Civil Rights Leaders Join Together to Push for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
Access a recording of yesterda's press
conference HERE
WASHINGTON — As our nation prepares
to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, civil rights leaders,
joined by Rep. Terri Sewell, D. Ala., showed their support for yesterday's
reintroduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This
legislation is critical to restoring and strengthening the Voting Rights Act of
1965 and ensuring that every voter has equal access to the ballot. As the right
to vote faces unprecedented threats, it is imperative for Congress to act.
As we commemorate the legacy of John Lewis and the
sacrifices of those who marched for voting rights, participants on the call
urged Congress to take action to protect our vote. Passing the John R. Lewis
Voting Rights Advancement Act is the first step in ensuring every voice is
heard and every vote is counted.
Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said: “Voting is the foundation of our democracy. It’s how we choose our leaders, and it’s also how we fire them if they lie to us, steal from us, or just plain ignore our needs. We can shape demands and be heard when we show up. It’s the freedom that allows us to shape our future. As we face escalating attacks on our rights, on funding for our schools, on controlling the cost of prescriptions and making sure women can survive pregnancy, there are politicians who want to make it harder to vote so that it’s harder to fire them. They particularly target communities of color and low-income voters, but we have leaders who lead for all of us. We applaud Rep. Sewell and the congressional leaders who are introducing proven pro-voter solutions. We need the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act today. The John R. Lewis VRAA is a vital step in restoring the protections needed to ensure everyone has an equal voice in our democracy. As we approach the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we must honor John Lewis’s legacy by defending the power of our communities to make the decisions that shape their lives.”

Governor Healey Nominates John Stocks to Serve as Clerk Magistrate of the Springfield District Court
BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura Healey announced the nomination of John J. Stocks to serve as the Clerk Magistrate of the Springfield District Court. Attorney Stocks has worked for the Springfield District Court for over three decades and was appointed as Acting Clerk Magistrate by Chief Justice Stacey Fortes in 2023. He will now be considered by the Governor’s Council for confirmation.
“With over 30 years of experience in the Springfield District Court, Attorney Stocks is uniquely equipped to take on this role that is essential to ensuring the Court can uphold the rule of law and deliver justice,” said Governor Maura Healey. “For the last few years, Jay has been serving in an acting basis, helping to smoothly facilitate the operations of the Court, and I am excited to see him officially assume the position.”
“Jay has an unparalleled knowledge of our Springfield District Court and our civil and criminal procedures, which makes him the perfect person to serve as the Clerk Magistrate of the Springfield District Court,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “I want to thank Chief Justice Fortes for first appointing him in an acting capacity, and am excited to see his continued work for the District Court.”
Attorney Stocks has worked for the Springfield District Court since 1993. He is currently the Acting Clerk Magistrate and is responsible for managing the administration of the Clerk’s Office, as well as conducting show cause hearings, presiding over small claims trials, and reviewing applications for complaints and search warrants. He previously served as the First Assistant Clerk Magistrate and the Assistant Clerk Magistrate for the Springfield District Court. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University and a Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law.
"I would like to thank Governor Healey for her trust in nominating me to this important position,” said Attorney Stocks.” I would also like to thank my colleagues and staff who help me run the busiest District Court in the Commonwealth, and the mentors I had over the past thirty years, who had a role in molding me into the quality public servant I am today."
The Springfield District Court hears a wide range of criminal, civil, housing, mental health and other types of cases. District Court criminal jurisdiction extends to all felonies punishable by a sentence of up to five years, and many other specific felonies with greater potential penalties, all misdemeanors, and all violations of city and town ordinances and by-laws. In civil matters, the District Court hears cases in which the damages are not likely to be more than $50,000 and small claims cases up to $7,000. The District Court is located in 62 courts across the state.
Governor Healey has nominated 14 attorneys to the District Court: Heath Antonio, Frederick DeCubellis, Leo Fama, Stuart Hurowitz, Sarah Kennedy, Edward Krippendorf, Francis V. Kenneally, Courtney C. Linnehan, Hilary McCamic, Polly Phillips, Jerald Parisella, Gregory Teran, Marjorie P. Tynes and Amanda Ward.
MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF SWIM SAFE PROGRAM THROUGH GRANT OPPORTUNITY
Boston to invest $250,000 to support free swim lessons this spring and summer, with applications now open for partner organizations.
BOSTON - Thursday, March 6, 2025 - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu, the City of Boston’s Human Services Cabinet, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) announced applications are now open for the latest round of Swim Safe Boston grants to support non-profit organizations in Boston that provide free swim lessons for youth. The $250,000 in grant funding continues the City’s commitment to ensuring families have access to affordable, beginner-level swim lessons for kids. In 2024, Swim Safe provided lessons to over 6,000 youth, and since its launch under Mayor Wu in summer of 2023 has provided lessons to 8,100 kids. Swim Safe is part of Mayor Wu’s Connect, Learn, Explore: Commitment to Youth, a commitment to giving Boston youth an opportunity to explore and discover their passions. The funding to support swim instruction builds off the Mayor’s commitment to ensure all Boston youth learn to swim and can safely enjoy our City’s coastline and pools.
“Swimming is a great summertime activity in the City of Boston and a critical skill year-round. We’re continuing our commitment to affordable swimming lessons through the Swim Safe Program, ensuring that our families have the skills they need to safely enjoy our City’s pools and coastline,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “I encourage all of our aquatic partners to apply for a Swim Safe grant to continue our dedication to safe summer fun.”
Interested Swim Safe grant applicants should carefully review the application materials and fill out this application to be considered for a Swim Safe grant. The application is available through the city’s Swim Safe website: boston.gov/swim-safe. Awardees must be non-profit organizations that either operate aquatics facilities or have a partnership with an aquatics facility that is located in the City of Boston. The grant application will close at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025.
“This latest round of grant funding will help us ramp up availability of free lessons going into the summer months when demand is highest,” said Human Services Chief José F. Massó. “Through these lessons and the ones offered by BCYF we are making sure that a whole generation of youth are learning how to be safe around water.”
As a coastal city with numerous pools and natural bodies of water, Boston families have an array of opportunities to enjoy water recreation. Swim Safe is focused on removing barriers to water access and increasing safety among Boston residents. Nationally, fatal drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 years old and the second leading cause of injury death for children ages 5-14 (CDC). Black and Latino youth are less likely to know how to swim and are at higher risk of drowning (CDC).
The City of Boston is seeking to remedy this disparity by investing in swim lessons, repairing the City’s public pools, and recruiting and training lifeguards to staff the city’s pools. In summer 2024, Boston Centers for Youth & Families successfully recruited 74 seasonal lifeguards, ensuring that all city pools were able to remain open and safely operated throughout the summer. The grant program announced today will be available to organizations that operate pools in Boston and have experience offering swim lesson programming to the public.
The past fall’s grantees included the YMCA of Greater Boston and Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, among others. Other grantees included a group of Boston Public Schools, including Josiah Quincy Elementary School, the Rafael Hernandez K-8 School, and the Hurley K-8 School, all of which are offering lessons either during the school day or as part of after school programming.
“The Swim Safe Grant has allowed the Hurley School to offer free, high-quality swimming lessons to students who might not otherwise have access. Many of the swimmers in our program are new to the water and all are in the early stages of learning water safety and basic strokes,” said Emily Pierce, Executive Director of Equitable School Partnerships of Boston. “Confidence in the water should be a right not a privilege but many families struggle to find and pay for swimming lessons in the city. The Swim Safe Grant helps school-based swimming programs remove those barriers.”
“In collaboration with our dedicated aquatics partners, Boston Centers for Youth & Families is directing funding to ensure equitable access to swimming and water activities throughout the city," said Marta E. Rivera, Commissioner of Boston Centers for Youth & Families. “This partnership strengthens our ability to reach every neighborhood, providing free and inclusive aquatics programming that reflects the diversity of Boston's families.”
Mayor Wu is acting with urgency to repair and renovate several city-owned pools, many of which were built in the 1970s. Because of a collaboration between Boston Public Schools, Boston Centers for Youth & Families, the Public Facilities Department, and the Property Management Department, investments of City funding, and improved facilities assessment, the City has projects underway at a number of City pools this winter including BCYF Clougherty Pool in Charlestown, BCYF Curtis Hall Community Center Pool in Jamaica Plain, and BCYF Draper Pool in West Roxbury. This fiscal year, Mayor Wu allocated $54.5 million in the FY25-FY29 capital plan for repairing and renovating the city's pools.

Massachusetts Democratic Party Statement on Mayor Wu's
Testimony to House Oversight Committee
BOSTON - Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair
Steve Kerrigan released the following statement on Mayor Wu's testimony
Wednesday to the House Oversight Committee.
"The House Oversight Committee hearing did nothing to
fix a broken immigration system or make our communities safer. House
Republicans showed once again they have no clue how to govern responsibly in
true partnership with local officials who know their communities best. Instead,
Republicans – with the endorsement and assistance of the MA GOP –
repeatedly attacked Democratic mayors with misleading claims and false
narratives, all to please Donald Trump and to produce video clips they will use
to raise money off their extreme MAGA followers.
Instead of berating Boston’s Mayor, maybe they should have
used their time to learn how she and other Democratic leaders in Massachusetts
have made our Commonwealth and our capital city among the best and safest
places to live in the nation, setting historic lows for violence. Mayor Wu
demonstrated that Boston is leading and is an example for the nation."
