The BRA and Fort Point Channel Operations Board announce 2015 Watersheet Activation Grant Awardees

The BRA and Fort Point Channel Operations Board announce 2015 Watersheet Activation Grant Awardees
A new year brings new art and energy to the Fort Point Channel
BOSTON – The Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) in conjunction with the Fort Point Channel Operations Board (FPCOB) recently awarded seven grants totaling over $54,000 to art, education, and community groups with plans for activating the Fort Point Watersheet for the 2015 season.
Grant applicants were asked to submit project ideas that would develop creative water-based programming around the edges of the channel or construct capital improvements within the Channel. The grant program is part of the Fort Point Watersheet Activation Plan, established in 2002 by the Mayor's Office and the BRA to spearhead a vision for a “Boston Common on the water.” The Plan, which proposed new cultural activities and year round programming, resulted from a successful collaborative effort between the City, landowners, nonprofit and cultural leaders, and residents.

“The City is proud of the level of involvement and caliber of talent behind this year’s initiatives and installations,” said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “These projects enhance the neighborhood of Fort Point and support our broader cultural agenda by promoting artistic expression throughout the City.”

Brian Golden, Director of the BRA, elaborates, “This year’s awardees bring a broad range of engaging programs, activities and installations to the Fort Point Channel. Although program executions vary, the goals and vision of participants are singular and aimed at spurring and sustaining the excitement we’re committed to bringing to the area.”

The Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Grant Program is funded by the Chapter 91 Waterways Regulations License for Atlantic Wharf, developed by Boston Properties.

2015 Winning Projects:

Greenway Echelman Sculpture
Applicants: Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy

Shimmer
Applicant: Claudia Ravaschiere and Michael Moss

Both projects will be developed and curated through juried calls to FPAC members, and will include free programming and activities for the public.

Discovering Fort Point Channel (DFPC)
Applicant: “e” Inc.
Award: $4,140
"e" inc. will offer six weeks of educational programming along the Channel, five days a week, that will engage over 600 children from Boston’s community centers, summer camps, and Boys and Girls Clubs. All of the proposed projects link to educational goals of the museum.

Applicant: Brown Box Theater Project

MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES ANNUAL CITY-WIDE CLEAN-UP DATES AND LOCATIONS
Greenovate Boston to host Arbor Day Events, April 25

BOSTON – April 16 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh is asking Boston residents to help clean-up the city this spring during Boston Shines. Now in its thirteenth year, the City’s annual volunteer Spring clean-up event will take place in different parts of the city across three weekends, bringing together more than 5,000 volunteers, including businesses, community groups, and residents to clean up after this winter’s unprecedented snowfall. During the first Boston Shines weekend on Saturday, April 25th, Greenovate Boston will be hosting Arbor Day specific events, such as tree mulching and plantings around the City.

"The snow mounds have melted, the days are getting longer, and spring has arrived," said Mayor Walsh. "Get outside and enjoy the sunshine, and join your neighbors over the coming weekends to clean up our communities, and make our City shine.”

Volunteer opportunities are focused in four service areas: physical service, university engagement, youth development, and creating opportunities to help unite neighbors and communities. Representatives from the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services are reaching out to neighborhood representatives to ask them for assistance in bringing vibrancy back to parks, sidewalks, school yards, and streets. Brooms, shovels, and other tools will be provided by the City and distributed at one of the hundreds of sites that have been identified for cleaning.

Boston Shines will take place over three weekends from April to May, in different regions of the City:
  • April 24th and 25th: Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Hyde Park, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury;
  • May 1st and 2nd: Bay Village, Chinatown, Dorchester, Mattapan, South End
  • May 8th and 9th: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Downtown, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, North End, South Boston, West End

State Consumer Affairs Office Compares Cell Phone Plans, Offers Tips for Purchasing Wireless Service

State Consumer Affairs Office Compares Cell Phone Plans, Offers Tips for Purchasing Wireless Service

BOSTON – Today, the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation released a survey of the top four nationwide cell phone carriers. The survey looked at various smartphone plans’ prices, the amount of data offered, and cancellation policies.

“If you’re looking to change or buy a new cell phone plan, you need to do your research before calling or going to a store. It will save you time and money if you know the plan you want,” said John Chapman, Undersecretary of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. “Navigating the details of different plans can be confusing, and we’re happy to give consumers tips and information to better compare these services.”

The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation conducted a survey of four nationwide cell phone carriers – Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile – comparing the prices and features of various smartphone data plans. For approximately $100 a month, consumers have many options for data, voice, and messaging packages for single-line access.

(see attached survey)

The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation advises consumers to find answers to some of the following questions before upgrading or changing their plan:

·         Know your current plan. Is it out of date and grandfathered in? Does it meet your needs based on your actual use?
·         Know how much data you use. Look at previous bills to calculate your average monthly use. If you were hit with overage charges, calculate how much extra you paid and whether you could save with a higher or unlimited data plan.
·         Ask about your contract’s terms. Can you cancel your plan during a trial period? If you attempt to leave the provider for another, will you be subjected to an early termination fee?
·         Ask if they have other plans available. Are there month-to- month, prepaid or other available options?
·         Ask for the representative’s name and employee number. Get all agreements in writing.
·         Keep records. Make note of the time and date of each conversation you have, documenting the representative’s name, store location, and any offer details. Make sure to get a written copy of any contracts or agreements.
·         Ask questions. Read the terms and conditions carefully and ask for explanation if needed. Make sure you understand your plan’s package, how much you will owe and when, and the cancellation policy.

FAQs
Q:  Is fasting for 20 hours safe?
A:  For most people, going without food for 20 hours is perfectly safe. There are a few exceptions — like kids under 12, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and people with certain medical conditions or eating disorders. The Famine is a juice/smoothie fast, which means entrants are to drink with plenty of water and juice throughout the 20 hours.
If you have any questions or concerns about fasting, check with a doctor before you or your children participate. We also have plenty of alternatives to a traditional food fast if you deem that more appropriate.
The 1-2-3 of Famine fasting
  1. Sleep lots.  Lower calorie intake means lower energy levels, so encourage entrants to get a decent amount of sleep before and during fasting.
  2. Hydrate more.  Make sure that plenty of juice and water are on hand during your event to ensure proper hydration. Be tummy-friendly by avoiding acidic juices like OJ.
  3. Go for gut-friendly foods after the fast.  Easy-to-digest foods like rice, pasta, and non-acidic fruits are best.
Q:  Can I do Famine without fasting?
A:  Fasting is a recognized part of the 20 Hour Famine, but it’s not required. If for any reason (medical or otherwise) someone can’t participate in a 20-hour food fast, there are alternatives.
• Techno-fast: Go without TV, the Internet, cellphones, video games, movies, etc. for a defined amount of time (except for online Famine fundraising . . . that’s still on the menu!).
• Single serving: Eat a single serving of rice or beans from a Dixie cup to get a perspective on what “portion control” means to those in extreme poverty.
• The “ONE”: What’s that one awesome food you just can’t live without? Chocolate? Chips? Taco Bell Fourth Meal? Live without it for a specific amount of time and put the money you would’ve spent toward helping hungry kids (along with your regular fundraising).
• Skip a meal or two rather than going the full 20 hours: Again, put the money you would’ve spent toward your fundraising goal.
