              Sean Martin

BOSTON - Friday, June 7, 2024 - Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department today announced a partnership with Roundhead Brewing Company and Fresh Food Generation to bring Alianza, a first-of-its-kind traveling beer garden series, to seven of Boston’s parks throughout the summer with food and beverages for all ages. The first activation will launch in South Boston at A Street Park on June 19.

“Our parks and open spaces create opportunities to build community across generations,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “That’s why I’m so thrilled for our traveling beer garden to make stops across the city to activate our parks in new ways this summer by bringing people together in partnership with Roundhead Brewing Company and Fresh Food Generation.”

“We can’t wait to activate our parks with this exciting partnership,” said Parks Commissioner Ryan Woods. “Alianza presented by Roundhead and Fresh Food Generation is a unique opportunity for residents to enjoy great local beer, delicious food, and the beauty of their neighborhood parks.”

In January, the City issued a Request For Proposals for a seasonal mobile outdoor hospitality opportunity with alcohol service. Fresh Food Generation is a woman-owned, Black-owned, small business located in Dorchester. They will offer a menu of Latin-influenced brews, paired with Caribbean and Modern American food.

Alianza (Alliance), the name for this beer garden series, speaks to the local business partnership, and invites attendees to travel and build community across neighborhoods. At each location, Alianza will operate from Wednesday to Sunday during the hours of 2:00 - 9:00 p.m for two consecutive weeks before traveling to the next City of Boston park.

“Roundhead is excited to bring people together across Boston’s neighborhoods,” said Luis Espinoza, co-owner of Roundhead Brewing Company. “I am very proud to combine our cultures, and be a part of something that can only happen here in Boston.”

“Every two weeks, not only will the location change, but we will be featuring a new menu item in honor of each neighborhood,” said Cassandria Campbell, CEO of Fresh Food Generation, a Boston native. “We’re excited to take our restaurant services on the road and create experiences in neighborhood parks as another place for people to connect.”

Healey-Driscoll Administration Awards $9 Million in Community Compact Grants to Municipalities and School Districts

Forty-three grants awarded through the Municipal Fiber grant program

BOSTON The Healey-Driscoll administration today announced $9 million in grants through the Community Compact Municipal Fiber grant program, more than double the amount awarded in the previous cycle. These grants will benefit 53 municipalities and school districts across Massachusetts, including multiple rural communities, to support the construction or completion of their municipal fiber networks.

These grants will help close critical gaps that exist in municipal networks.

“Connectivity and technology are critical for local governments to deliver the types of services our constituents expect. Our ability to grow this program and provide necessary investment for our cities and towns across Massachusetts demonstrates our commitment to partnering with communities to improve their IT infrastructure,” Governor Maura Healey said.

“I know firsthand the importance of building out municipal IT infrastructure and the challenge it can represent for municipalities with limited resources initiatives. That’s why this program is such an important part of how our administration is working to support our cities and towns,” Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll said. “I want to congratulate the award winners and thank all those involved for their continued commitment to their communities.”

The Municipal Fiber Grant Program offers competitive grants to support the closing of critical gaps that exist in municipal networks. Awards are focused on connecting municipality-owned facilities and assisting municipalities in achieving critical goals associated with municipal fiber networks, including protection from the growing risk of cyber security exploits targeting local government, the expansion of remote work and meeting the expectations of constituents who enjoy the convenience of interacting with government online.

These grants can be particularly helpful to smaller and more rural communities that lack the resources and infrastructure to meet their information technology needs.

“The grants announced today will empower communities to maximize technology to make local government more efficient and cost effective,” Administration and Finance Secretary Matthew J. Gorzkowicz said. “We are pleased to be able to double our investment in this space and support the cities, towns and school districts working to make these important upgrades that may otherwise be unaffordable.”

“The Municipal Fiber Grant continues to be a remarkable success in Massachusetts. As I meet with municipal IT leaders, I frequently hear from local officials who have benefited from the program. Connecting municipal assets on a fiber network allows for a centralized management of IT infrastructure, which in turns allows for enhanced management of cybersecurity,” Technology Services and Security Secretary Jason Snyder said. “The Municipal Fiber Grant Program has provided tangible benefits to our communities and is moving Massachusetts forward by making our cities and towns more resilient.”

With the expansion of the Municipal Fiber grant program in FY24 from $4 million to $9 million, the Healey-Driscoll administration was able to provide funding to nearly all communities that submitted applications. In total, $26.2 million has been awarded since Fiscal Year 2022. These are competitive grants of amounts up to $250,000, or $500,000 if multijurisdictional.

Examples of the grants include the following:

  • Acushnet - $230,000 to connect various municipal facilities to the existing municipal fiber network
  • Medford - $191,470 to help create a city-owned municipal fiber network
  • Yarmouth - $236,151 to replace the towns outdated and failing iNet infrastructure
  • Southbridge - $250,000 to create a town-owned municipal fiber network
  • Lawrence - $250,000 to expand the city’s fiber optic infrastructure
  • Easthampton - $250,000 to extend the municipal fiber optic network to include all city water wells and tanks
  • Dover - $202,168 to connect three existing radio sites with fiber cable
  • Grafton - $27,000 to install Wifi hotspots in four public parks connected to the municipal fiber optic network

ALEXANDRA VALDEZ

MAYOR MICHELLE WU APPOINTS ALEXANDRA VALDEZ AS

DIRECTOR OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS FOR THE CITY OF BOSTON

Cultural Affairs Office created by restructuring existing City Hall departments to better serve and support Boston’s cultural communities

BOSTON - Friday, June 7, 2024 - Mayor Michelle Wu today announced that Alexandra Valdez will serve as the Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs for the City of Boston. In this role, Valdez will lead the Office of Culture Affairs, a team composed of Cultural Advisors who will engage and partner with communities across Boston to shape the cultural landscape of Boston. The office resides within the City’s Equity & Inclusion Cabinet. This office was created following a restructuring of existing City departments after Mayor Wu signed a 2023 City Ordinance, sponsored by City Councilor Julia Mejia and co-sponsored by Councilors Brian Worrell and Tania Fernandes Anderson, establishing an Office of Cultural Affairs. Mayor Wu made this announcement during the City’s Caribbean Heritage Month celebration and flag raising at Boston City Hall.

“Alexandra’s service and leadership in our city has already made a huge impact across so many City departments and so many communities in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “Ensuring all of Boston’s communities are connected to city services and resources is critical in making Boston the best city for families. I look forward to Alexandra’s leadership in supporting our diverse communities across our city’s neighborhoods.”

The formation of the office is marked by moving the cultural community liaison role from the Office of Neighborhood Services (ONS) to the Office of Cultural Affairs. The cultural advisors will continue to work closely with ONS neighborhood liaisons to better connect cultural communities with City Hall, ensure cultural organizations efforts to build community and foster civic engagement are supported and will facilitate the delivery of services in collaboration with City departments.

"We're making sure every Bostonian, regardless of cultural identity, feels at home in our City,” said Mariangely Solis Cervera, Chief of Equity & Inclusion. “I’m looking forward to this team’s work and there is no one better than Alexandra Valdez to lead this charge. Welcome to the team, Alex!"

"We are thrilled to witness the Office of Cultural Affairs come to fruition, led by Alexandra Valdez as the Director,” said City Councilor Julia Mejia. “With her visionary leadership and strategic planning, we are confident that the office will successfully craft policies, protocols, and programs to elevate the social, emotional, and financial prosperity of our vibrant and diverse communities.”

"The new Cultural Affairs Office ensures that every cultural community that wants one has a larger voice in city government," said City Councilor Brian Worrell. "I'm confident that Alexandra has the experience and skills to shape this new office in a way that will empower our city's diverse population."

Valdez brings over a decade of leadership and management experience, most recently as the Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement. She has a proven track record of building respectful and trusting relationships across diverse stakeholders, ensuring that all voices are amplified, heard and valued.

"I am honored to serve as the Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Boston," said Alexandra Valdez. "I am passionate about creating inclusive spaces where every resident feels a sense of belonging, and I look forward to working collaboratively with our communities to make Boston a vibrant and culturally rich city for all."

Valdez and the Cultural Affairs team will also partner with community leaders and cultural organizations to curate events and initiatives that celebrate Boston's cultural diversity. Valdez will also be responsible for developing and implementing culturally competent programming, spearheading policy initiatives to support diverse cultural communities, and fostering a sense of belonging among residents.

The Cultural Affairs team currently consists of four cultural advisors: a Cape Verdean Cultural Advisor, Haitian Community Advisor, Latinx Community Advisor and a Vietnamese Cultural Liaison. The City is also excited to announce that it will search for a Caribbean community liaison in the near future.

As one of its first initiatives, the Office of Cultural Affairs launched the Cultural Affairs Community Building Mini-Grant Program. These grants, ranging from $500 to $5,000, aim to invest in the cultural sector by supporting non-profit organizations, particularly allowing them to build community and civic engagement across traditionally underserved groups. The deadline to apply for this mini-grant program is Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

Grant funding must be used for community building activities such as:

  • Providing culturally relevant services and trainings to traditionally underserved groups.
  • Organizing community workshops and events to foster engagement and provide valuable resources.
  • Establishing support groups to meet specific needs within the community.
  • Celebrating cultural gatherings to promote understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.
  • Facilitating community outreach and advocacy initiatives.
  • Creating community centers and gathering spaces for social connections and resources.
  • Offering training programs and leadership development opportunities.
  • Developing programs to foster intergenerational connections.
  • Promoting volunteerism and civic engagement to build a sense of ownership and solidarity.

Eligible cultural organizations must demonstrate a clear vision for a creative, equitable, and just city. Priority will be given to organizations serving historically excluded cultural communities in Boston. For more information on how to apply, please visit the Office of Cultural Affairs’ website.

              Joe Spaulding
