MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES THE VISION ZERO BOSTON TRANSPORTATION SAFETY CONCERNS MAP

Residents and Visitors Can Report Their Safety Concerns and Help Inform Future Vision Zero Efforts

BOSTON - Friday, January 22, 2016 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the launch of the Vision Zero Boston Safety Concerns Map, an online tool that allows people to identify locations where they have concerns about transportation safety. Boston residents and visitors are encouraged to visit visionzeroboston.org/input, select the location of their concern, and add it to the map. People can also enter additional comments to concerns that were reported by others. "People who live and work in Boston know best about what is happening on their streets, and we look forward to engaging them in our transportation strategies as we work towards eliminating all traffic-related fatalities on our streets," said Mayor Walsh. "The Safety Concerns map is a great opportunity for people to share their ideas about how to improve roadway safety and create better and safer streets across our city."   The map is not a substitute for BOS:311, the system that is used to report non-emergency issues to the city, such as broken street lights. Instead, the data from this map will be used collectively by the Vision Zero Task Force to identify patterns in behavior and street design to help set priorities for future Vision Zero efforts. Inserts describing the map are being sent to each household in Boston as part of the census mailing.   Last December, the Mayor released the Vision Zero Boston Action Plan, which outlines the city's plan for eliminating serious and fatal crashes in Boston by 2030. The Action Plan promises action in four critical areas: reducing speeds and building safer streets; tackling distracted and impaired driving; engaging with Bostonians; and holding ourselves accountable. The full action plan is available at visionzeroboston.org.   Since November, Vision Zero Task Force members have been meeting with residents from across Boston to better understand their safety concerns and working on interventions in the Vision Zero Priority Corridors. This map represents another tool that Task Force will use to get feedback from the people of Boston.
