DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In 1912, during a period of internal and external conflicts, the Republic of China was established, giving rise to the local military forces throughout the country. After assuming control of the local governments, militants expand into the social and economic sphere.

Tianjin, the then-mecca of martial arts, also could not escape military’s encroachment. With the military taking over the martial arts schools, the style of the martial arts evolved into one of training soldiers and armies.

The Final Master captures the ethos of this era, delineating the conflicts between individual vs. collective, and new vs. traditional values. In this tragic era, does one go with or against the flow? This is the internal struggle the protagonist in the film faces.

The protagonist in the film is a martial artist from the South attempting to promulgate his arts in the North. Southern martial arts style is very clean, simple and individualistic, which contrasts strongly with the style of the North. The Northern martial arts style is heavily influenced by being the political center for hundreds of years, full of ritualistic and stately moves.

The knife artistry in each region specifically symbolizes different ideologies.
The North is one of political consciousness with the South being one of individual will.
To fully illustrate this contrast, the film’s action sequences are specifically choreographed with knives. Both the South and the North knife artistry involve intricate footwork and steps. As such, rather than following the common Hong Kong action films style of quick edits and flashy dance-like moves, The Final Master is filmed with long, full-body shots.

In the end, we see the Southern martial arts prevails, that the individual will is able to go against and break through the political consciousness.

In 2007, Xu follows up with martial arts fantasy Monk Comes Down the Mountain in 2007, which became a best-seller.

Massachusetts Life Sciences Center announces $1.5 million in Accelerator loans

Massachusetts Life Sciences Center announces $1.5 million in
Accelerator loans for promising early-stage companies

Waltham, MA –  The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) announced today the awarding of $1.5 million in Accelerator loan financing to two promising early-stage companies, Lexington-based MX Orthopedics Corp, and Bedford-based First Light Biosciences Inc.

Launched in 2009, the Accelerator program offers loans of up to $750,000 per company and seeks to “de-risk” start-up companies that are in need of financing to serve as flexible working capital or for the purchase of capital assets. The program provides support to companies at a critical stage of their development cycle, enabling them to conduct vital research and proof of concept studies, and attract subsequent investment while improving the odds of bringing cutting-edge innovation to the marketplace and to patients.  For more information about the Accelerator program, click here (add hyperlink to web site).

“Investments in new companies have put us at the forefront of the life sciences ecosystem, and our unique Accelerator program continues to support innovative early-stage start-ups and attract new talent and jobs to Massachusetts," said Governor Charlie Baker.

Including the two newly announced awards, to date the Accelerator Loan Program has funded or committed to fund $23.1 million in loans to 33 companies.  The MLSC’s Accelerator companies have generated more than $200 million in additional equity or acquisition proceeds.  Eight of these companies -- Good Start Genetics, InVivo Therapeutics, 4s3 Bioscience, Pluromed, MoMelan, Avaxia Biologics, Sample 6, and AesRx -- paid back their Accelerator loans prior to maturity with interest after being acquired or undergoing a successful round of private fundraising.

The new companies that have been authorized to receive Accelerator loans, pending additional due diligence by MLSC staff, are:

MX Orthopedics Corp., Lexington - $750,000
  • MX Orthopedics Corp. is a medical device company focused on the development and commercialization of innovative and effective orthopedic devices such as compression staples, screws, plates and intramedullary implants, made from the shape memory alloy Nitinol.
  • Their dynaMX line of fraction fixation implants is designed to address a problem with existing fracture fixation devices; using Nitinol’s properties, these devices will be able to generate and maintain greater compression across the fracture site.
  • Funding from the MLSC will help MX Orthopedics move towards commercialization.  MLSC funds will accelerate the filling of key positions to scale up the launch efforts.  Funds will also enable the purchasing of inventory for their potential OEM distribution partner.

First Light Biosciences Inc., Bedford - $750,000
  • First Light is commercializing products for rapidly detecting and treating deadly hospital infections.
  • The company’s technology focuses on delivering affordable rapid tests to detect multiple types of hospital infections, including C-difficile, MERSA and urinary tract infections and identify the infectious agent causing them.
  • Their technology enables not only the identification of the pathogen, but also the identification of the optimal antibiotic to treat the patient. They intend to deliver this product at a cost similar to culturing.
  • First Light’s MultiPath platform is an automated bench top analyzer that expects to be able to accommodate a menu of application-specific cartridges.
  • A loan from the MLSC will help First Light Biosciences accelerate the commercialization of their initial consumable diagnostic testing product, and hire and support 3 assay development scientists to accomplish that objective and push forward to achieve FDA approval.

Applications are subjected to a rigorous peer review process, followed by an evaluation by the MLSC’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB).  Applicants were then further screened by the MLSC’s Investment Sub-Committee of the Board of Directors, through a process that included a live presentation by finalists. Final awards were determined by the MLSC’s Board of Directors.

“Major global life sciences companies are locating in Massachusetts in part because they can find here a growing community of innovative early-stage companies that they can invest in, acquire, partner with or license technologies from,” said Travis McCready, President & CEO of the MLSC.  “The Accelerator Program continues to play an important role in supporting the vibrancy of our early-stage company sector, and we are pleased to be adding these two promising young companies to our portfolio.”

"MX Orthopedics is extremely grateful to have been awarded the MLSC Accelerator Loan,” said Matthew Forte, Founder and President of MX Orthopedics.  “This is an exciting time for MXO as the company moves from our engineering to our commercialization phase.  MLSC Accelerator Loan proceeds will allow our company to execute our critical hiring and inventory purchasing needs. We are truly appreciative for the MLSC and the tremendous support the organization provides to the Massachusetts life sciences cluster."

“After being awarded the MLSC Accelerator Loan, we raised 16 times that amount in private capital, enabling Myomo to become the leading provider of exoskeletons for upper extremity paralysis,” said Paul Gudonis, CEO of Myomo, a company that received $750,000 in Accelerator loan financing in 2011.  “In addition to creating jobs here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we've assisted hundreds of patients, including veterans paralyzed in combat, to restore function in their affected arms, live more independently, and in some cases, return to work.”

City of Boston will train employee on Cyber Security

CITY OF BOSTON LAUNCHES CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS AND TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ALL CITY EMPLOYEES
BOSTON - Thursday, May 26, 2016 - The City of Boston's Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) today announced its Cyber Security Awareness and Training program for all City employees. The new program cements Boston's commitment to information security across the City.

"My Administration is focused on using data and technology to improve government operations and quality of life for residents," said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "Investments in cybersecurity are an important part of our strategy to have a government that is both tech-savvy and secure against digital threats."

This program is designed to equip employees with the skills they need to keep Boston's IT systems safe and secure and protect sensitive information in their custody. In addition, the program will teach employees how to protect their personal information online and stay safe when they use the internet outside of work.

"People are the first line of defense against cybersecurity threats," said Jascha Franklin-Hodge, Chief Information Officer of the City of Boston. "Bad password management, unsafe email practices, and unauthorized information sharing can all open the door to an attacker. This program will train Boston's employees with the skills to safely navigate online threats and keep the City and themselves safe."

The self-paced, online training will be accessible  from a computer or mobile device. DoIT will provide support to employees and will track completion. Employees will be required to complete training to maintain full access to City IT systems.

Employees will be expected to complete the Cyber Security Awareness and Training program by July 1st.

MAYOR WALSH PRESENTS AWARDS FOR NORTHERN AVE BRIDGE IDEAS COMPETITION

MAYOR WALSH PRESENTS AWARDS FOR NORTHERN AVE BRIDGE IDEAS COMPETITION
Sets the stage for City to issue design RFP
BOSTON - Thursday, May 26, 2016 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh joined Tamara Roy AIA, 2016 President of the Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA), and close to 200 guests at a reception last night at BSA Space to celebrate the winners of the Northern Avenue Bridge Ideas Competition. Launched in March as a partnership between the City of Boston and the BSA, the competition spurred a robust public conversation that inspired a host of innovative ideas for the future of the bridge based on three key themes: improving mobility, honoring history, and creating destination.

"By opening this competition up to the public, we heard from architects, designers, historians and members of our community who took an interest in what the future of the Northern Ave Bridge should look like," said Mayor Walsh. "The ideas and conversation that we sparked during the process are tremendously valuable as we take the next step to design a new bridge, and I thank all who participated."

The  exchange of ideas generated 133 submissions, including 99 graphic designs and 34 essays. The call for written entries was intended to encourage broad participation in the competition, beyond those who have design expertise. A sixteen-member jury was assembled by the City and the BSA to judge the entries. Representing a diverse set of talents and interests - from architects and designers, to artists, preservationists, transportation advocates, and planners - the panel took on the tough but exciting task of selecting the award winning ideas.

"Because of the inclusive public visioning process, the jury was given an opportunity to evaluate an incredibly broad range of proposals," said Tamara Roy AIA. "The results, together with a commitment to design excellence, will point the way forward in bringing this corner of the city to life and will ultimately give Boston the Northern Avenue Bridge it deserves."

A total of $15,000 in prize money was awarded to the eight most compelling submissions that best addressed the competition themes in the eyes of the jury.

The Jury selected the following winners for graphic design submissions: "Northern Avenue Botanical Bridge," "Island in the Stream," "Northern Avenue Bridge Park," and "+(Plus) Bridge." In the essay category, the jury selected "The Northern Ave Bridge is Boston" and "A City in Motion, Pauses" as the winners.

Honorable mentions were awarded to "Steampunk Gateway: Reimagining Boston's Maritime History and "Channel Mall Station," both of which were graphic design submissions.

The People's Choice Award, based on the submission that received the most online votes on the competition website, went to "Pivot Point Bridge ."

"As we look to create a thriving and efficient transportation network in Boston, the ideas competition provided us with several guiding principles to consider," said Chris Osgood, the City's first Chief of Streets, who joined Mayor Walsh to preside over last night's ceremony and offered his perspective on how the competition would help inform the design of the new Northern Avenue Bridge. "First, it's clear that we need to think about a multimodal bridge that would welcome pedestrians, cars, and cyclists. A successful design would also create a unique destination, not just a bridge, that improves connectivity between the Seaport and the Greenway."

The Public Works Department is currently drafting a request for proposals for the design of the future bridge that it hopes to release in the coming months.
The Northern Avenue Bridge, which opened in 1908 and closed in December 2014 due to concerns about its structural integrity, is a steel three-span, triple-barreled, Pratt-type through-truss bridge. During its lifetime, the bridge carried automobiles, pedestrians, cyclists, and even train traffic for the Union Railway for over 50 years.
