浙大校友迎新慶中秋

波士頓浙江大學校友會9月19日在麻州納提克公園聚會燒烤，慶祝中秋兼迎新，80多人歡聚一堂。

事業有成的會長倪繼紅在聚會後特地感謝當天熱心當義工的校友們，包括于欣慰，郝進，高學宇，王澄宇，鄭磊巍，初芒，吳釗，葉青等等，強調如果沒有這些校友熱心當義工，出席校友們不會玩得那麼開心。

其中的鄭磊巍等幾個人，一大早八點多就趕到活動現場起爐頭，鋪桌子。于欣慰，郝進等人精打細算的買食物，花工夫事先醃製，還在報名人數上升時，趕緊補買。

校友們有的新來乍到，有的已是本地識途老馬，還攜家帶眷的陸續來到，會場十分熱鬧。一夥人幫著包蘑菇，包玉米，再分頭燒烤，邊吃，邊玩，邊互相介紹，還一起打排球，玩紙牌，都說這樣的聚會，很有和家人相處的感覺。

會長倪繼紅在會末預祝校友們中秋節愉快之際，也提醒校友們，出門在外靠朋友，有事儘管和校友會聯絡，大家彼此扶持，就生活更愉快。

Planning Grant Will Allow BPHC, Healthcare Partners to Continue Focus on Asthma Study and Reduction

BOSTON – Tuesday, September 22, 2015 – The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) today announced that is has received a $327,000 grant to support planning the implementation of a research program focused on children at high risk of poor asthma outcomes. The grant is funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Creating Asthma Empowerment Collaborations to Reduce Asthma Disparities and was awarded to BPHC, in partnership with Boston Medical Center, for the creation of its Boston High-risk Asthma Program Pathway in Youth (BHAPPY) study.

“Boston is rich with resources for families and individuals with asthma, but sometimes accessing these resources can be time consuming and confusing,” said Dr. Huy Nguyen, Interim Director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “This grant will allow us to test having a patient navigator work with the families to integrate services and care across clinical, home, school, childcare and other settings to ensure families have access to all the resources available, putting the patient first.”

“This is an enormous opportunity to address extreme racial disparities in Boston, ensuring kids under five get the best medical care possible in their community,” said Megan Sandel, MD MPH of Boston Medical Center and Co-Principal Investigator for the project.

The funding requires grantees to ensure that interventions for proper asthma care are taking place in multiple settings, which include in schools, childcare centers, clinical settings and at home. Once the planning period is finished, BPHC will apply for additional funding, up to $5.5 million over six years, to support the actual clinical trial, assess of the sustainability of the interventions and define best practices for implementation of interventions.

The BHAPPY study recognizes that Black, Latino and low-income youth suffer a disproportionate burden of asthma in the United States. In Boston, this asthma inequitable burden is particularly striking in children ages 0-5. The study leverages an existing public health/community/healthcare partnership to address asthma disparities among these children receiving asthma care at primary care clinics serving predominantly low income Black and Latino families in Boston and to ensure communication between clinical sites and schools or child care centers to ensure that children are healthy and able to attend school or childcare, sleep at night and be active.

The planning process for the BHAPPY study aims to engage community stakeholders, such as health care providers, parents of asthmatic children, school/childcare providers, insurers, other community partners to design best practices; develop a process to implement the BHAPPY asthma pathway, using this feedback; and develop an implementation study to test the effectiveness of the intervention on outcomes.

Also involved in the planning year will be Health Resources in Action, who will undertake surveys and focus groups to gather information and will involve childcare sites, Boston Public Schools and Boston ABCD, which oversees Head Start programs, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which will ensure coordination with statewide asthma initiatives.

BPHC has been a national leader in asthma prevention and control since 1998. From 2008-2012, the City saw a significant decrease in Emergency Department usage due to asthma among children under age five. Additionally, Black and Latino children in Boston, who usually have particularly high rates of Emergency Department use due to asthma, also experienced significant reductions during this period.

The Commission operates a number of initiatives to help children and adults manage the symptoms of and the environmental contributors to asthma. These initiatives include free home visits for qualifying Boston residents conducted by a trained community health worker to help reinforce the individual’s asthma management plan and provide education, low cost supplies and referrals to reduce environmental asthma triggers. The Commission also works with the City’s Inspectional Services Department to conduct home inspections to identify and address asthma triggers that violate the Massachusetts Sanitary Code and work with property owners to eliminate these poor housing conditions.

BOSTON - Tuesday, September 22, 2015 - Today, in honor of National Voter Registration Day, the City of Boston Elections Department and the Mayor's Civic Engagement Cabinet will be joined by Boston Public Schools in hosting a series of activities to ensure that the people of Boston have updated voter registration and are registered to vote. "It is important that residents exercise their right to vote," said Mayor Walsh. "We live in a democracy and that is what makes our country great. In Boston, many of our residents are engaged in this civic process, but we want them to take it a step further by helping a friend register or teaching a young person how critical it is to let their voices be heard." With October 14th 2015 being the last day to register in the upcoming election, residents are encouraged to update their address or register to vote for the November 3rd Municipal Election. Those who do not wish to enroll in a political party or are looking to be "Independent" should select "No Party Unenrolled." CATHERINE GREIG INDICTED ON CRIMINAL CONTEMPT

 

BOSTON – Catherine Greig, longtime companion of convicted killer James “Whitey” Bulger, was indicted today in U.S. District Court in Boston in connection with her refusal to testify before a grand jury. 

 

“Ms. Greig was ordered by the Court to testify before a grand jury about whether others assisted Mr. Bulger while he lived on the lam for 16 years,” said United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz.  “By refusing to comply with that order, Ms. Greig has committed a new crime and this indictment seeks to hold her accountable.  The grand jury is entitled to her testimony and flouting a federal court’s order has substantial consequences.” 

 

"Catherine Greig has yet again failed to do the right thing,” said Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division.  “Her refusal to testify has hindered the FBI's efforts to seek justice for the victims of his crimes.  Our efforts to find those who assisted them during their lives as fugitives will not stop despite the fact that Ms. Greig has refused to testify."

 

Catherine E. Greig, 64, was indicted on one count of criminal contempt.  The indictment alleges that on Dec. 9, 2014, and continuing through Sept. 22, 2015, Greig refused to testify before a federal grand jury regarding an investigation into whether other individuals assisted Bulger while he was a fugitive from 1995 through 2011.  In 2012, Greig was convicted of identity fraud and harboring James J. Bulger, and was sentenced to eight years in federal prison. 

 

The charge of criminal contempt provides for a prison sentence to be served subsequent to her current eight-year prison sentence and a fine.  There is no fixed maximum penalty for criminal contempt, so courts may impose any sentence.  Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. 

 

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary B. Murrane of Ortiz’s Major Crimes Unit. 

 

The details contained in the indictment are allegations.  The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

First annual WE BOS Week to be held October 12-16

BOSTON - Monday, September 21, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced Women Entrepreneurs Boston (WE BOS), a new City of Boston initiative that will advance Boston's women entrepreneurs by providing the skills, technical assistance and network women need to launch and grow their business. "We know that women led businesses continue to face challenges including limited funding, challenges in scaling, and finding mentors and networks to support them as they grow," said Mayor Walsh. "I am proud to kick-off WE BOS to better address these challenges and promote economic equity in Boston." Kara Miller, a South Boston resident, will be managing the new initiative. Kara has spent the last two years building the Women on Main program and will expand its work through WE BOS. In partnership with the Mayor's office of Women's Advancement and Office of Business Development, WE BOS will support all women entrepreneurs, including startups, home-based businesses and the established brick-and-mortar mainstays of Boston's neighborhoods, with the goal to increase the number of well-established women entrepreneurs in the City of Boston and to strengthen and grow Boston's existing women-owned businesses. To begin its work in these areas, from October 12-16, WE BOS will bring together leaders in Boston's entrepreneurial ecosystem to launch Boston's first-ever Women Entrepreneurs Week.   During this week, Boston's women entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to attend events throughout the City featuring high-profile speakers, skill-building workshops, round-table discussions, and networking opportunities to help women entrepreneurs build their networks and learn new skills to build and scale their businesses.   Women make up more than half of Boston's residents, yet only 1 dollar of every 23 dollars in conventional bank loans and less than 3 percent of venture capital funding is allocated to women-owned businesses. Today in Boston, 18,709 women-owned businesses employ 26,209 people.  These businesses account for more that $4 billion in sales and contribute almost $7.6 billion to the Gross City Product. Women-owned businesses also increase consumer spending by $1.4 billion and provide more than $208 million in tax revenue.  In spite of this, women owned businesses receive less bank, venture capital, and angel funding than their male counterparts.  To guide its work, WE BOS will be working in three priority areas:  funding, scaling, and mentoring and networking.   WE BOS is the next step in the Walsh Administration's commitment to supporting the success of Boston's women entrepreneurs.  WE BOS builds on the success of the City's Women on Main initiative, which has assisted more than 700 women entrepreneurs since its inception.  Women on Main has partnered with Babson's Center for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership, and their Women Innovating Now (WIN) lab.  Each year five Women on Main Fellows are selected to participate in the WIN lab, an incubator that helps women entrepreneurs take their business from idea to launch.  In addition, the Women on Main initiative has hosted an array of events including the Women's Business Accelerator, which brought together 100 women, and was presented in partnership with The Center for Women and Enterprise, Babson, and the Boston Women's Entrepreneurial Council.

波士頓市長保證昆士中學一定蓋新校舍 在那兒還不知道

(本報記者周菊子波士頓報導)波士頓市長馬丁華殊（Martin Walsh）上週末在華埠表示，儘管他支持的在波士頓辦奧運，在波士頓建賭場（casino）都沒成功，但他支持的波士頓華埠校舍重建，一定會做到。

            馬丁華殊指出，由於在高速公路旁的第25號地段蓋學校，不但安全問題是顧慮，耗資過鉅也是問題。不過，他已答應了家長們，所以不論是在原地重建，或是另覓地點，昆士中學一定會建新校舍。

            上週末，波士頓華埠社區的陳毓禮，陳毓璇兄弟和三，四十名華埠社區民眾，商家，一起為馬丁華殊舉辦了一場籌款會。據估計可籌得二萬多元。

            馬丁華殊當晚在他的華埠社區聯絡員翁耀漢陪同下，出席這場籌款會。

面對著出席的支持者，馬丁華殊以輕鬆語調簡短發言，說明他當市長21個月以來，維持族裔社區，改善居民的生活品質，增建可負擔住宅，簡化證照申請，幫助企業發展，使社區成為更開放空間，都是他每天到市政府辦公的工作重點。

            他說，從1960年代起，波士頓就在不斷成長，未來十年可能增長成為有居民70萬人的城市。他當選市長時，接手了一個偉大城市，將來，他也要留給後任一個偉大的城市。

            當晚出席籌款會的人，至少三分之一是紐英崙至孝篤親公所成員，在元老陳仕維，陳家驊之外，前主席陳滋源，陳文浩，在波士頓市議會擔任議長幕僚長的現任主席陳偉民，以及經營樂嚐軒， 樂嚐軒烘培的陳文棟，陳利民等人。

            紐英崙中華公所主席阮鴻燦，在大波士頓開有五家餐廳，食肆，卡拉OK店的鄺國彬，南北和及海之味的王信武，中美鍋貼容老闆，剛盤下乞臣街銀座餐廳舊址，正裝修準備開新店的陳清，劉增棋，在波士頓經營醉瓊樓，“風”等餐廳，以及祥龍巴士公司的東海集團老闆夫人黃綺等，有不少企業經營者出席。會中並沒有人趁機會提問題，但幾乎每個人都要求拍合照。

            從1997年起，當過不下17年麻州眾議員的馬丁華殊，這晚有求必應的和所有人合照。他還很貼心的主動招手，讓喜臨門酒樓的侍應生們也和他拍張合照。           

            根據麻州政府的競選財務網站，馬丁華殊的競選戶口在他去年一月上任波士頓市長時，總額約為53,464元。一年之後的一月份，暴漲至104萬9,512元，但最新，截至9月17日時，卻只剩下28萬8,851元。在今年的二月，三月及六月，競選帳戶上顯示有41萬元，57萬元，以及62萬元的支出。

美澳居吳波上網協談O2O

(本報記者菊子劍橋市綜合報導)網路雖然是從美國發芽開花的科技，但在中國人口多，市場大，政府全力推動的走勢下，發展得超級火爆，讓許多中國人興起美國已落後，可以“科技應用反攻”的念頭。

紐英崙中華資訊網路協會（NECINA）日前就特地從中國請來“美澳居（Meiaoju）“執行長吳波，在麻省理工學院分享經驗，大談阿里巴巴的”支付寶“，騰訊的”微信支付“，中國的”滴滴打車“和美國的”優步“。

今年初才在波士頓設立的中美企業創新中心執行長楊宇，剛接任128華人科技企業家協會會長的段可等人，都趕來聽聽“他山之石可以攻錯”的經驗。

            清華大學自動系畢業，取得西密西根大學電腦碩士的吳波，在中國的互聯網，物聯網領域，是一名資深系列創業家，早從1997年就創辦了後來在香港上市的EnReach，1999年再創辦後來賣給搜狐的“焦點網（Focus Network）“，2002年接著創辦後來賣給台灣公司Sunplus的Richcore視頻解碼芯片公司，然後又創辦了中國最紅的團購公司之一，拉手網（Lashou.com），現在既創辦了時裝品牌”Macy & Larry“，也帶領著從網上到網下，為美國及澳洲市場做地產發展的美澳居。

            紐英崙中華網路資訊協會會長王振榕，會後整理出五個重點，和該會幹部分享。

            他指出，吳波在會中分享了從網上到網下（online-to-offline)，這新型的O2O企業模式，指出那是利用電腦計算來幫助市場服務在有需要時，做實時決定的新作法。利用了機器學習，人工智慧，大數據等等元素，來分享企業需求，進而整合企業模式的設計。

            吳波表示，在“從網上到網下”的這一企業領域，中國是個領導者，原因包括企業家都工作得很勤奮，很多消費者有很多要求，人工低等等。

            吳波認為，由於世界走向全球化，分享企業模式的受眾，也將以全球為對象，在美國發展O2O企業，把中國這O2O模式搬到美國來的機會應該有很多。

            由於這一領域需要大量深度學習人才，吳波歡迎大波士頓地區有意跨入這一領域者，和他聯絡。

            當日的會議主持人吳凡，是伯靈頓市場軟件和數據分析公司The Allant Group的資深工程主任。他也“聽君一席話，勝讀十年書”般地表示，聽吳波暢論中國，美國的O2O，對整個科技市場都有了不同的看法，也更明白了讓機器模擬人腦神經系統式的深度學習，可以幫助O2O公司發展出更多個性化服務，對公司及產品發展有多重要。

麻州無人認領財物 增54,000宗

麻州無人認領的財物，又增54,000筆，價值數百萬元以上。估計麻州人10中有1的不知道自己有財物流失在外。

麻州財政廳廳長高柏珂科（Deb Goldberg ）日前公佈最新資料，並說明該辦公室目前持有將近20億元的財物無人認領，呼籲民眾和該辦公室聯絡。

這些無人認領的財物包括人們已經遺忘了的儲蓄或支票戶口，沒有兌現的支票，保險收益，股票，分紅，以及放在沒人管的保險箱裏的財物。

大部份的戶口，都是在三年無動靜後，被銀行等認為是已遭遺棄戶口，移交了給麻州財政廳。去年，財政廳共還了一億一千三百萬元給財物所有人，也使得麻州成為全美還錢於民人均數最高的一周。

            麻州新公佈了一批未認領財物價值一百元以上的個人及企業名單。高柏珂鼓勵州民上網（www.findmassmoney.com），仔細檢查該一名單，看看有沒自己的名字，或打電話到 888-344-MASS (6277)。

            該一名單早前已登在波士頓環球報上，9月20日將在波士頓前鋒報上再登一次，然後在30多個區域及地方報紙上刊登。

            麻州財政廳每六個月公布一次無人認領財物。民眾可認領財物的次數，並沒有限制，在許多情況下，認領者還可拿到利息。
