Massachusetts jobs down 5,300 in August
Losses impacted by temporary job disruptions


BOSTON, MA – September 18, 2014 – The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) today reported that preliminary estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show Massachusetts lost 5,300 jobs in August. Job losses were impacted by temporary employment disruptions in the retail trade sector. Jobs are estimated at 3,415,200.  The August total unemployment rate was up 0.2 of a percentage point to 5.8 percent from the July rate. The rate is 0.3 of a percentage point below the 6.1 percent national unemployment rate.

Since August 2013, Massachusetts has added a net of 54,300 jobs; with 53,500 jobs added in the private sector.  The total unemployment rate for the year is down 1.4 percent from the August 2013 rate of 7.2 percent.
BLS also revised its July job estimates to a 12,200 job gain from the 13,800 gain previously reported for the month.


August 2014 Employment Overview

Education and Health Services gained 1,600 (+0.2%) jobs over the month. Over the year, Education and Health Services gained 24,400 (+3.3%) jobs. 

Leisure and Hospitality added 1,600 (+0.5%) jobs over the month. Over the year, Leisure and Hospitality gained 5,300 (+1.6%) jobs.

Professional, Scientific and Business Services gained 1,100 (+0.2%) jobs over the month. Over the year, Professional, Scientific and Business Services added 13,000 (+2.6%) jobs.

Information gained 800 (+0.9%) jobs over the month. Over the year, Information added 5,200 (+6.1%) jobs.

Financial Activities gained 100 (0.0%) jobs over the month. Over the year, Financial Activities added 1,900 (+0.9%) jobs.

Other Services had no change in its jobs level over the month. Over the year, Other Services jobs are up 3,000 (+2.4%) jobs.

Trade, Transportation and Utilities lost 10,600 (-1.9%) jobs over the month.  Retail Trade was impacted by temporary employment disruptions.  Over the year, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities gained 1,100 (+0.2%) jobs.

Construction lost 700 (-0.6%) jobs over the month.  Over the year, Construction has added 200 (+0.2%) jobs.

Manufacturing lost 700 (-0.3%) jobs over the month.  Over the year, Manufacturing lost 600 (-0.2%) jobs.

Government added 1,500 (+0.3%) jobs over the month.  Over the year, Government gained 800 (+0.2%) jobs.

Labor Force Overview

The August 2014 estimates show 3,313,200 Massachusetts residents were employed and 203,800 were unemployed, for a total labor force of 3,517,000. The August labor force increased by 5,800 from 3,511,200 in July, as 2,300 fewer residents were employed and 8,100 more residents were unemployed over the month. The labor force was an estimated 31,000 above the 3,486,000 August 2013 estimate, with 79,200 more residents employed and 48,300 fewer residents unemployed.  

The unemployment rate is based on a monthly sample of households. The job estimates are derived from a monthly sample survey of employers.  As a result, the two statistics may exhibit different monthly trends.
