Champions Return for 2014 Boston Marathon Weekend
Champions Return for 2014 Boston Marathon® Weekend
Joan Samuelson, Amby Burfoot, and Gelindo Bordin to run Marathon.
Bill Rodgers to serve as grand marshal of the Boston Marathon.
Greg Meyer, Jack Fultz, and Uta Pippig to participate in weekend activities.
BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that several former champions of the Boston Marathon® will return to participate in events surrounding the 118th
Boston Marathon, to be held on Monday, April 21, 2014.
Champions Joan Benoit Samuelson (ME; 1979, 1983), Amby Burfoot (CT;
1968), and Gelindo Bordin (ITA; 1990) will join 36,000 entrants in this
year’s running of the world’s oldest annual marathon.
In
addition, Bill Rodgers (MA; 1975, 1978-1980) will serve as the grand
marshal of the race while Greg Meyer (MI; 1983) will serve as the finish
line announcer. Jack Fultz (MA; 1976) is the
Training Advisor for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) team and
Uta Pippig (CO; 1994-1996) is running the B.A.A 5K on Saturday, April 19, along with Meyer and a record field size of 10,000 entrants.
Samuelson,
56, is a two-time Boston champion and the first-ever women’s Olympic
Marathon champion, winning gold at the 1984 Olympic Games in 2:24:52.
Her time of 2:50:29 in the 2013 Boston Marathon
was the fastest marathon ever run by a woman in the 55-59 age group. A
resident of Freeport, ME, Samuelson entered last year’s race on the 30th
anniversary of her 1983 victory with a goal of running faster than
2:52:43, less than one minute slower
for each year since her Boston victory. Her 2:22:43 win in 1983 was a
world best performance at that time. She is a John Hancock Elite Athlete
Team Ambassador and one of the sport’s most recognizable and popular
personalities.
Burfoot,
67, is one of more than 4,500 participants in this year’s Boston
Marathon who reached the half marathon checkpoint or later in last
year’s race but were unable to cross the Boylston
Street finish line. His recorded 40K split was 4:11:25. In 2013,
Burfoot commemorated the 45th anniversary of his 1968
victory, which made him the Boston Marathon’s first American champion in
11 years. A Mystic, CT resident, Burfoot was coached
by the late John J. Kelley, the first, and currently lone, B.A.A.
Running Club member to win the Boston Marathon (1957).
Bordin,
55, is the only male in history to win both the Olympic Games Marathon
and the Boston Marathon. A resident of Biella, Italy, he won the 1988
Olympic Games Marathon in Seoul, South Korea,
running 2:10:32. His 2:08:19 victory in Boston in 1990 made him the
only champion in the men’s open division to represent Italy and the most
recent champion in the men’s open division to represent a European
nation.
Rodgers,
66, will serve as the grand marshal for the 2014 Boston Marathon. A
longtime Boston resident, Rodgers is a four-time Boston champion. He
will ride in a pace car ahead of the lead runners,
heralding to spectators along the course that thousands of runners will
soon be coming. The B.A.A. has reserved the grand marshal role as a
position of recognition and honor. Rodgers is also a John Hancock Elite
Team Ambassador and participates in health and
wellness initiatives for the company throughout the year. Last year’s
grand marshals were Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb and Sara Mae Berman, Boston
champions and pioneers of women’s marathon running.
Meyer,
58, will serve as the finish line announcer at this year’s Boston
Marathon, along with Dan Roche, Sports Anchor/Reporter for CBS Boston’s
WBZ-TV News. Meyer, of Belmont, MI, is the most
recent American champion of the men’s open division of the Boston
Marathon, having won the 1983 race in 2:09:00. Since 2012, he has served
as a coach for principal sponsor John Hancock Financial’s Employee
Training Team for the Boston Marathon. This year,
he will also run the B.A.A. 5K on Saturday, April 19. B.A.A. Executive
Director Tom Grilk was the finish line announcer at the Boston Marathon
from 1979 through 2013. This year, Grilk will be present at the start
line in Hopkinton on race morning and will
return to Boston in the afternoon.
Fultz,
65, is the Training Advisor for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge
(DFMC) team of runners in this year’s Boston Marathon. Fultz’s 1976
victory came in 100-plus degree (Fahrenheit) heat,
on a day now known as the “run for the hoses.” This year, DFMC
celebrates its 25th year and includes hundreds of athletes
with a goal of raising $5.3 million (USD) for cancer research at
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. To date, DFMC has raised more
than $61 million (USD) to enable leading-edge medical science
initiatives conducted through Dana-Farber’s Claudia Adams Barr Program
in Innovative Basic Cancer Research. Dana-Farber was among the first
organizations accepted by the B.A.A. into its Boston Marathon
Official Charity Program in 1990.
Pippig,
48, is running this year’s B.A.A. 5K. She won three consecutive Boston
titles, including the Centennial Boston Marathon in 1996. A native of
Germany, Pippig now resides in Longmont,
CO. Many other Boston Marathon champions, pioneers, and significant
figures in race history will also be in town to participate in Boston
Marathon weekend in a number of ways.
The
2014 B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 8:00 a.m., two
days prior to the Boston Marathon. A record field size of 10,000
entrants will participate in the event, which starts
and finishes at historic Boston Common.
Defending
champions Lelisa Desisa, of Ethiopia (men’s open division) and Rita
Jeptoo, of Kenya (women’s open division), members of John Hancock’s
Elite Athlete Team, will look to repeat as champions,
as will Hiroyuki Yamamoto, of Japan (men’s push rim wheelchair
division), and Tatyana McFadden, of Champaign, Ill. (women’s push rim
wheelchair division).
(Analyses
of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice
(Analyses of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (簡稱AIs))”,刻正舉辦一連三場講座。
Jennifer
Jennifer
JFK Memorial Dr., Braintree, MA 02184)

City offers trauma coping and counseling resources as anniversary of marathon attack approaches
City offers trauma coping and counseling resources as anniversary of marathon attack approaches
Free and confidential support available in-person, over the phone, and online
BOSTON
– To help support the emotional wellness of residents and community
members around the upcoming anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon
bombings, the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) has organized a set
of free and confidential resources for the public. Starting tonight,
there will be a series of neighborhood workshops focused on general
emergency preparedness and resilience, a community forum near Copley
Square to address mental health concerns around the anniversary, and
drop-in and over-the-phone counseling offered by trained clinicians.
Tips and additional resources to help adults and children cope with
trauma are available online at www.BPHC.org.
BPHC’s Office of Public Health Preparedness will sponsor three community preparedness and resilience workshops through its “Get Ready, Be Safe, Stay Healthy” initiative.
The workshops offer a mix of resources that are both specific to the
marathon anniversary and useful for dealing with other traumatic
experiences. The sessions will include information on coping,
self-care, and recognizing when additional assistance might be needed.
The schedule of workshops is as follows:
Tuesday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m.
BCYF Mildred Avenue Community Center
5 Mildred Avenue, Mattapan
*In partnership with the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition
Thursday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m.
BCYF Grove Hall Community Center
51 Geneva Avenue, Roxbury
*In partnership with Project RIGHT
Monday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m.
The Salvation Army Kroc Center
650 Dudley Street, Dorchester
“We
understand that the anniversary may trigger a lot of emotions for
anyone impacted by last year’s attack, and we want to make sure people
have access to the support that they may need,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer,
executive director of BPHC. “We also recognize that certain
communities are exposed to trauma and violence on an ongoing basis, and
we hope that our workshops give people some tools to build resilience
and care for loved ones.”
There
will be a community forum this Friday, April 11 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at
the YWCA, located at 140 Clarendon Street. The forum, which will be
led by a licensed mental health clinician, is an opportunity for Copley
area residents and community members to learn coping strategies for
addressing trauma. The first anniversary of a disaster is often the
hardest for survivors because it can be difficult to know how to mark
the event. People may experience a range of emotions in such
situations, and clinicians will be able to help attendees process those
feelings.
For
the next several weeks, BPHC will also provide drop-in counseling
services each Tuesday evening in the McKim Courtyard Room of the main
branch of the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. No appointment is
necessary for the free sessions, which will take place from 5:00-7:00
p.m. on Tuesday April 8, 15, 22, and 29.
Starting
next week, clinicians with the Mayor’s Health Line will offer
phone-based counseling. The Mayor’s Health Line is open on weekdays
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and clinicians will return any messages
left afterhours on the following day. People are encouraged to call
617-534-5050 to speak with a clinician.
On
Marathon Monday (April 21), the hotline will be staffed with clinicians
from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In-person drop-in counseling will be
offered during the same time that day at Our Lady of Victories Church,
located at 27 Isabella Street near Copley Square.
Last
year, BPHC and partners from the American Red Cross, the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health, Riverside Community Care, the Salvation
Army, and the U.S. Health and Human Services Mental Health Team
delivered over 600 hours of counseling to thousands of people in the
days after the bombings.

Who We
Are
This year
marks the 25th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Movement. In spring 1989,
millions of Chinese took to the streets calling for political reform. The
nationwide movement ended on June 4 with the People’s Liberation Army firing
on unarmed civilians in the capital city of Beijing. Tiananmen remains a
politically taboo topic in China today.
We
are a group of students at Harvard College hailing from different regions of
the world and embodying a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and
perspectives. We were not yet born in 1989 but were brought together by a
seminar “Rebels with a Cause: Tiananmen in History and Memory” taught by Dr.
Rowena He. During our time together, we studied the primary source
materials of the Tiananmen Movement, heard personal accounts of student
participants themselves, and explored the Tiananmen archives of the
Harvard–Yenching Library. We imagined ourselves into the minds of the
authorities and civilians, touched the protesters’ blood-stained clothes, and
re-enacted the night of June 3rd, trying to put ourselves in the shoes of the
protesters who then were around the same age as we are now. We debated and
questioned everything along the way. Our
learning experience shows that with free access to information and free
inquiry, we as young people can indeed come to our own understanding of
historical truth.
There
have been hundreds of Tiananmen events in the past 24 years all over the
world, but we are excited that we as undergraduate students are putting
together a conference for the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen
Movement. Our conference will be held on April 26, a
historically important date in 1989 when the first official judgment of the
movement was printed in the lead editorial of the Party’s newspaper, the
People’s Daily, designating the student demonstrations as premeditated and
organized turmoil with anti-Party and anti-socialist motives.
The conference
will include student presentation panels with faculty members serving as
chairs, and cross-generational conversations among students and journalists
who covered 1989, student participants and survivors of 1989, and scholars who
study the topic. For us college students who were not born in 1989, Tiananmen
is history; for the invited speakers, Tiananmen is memory.
It
is our hope that through this conference we may give a voice to those who were
silenced and that this voice will help keep the memory of June 4
alive. Join us!

Ar thur
Waldon
Lynn Chang
