participate in community events for seniors and youth, and the weekend will culminate with HOMEMADE, a free concert on City Hall Plaza featuring over 20 local artists and a guest performance from New Edition.

“Music brings communities together,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “I am thrilled to honor New Edition and celebrate local talent with HOMEMADE. I look forward to recognizing these legendary Boston artists for their contributions to our community’s arts and culture.”

“Being from the city of champions is an honor and we are truly appreciative of the foundation that was laid for us in Boston,” said Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition. “We cannot express what it means to travel the world, doing what we love to do at the highest of levels and accomplishing so many great things while never forgetting where we came from. Continuing to make sure that we are positive role models for Boston’s new generations is what life is all about. Lastly, and most importantly, being able to give back to our community by helping others is how we turn our gifts and talents into purpose!”

On Friday, Sept. 6, Mayor Wu will unveil a New Edition mural designed and painted by Roxbury-based artist Lee “Square” Beard, located at the corner of Ambrose and Albany Streets in Roxbury.

Beard has been a multidisciplinary artist for 17 years. Beard, also known as SOEMS, attended the Boston Arts Academy and began his career in the graffiti scene in the early 2000s. Since then, he has been continually active in the city’s mural landscape. While Beard’s wide range of work includes graphic illustration, murals, brand strategy, and stage and prop designs, he is primarily known for his precise, swift lettering. Beard believes art is a collaborative experience and is proud of being a member of the “GN Crew,” which creates public art installations.

“It is truly an honor to be the artist to point out some of the many impactful moments, emotions, and classic vibes that New Edition accomplished,” said Lee “Square” Beard. “They have done the work to the point of sheer brilliance, and I am truly humbled to be as accurate as I can in showcasing this. With the ups and downs that come with being in the entertainment industry, it’s beautiful that all members can come together."

During the mural unveiling, Mayor Wu will unofficially designate Ambrose Street as New Edition Way and declare Sept. 9 New Edition Day.

On Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10:00 a.m., New Edition and the City will host a breakfast for seniors and participate in a community backpack giveaway at the Orchard Garden Boys & Girls Club of Boston. The Boys & Girls Club, located at 2 Dearborn St., is on the site of one of New Edition’s first practice spaces.

“It is such an honor to be able to celebrate one of the most iconic groups to ever come out of the city of Boston,” said John Borders IV, Director of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment for the City of Boston. “We are truly excited to bring the community together to recognize the impact New Edition has had both locally and worldwide. We hope this sets the precedent for how we honor our own moving forward.”

On Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3:00 p.m., the City of Boston will host HOMEMADE, a concert on City Hall Plaza featuring performances from a variety of local artists, all included on the City of Boston’s Dear Summer Mixtape. Attendees can expect everything from Dorchester-based hip-hop artist Kei to pop, R&B, and soul from Brighton’s Julia Chisholm, as well as a guest performance by New Edition. MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES GRANTS AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY-BASED SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS

Grant program totaling $300,0000 will support community-based sports organizations that offer out-of-school sports programs across Boston neighborhoods.

BOSTON - Tuesday, August 20, 2024 - Mayor Michelle Wu and the Human Services Cabinet today announced applications are now open for the Community Sports Grant, a grant program totaling $300,000 to support volunteer-led youth sports organizations that provide high-quality, engaging athletics programming for Boston youth ages 8-18. The goal of this grant is to increase the variety of youth sports programming in the City and provide a positive outlet for youth when they’re not in school. Applications will be open until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024. This initiative is aligned with the Mayor’s Connect, Learn, Explore program, her commitment to Boston’s youth by ensuring every child is empowered to explore and find their passions.

“Part of our responsibility for keeping Boston’s young people healthy and happy is ensuring each of them has access to enriching experiences outside of the classroom,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “It is a joy to partner with youth sports programs across the City to keep our kids in motion.”

Neighborhood sports leagues are often the place where the city’s youngest athletes are first exposed to sports. As the foundation of youth sports programming in the City of Boston, volunteer-led sports organizations involve a diverse range of young people in their community, providing them with the opportunity to stay active, bond with friends, and develop character.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with neighborhood-based sports organizations,” said Chief of Human Services José F. Massó. “As a youth basketball coach, I know these programs are a labor of love for the many volunteers that keep them going and I’m glad that we’re able to offer this infusion of resources to make their work easier.”

The Human Services Cabinet will distribute grants of up to $10,000 to support increasing access to sports opportunities for Boston youth. Applicants must intend to use funds to (1) reduce the registration fee, (2) purchase new equipment or uniforms, and/or (3) cover rental space costs. The grant funding will support fall, winter, and spring sports and must be used by June 30, 2025.

“Access to quality youth sports experiences that eliminate barriers to participation is critical for the health and wellness of our young people,” said David Shapiro, CEO of YMCA of Greater Boston. “It offers them the opportunity for meaningful relationships, development, discovery, teamwork, and joy.”

Creating easier access to athletic opportunities is a part of Connect, Learn, Explore, Mayor Wu’s initiative to ensure Boston’s youth are empowered to find and pursue their passions. In May, the Mayor announced the launch of the Boston Youth Sports Hub, a one-stop website that offers a directory of Boston’s neighborhood sports leagues for families, links to city-run programs, and stories of athletic achievements by Boston youth sports teams. In addition to providing grant support to youth sports providers, the Youth Sports Initiative aims to increase participation of youth who have been historically underrepresented in youth sports, improve the quality of coaching in the city, and enhance the variety and quality of sports offered by city departments.
