Massachusetts Public Health Officials Urge Residents to Get Vaccinated Ahead of the Holiday Season

BOSTON (November 7, 2023) – As the weather gets colder and with holiday gatherings just around the corner, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) urges residents to get vaccinated.

“With Thanksgiving just two weeks away, now is a great time for those preparing to celebrate with friends and loved ones to get vaccinated for flu, COVID-19, and RSV, if eligible. Getting vaccinated now will maximize protection against these respiratory viruses,” said Public Health Commissioner Robert Goldstein, MD, PhD. “We want Massachusetts residents to have a safe, healthy, and fun holiday season and part of that is getting vaccinated to protect yourself and those around you.”

Everyone 6 months and older should get a seasonal flu vaccine and an updated COVID-19 vaccine, both of which can take up to two weeks to take full effect to protect against infection, serious illness and hospitalization, and reduce the chances of suffering the effects of Long COVID. The updated COVID-19 vaccine is effective against current variants and widely available for little or no cost to Massachusetts residents. Vaccine location information is available at mass.gov/CovidVaccine. Residents who cannot get to a vaccination location can schedule an appointment for in-home COVID and flu vaccination by going to mass.gov/VaccinesAtHome or calling 833-983-0485.

DPH is working with hospitals and providers to encourage vaccination of staff and patients. Through its Vaccine Equity Initiative, DPH is working closely with communities of color and other populations and communities hardest-hit by COVID-19 to improve access to vaccination. Through partnerships with community organizations, DPH will hold COVID-19 and flu clinics in many community locations and at upcoming cultural events. A listing of these community clinics that are accepting appointments and, in some locations, walk-ins, is updated weekly and can be found at mass.gov/MobileVax.

In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccination, many people are eligible for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination this year, including pregnant people, newborns, and many people 60 and older. COVID-19, flu, and RSV are the three viruses that are most likely to cause severe disease resulting in hospitalization and sometimes death.

While the holidays are a time for gathering, public health officials advise that if you are feeling unwell, you should stay home, get tested, and, if you test positive for flu or COVID-19, get treatment to prevent the spread of illness

“Adding vaccinations to your holiday season to-do list is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and people you’ll gather with, especially older adults, people who are immunocompromised, and pregnant people, who are at higher risk for severe complications,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Catherine Brown. “While it’s never too late to get your COVID or flu shots, getting vaccinated sooner rather than later will provide increased protection ahead of holiday celebrations, the start of winter, and peak respiratory disease season.”

Healey-Driscoll Administration Swears In Members of the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans Services and Governor's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans

BOSTON- Governor Maura T. Healey, in conjunction with Executive Office of Veterans Services Secretary Jon Santiago, swore in members of the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans Services (GVAC) and the Governor's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans (WVAC) this morning at the Grand Staircase of the Massachusetts State House.

In May, Governor Healey signed Executive Order 613, marking a significant milestone in reestablishing the Governor’s Advisory Council on Veterans Services (GVAC). The restructured GVAC council is comprised of 31 appointed members who will serve as a key advisory body to the Governor on all matters affecting veterans in Massachusetts.

Aligning with Chapter 115, Section 2 of M.G.L., the Governor and the Secretary of the Executive Office of Veterans Services have appointed the Governor's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans (WVAC), which consists of 17 appointed members. This commitment highlights the dedication of the Healey-Driscoll Administration to promote the interests of women veterans, ensuring their needs and rights are prioritized and advocated for within the state.

"The formation of these advisory bodies underscores our commitment to addressing the crucial needs of our veterans, including women veterans,” said Governor Maura T. Healey. “Their guidance and expertise will be invaluable as we strive to ensure that the contributions and sacrifices of our veterans are duly recognized and supported."

"Today's swearing-in of the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans Services and the Governor's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans exemplifies our unwavering commitment to serving the diverse needs of our veteran community," said Lieutenant Governor Driscoll. "By prioritizing the unique challenges and experiences of veterans, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all who have served our nation."

"These two councils stand as a testament to our continued dedication to recognizing the diverse experiences of our service members, playing a pivotal role in our mission to bolster comprehensive veterans' services throughout the state,” said Secretary Jon Santiago.

The ceremony also featured the "Many Faces of Veterans" exhibit in the Memorial Hall, celebrating the diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and invaluable contributions that veterans have made to Massachusetts and the nation.

Lily Endowment

Boston Children’s Museum Awarded $100,000 Grant from Lilly Endowment

Planning grant will focus on the role children’s museums can play in the character development of children

BOSTON, MA—November 7, 2023 — Boston Children’s Museum has recently received a $100,000 planning grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support the Museum in deepening and expanding the work in fostering character development in young children.

The premise of fostering character already underpins nearly every project and initiative undertaken by Boston Children’s Museum. This dimension of the Museum’s work is codified in its Learning Framework, a set of principles and philosophies that guide the development of new initiatives, exhibits, and programs. The Museum uses the term “Habits of Mind” to describe the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical ways of thinking and being that support the healthy development of children.

The planning grant, awarded to 20 museums, will extend for one year and allows participating museums to explore and learn more about character development and contemplate ways to incorporate character development into museum activities. At the end of one year, museums participating in the planning phase will be eligible to submit proposals for grants to implement character building activities in their museum.

“Children’s museums are in a unique position to support the development of character—the curiosity, creativity, persistence, empathy, and other personality traits that make individuals who they are,” said Melissa Higgins, Vice President Programs & Exhibits. “We’re very grateful to Lilly for the chance to further expand our work in this area by conducting research, learning from experts in the field of child development and character, and engaging in meaningful conversations about character with the parents, caregivers, and children we serve.”

Through the grant, Boston Children’s Museum will seek to answer a series of questions with the intention to enhance its character development work and define a clear vision for what a next phase implementation grant would entail.

            Kathleen Johnston

              (Boston Orange

(Veteran and Military salute to Service Day)”
