Governor Healey Warns of Dangerous Rip Currents Expected at Coastal Beaches from Hurricane Erin
BOSTON – The Healey-Driscoll Administration is warning the public of dangerous rip currents along the Massachusetts coastline due to weather patterns caused by Hurricane Erin. The National Weather Service has issued a forecast warning of rip currents that have the capacity to pull swimmers away from the shore and into deep water.
“I want to urge everyone on our coasts to stay safe and alert as we expect to experience some effects of the storm passing offshore,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Rip currents and high surfs are a serious threat to swimmers. Please be careful while the storm passes through our region and keep an eye out for neighbors who might need assistance.”
Many of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)’s beaches are within the “High Risk” area of the National Weather Service’s surf zone forecast. High surf advisories are currently in effect through Friday, August 22, 2025, and could extend into the weekend. Double red flags indicate that a beach has been closed to swimming for safety. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is urging shore-based anglers to be vigilant of high surf conditions that can make areas unsafe for fishing. Mariners should also review marine forecasts and National Weather Service advisories for the Boston area before getting underway.
The National Weather Service Boston/Norton office has also issued advisories for hazardous marine conditions on coastal waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday and a Gale Watch will be in effect Thursday morning through late Friday night. Boaters should consider altering plans to avoid reduced visibility and potentially damaging winds.
This warning remains in place until Hurricane Erin weather patterns subside. For the latest weather advisories, visit weather.gov/box and follow @NWSBoston on social media.
