Eastern Bank CEO Richard Holbrook and former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie recognize 66 Massachusetts non-profit organizations

BOSTON, May 7, 2014 – Doug Flutie tossed autographed footballs to representatives from 66 nonprofits, as the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation donated $750,000 in grants at the 10th Annual Community Quarterback celebration.
Eastern Bank chairman and CEO Richard E. Holbrook and Flutie, the bank’s spokesman, honored the organizations before about 100 guests inside the bank’s corporate headquarters in downtown Boston. Among this year’s honorees was former WCVB-TV consumer reporter and news anchor Susan Wornick, who was recognized for her dedication to championing the interests of consumers living throughout eastern Massachusetts communities.
“Eastern Bank is proud to honor 66 local organizations that work tirelessly every day to put the needs of our communities first,” said Holbrook.  “We began the ‘Community Quarterback’ program in 2005 when we honored 10 local nonprofits.  It’s very rewarding – for my colleagues at Eastern Bank and the communities that we serve – to see this event grow every year.”
“It’s hard to believe that the Eastern Bank ‘Community Quarterback’ event is celebrating its 10th year,” said Flutie, who has quarterbacked every event.  “It’s great to be part of a team like Eastern Bank’s, which recognizes the importance of giving back to the community.”
The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation made a special $5,000 donation to the “Susan Wornick Journalism Scholarship Fund,” which is given to a student at her alma mater, Natick High School. Wornick recently retired after 34 years from WCVB-TV, where she worked tirelessly on behalf of consumers as their advocate and watchdog, thereby serving the interests of everyone in the community.
Today’s grants were among the more than $5 million donated last year to more than 1,500 non-profit organizations by Eastern Bank and the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation. In 10 years, the “Community Quarterback” program has honored close to 500 organizations with more than $7.0 million in grants.
