Governor Healey Nominates Maria Durant to the Superior Court

Experienced trial attorney brings more than three decades of criminal and civil litigation experience

BOSTON – Governor Maura Healey today nominated Maria Durant to serve as an Associate Justice of the Superior Court. Her nomination will now be considered by the Governor's Council for confirmation. 

“Maria Durant has spent more than three decades taking on complex cases and earning the respect of her colleagues for her skill, judgment and integrity,” said Governor Maura Healey. “She has seen our justice system from many sides – as a prosecutor, defense attorney and civil litigator – and she understands the responsibility that comes with serving on the bench. I am proud to nominate Maria to the Superior Court, and I know she will serve the people of Massachusetts with fairness and integrity.”

“Maria Durant brings decades of courtroom experience, sound judgment and a deep commitment to the law,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “She will bring that experience to the bench every day, and we look forward to working with the Governor’s Council on her confirmation.”

The Superior Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction for Massachusetts, with 82 justices serving in 20 courthouses across all 14 counties. The court hears major civil and criminal cases across the state, including first-degree murder cases, and has jurisdiction over a range of other complex civil and administrative matters.

Governor Healey has previously nominated 22 judges to the Superior Court: Tracy Duncan, Gillian Feiner, John Fraser, Ira Gant, Keren Goldenberg,  Lynn Feigenbaum, Christopher Spring, Julie Green, Charles W. Groce, Sarah Hamilton, Adam Hornstine, Sarah G. Kim, Amy Karangekis, Emily Karstetter, Matthew Nestor, Michael Pineault, Sarah Joss, Adam Sisitsky,Deepika Shukla, Thomas Townsend, Jeffrey Trapani and Asha White.

About the Nominee: 

Maria Durant is a highly experienced attorney who has spent three decades advising individuals and companies in connection with criminal, civil, and regulatory enforcement matters and related complex civil litigation. She has litigated a broad range of federal and state matters involving charges including mail, wire, bank, and healthcare fraud, false statements, public corruption, unlawful kickbacks, controlled substance violations, operating under the influence, conspiracy, and murder.

Attorney Durant has also represented clients in complex civil litigation involving claims of breach of contract, fraudulent product promotion, manufacturing and design defects, and wrongful death claims across the pharmaceutical, medical device, pharmacy benefit management, and healthcare services industries. 

From 2020 to 2024, she served as the Office Managing Partner of Hogan Lovells and currently serves on the firm's Healthcare and Life Sciences Leadership Committee and as Inclusion Lead for its Boston office. Earlier in her career, Attorney Durant served as a Special Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted violent crimes, drug offenses, motor vehicle offenses, and theft cases in the Boston Municipal Court.

She is a former Adjunct Legal Writing Professor at Suffolk University Law School and currently serves as a Career Development advisor to students at Boston College Law School. Attorney Durant holds a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Communications from Suffolk University and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School, where she served as Managing Editor of the Suffolk University Law Review.
