MAYOR’S OFFICE FOR IMMIGRANT ADVANCEMENT AWARDS $650,000 IN GRANTS TO 13 ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT IMMIGRANT WORKERS AND IMMIGRATION LEGAL ACCESS

BOSTON- Thursday, May 9, 2024 - Mayor Michelle Wu and the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) today announced that the City is awarding $650,000 in grants to 13 nonprofits to increase the capacity of immigrant-serving organizations to provide immigration-related legal services and support the legal needs of immigrant workers. The grants range from $10,000 to $100,000 for programs including Know Your Rights training, forms assistance, and legal consultation and representation in immigration and labor violation cases. MOIA launched the Immigrant Workers’ Rights Grant program to support immigrant workers through Know Your Rights trainings and assist in labor rights cases and immigration cases tied to labor violations. To address gaps within the current immigration legal system, MOIA launched the Immigration Legal Access grant program for initiatives aimed at improving access to immigration legal services for Boston residents. “Boston is a city of immigrants, and we all benefit from the contributions of immigrant communities in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “Our immigration system is nearly impossible to navigate alone, so I’m grateful to MOIA and these organizations for helping our immigrant residents better access legal services and much needed supports.” “Immigrants that experience labor abuses may be afraid to speak out or seek help due to their status," said Monique Tú Nguyen, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement. “By expanding the capacity within the field to respond to the demand for legal services, our goal is to ensure that immigrants understand their rights and have the resources to navigate a complex legal system.”  The 13 local organizations selected to receive funding are:   Brazilian Worker Center: Funding will support building the organization’s capacity to increase worker’s rights work and immigration services for new arrivals to the city of Boston. Center to Support Immigrant Organizing/Equity Now and Beyond: The coalition of community based organizations will provide immigration legal services at wellness clinics and other community sites. Centro Presente: The organization will support Temporary Protected Status applicants, families reuniting with unaccompanied minors, and provide legal consultation through legal clinics. Chinese Progressive Association: The grant will be used to train staff and update and improve accessibility of Know Your Rights information. Everett Haitian Community Center: The funds will be used to hold legal clinics to support new arrivals with information and immigration legal services. Gilbert Albert Community Center: The organization will host monthly legal services days. Justice at Work: Funding will support the organization building capacity to increase the services they provide to immigrant workers. Lawyers for Civils Rights: In collaboration with community-based organizations, the grant will create monthly clinics for immigrant workers.  Mabel Center for Immigrant Justice: Funding will support screening, intake, pro se assistance, and full representation in humanitarian immigration cases. Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition: The organization will provide legal assistance through a hotline available to immigrants and advocates.  Rian Immigrant Center: The grant will provide consultations, pro se assistance, and full representation to Boston residents through in-person appointments at several Boston Public Library branches.

華裔名廚Joyce Chen、香港餐廳、映利樓 紐英崙華人歷史協會帶你看

               (Boston Orange 周菊子麻州劍橋市報導) 劍橋市歷史協會和紐英崙華人歷史協會 (CHSNE)合作，為誌記亞裔傳統月，5月6日在劍橋市公共圖書館舉辦了一場「劍橋故事: 華裔美籍的廚藝先驅 (Stories of Cambridge: Chinese American Culinary Pioneers) 」座談，回顧Joyce Chen 餐廳，香港餐廳，映利 (Young Lee) 樓。

              華人在美國開餐廳，並不稀奇。像黃偉炎和黃陳美蘭創辦，在Saugus的九龍餐廳 (Kowloon)；趙羨藻創辦，在Andove的中國花 (China Blossom)餐廳，持續經營了七十多、六十多年的十分罕有。

              廖家艾的從1958年在劍橋市開張第一家Joyce Chen餐廳，把” 北京餛飩 (Peking Ravioli)”變成波士頓特有的鍋貼名稱，1962年出版”家艾食譜”，1967年成為美國電視烹飪節目第一位華裔主持人，1971年發明並持有專利的推出長柄平底炒鍋，1982年研發第一款瓶裝中國炒醬料賣進美國市場，2014年9月26日，美國郵政局發行2000萬張「名廚熱 (Celebrity Chefs Forever)」郵票系列時，把她納為5位名廚之一等豐富經歷，則讓她成為了美國中餐界的傳奇人物。

              5月6日這晚，廖家艾的小兒子陳祖昌藉著照片簡述了前述的Joyce Chen經歷。他還透露了關於” 北京餛飩” 這名稱背後，以及Joyce Chen上電視節目，腳下得墊個平台來拉撐她那只有5尺2吋身高的趣事。

              ” 北京餛飩” 其實就是餃子，或者鍋貼。在波士頓華人還不多的那個年代，最多的是義大利裔、愛爾蘭裔移民。Joyce Chen為吸引更多顧客，決定把餃子、鍋貼改稱作” 北京餛飩” 。有些談論歷史的文章稱，這名稱是當年義大利和華人移民文化融合的例證。陳祖昌指出，當初這名稱送審時，政府單位竟不讓他們用，說是這名稱必須來自一個就那麼叫的地方，否則就得聆訊，沒想到就在他們發愁時，政府單位又說，如果是叫做 “Ravioli Peking” 就沒問題。

              Joyce Chen的餃子和中餐形象，在麻州是那麼的深入人心，2012年9月，劍橋市特地在中央廣場舉辦首屆「餃子節 (Festival of Dumplings)」，慶祝廖家艾95歲生日，然後2013。2014又辦了2界。2017年9月5號，離廖家艾百歲誕辰只9天時，Carrie Clickard撰寫，Katy Wu插畫的出版了一本兒童漫畫書，「Dumpling Dreams: How Joyce Chen Brought the Dumpling from Beijing to Cambridge (餃子夢: 廖家艾如何把餃子從北京帶到劍橋市)」，描繪廖家艾的一生。陳祖昌說，他們家人沒有授權這2人去出版這樣一本書，但他們很高興看到這本書。

              這場座談，另外邀請了香港餐廳老闆之一的李伯豪 (Paul Lee)，映利樓 (Young Lee Restaurant)創辦人的外孫 鄺育民 (Richard Ning) 分享他們的故事。

              鄺育民 (Richard Ning) 也拿出幾張照片，讓人看來自台山海潮的他外祖父母，黃經俊、黃李銀就於1924年來美國後，在劍橋市第一個消防站所在地，哈佛廣場Church 街27號，從1930年代起開張的映利樓。這餐廳在1950年代賣給了另一家中國人，並一直經營到1980年代。他指出那時候的中餐館，多半售賣迎合美國人口味的中餐，炒麵、雜碎，芙蓉，蛋捲，甜酸肉，炒飯等等。他指出，有趣的是，在那個年代，這些中餐館還都一定會免費送盤法國麵包。

              李伯豪家的「香港餐廳」也是一家歷史悠久，經營迄今，餐牌上還有人們迄今仍然點用的美式中餐，雜碎，炒麵，蛋芙蓉等菜餚的中餐館。他父親是1930年代來到美國的，第二次世界大戰時參軍，回中國娶妻，成家立業，輾轉於Brighton，Waltham等市鎮，最後在1954年和另外2人合夥開餐廳，落腳劍橋市。1956年時，這2名合夥人想要把他父親的股份買下來，於是他父親和他母親商量，或許轉行經營洗衣店。由於當年的洗衣店都熱得要命，夏天時的室內溫度高過華氏一百度，風扇再大都沒用。他母親一聽就說沒門，要他父親自己去開洗衣店，她就留在家裏照顧小孩。商量後，他父親聽從了他母親的建議，向親戚朋友們借錢，反過來買下那2名合夥人的股份，自己經營起餐廳。1970年代，他們賺到足夠的錢，買下了餐廳所在地，還著意裝修，不但從中國進口屋瓦，還裝潢出雕樑畫棟，蟠龍大柱，配上百鳥朝鳳壁畫，簡直美得不可勝收，成了一九七零、八零年代華人辦婚禮的搶手場地。香港餐廳後來陸續走過增設酒吧，闢出音樂、文化、戲曲等現場表演空間，又再撤銷某些用途等的歷史變遷。如今他們還在同一地點繼續經營餐廳，一、二、三樓的空間使用，也因應時空需求做調整。

              這場座談由「十億之一 (One in a Billion)」項目創辦人陳美寶主持，「煉金術士經驗」共同創辦人Ed Rodley代表劍橋市歷史協會當司儀。

                               紐英崙華人歷史協會副會長羅元旭 (York Lo) 透露，會舉辦這樣一場講座，緣起於鄺一民 (Stephen C. Ning) 在1983年拍了一部全部在波士頓華埠取景的影片「Freckled Rice (雀斑米) 」，以及劍橋市歷史協會推出了劍橋華人口述歷史系列，以及他擔任會長的劍橋市扶輪社邀劍橋市歷史協會主任Marike Van Damme 當講者，讓他結識了Marike Van Damme。會末他還提醒出席者，5月是亞裔傳統月，該會還將陸續推出2場活動，一為5月18日的講座，講述一對夫婦因為排華法案，遷居墨西哥的故事，一為5月23日和包氏文藝中心合作的「李揚國亞美經驗攝影展」。 (二次更新版)

麻州州長Healey率經濟發展廳廳長郝伊平爭取州議會支持35億元「麻州領導法」

Healey-Driscoll Administration, Economic Development Planning Council, Coalition of Stakeholders Testify in Support of Mass Leads Act 

BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura T. Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll and Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao testified in support of H.4459, the Mass Leads Act, before the Joint Committee on Economic Development & Emerging Technologies.  

The Mass Leads Act is Governor Healey’s first economic development bill, the blueprint to making Massachusetts more affordable, competitive and equitable. The bond bill proposes $3.5 billion in critical investments, of which approximately $2.8 billion is supported through capital authorizations and $750 million is sourced from economic development tax changes.  

A recent analysis from the UMass Donahue Institue finds that the Mass Leads Act’s climatetech initiative of $1.3 billion across 10 years is expected to generate $16.4 billion in economic activity, creating nearly 7,000 new jobs.  

“Massachusetts’ economy is strong, but we urgently need to address challenges around the high cost of living and workforce shortages. We are a global hub for innovation, but we are facing increasing competition every day. The Mass Leads Act is made for this moment,” said Governor Maura Healey. “This bill will lengthen our lead in life sciences, stake our claim in emerging sectors like climatetech and applied AI, create jobs, attract and retain talent, and strengthen our economy and our competitiveness. We’re grateful for the opportunity to present our case for this bill to the Legislature and appreciate their careful consideration of this transformative proposal.” 

“Our economic development bill introduces groundbreaking investments that will help Massachusetts win the race to new discoveries, new companies and new jobs,” said Lieutenant Governor Driscoll. “We took what we heard from everyone across the state and packaged it into this bill that will benefit the unique economics of all 351 cities and towns.” 

Governor Healey, Lieutenant Governor Driscoll, and other members of the administration visited communities across Massachusetts during the Mass Leads Act Roadshow, highlighting the ways in which the bill will grow the state’s economy, support businesses, and attract talent. 

“When people think of Massachusetts, they envision a state renowned for its history of firsts. We aim to expand on that legacy, shaping Massachusetts as a hub of innovation, driven by proactive individuals with visionary ideas seeking to address our community needs,” said Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao. “Our 10-year proposal equips our state with the resources to achieve new heights in innovation. Through strategic investments in climatetech, life sciences, housing, tourism, and more, the Mass Leads Act will undoubtedly stimulate economic growth, attract new companies, and strengthen our workforce for a brighter future.”

波士頓公共衛生局將舉辦3場青少年精神健康峰會

             (Boston Orange 編譯) 波士頓市公共衛生局 (BPHC) 的行為健康中心將於5月13日、28日，以及6月3日，在南波士頓，為14至18歲青少年，其父母，在學校或校外照顧青少年精神健康的服務供應商或個人，課餘活動提供者等舉辦「為青少年心理健康而奮起：彌合差距並引發變革 (Rise Up for Youth Mental Health: Bridging Gaps and Sparking Change) 」系列高峰會。

            波士頓市公共衛生局希望藉由討論及活動，幫助參加者辨識從學校，到下課後，以及在家裏時，青少年所面對，或可取得的精神健康服務差距，並提出解決方案。

            這些高峰會將讓波士頓公共衛生局在制定有關青少年精神健康上的策略計劃時，能成為公眾的有用資源。

            根據波士頓公共衛生局”波士頓健康及精神健康報告"顯示，青少年的悲傷，無望及焦慮情緒有顯著增加，這情況在有色青少年中尤其明顯。目前有40%以上的波士頓公校學生持續覺得悲傷及無望，而2015年時，只有27%的波士頓青少年有這感覺。有自殺念頭的高中生人數也明顯增加，處於邊緣的年輕人，女性及同性戀學生，數據顯得更加嚴重。

波士頓公共衛生局局長，Bisola Ojikutu博士，以及該局的行為健康長Kevin Simon博士都指出，許多人因為精神健康而備受折磨，很顯然的波是噸需要更多精神健康服務。

            “為青少年心理健康而奮起：彌合差距並引發變革”峰會的會場將有精神健康資源，活動，食物，以及禮品。凡是年滿14到18歲，父母及照顧者，都可登記參加，並獲得25元禮券，先到先得。

            這場峰會的日期及時間為，

            5月13日下午3到7點，年紀在1到18歲的青少年。

            5月28日下午3到7點，給家有14到18歲青少年的父母，以及照顧者。

            6月3日，下午1點到5點，給學校的精神健康提供者，以及校後課程，

大波士頓商會宣佈執行董事會新添李熙嬡等5人

(Boston Orange 編譯) 大波士頓商會 (GBCC) 5月7日宣佈，該會執行委員會4月11日投票，無異議通過，增邀M&T銀行區域總裁李熙嬡 (Grace Lee) 等5名董事加入執行委員會。

大波士頓商會成立已逾百年，麻州內的知名企業幾乎全是會員。根據官網，該會有6種會員層級，最基本的會員種類為貢獻者 (Contributor) ，對象為營業額小於100萬美元者，年費1000元。最高層級是董事長圈會員，對象為營業額超過10億元的企業，年費3萬美元。

該會現任董事會主席為道富集團 (State Street)執行長Ronald P. O’Hanley，會長兼執行長為James E. Rooney。董事會共90人，並由其中40人組成執行董事會。

新加入該會執行董事會的5人為:

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES THREE NEW NEIGHBORHOOD LIAISONS FOR MID-DORCHESTER, ROSLINDALE, & FOR MISSION HILL, FENWAY/KENMORE, BEACON HILL, AND BACK BAY

BOSTON - Wednesday, May 8, 2024 - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu announced new staff in the Office of Neighborhood Services, including Anthony Nguyen as the Mid-Dorchester Liaison, Josh McCorkle as the Roslindale Liaison, and Maccon Bonner as the Mission Hill, Fenway-Kenmore, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay Liaison. The Office of Neighborhood Services is integral in connecting residents to City services and resources, facilitating resident input in all aspects of local government, ensuring the appropriate City departments respond to constituent service requests, attending neighborhood meetings, and responding to emergencies such as fires to help displaced residents.  “Our neighborhood liaisons are our residents’ direct connection to City Hall and its services,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “Anthony’s passion to serve from growing up in Dorchester and working at SPARK ensures that our residents will be heard and supported with compassion. Maccon knows City Hall and has shown his dedication to delivering for constituents. Josh’s background in communications and education will empower residents to continue to stay connected to City resources. I am excited for these three liaisons to become familiar faces in their neighborhoods.”

Anthony Nguyen Anthony Nguyen is a proud lifelong Dorchester resident with a passion to serve the Mid-Dorchester community. Prior to joining the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, Nguyen was the Director of SPARK Boston. He joined SPARK Boston in 2021 and held the position of captain, volunteering his time assisting with programming efforts. As the son of Vietnamese immigrants he understands the importance of community, cultural awareness, and advocacy for those who traditionally have lacked the opportunities to engage civically. In taking up his role as the Mid-Dorchester liaison supporting Uphams Corner, Bowdoin/Geneva, Four Corners, and Codman Square areas, Nguyen is excited to deepen his service in the neighborhood he calls home. Since Dorchester is the largest neighborhood in the city, there are two liaisons who provide constituent services for the neighborhood. The areas Dorchester Liaison Ross Cochran serves includes Dorchester Bay, Savin Hill, Ashmont, and Lower Mills.        “I look forward to working closely with residents to continue improving our neighborhood and address constituent concerns,” said Mid-Dorchester Liaison Anthony Nguyen. “I am excited to meet community leaders who have dedicated so much time to their neighborhood as well as the next generation of civic leaders. It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to serve the city I was born and raised in.”

Maccon Bonner Maccon Bonner was born in Boston and raised in Brentwood, New Hampshire. Bonner returned to Boston to attend Suffolk University in 2020. He interned for the Boston City Council District 8 office. He has a passion for connecting with constituents and bringing City Hall out of City Hall by making government accessible for all. Bonner is a resident of Mission Hill.  “Becoming a neighborhood liaison is a new chapter in my life,” said Mission Hill, Fenway-Kenmore, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay Liaison Maccon Bonner. “I can't wait to help continue to cultivate an environment where our neighbors, businesses, and institutions work in tandem with the great people in City Hall to address concerns and meet the needs of the community.”

Josh McCorkle Josh McCorkle is an experienced education, marketing, and communications professional. A Brookline native, he has a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston University and a master’s degree in elementary special education from Lesley University. Before joining the Office of Neighborhood Services, McCorkle worked as a teacher, university administrator, operations professional, and editor.  “As the Roslindale liaison, I plan to make community members feel that they have a clear line of communication with City Hall so that they can feel confident that their government is working for them,” said Roslindale Liaison Josh McCorkle.  “Anthony, Josh, and Maccon are compassionate leaders who are a great addition to the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services,” said Office of Neighborhood Services Executive Director Beata Coloyan. “I encourage community members to attend liaisons’ weekly Coffee Hours every Friday in neighborhoods to get connected to resources, personally meet their respective liaison, and receive guidance on how to navigate City services.”  The City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department is currently hosting Mayor Wu’s Neighborhood Coffee Hours. This spring event series is a unique opportunity to speak directly with the Mayor, neighborhood liaisons, and staff from City departments about open space and their neighborhoods.
