路康樂新書描繪十九世紀中國幼童留學美國

紐英崙華人歷史協會和薩福克大學羅森伯格東亞研究所合作，廿七日晚在現代劇院，藉著路康樂教授(Edward Rhoads)的講談「幼童出洋肄業」，回顧第一批留學美國華人的歷史。

2003年從德州奧斯汀(Austin)大學榮譽退休的中國歷史教授路康樂(Edward Rhoads)，今年三月出版了新書「走向世界：1872-81年在美國的中國幼童(The Chinese Educational Mission to the United States, 1872-81)」。

紐英崙華人歷史協會副會長杜榮佳其後在一會議中遇見路康樂，找薩福克大學羅森伯格東亞研究所主任薛龍(Ron Suleski)合作，促成了廿七日晚這場，在薩福克(Suffolk)大學現代劇院(The Modern Theatre)，以「幼童出洋肄業」為主題的講座，也藉以誌記辛亥百年來，中美關係的演變。

            路康樂教授的新書，記錄了1872-81年間，中國教育團(Chinese Education Commission)送來美國進修，年紀不過十二、三歲的這批學生，在企圖融入美國社會時，為保留自己的文化、傳統、價值觀，甚至信仰的掙扎。1881年清廷突然把他們全都召回中國時，還在這些學生間，引發一場到底要不要回去的爭辯。

            路康樂教授為撰寫這本書所做的調查研究之深入、仔細，在該書於今年三月出版後，包括曾任倫敦泰晤士報(The Times)東亞編輯的梅兆贊(Jonathan Mirsky)，有許多好評。

            廿七日晚，路康樂教授先憶述了他會開始查找誰是最早來到美國的華人，緣於1967年，他在德州奧斯汀大學教書，一名當地少見的非洲裔學生，不但對中國有興趣，還姓Yeep。

他好奇追查才知道，原來這學生的祖父是華人。當他再進一步追蹤，又發現Yeep姓學生不是個案，當年有不少華人聚居德州。他後來發表了篇文章，指出1869年時，已有為數不少的華人在當地居住了廿年以上。華裔總人口甚至達到將近六萬人之多。

            他的研究，後來又把他帶到追查定居東岸華人的狀態，包括1870年有一群人在鞋廠工作，有人在新澤西州的商業蒸汽洗衣店工作。

            路康樂教授指出，根據這些追蹤調查，當年共有三種華人在美國境內，打工的，經商的，以及學生。他的新書，嘗試根據歷史數據，比較這些不同族群華人的在美生活經驗。包括比較當年的日本留華學生和中國留華學生的使命。日本學生學習西方文明，為改造日本。中國留學生卻是要學習科技專業，以壯大中國。當年李鴻章甚至希望送華人學生進美國的西點軍校、海事學院(Naval Academy Annapolis)，都遭禁止，反而是日本留學生有人獲准入讀。

            路康樂教授廿七日晚講談時，以麻州雀喜(Chelsea)市Winnisimmet街92號的1880年人口統計記錄，指出麻州早在1880年時，已有華人定居，並結婚生子。

他接著以幻燈片展示許多珍貴的歷史照片，說明中國教育團(Chinese Education Commission)，創辦於1872年，是第一位從美國大學畢業的中國留學生容閎的構想，總部設在康州哈特福(Hartford)，團長是陳蘭彬，老師是葉源濬、英文翻譯是曾來順。

獲選入團的學生，全都是十二、三歲的男孩，大都來自廣東省，抵美後兩人一組，住進接待家庭，先上私塾一、二年，趕上英文程度後，再升讀公私立高中，後來甚至有43人上了大學，其中有20人進了耶魯大學，8人進了麻省理工學院，1人進了哈佛大學。

1872年時詹天佑、潘銘鍾被分發到康州西港(West Haven) 的Luther Northrop，1874年有梁如浩、唐紹儀被分派到麻州春田市的Clarence Gardner。有「中國鐵路之父」、「中國近代工程之父」之稱的詹天佑，是1881年和歐陽庚一起從耶魯大學畢業的。

這些學生們，對紮不紮辮子，穿不穿西服頗有爭扎，在融入西方文化上，似全無障礙，1881年時，有Liang pixu參加了菲利普學校(Philips Academy)的棒球隊。1878年，有中國學生組成「東方(Orientals)」棒球隊。路康樂教授甚至還找到一份記載東方隊在1876年八月時，打贏了「北星隊(North Stars)」的新聞報導。耶魯大學的划船隊，也有鍾文耀是船員一。曹嘉祥參加的是打獵活動。

            路康樂教授也指出，根據他查到的資料，在容閎之前，已有唐俊榮等人在美國學校就讀，不過1854年從耶魯畢業的容閎，應是第一個來自中國的美國大學畢業生。

路康樂教授還出版過「滿洲及漢：1861-1928年間，晚清及民國初期的族裔關係和政治權力(Manchus and Han: Ethnic Relations and Political Power in Late Qing and Early Republican China, 1861-1928) 一書，並獲亞洲研究協會頒給Joseph Levenson獎，表揚那是描寫廿世紀中國最好的一本書。

辛亥百年論壇今日開講 帝國後的中國下週上場

大波士頓地區的誌記武昌起義，辛亥百年，正持續發熱，本週末、下週末，在哈佛大學校園內，陸續有兩場大型研討會。

十月廿九、三十兩日，是哈佛北岸學社、寰宇風致會社主辦，哈佛大學費正清中國研究中心和哈佛大學中國學生學者聯合會協辦，中道網、博源基金會贊助的「辛亥百年論壇」。會議地點在哈佛大學科學中心B、C等室，以及紀念教堂。

十一月四日及五日，是蔣經國國際學者交換基金會，哈佛燕京學社，以及哈佛費正清中國研究中心主辦的「帝國之後的中國：紀念1911」研討會。地點在哈佛費正清中心(1730 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA)的蔡氏禮堂。

北岸學社、寰宇風致會社的發言人李軼青表示，「辛亥百年論壇」邀有海內外著名的辛亥革命研究專家、歷史學者，從歷史、文化、政治及法律的角度，解讀辛亥革命，以及其前後的中國發展。

應邀出席的主講者及講題包括，柯偉林(William Kirby)談「一世紀的中華共和(A Century of Chinese Republics)」，袁偉時講「辛亥革命研究中的幾個意識形態陷阱」，楊天石談「誰領導了辛亥革命？」，楊奎松講「中國革命的國際背景」，羅志田講「具有劃時代意義的清朝最後十年」。

會中並將座談討論「辛亥與中國革命」、「辛亥與中國社會」、「換個角度看辛亥」、「緣何走向革命」等題目。

      「帝國之後的中國：紀念1911」研討會，將於十一月四日的早上九點半起，以「見證1911─革命及展示(Witnessing 1911 – Revolution and Spectacles)」揭開序幕。

      會中將有民立報與民初新聞攝影的興起，滿漢矛盾的逆轉，「挽死與恨生：辛亥革命遺老的世俗情懷」，王德威主持的「語言改革及文化革命」，柯偉林主持的「1911-2011：台北、東京及北京觀點」、日本東京大學學者談「近世中國與辛亥革命」等等。

Aim: to publicize Chinese higher education to American high school graduates and university students and graduates.
To further attract more international students to study in China, China Scholarship Council (CSC) organizes Chinese universities to hold China Higher Education Exhibition in many countries. In 2011, CSC successfully organized Chinese Universities to hold or participate in education exhibition in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Turkey, Austria, France, Kenya and South Africa.
There is a unique reason for holding education exhibition in USA. In 2009, US President Barack Obama announced a new exchange initiatives with China, known as "A Hundred Thousand Strong Initiative".
According to this program, during the next four years, the US will encourage in total one hundred thousand American students, about 25,000 students per year for short time or degree program study in China. The exhibition will serves this purpose as well.
After over three decades of Reform and Opening up, higher education in China has made great achievements in both teaching and research, which are widely recognized by the world and has attracted more and more international students to study in China. In 2010, the total number of students studying in China exceeded 260,000. The Chinese universities presented in this Education Exhibition do have highly qualified faculty, strong research capacity, efficient management system and comfortable learning environment. Apart from these, many of their courses can be conducted in English.
We are convinced that the China Education Exhibition will provide a good chance for Americans to know more about Chinese higher education and Chinese universities.
In addition, there are various forms of scholarships available, such as the Chinese government scholarships, and scholarships from local governments and universities. Visitors can come and talk with the representatives from Chinese universities about the possibility of study and scholarships.
China Scholarship Council
The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a non-profit institution with legal person status affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China.
The objective of the CSC is responsible for providing financial assistance to the Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad and to the foreign citizens wishing to study in China in order to develop the educational, scientific and technological, and cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries, to strengthen the friendship and understanding between Chinese people and the people of all other countries, and to promote world peace and the socialist modernization drive in China.
In this year, CSC will sponsor 16000 Chinese to study abroad in around 70 countries and receive about 26000 international students and scholars from over 180countries to pursue study in China. Various programs are open to international students and scholars, including bachelor programs, master programs, Ph.D. programs, in addition to general scholar, senior scholar programs as well as Chinese language programs.
In order to expand international fame, CSC organizes Education Exhibition abroad to promote Chinese higher education and Chinese higher education institutions for attracting international students or scholars to study and do research in China.
