第127屆波士頓馬拉松賽打破紀錄共籌款4020萬 10K賽6/25截止報名

               (Boston Orange 編譯) 波士頓體育會(B.A.A.)今 (24) 日宣佈,第127屆波士頓馬拉松賽為200多個非營利組織共籌集4,020萬美元,金額之多,打破了2019年創下的3870萬美元最高記錄。

波士頓馬拉松慈善計劃是BAA1989年開始設立的。在B.A.A和約翰漢考克 (John Hancock) 非營利計劃合作下,迄今總共籌集5億零20萬美元

BAA發展總監Nicole Juri指出,B.A.A.官方慈善計劃、約翰漢考克非營利計劃之外,今年這第127屆波士頓馬拉松賽共有2,537人以籌款運動員身份參加,籌款總額創新高,是所有參與跑步與義務服務者為社會做貢獻的成果,有200多家非牟利機構將因此獲益。

John Hancock和萬通全球社區投資副總裁兼法律顧問Tom Crohan表示,該機構感到非常自豪,能夠以締造出籌款里程碑的結果,為該機構作為波士頓馬拉松賽主要贊助者38年,畫下一個圓滿句點。他們感謝協力創造出這紀錄的所有人,為能夠和社區夥伴一起幫助更多人生活得更好而驕傲。

波士頓體育會和John Hancock每年在波士頓馬拉松賽開賽前後,為支持各種不同理念的跑者,舉辦各種籌款活動,其中315日那天舉辦的波士頓馬拉松捐贈日,在一天24小時之內,共籌集了1041766元。

波士頓體育會每年都會為參加波士頓體育會官方慈善計畫,以及約翰漢考克非牟利計畫的非營利團體,提供參加波士頓馬拉松賽的參賽邀請。每家非牟利機構直接管理自己的申請流程,運動員挑選,以及訂定籌款最低額,截止日期及要求等。

作為波士頓體育會官方慈善項目今夏活動的一部分,波士頓體育會將發通知給已獲挑選參加第128屆波士頓馬拉松賽的非牟利機構。更多相關詳情,公佈在波士頓體育會官方慈善計畫網站上。

華美福利會執行長陳美霞榮獲Tufts大學榮譽公共服務博士學位

               (Boston Orange) 塔芙茨大學 (Tufts) 521日在該校地167屆畢業典禮中,頒發榮譽公共服務博士學位,表揚華美福利會執行長陳美霞 (Mary Chin) 

 塔芙茨大學今年 (2023) 請來聯合國副秘書長Amina J. Mohammed為畢業典禮演講人,在橫跨Medford/Somerville 2市的校本部,勉勵3730名畢業生要認識到這世代人所面對的挑戰,同時對未來抱有希望。他鼓勵畢業生們要勇於挺身而出,敢於大聲發言。

在畢業典禮中,塔大還頒發榮譽學位表揚6名社區人士。波士頓華埠的華美福利會執行長陳美霞,忝列其一。

塔大稱陳美霞為波士頓華埠的社區領袖,也是中國移民家庭的一個勤奮女兒,從麻州大學畢業後,再完成了西蒙斯學院的社會工作研究所課業,並取得臨床社會工作者牌照,陸續成為麻州4家醫院的社會服務部門及精神學項目主管。

                    在以移民為服務重心,專注於就業培訓及學生服務的華美福利會中做為執行主管,陳美霞長期致力貫徹華美福利會的「教育、賦權及就業」使命,並持續為不斷擴大,掙扎中的移民,以及其他需要第二次機會的壬提供服務。

            (Boston Orange 周菊子麻州綜合報導) 美國公視波士頓分站GBH 522日晚在機構大樓內舉辦亞美傳統月慶祝會,以「看不見的變成可看見的 (The invisible becoming visible) 」為主題,邀請6名族裔背景不同的成功人士分享經驗,提出建議,並頒發「華埠牌樓獎」,表揚社區領袖陳秀英 (Helen Chin Schlichte)

             1949年就踏進州政府工作,2003年以麻行政及財務廳廳長助理之職退休,經歷過12位州長,13名廳長的陳秀英,這晚獲頒「華埠牌樓獎 (Chinatown Gate Award) 」。她不但是中華頤養院的創辦人之一,退休後和李保華等人合作創辦了「亞裔基金 (Asian American Fund)」,還曾經擔任麻州灣和麥瑞麥威克谷聯合會副主席,南女童軍會副主席等等要職。

             這晚應邀分享經驗的人,分別是在政界,企業界,非牟利組織領域佔有一席之地的成功人士,包括越南裔的Essex18選區麻州眾議員Tram T. Nguyen,華裔的South Hadley鎮經理黃素芬 (Lisa Wong),勒星頓學校委員會前任委員Eileen Jay,以及既是Pramand創辦夥伴兼執行長,也是Instylla主席兼執行長,Rejoni執行長的印度裔Amar Sawhney博士,曾任BJ批發公司執行長,現為麻州互惠 (MassMutual)董事,父母分別為華裔及愛爾蘭裔的Laura Sen,以及20217月出任全球藝術生活執行長的舞蹈家Connie C. Chin

             Tram T. Nguyen指出,希望更多亞裔能夠勇於參政,走上公眾舞台,讓更多人看見,才能和更多人互動,進而帶動正面的交流與影響。曾經擔任費奇堡市市長,歷任數個市鎮鎮經理的黃素芬說,閱讀、創作詩歌、小說與音樂,也都能夠啟發人。Eileen Jay則指出,亞裔雖然有不同的語言、文化背景,但彼此之間其實也有不少共通處,包括無可迴避,一看就是和人不一樣的長相外表,所以亞裔應有很大的合作空間。

             Amar Sawhney十分謙虛,笑言自己初來乍到美國時,基本上順其自然,而且由於外型就是和人不一樣,他的經歷其實是想躲也躲不掉的引人矚目。然而因緣際會的,他不但完成學業,取得博士學位,拿到上百個專利,還成為系列創業家。他認為,亞裔要成為社區中的領袖,其實並沒有模式可套,但關懷他人的生活,盡己所能地為人服務,就是邁向未來的最好途徑。

             Laura Sen早年在上司鼓勵她和另一位同事爭取執行長職位時,出於亞裔本性,她認為只要自己夠好,同事們一定會支持,沒想到這就給了競爭對手在接掌大權6個月後開除了她的機會。她說她母親愛爾蘭裔家族的喜歡聚會,高談闊論,讓她習慣了和男生打交道,以及從母親那兒學會的「要得到,得讓人知道」的這種對經商很有利的生活態度。讓她建議亞裔要勇於爭取自己希望得到的東西。。

             Connie Chin直言自己經歷過從默默耕耘,變成必須站出來代表自己的企業說話,和人交流,帶領團隊,甚至輔導人以做回饋的轉變。她坦言自己身為第三代移民,得到在先輩福蔭中長大的優渥環境,得以追求自己的理想。所以她對亞裔後輩的建議也是遵循自己的心,有夢就要追。

周菊子昆士市報導) 紐英碖客家鄉親會520日中午,在昆士市龍鳳酒樓舉行年會。理事、嘉賓共約40人見證現任會長謝如鍵交棒給劉秀春,邱西薔、畢儒宗接任副會長,並歡迎吳明真、林采彤2名新人加入理事陣容,感謝楊英嬰當場捐款200元。

                 在理事陳裕逢妙語生花的主持,波士頓僑教中心主任潘昭榮,波士頓僑務委員郭競儒,曾任僑務委員的蔣宗壬,陳家驊,以及美洲臺灣客家聯合總會總會長宋玉琴夫婦,舞蹈老師余嘯渝夫婦等嘉賓的見證中,謝如鍵手捧一本紐英倫客家鄉親會於2020年出版的10週年特刊,交給劉秀春,藉以象徵會務傳承。

                 曾任波士頓僑務委員的梅錫銳當天也應邀出席,但因事先行離席。

                    謝如鍵隨後先感謝所有理事及嘉賓們一直以來的支持,再報告該會過去一年概況,包括主辦、協辦,也參與了許多社區組織的活動,有台灣夜市,台灣美食晚宴,雙十國慶的遊行、晚宴,支持紐英崙中華專業人員協會45

週年慶,各僑團的兔年慶祝會,以及僑教中心的迎春揮毫,牛頓市台灣日,以及客家會舉辦的客家建築特色、微形疏菜和種子培育等網路講座。客家會自己每年一度的天穿日,更是在理事們同心協力,各自親手做出客家特色菜,帶到會場中的辦得有聲有色。

                     謝如鍵指出,過去一年來,客家會秉持客家人的勤儉持家傳統,許多材料、人力都自掏腰包,因此儘管為了辦活動,買材料,參加美洲臺灣客家聯合總會繳會費,捐款500元給Shrewsbury公校的徐世寬紀念基金,刊登慶祝雙十國慶廣告,購票參加台灣美食宴等,不免還是要花錢,但有游勝雄捐款一千元,還有駐波士頓經文處處長孫儉元捐款贊助,客家之友蔡坤喜醫師在天穿日時捐款150元,新會員繳入會費等收入,截至518日,該會的銀行帳戶結餘還有2萬餘元。

100元的紅包,謝如鍵、陳裕逢和宋玉琴捐出的酒等做獎品,又是紅包,又是名酒的在現場抽獎,幾乎人人有獎的不斷引發歡樂笑聲。散席前,還有人發現當天是理事曾政泉的生日,馬上有曾家大姊曾秀梅出面張羅,拿來龍鳳酒樓的兩枚蛋塔權充蛋糕,眾人合唱生日歌,聊表心意,才依依不捨的散席。

波士頓體育會悼念波士頓馬拉松賽偶像 Rick Hoyt 辭世

            (Boston Orange 編譯) 波士頓體育會 (BAA) 發出聲明,哀悼曾36次全程跑完波士頓馬拉松的馬拉松界偶像級人物Rick Hoyt辭世。

聲明文如下:

Rick Hoyt將成為「是的,你能夠 (Yes, You Can)」這定義Hoyt團隊精神的波士頓馬拉松偶像人物,永遠被人誌記。我們非常幸運,能夠曾經稱Rick為朋友、導師、先驅者,以及波士頓馬拉松完賽者。他的傳奇將經由每年4月,在波士頓馬拉松賽期間,藉由把Rick & Dick Hoyt獎頒發給某個人展現這種支持、包容精神的人,傳承下去。

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association extends heartfelt condolences to the Hoyt family on the passing of Rick Hoyt, 36-time Boston marathon finisher and iconic member of Team Hoyt. 

The B.A.A. wishes to share the following statement in memory of Rick: 

Rick Hoyt will always be remembered as a Boston Marathon icon and for personifying the “Yes You Can” mentality that defined Team Hoyt. We are fortunate to have been able to call Rick a friend, mentor, pioneer, and Boston Marathon finisher. His legacy will live on through the Rick & Dick Hoyt Award, which is presented each April around the Boston Marathon to someone who exhibits the spirit of Team Hoyt through advocacy and inclusion.  

Our thoughts go out to the Hoyt family, Rick's many friends, and all who were touched by his positivity. 

Healey 州長指派麻州參議員Gobi出任經濟發展廳鄉村事務主任

                       (Boston Orange 編譯) 麻州政府今 (22) 日公佈,指派麻州參議員Ann Gobi 出任麻州經濟發展廳麾下的新設職位,鄉村事務主任 (Rural Affairs Director) ,預定65日就職。依法,麻州必須為她所代表的屋斯特 (Worcester)及罕普夏 (Hampshire)選區,辦理參議員補選。

                    麻州州長奚莉 (Maura Healey) 今年3月宣佈過要設立這一職位,並規劃其職責包括作為經濟發展廳副廳長Ashley Stolba所主導的經濟基金團隊成員,以及審閱全州的補助機會,包括社區一站式成長 (Community One Stop for Growth),期以掃除並緩解小城鎮在爭取補助上所面對障礙,還將撥出特定時間給鄉村小城,給予技術支援,搜尋補助機會。

                    麻州經濟發展廳廳長郝伊平 (Yvonne Hao)表示,麻州的鄉村小城在麻州經濟中有著很重要的角色,她很興奮有個真正支持鄉村社區的人加入麻州團隊。Anne M. Gobi有著麻州政府和鄉村城鎮聯繫所需要的知識、經驗與熱情。

                   Anne M. Gobi早於2001年時當選麻州眾議員,踏進政壇,2015年再當選為麻州參議員,連任迄今,並擔任環境、天然資源及農業共同委員會主席,高等教育委員會副主席,21世紀務農委員會副主席。

                      她在州政府網站上的個人資料非常簡單,只有職業是議員兼律師。在教育及公共服務上,她畢業於Worcester州立學院,獲有麻州法學院JD學位,當過Spencer民主黨部鎮委員。

                  麻州州長辦公室發出的指派聲明形容她在前述州議會職務外,還與人合作設立了運動員核心小組,把支持釣魚、打獵及其他戶外活動的人聚集了起來。她也曾經是退伍軍人及聯邦事務委員會成員。在當選為州議員之前,她在Leicester高中教過書,有自己的法律事務辦公室,在麻州中部法律事務員住處為家暴受害者服務。

                    麻州州長辦公室指出,奚莉州長今年31日遞出第87章法案,申請設立新的麻州住宅及宜居社區辦公室 (Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities) ,並由一名內閣級首長領導,同時把原本的住宅及經濟發展廳改名為經濟發展辦公室,由經濟發展廳長郝依平率領,並刻正著手重整組織架構。

Gobi to Serve as Advocate for Rural Communities & Support their Economic Development and Growth 

 

BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll announced Massachusetts Senator Anne Gobi will join their administration as the new Director of Rural Affairs in the Executive Office of Economic Development.  

 

In this new role created by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, Gobi will serve as a dedicated advocate and ombudsman cultivating economic development within rural communities. She will ensure that the needs of rural and regional economies are incorporated into the economic development plan being developed by the Executive Office of Economic Development and will be responsible for coordinating with secretariats and state agencies to ensure that state government is attuned to the unique needs of these towns.  

 

“We are building an economy that benefits all communities, businesses, and people in Massachusetts, particular those that are too often overlooked and underrepresented like rural and small towns,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Senator Gobi’s fierce advocacy of rural equity, agricultural and small businesses, and conservation initiatives makes her the ideal candidate to help our rural towns across the state succeed.”  

 

“Senator Gobi brings to this new role deep knowledge of the challenges that rural and small-town economies face and decades of experience serving the people of our state,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “We are excited to welcome her to our administration and look forward to working with her to better reach rural communities and help them grow.” 

 

Gobi was first elected to the Legislature in 2001 as State Representative and became State Senator in 2014 representing 22 communities in Worcester and Hampshire counties, several of which are rural. She currently serves as the Senate Chair of the Agriculture Committee, Vice Chair of the Higher Education Committee, and Co-Chair of the Commission on 21st Century Farming within the Legislature. She also co-chairs the Rural Caucus, Food Systems Caucus, Regional Transit Authority Caucus, Municipal Light Caucus and Regional Schools Caucus, and serves on the East-West Rail Commission.  
 

“Massachusetts’ rural and small towns have such an important role to play in our state’s economy and I’m excited to have a true champion of these communities join Team Massachusetts,” said Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao. “Senator Gobi has the knowledge, experience, and passion required to connect with the needs of rural towns and plug these municipalities into our state’s many economic development resources.”  

 

An avid outdoorsman, Gobi co-founded the Sportsmen’s Caucus, which convenes supporters of fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities. She also serves as a member of the Veterans and Federal Affairs Committee. Prior to being elected to the Legislature, she taught at Leicester High School, had her own law office, and worked with victims of domestic violence at Central Mass Legal Assistance. A lifelong Spencer resident, Gobi graduated from Worcester State University and the Massachusetts School of Law. 

 

“Our office supports all of Massachusetts’ 351 cities and towns, more than half of which are rural communities,” said Undersecretary Ashley Stolba. “We’re excited that Senator Gobi will join our office to provide these municipalities with dedicated attention to help their economies succeed.” 

 

"I am thrilled to take on this important role and grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration for elevating our rural communities,” said Senator Gobi. “While I will miss the Legislature, I look forward to continuing to work for the needs of small towns throughout the Commonwealth as their advocate in state government."  

Gobi will start in her new role June 5 as a member of the Executive Office of Economic Development’s economic foundations team led by Undersecretary Ashley Stolba. She will be tasked with conducting a review of all state grant opportunities, including the Community One Stop for Growth, to ensure that barriers for rural and small towns are mitigated and will host dedicated office hours for rural towns to receive technical assistance to identify and explore grant opportunities.  She will also serve as a member of the Rural Policy Commission, which advocates for the vitality of rural communities as well as legislative and policy solutions that address rural needs. 
 
On March 1, Governor Healey filed Article 87 legislation to create a new Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities headed by a cabinet-level secretary and to rename the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development as the Executive Office of Economic Development. Economic Development Secretary Hao recently announced a restructuring to better position her office to fulfill its mission of promoting business growth, opportunity, and economic vitality for Massachusetts’ communities and residents. This realignment includes an intentional focus on supporting the needs of rural and small towns through the office’s economic foundations team. The Article 87 reorganization plan will take effect June 1.  


波士頓市長吳弭宣佈推出改善街道安全計畫


 

(Boston Orange編譯) 波士頓市長吳弭 (Michelle Wu) 和街道長Jascha Franklin-Hodge520日宣佈推出一個新的街道安全計畫 「安全浪 (Safety Surge)」,要控制超速,減少事故,讓地方鄰里覺得散步、騎自行車或開車都更舒適。

這「安全浪」計畫將在符合資格的鄰里街道上,安全限速坡道,重新設計十字路口,並制定新的市府交通號誌指導原則,以降低住宅區的交通速度,減少駕駛和行人、騎自行車者之間的衝突。

根據一份3月份公佈的報告,在20212022年間,全州內行人被撞致死的比率增加了35%。但根據波士頓緊急醫療服務 (EMS) 及波士頓警察局的數據,波士頓市內的嚴重撞擊事件卻減少了。在去年的大約3000宗撞擊事件中,有8人死亡。波士頓EMS和麻省理工學院最近做的一份分析顯示,在波士頓,平均每4天,就有一名正在走路或騎自行車的兒童被車撞。

吳弭市長的2024會計年度預算提案,就包括新撥的1200萬元經費做安全方面投資。吳弭市長這天還特地挑選2022年安裝了速限坡道的Thetford Evans遊樂場來宣佈將推出的鄰里速限坡道,交通號誌指南等計畫。

鄰里速限坡道部分,波士頓市府已選定計畫實施首3年,有哪些地點適合設立速限坡道,並在市府網站上公佈了這些地點,供市民查看。市府將在確定哪些地點會施工支持這計畫時,更新地圖。市府計畫利用街道安全工具,每年設計2530個十字路口。

交通燈號誌指南部分,2018年時的更新,藉由給人更長的過馬路時間,以及在轉彎有高度危險地點做些改變來強調行人安全,例如規定城中區及鄰里商業區紅燈時不准轉彎,另設自行車道等等。

            波士頓市目前正在為改善藍山大道沿路的各種交通模式走公共流程,計畫重點在改善行人安全,包括改善十字路口,縮短跨越接到距離,改善號誌時間等。

                  波士頓市府也將改善西洛士百利內從公園路到Lagrange街的中央街的沿路安源,以解決這條街上歷史性的持續出現嚴重撞擊,人命攸關事件情況。

            


MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES STREET UPGRADES TO ENHANCE MOBILITY AND SAFETY FOR EVERYONE


New “Safety Surge” initiative will bring traffic calming infrastructure to every neighborhood in Boston

BOSTON - Monday, May 22, 2023 - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu and Chief of Streets Jascha Franklin-Hodge announced the City’s Safety Surge, a new street safety program designed to curb speeding, reduce crashes, and make neighborhoods more comfortable and safer for walking, biking, and driving. The Safety Surge invests in the installation of zones of speed humps on eligible neighborhood streets, the redesign of intersections for safety, and new guidelines for the City’s traffic signals to slow down traffic on residential streets and reduce conflicts between drivers, pedestrians, and bike riders. Today’s announcement builds on Mayor Wu’s commitment to ensure all modes of transportation are safe on Boston’s streets and to make Boston the best City in the country to raise a family. The plan for speed hump implementation was first announced last fall with an expansion of the City’s bike network. 


“As our City grows, we must act with urgency to make our streets safe for everyone,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “All across the City, residents are worried about speeding cars that make it unsafe for kids to play in front yards or seniors to cross the street. By redesigning intersections and roadways, and improving traffic signals, we will help people get around while making sure our community members are safe.”


“We hear from residents every day about concerns with traffic safety and speeding in their neighborhoods,” said Jascha Franklin-Hodge, Chief of Streets. “Parents walking their kids to the playground or older adults stopping by the corner store shouldn’t have to worry about speeding drivers or fear for their safety when crossing the street. We believe that this comprehensive approach puts us on the path to bring that sense of safety to streets across Boston.” 


“I have long advocated that pedestrian safety is one of the top issues we face, and that speeding cars are a public health emergency in the City of Boston. It will require traffic calming infrastructure to force cars to slow down in our neighborhoods and protect all neighbors- including our seniors, persons with disabilities, and young children,” said Council President Ed Flynn. “With the inclusion of speed hump zones, safer intersections, and traffic signals focused on pedestrian safety, the Safety Surge will help make our streets safer for all. Thank you to Mayor Wu for her leadership, and I will continue to work with the City, my neighbors, and colleagues to advocate for infrastructure to force speeding cars to slow down.”


Fatal pedestrian crashes statewide increased by 35 percent between 2021 and 2022, according to a report released in March. While serious crashes in Boston are down, nearly 3,300 crashes occurred in Boston last year resulting in eight fatalities, according to data from Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Boston Police Department (BPD). A recent analysis conducted by Boston EMS and MIT researchers showed that a child is struck by a car while walking or biking on average once every four days in Boston.


“Unsafe road design is creating fatal consequences for communities across the Commonwealth. The sharp rise in fatal crashes is extremely troubling, but we're grateful that Mayor Wu and the Streets Cabinet are responding today with urgency,” said Brendan Kearney, Deputy Director of Advocacy for WalkMassachusetts. “In the City of Boston, speed humps were first introduced as a tool in the Neighborhood Slow Streets pilot program. Speed humps have been so popular, they will now be a proactive part of design. Boston is leading on making streets safer for everyone, and we hope that other communities and state agencies will follow this example.”


The Mayor’s Fiscal Year 24 budget proposal includes more than $12 million to fund new safety investments as part of the Safety Surge. Mayor Wu made today’s announcement at the Thetford Evans Playground, located in an area that had speed humps installed in 2022. 


The three key components of the Safety Surge are as follows:


NEIGHBORHOOD SPEED HUMPS PROGRAM



A simple street tool like a speed hump can reduce car speeds and create calmer neighborhood streets and a more comfortable environment for those who walk or bike. As part of the Safety Surge, the City will plan, design, and build ten speed hump zones each year. The zones for the first three years of the program have been identified and can be found at this link.


Of the nearly 800 miles of City streets, 394 miles are potentially eligible for this program. Zones are made up of small, connected areas of streets and are prioritized based on demographic information and crash history. Speed humps are safe for vehicles and encourage driving at speeds of no more than 20-25 miles per hour. Major arterials and roads carrying MBTA bus routes are not appropriate for speed humps and will not be included in this program. 


Residents will be able to use a map to see which streets are eligible for this program and the zones that will be constructed during the first three year phase. The map will be updated as each construction phase is determined. To support this program, the City has issued a Speed Humps Policy and Design Directive that formalizes guidelines for where and how speed humps should be installed in Boston.


SAFER INTERSECTIONS


As part of the Safety Surge, the City will design 25-30 intersections each year using street safety tools that will allow for better sightlines, slower speeds, clearer crossings, and defined spaces for all road users. 


These intersections will be prioritized based on safety history; neighborhood demographics including the number of children, older adults, and people with a disability; proximity to parks, schools, and community centers; plans for repaving and ramp construction; and needs otherwise identified by the residents of the neighborhood. 


TRAFFIC SIGNAL GUIDELINES


The Boston Transportation Department (BTD) has updated the City’s Traffic Signals Operations Design Policy with the goal of reducing dangerous conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and improving the overall comfort of pedestrians and turning drivers. The City aims to update at least 50 intersections a year using the new guidelines.


Last updated in 2018, the guidelines emphasize pedestrian safety by giving more time to crossing pedestrians and changes to reduce high-risk turns. Changes include:

  • Increased use of pedestrian head starts (giving pedestrians time to start crossing before drivers can go).
  • Increased use of “No Turn on Red” regulations and signage in high pedestrian locations.
  • Increased use of "auto recall" where pedestrians get a WALK sign automatically without having to request it.

No Turn on Red in particular will be used in downtown and neighborhood business districts, when crossing shared use paths or separated bike lanes, and near schools, senior centers, parks, libraries, mass transit stations, and hospitals.


In addition to the neighborhood streets included in the Safety Surge, the City is undertaking separate major corridor projects to improve safety in locations with a history of excessive speeds and crashes that have resulted in death and injury.


Some projects include:


Blue Hill Avenue

The City is currently engaged in a public process to improve transit and support all modes of travel along Blue Hill Ave. A major focus of the project will be to improve pedestrian safety. This will include improved crosswalks, shorter cross distances, and better signal timing.


Centre Street Safety Project, West Roxbury

The City will implement vital safety improvements along Centre Street in West Roxbury from the West Roxbury Parkway to Lagrange Street to address the ongoing history of fatal and serious injury crashes on this street. The City will soon engage with West Roxbury residents to address local concerns such as preserving parking and gather feedback on the safety redesign. The preliminary design includes:

  • Reducing Centre Street from four vehicle travel lanes to three (creating one lane in each direction with turn lanes).
  • Reducing pedestrian crossing distances and increasing visibility at both signalized and unsignalized crosswalks.
  • Retiming signals to increase pedestrian safety and reduce risk posed by turning vehicles.


Cummins Highway, Mattapan

Cummins Highway is among the most crash-prone corridors in the City. It will be redesigned in response to clearly stated community priority for safety, with shorter and safer crosswalks, better bus stops, new street lights, and dedicated space for bicycling. The project will also add trees and other green infrastructure, public art, and places for people to sit.


Tremont Street, South End

Currently under construction, changes are being made to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at every crosswalk on Tremont Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Arlington Street. The work includes raised crosswalks, changes to traffic signals, repaving the street, dedicated space for bicycling, improved bus boarding areas, and changes to curb regulations to support businesses and residents.
