10th Annual “Community Quarterback” celebration

Eastern Bank CEO Richard Holbrook and former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie recognize 66 Massachusetts non-profit organizations

BOSTON, May 7, 2014 – Doug Flutie tossed autographed footballs to representatives from 66 nonprofits, as the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation donated $750,000 in grants at the 10th Annual Community Quarterback celebration.
Eastern Bank chairman and CEO Richard E. Holbrook and Flutie, the bank’s spokesman, honored the organizations before about 100 guests inside the bank’s corporate headquarters in downtown Boston. Among this year’s honorees was former WCVB-TV consumer reporter and news anchor Susan Wornick, who was recognized for her dedication to championing the interests of consumers living throughout eastern Massachusetts communities.
“Eastern Bank is proud to honor 66 local organizations that work tirelessly every day to put the needs of our communities first,” said Holbrook.  “We began the ‘Community Quarterback’ program in 2005 when we honored 10 local nonprofits.  It’s very rewarding – for my colleagues at Eastern Bank and the communities that we serve – to see this event grow every year.”
“It’s hard to believe that the Eastern Bank ‘Community Quarterback’ event is celebrating its 10th year,” said Flutie, who has quarterbacked every event.  “It’s great to be part of a team like Eastern Bank’s, which recognizes the importance of giving back to the community.”
The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation made a special $5,000 donation to the “Susan Wornick Journalism Scholarship Fund,” which is given to a student at her alma mater, Natick High School. Wornick recently retired after 34 years from WCVB-TV, where she worked tirelessly on behalf of consumers as their advocate and watchdog, thereby serving the interests of everyone in the community.
Today’s grants were among the more than $5 million donated last year to more than 1,500 non-profit organizations by Eastern Bank and the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation. In 10 years, the “Community Quarterback” program has honored close to 500 organizations with more than $7.0 million in grants.

SKEMA Business School announces new partnerships with two Chinese universities

SKEMA creates Engineering & Management double diploma and opens new sustainable development incubator for start-ups

April 2014. As part of its development in China, SKEMA Business School has announced two new partnerships with the prestigious University of Science and Technology of China (USTC,中國科技大學) and with Xi'an Jiaotong University(西安交通大學).

With USTC, SKEMA will offer a double degree in Engineering & Management which will provide both technical and management skills to students looking to work in senior positions in the high-tech sector. The technical components of the program will be taught on USTC’s campus in Suzhou during the first year, followed by management courses at one of SKEMA’s campuses in France or the US during the second year.

SKEMA also recently announced the opening of its second incubator in China, XJ-SKEMA Park of Sustainable Development in association with Xi'an Jiaotong University. The 6,000 space, located in the historic Gusu neighborhood of Suzhou, will host up to 50 start-ups specialized in sustainability and luxury management.

These two partnerships are testament to SKEMA’s growing presence in China which, besides its campus in Suzhou, also includes the original XJ-SKEMA Incubator, a 38,000m² facility for start-ups, opened in March 2013 with Xi'an Jiaotong University and Suzhou Research Institute Science & Education Development Co. Ltd (SISED).

USTC is recognized as one of the best universities in China and is considered the "cradle of the scientific elite". USTC has a very selective recruitment: only 0.3 to 0.5% of graduates can enter. It is part of the prestigious league C9, the nine top universities in China. Among its alumni are many professors from the best universities in the world: Berkeley, Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Cornell and Yale, as well as the Vice-President of Microsoft China, the CEO of Haier and the former CEO of Lenovo.

Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of China's oldest institutions of higher learning, founded in Shanghai in 1896. Today, Xi'an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive research university offering programs in ten areas, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, art, law and philosophy, with a major emphasis on science and engineering. It includes 23 schools with around 30,000 full-time students, has a faculty and staff of about 5,600, of which 2,686 are full-time teachers, including over 1500 professors and associate professors.
