MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION OF ARTISTS FOR HUMANITY'S EPICENTER TO DOUBLE VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION OF ARTISTS FOR HUMANITY'S EPICENTER TO DOUBLE VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
New 52,000 Square Foot Building Designed to be the Largest Energy Positive Commercial Facility on the East Coast
BOSTON - Monday, April 25, 2016 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the proposed expansion of Artists For Humanity's EpiCenter to help Boston meet the City's dual objectives of providing living wage jobs for urban youth and filling business demand for skilled workers. Mayor Walsh was joined by Artists For Humanity's Executive and Artistic Director Susan Rodgerson as well as by the project's sponsors: Liberty Mutual Insurance Chairman and CEO David H. Long; Cabot Corporation CEO Sean Keohane; and Vice President of Global Gillette Business at Procter & Gamble John Mang.
Based in the Fort Point Community of South Boston, Artists For Humanity is a national leader in youth arts enterprise whose mission is to bridge economic, racial, and social divisions by providing under-resourced urban youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in art and design.

"Artists for Humanity is building a new generation of Boston-based artists and creative thinkers, and this expansion project will allow them to provide even more opportunities for our youth to become involved in creative work environments," said Mayor Walsh. "Their innovative approach combines arts and culture with STEM curriculum to give our young people the skills to think critically and obtain well-paying careers in the future."

Artists For Humanity is the largest onsite employer of teens in Boston and demand for services has exceeded its current space.To meet the demand for services, Artists For Humanity plans to expand its existing EpiCenter with an additional 52,000 square feet to expand existing initiatives and accommodate new ones. Plans for the expansion include:

  • Double its employment of high school-aged teens;
  • Develop vocational programs in technology-based arts media and trades;
  • Engage the community through a fully-equipped Makers Studio;
  • Craft a unique community-based space dedicated to the urban youth experience;
  • Expand its successful event space for corporate and social celebrations;
  • Connect youth through partnerships with universities and synergistic industries; and
  • Be the vibrant center for creativity in the Innovation District.
The vision for the new facility has been made possible through donations from three sponsors: Liberty Mutual Insurance; P&G/Gillette; and Cabot Corporation. A groundbreaking for the new facility is scheduled for the fall of 2016.

To help Artists For Humanity realize its vision for the new facility, Liberty Mutual Insurance donated $1.5 million - an initial $1 million to establish the Liberty Mutual Career Center and, as announced by Liberty Mutual Chairman and CEO David Long at today's kickoff event, and an additional $500,000 to help AFH meet its fundraising goals. The Career Center will provide space forsector-specific apprenticeships and advanced certificate-based trainingincluding experiential learning and STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) skill development.

"Artists for Humanity is a bridge that links Boston businesses with the next generation of skilled, creative, technologically-savvy employees," said Liberty Mutual Chairman and CEO David H. Long. "Artists for Humanity's mission to provide under-resourced youth with the skills needed to succeed aligns perfectly with Liberty's philanthropic aspiration to change lives and transform communities of our most vulnerable neighbors. We are honored to help bring to fruition this new Career Center that holds the promise of changing the lives of local youths and giving Boston the workforce it needs to be an innovation leader."

"A few years back, Artists for Humanity shared a new vision with us," said John Mang, Vice President, Global Gillette, The Procter & Gamble Company. "This vision took a little piece of land and upon it, create something bold, inspiring and far-reaching.  This vision enables Artists for Humanity to more than double the number of teens it reaches every year, while enhancing the local community through new services and offerings such as a fully equipped Makers Studio. This dream was so compelling that we wanted to help make it a reality.  That is why we made an unprecedented decision to donate a parcel of our land to Artists for Humanity to bring its vision to life."

In 2004, AFH completed the Artists For Humanity EpiCenter - the nation's 9th LEED Platinum building - a facility dedicated to providing young people with employment, opportunity and connections.  Working with Behnisch Architekten, Artists For Humanity's new expansion is slated to become the largest energy positive commercial facility on the East Coast. The project includes passive design, radiant heating & cooling, and an innovative 235 kW 'wrapper' of mesh-integrated photovoltaics to power the building.

To help achieve this energy positive goal, Cabot Corporation, donated $400,000 worth of its highly insulating aerogel. This product will be used in the unique SOLERA® + LUMIRA® aerogel daylighting systems created to provide exceptional thermal performance, as well as natural light distribution and diffusion.

"We are proud to support Artists for Humanity, as this pioneering and iconic facility will not only be a model that can be replicated for green building and renewable energy efforts across the globe, but will demonstrate the energy-saving capabilities of our aerogel technology and the feasibility of green development," said Sean Keohane, president and CEO, Cabot Corporation.

MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF BOSTON'S FIRST CHIEF DATA OFFICER TO ADVANCE BOSTON'S ROLE AS A DATA-DRIVEN LEADER
Andrew Therriault to lead Boston's Citywide Analytics Team

BOSTON - Wednesday, May 25, 2016 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the appointment of Andrew Therriault to serve as the City's first Chief Data Officer. Therriault will work to advance Boston's role as a leader in data-driven government and will lead the Citywide Analytics Team, building collaborations with outside partners and serving as the public face for the City's data analytics program.

"The Citywide Analytics Team is an invaluable asset, helping to keep Boston at the forefront of data-driven solutions that provide excellent services to the people of Boston," said Mayor Walsh. "I am excited to welcome Andrew to the team to build on our successes in using data to enhance city operations and improve quality of life for our residents. I look forward to working closely together to develop innovative ways to deliver the best possible services to the people of Boston."

Therriault will join the City's team after serving as Director of Data Science for the Democratic National Committee, in Washington, D.C. He previously served as Senior Data Scientist for Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and Director of Research for Pivotal Targeting. A native of Haverhill, Therriault completed B.A, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at New York University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University.

This new position builds on the momentum of the Citywide Analytics Team initiatives, which just recently announced the launch of the City's new data dashboard that tracks the demographics of the City's workforce. In addition, the Citywide Analytics Team also released its first annual Year-In-Review, which highlights several case studies from 2015 in which data was used to improve quality of life and improve government operations.

As a member of the leadership team of the Department of Innovation and Technology, Therriault will manage Boston's Citywide Analytics and GIS Teams. Therriault will also work closely with other Chiefs and Commissioners to expand the use of visualization and analytics to improve operations throughout the City.

"I am thrilled to be joining Boston's Citywide Analytics Team as the city's first Chief Data Officer," Therriault said. "Local governments have a tremendous impact on their citizens' lives, and Boston has been a pioneer in using data and analytics to improve every aspect of City services. It's an exciting time to be part of such an innovative and growing department, and I look forward to leading the Citywide Analytics Team to even greater heights ahead."

The Citywide Analytics Team has led more than a dozen projects across the city, which are captured in their first annual Year-In-Review.

Highlights include:

  • Launched CityScore, an initiative that compiles key performance metrics from city departments every day to provide an at-a-glance view of the City's overall performance;
  • Created data dashboards, which provides the Mayor and executives with tools for data-driven management and ways to measure the impact of City services on quality of life;
  • Building Intelligence System, which combines data from many sources to give firefighters up-to-date hazard information en route to fire scenes;
  • Used traffic data from the Waze app to improve the flow of vehicles on the roadway and increase safety for vulnerable road users
  • Hosted Hub Hackathons to engage the community with Boston's Open data portal and help residents explore topics that matter to their community.

ABOUT BOSTON'S CITYWIDE ANALYTICS TEAM

By combining modern data analysis and visualizations with a deeply engaged approach to performance improvement and change management, the team works with departments across the City to solve challenging problems, build a more effective government and deliver better outcomes for the people who live and work in Boston.

The Malden Police Department Joins Statewide Effort to Reduce Distracted Driving Crashes

The Malden Police Department Joins Statewide Effort to Reduce Distracted Driving Crashes

Monday, April 25, 2016
The Malden Police Department will partner with the 202 eligible local Massachusetts law enforcement agencies and the Massachusetts State Police in the national “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” mobilization to crack down on texting while driving. The campaign, which combines traditional and innovative enforcement strategies, began on April 8 and continues through April 29. The initiative is funded by a grant administered by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Highway Safety Division from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Driving and texting is illegal and irresponsible.  People who break our state’s texting law will be subjected to enforcement action. Distracted Driving is a major problem in Massachusetts, and we’re trying to keep the public safe through enforcement and education. We will be deploying additional resources to enforce the law,” said Chief Kevin Molis.
Texting while driving was outlawed in Massachusetts in 2010.  Adult drivers who write, send, or read electronic messages or browse the Internet while driving face a $100 fine for a first offense – even if the vehicle is stopped in traffic.  Teen drivers under 18 are entirely prohibited from using mobile phones and other electronic devices while driving, including to make phone calls.  The fine for a juvenile first offense is $100, a 60 day license suspension, and required completion of a driver attitudinal course.
These costly violations underscore the danger inherent in Distracted Driving. In 2014, across the United States, 3,179 people were killed and an additional 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. A 2013 study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) found that any activity that diverts a driver’s eyes from the road for two seconds or more, such as texting or using a mobile device, increases crash risk by a factor of three. This level of impairment is similar to driving drunk, with a blood alcohol concentration of .08.
“Texting and driving requires motorists to take their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off the task of driving. It creates the proverbial ‘perfect storm’ for a crash, and no one has the right to put another person’s life at risk like that,” said Chief Molis. “We are serious about enforcing texting laws.”

Astellas Oncology C3 PrizeTM to Bring Bright Ideas in Cancer Care to Life with $100,000 in Grants

Astellas Oncology C3 PrizeTM to Bring Bright Ideas in Cancer Care to Life with $100,000 in Grants
Finalists invited to pitch ideas to panel of judges including Robert Herjavec, technology entrepreneur, passionate cancer caregiver and star of
ABC’s Emmy Award-winning hit television show Shark Tank

BOSTON, April 25, 2016 – Astellas Pharma Inc. (TSE: 4503) today launched the C3 PrizeTM, a challenge designed to inspire non-medicine innovations that improve the cancer care experience for patients, caregivers and loved ones. Entries will be accepted through August 8 and following a live pitch to a panel of judges including Robert Herjavec, star of ABC’s Emmy Award-winning hit television show Shark Tank, three winners will be awarded a total of $100,000 in grants as well as membership to healthcare technology incubator MATTER to bring their ideas to life. The C3 Prize was announced today to a group of 1,100 global leaders in cancer care gathered at the World Medical Innovation Forum organized by Partners HealthCare.
By 2030, the global cancer burden is expected to grow to 22.2 million cancer cases.1 Despite significant advances in cancer treatments, patients with cancer and their caregivers face significant obstacles to receiving or providing optimal care through all phases of living with cancer.
“As the number of people diagnosed with cancer rises, so does the need for innovative tools and resources to help patients and those that care for them navigate the journey from diagnosis to hopefully survivorship,” said Mark Reisenauer, senior vice president, oncology sales and marketing, Astellas. “We’re launching the C3 Prize because we want to hear fresh ideas and perspectives from people who want to make a difference in the lives of those living with cancer.”
The C3 Prize seeks submissions in four areas where patients living with cancer and the cancer community face the toughest obstacles along the cancer continuum: navigating the health care system, adhering to complex medical care requirements, coordinating care and surviving life post-treatment.
Five finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas in front of a live panel of judges including Herjavec at the Stanford Medicine X conference on September 17, 2016 in Stanford, California.
1

Grants will then be awarded to the three leading ideas – one $50,000 grant to the grand prize winner and two $25,000 grants to two additional winners. Additionally, winners will receive mentorship from Astellas and a one year membership to MATTER.
C3 Prize submissions can be made at C3Prize.com and are due by midnight Central Time on August 8, 2016. Entries will be evaluated based on plausibility of idea, creativity and originality of innovation and the ability of the entrant to operationalize/implement the innovative idea for future application.

Know Before You Throw! Special Meeting Regarding Proper Recycling Procedures

Wednesday, May 25, 2016
Malden’s recycling and trash contractor, JRM, will host a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 6-7 PM at the Malden Senior Center, 7 Washington Street for the purpose of discussing the proper ways to recycle (1) paper and cardboard; and (2) glass, plastic and aluminum in Malden’s dual stream recycling program. JRM has recently reported that many households are not recycling properly and as a result, fewer materials are actually being recycled. JRM will begin enforcing a strict recycling program and effective June 6, 2015, your recycling will not be collected if (1) materials are in the wrong recycling bin or (2) non-recycling materials (trash) are improperly placed in a recycling bin. Residents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting.
Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of a new app from ReCollect which, with few simple clicks, will provide updates about trash and recycling information. The “Waste Wizard” feature allows users to search for items to learn how to dispose of them properly. The app allows users to set reminders about dates for trash and recycling collection days as well as special collection events such as yard waste, Christmas tree pickup, semi-annual paint and hazardous waste pickup, along with disposal fees for large appliances, and rules for bulk items. Residents will also be notified about any delays in collection due to inclement weather or a holiday. Please visitwww.cityofmalden.org/trash.
