Medical Tents & Emergency Care
Boston EMS Captain Jose Archila (#328) crossed the finish line alongside Beth and Michael Bourgault at the 2014 Marathon Tribute run. Jose applied a tourniquet and wound care, as well as comfort, to Beth on April 15, 2013, and ultimately helped save her life. The two were reunited at a finish line photoshoot on April 8, 2014. Read their full story.

Signing the Streets
Joe is one of the sign shop employees who make and put up over 2,200 no-parking signs along the route. The team also helps rope off the route; puts up electronic message boards; and manages a fleet of 88 golf carts used by first responders like the Boston Police.
Photographing the Finish Line
Jeremiah is one of three photographers who travels around the city capturing photos of the Mayor making speeches, meeting students, andmaking friends. This will be his third time photographing the Boston Marathon - follow us on Instagram to see his photos from this year's finish line.

Cleaning Up the Route
Public Works employees are first on the route and the last ones off, working non-stop to make streets and sidewalks clean and safe. They fill potholes, repair sidewalks, move trash bins, and loudly cheer on the last leg of runners as they sweep up cups and other trash from the route.

MAYOR WALSH RELEASES FIRST EVER WORKFORCE REPORT EXAMINING DIVERSITY THROUGHOUT CITY GOVERNMENT 

BOSTON - Tuesday, April 14, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today released the City of Boston's first ever Workforce Profile Report to transparently examine the racial and gender makeup of Boston’s municipal employee base. The report was led by Shaun Blugh, the City's first-ever Chief Diversity Officer and Deputy Chief Diversity Officer, Freda Brasfield.  


The report analyzes annual pay rate disparities at the Cabinet, Department Head, and throughout each department, and highlights current initiatives and outlines recommendations for the Walsh Administration to establish a road map for further diversification of the Boston workforce. The findings of this report will play a role in succession planning as City Hall prepares for the upcoming transition of an aging workforce.
"This report represents a blueprint of where we are in city government when it comes to race and diversity of our workforce," Mayor Walsh said. "We were able to take a in-depth look at each department to see where we can improve and specifically what we need to do to reach our goals. It is our priority to not only improve the numbers but to create a strong pipeline that will ensure we are finding the best talent and cultivating that talent for positions throughout City Hall."
Mayor Walsh appointed Shaun Blugh the City's first-ever Chief Diversity Officer in December to provide strategic leadership in implementing Mayor Walsh's diversity agenda.
"We know we have work to do, but this Workforce Profile Report is an important step in reviewing the City of Boston's current workforce composition and being transparent to our constituents on these significant issues," Chief Blugh said.  
The data for the report highlights the progress Mayor Walsh has implemented across City leadership level, appointing the most diverse cabinet in Boston history, while while highlighting that areas of improvement are necessary. 

The report examines full-time and regular part-time employees of the city government. The findings of this report will be used to analyze which departments are currently making those strides and which departments have the greatest opportunity in the coming years to better reflect the demographics of the city of Boston and allow for a more engaged workforce motivated by the potential for development and career advancement.

Since taking office, Mayor Walsh has actively recruited across the City and nation to bring in highly-skilled diverse talent to fill his Cabinet. However, in order to sustain true systemic change, the report emphasizes the need to examine how the City recruits, develops, and retains talent throughout all departments. This includes proactively developing internal pipelines of talent for leadership positions and preparing current employee base with the skills and opportunities for further professional development in order to retain more diverse talent in the overall workforce.  

The report highlights how diversity and inclusion initiatives are more than just about the racial and gender breakdown of the city workforce, but creating an environment in city government whereby each employee feels respected, valued and appreciated for their own individuality and diverse viewpoints. 

The Mayor’s Office of Diversity is working with management across departments to foster a workplace culture that celebrates the individuality and diversity of thought of each employee in the city government workforce. 

Wage inequality based on ethnicity, race, gender or any other factors is also examined in this report. As an organization, it is essential that all employees feel that they are paid equal wages for equal work. The report examines all departments of city government to determine where the most significant gaps are currently in regards to racial and gender inequity.
The report outlined the following recommendations:

  1. Unrolling an employee engagement survey to better assess the current employee base’s views on opportunities for advancement at City Hall;
  2. Ability to ask municipal employees to self-identify their ethnic/racial background through the City's current upgrade of the HR database;
  3. Working with professional organizations to aid recruiting efforts for current positions;
  4. Continue to look at ways to improve policies for the well-being of our employees and the city of Boston, similar to the recent paid parental leave program;
  5. Increase diversity training throughout city departments; 
  6. Continue to engage external stakeholders with the City through the Diversity Task Force; and,
  7. Utilize and build additional employee resource groups to provide advice on how to work and succeed professionally at City Hall.

The Mayor’s Office of Diversity is responsible for leading Mayor Walsh's diversity agenda, including the ongoing development and delivery of the City’s diversity goals and objectives in areas of hiring, leadership and career development, diversity training, strategic planning, recruitment and retention. The Mayor’s Office of Diversity is tasked with analyzing and improving the City’s procurement strategies, to support and increase opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses to engage directly with the City of Boston. The Chief Diversity Officer and Deputy Chief Diversity Officer will continue to perform outreach to community, academic, and business organizations in order to increase diversity of employee candidate pools, and assist in the development of hiring processes to ensure maximum opportunities for employment and career advancement for candidates from underrepresented demographic groups.

MAYOR WALSH APPOINTS GISELLE STERLING COMMISSIONER OF VETERANS' SERVICES

BOSTON - April 14, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the appointment of Giselle Sterling as Commissioner of Veterans’ Services for the City of Boston. She  will be the first Latina and first woman to hold this position. Sterling has served as interim Commissioner for the department since January 16, 2015.

"Giselle is an effective leader and I’m pleased to make permanent her appointment as Veterans’ Services Commissioner," said Mayor Walsh. "Her commitment to advocacy and serving our veterans is invaluable to our community and our city, and I'm pleased she'll continue serving with us in this capacity."

"I am grateful to Mayor Walsh for this opportunity to serve Boston veterans," said Sterling. "It is my honor to work for the men and women who have worn the uniform for our country."  

Sterling joined the City of Boston as a Community Relations Specialist in March 2012. Prior to that Sterling served in the United States Marine Corps. In 2000 she completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina and was soon after trained as a Field Radio Operator with deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan; the Philippines; Guam; Diego Garcia and Okinawa, Japan. Giselle was honorably discharged in 2004 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Sterling also previously worked as a Special Event Coordinator for El Mundo Newspaper, and as a Charitable Campaign Coordinator for Action For Boston Community Development, Inc.

The first daughter to be born in the United States to Dominican parents, Sterling is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and resides in Boston’s historic North End.

            波士頓華埠居民會從1999年成立起就擔任共同主席迄今的余仕昂,梅陳月嫦,當晚在會場只做了簡要匯報,但在節目冊上,余仕昂洋洋灑灑列出十三項成就,包括爭取到永久性雙語選票,與華人前進會合作,上街遊行,爭取穩定華埠,建圖書館,抗議千禧集團少繳稅款五百多萬元,出席工作就業公聽會,參加市府圖書館、房屋問題等公聽會,舉辦馬年春宴等;梅陳月嫦指該會和麻州州長亞美諮詢委員會合作,舉辦州長候選人論壇,讓華埠民眾第一次有機會接觸到這麼多個州長候選人。她呼籲社區大眾積極出席華埠居民會每月第一個星期三晚上六點半,在昆士小學飯堂舉行的月會。
        當晚的新春慶祝會,有新上任華人前進會共同主任的陳玉珍擔任司儀,胡清白鶴派瑞獅團採青獻桔,茉莉花舞蹈團小朋友穿著色彩艷麗,喜氣十足的綢緞服裝,獻演舞蹈。

            麻州眾議員黃子安因事先離席,由麻州眾議員麥家威(Aaron Michlewitz)代表麻州議會送上表揚狀。他還給居民會帶來賽爾特人隊T恤做禮物,數量還多到每人一件,皆大歡喜。
            當晚到會的嘉賓還有波士頓市議員普斯莉(Ayana Pressley),前任大波士頓中華文化協會會長冼鳳明夫婦,代表贊助商塔芙茨大學的曾雪清等人。

            華人前進會當天在會場上隨節目冊派發宣傳單,籲請社區大眾四月十四日(週二)下午四至六點,到波士頓靠近東北大學及羅格斯(Ruggles)地鐵站的Forsyth公園集合,為爭取時薪提高的每小時十五元遊行。

昆市辦系列活動慶祝社區發展基金推出四十年

昆士市在四月六日至十日間,加入全美各地舉辦“全國社區發展週”活動,慶祝“社區發展基金(Community Development Block Grant )”推出四十週年。昆士市總共獲得八千三百萬元。
            這每年一週的慶祝活動,讓各社區展現聯邦房住局(HUD)所提供“社區發展基金”,資助了哪些項目。       
            昆士市計畫局也在這週表揚對CDBG項目有貢獻的個別人士或組織。
            昆士市頒發了“第九屆市長服務獎”給昆市前任社區發展主任Nancy Callanan,頒發2015終生成就獎表揚過去三十年來致力改善大昆市中低收入個人及家庭的Judy Farmer,還以獎狀表揚東方銀行,稱許他們是業界模範。南岸青年會也因為參與昆市政府的CDBG項目,獲得表揚。
            這一週慶祝活動的高潮,包括為德國城社區中心音樂俱樂部剪綵。昆市長柯奇(Tom Koch),聯邦經濟房住局第一區代理主任暨經濟發展專員Cedric Kam,麻州眾議員陳德基等許多人都出席了活動。
四月七日時,約有十人參加了昆市太陽能項目的“和安裝者晤面”活動。
昆市計畫局表示,昆市府的住宅重居計畫(Housing Rehabilitation Program)為收入符合規定者,提供安裝太陽能板前先整修就屋頂的財務援助。有需要者可洽項目經理Tony Losordo,617-376-1054。

MAYOR WALSH LAUNCHES "ONE BOSTON DAY" WEBSITE 

BOSTON - Monday, April 13, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today launched the "One Boston Day" website, www.onebostonday.orgdedicated to sharing how Boston and people around the world are marking April 15. 

Individuals, businesses and community organizations are encouraged to share how they are marking "One Boston Day" on social media using the hashtag #OneBostonDay to be featured on the website, which was designed and built by Hill Holliday. 

"One Boston Day will inspire all of us to come together as the community we are and share the spirit of Boston by giving back," said Mayor Walsh. "April 15 is a date that has come to stand for our city’s deepest values. I hope everyone can mark this day in a way that is appropriate and inclusive for each of our experiences." 

Mayor Walsh announced last month that April 15 will be known as "One Boston Day," a new tradition to honor the resiliency, generosity and strength of the City of Boston.  The day will be an opportunity to recognize the good in our community and reflect on the spirit of grace and resilience of the people of Boston that was exemplified in the response to the loss and the tragedies of April 15, 2013. 

"One Boston Day" will encourage random acts of kindness and spreading goodwill. The new tradition came together in compilation with the desire expressed by many survivors to pass on the kindness, generosity and support they received following the 2013 Boston Marathon. 

On the morning of April 15, the Mayor will assist in raising honorary banners on Boylston Street to honor the victims and survivors of April 15, 2013 and the days following.  The City of Boston will hold a moment of silence at 2:49 p.m. on April 15 to mark the two-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. Church bells will then ring throughout the City.   Mayor Walsh is encouraging people outside of the City, and around the world, to join Bostonians in the moment of silence.

加州参议员夏乐柏宣布将参选洛杉矶县县政委员 重视华裔选票
华裔女婿、加州参议院共和党党团领袖、参议员夏乐柏(Bob Huff)49日下午在洛杉矶县内的蒙罗维亚市召开新闻发布会,正式宣布将参选角逐洛杉矶县第五选区的县政委员(County Supervisor)。他表示,选区内拥有众多的华裔选民,他的竞选非常需要来自华裔社区的支持。
面对众多的主流媒体和华文媒体,夏乐柏在华裔太太何美湄的陪伴下,向媒体阐述了自己关于洛杉矶县行政管理的公共政策纲要,他表示将充分运用自己丰富的行政经验,创造就业、解决地区交通问题、保证供水稳定以及保护社区打击犯罪并保障学校安全。
目前,他已在推动法案,将新的制造业、娱乐业与航天业的工作机会带入洛杉矶县以求扩展经济。如果当选,他将致力招揽新的雇主至洛杉矶县开展业务,创造高薪酬的工作机会。
夏乐柏承诺将会继续努力以保证洛杉矶县提供高品质的医疗救护服务;积极努力减少路面交通堵塞,努力消除高速公路交叉口的交通瓶颈,并提升圣盖博谷、羚羊谷及圣佛南多谷等地区的公共交通运输服务。
作为州际供水债券的主要谈判者之一,夏乐柏将推动建立两个储水设施,并于圣盖博地区清理被污染的饮用水,保证洛杉矶县拥有清洁可靠的供水。
钻石吧市市议员Carol Herrera介绍了夏乐柏从20年前当选钻石吧市市议员开始到当选州众议员、州参议员的从政经历,以及在从政过程中为选区和加州所做出的成就。并特别推崇他在州议会工作期间跨党派合作解决问题的能力
洛杉矶县现有人口一千万,被划分为5个选区,每个选区有近200万居民。县政府雇员近十万人,每年掌管的公共行政预算250亿美元。现任第五选区的县政委员安东诺维奇近日宣布,将于2016年退休,目前已经有5位参选者宣布参与角逐这一职位。夏乐柏的太太、圣盖博谷林肯俱乐部主席何美湄表示,这将是一场竞争激烈的选战,而华裔选民的投票和支持,将有可能产生关键的作用。
应邀出席当天新闻发布会的蒙特利公园市前市长赵谭美生、阿罕布拉学区教委前主席黄赵企晨、美国华人公共外交促进会会长任向东表示,夏乐柏关心华人社区事务,推动并通过了许多对华人社区具有里程碑意义的法案,包括关于中文学校合法化;对排华法案的道歉案;欢庆农历新年等法案,并在近几年推动加州政府与中国的一些省、市建立了友好省州关系。他们一致呼吁华人社区支持夏乐柏参选洛杉矶县县政委员。
美国华人公共外交促进会会长任向东表示,目前正在与夏乐柏参议员以及他的办公室接触,希望在加州州议会通过一项纪念世界反法西斯胜利70 周年、抗日战争胜利70周年的相关法案。(AACYF洛杉矶讯)
