LightByte (2014 iF Communication Design Award Winner):
As urban spaces become more densely populated with digital artifacts, there is an increasing desire for new ways to reconnect with nature. Sunlight is one of the most fundamental elements in nature that we have free access to in urban environments. It is also at the core of how we experience the physical world. What if we could engage sunshine in the digital age, to tame, modify, and bend light to our will?

LightByte, a massive interactive sun pixel façade, modifies the sun’s rays at your whim into intricate shapes. It turns sunlight into an expressive medium to carry information, communicate ideas and to shape your own shadows (Link to video )

Hundreds of individually controlled servo flaps which act like “sun pixels” allow LightByte to let in or block sunlight to varying degrees. Hidden from the viewer are computing algorithms and kinetic mechanisms to animate light through these sun pixels. Wood is deliberately chosen to form the light-tuning facade. The wood, from its texture to the sound it produces, recalls patterns on the forest floor as interplay of shadow and light.

Encompassing the digital and the natural, LightByte attempts to encourage a dialog between the two in the urban jungle.

RED SOX UNVEIL 2014 FENWAY PARK IMPROVEMENTS

RED SOX UNVEIL 2014 FENWAY PARK IMPROVEMENTS
Refurbished Third Base Deck, Retired Numbers Along Yawkey Way Extension,
Debut of the ‘NESN Zone,’ and New Menu Offerings Among Changes in 2014

BOSTON, MA – The Red Sox today announced improvements to Fenway Park for the 2014 season, including a refurbished Third Base Deck, the installation of Red Sox retired numbers along the Yawkey Way extension near the new commuter rail station, an improved game-day experience by the NESN stage on Yawkey Way, and new menu offerings for fans to enjoy this season.

Inside the park, a fully refurbished Third Base Deck now features a new, 40-foot bar with seating and full drink menu on the deck’s upper floor. The lower level houses a line of newly appointed concession stands with new digital menu boards and televisions, including a 45 x 161-inch video wall comprising eight 46-inch television screens facing the bar that will show the game in high definition.

The Third Base Deck’s lower level also includes a new Tasty Burger stand featuring signature hamburgers and shakes available in vanilla, chocolate, and “Green Monster” mint flavors from the popular Boylston Street eatery. Fans can enjoy service from Tasty Burger wait staff at new high-top tables located adjacent to windows looking out onto Lansdowne Street.

Additionally, a new social media wall, made possible through a partnership with Samsung and Postano, will display social media content from Red Sox fans’ Instagram photos and tweets during games.

Outside the park, the Red Sox retired numbers, along with Jackie Robinson's #42 that was retired by Major League Baseball in 1997, now adorn the walkway leading commuters from the refurbished Yawkey Station platform to Brookline Avenue. The eight oversized, three dimensional numbers, which will be illuminated at night, are split evenly on the two sides of the walkway with Doerr, Cronin, Pesky, and Yastrzemski’s numbers on one side, and Williams, Rice, Fisk, and Robinson on the other.

The Yawkey Station, located just 511 feet from the doorstep of Fenway Park, now offers as many as 40 regularly scheduled stops per day, up from only 17 flag stops before the station’s completion. Yawkey Station is part of the commuter rail’s Framingham/Worcester line, which runs from Worcester to South Station. The last outbound commuter rail train from Yawkey Station departs at 11:36 p.m. on weekdays and 11:10 p.m. on weekends. Departure times for the last Yawkey Station train are subject to change based on the length of the game.

On Yawkey Way, fans will experience an enlivened ‘NESN Zone,’ home of NESN’s pregame show, which, in addition to the NESN stage, will include a NESN-themed specialty grill stand that features a variety of new food offerings inspired by NESN’s on-air personalities, and a refurbished ‘Budweiser Bash’ bar loaded with flat screen televisions.

Additional changes around the ballpark this offseason include a new netting system on the horizontal portion of the home plate net that uses thinner mesh to help improve the fans’ view, repairs to the Red Sox and visitor dugouts, updates to the Red Sox batting cage, and a new conference room space named ‘The Press Room’ located on the fifth floor media level.
On the Budweiser Right Field Roof Deck, a drink rail with stools have replaced previously existing table seating to provide fans with a different seating option.  Also, a new LED board has been added to the fascia of Right Field Roof and will display the time and temperature throughout the game.

A group seating area called ‘The 502 Perch,’ an addition to the Right Field Roof Deck, can accommodate groups of up to 14. The space, which sits directly above the right field bleachers where Ted Williams launched his 502-foot home run, pays homage to the slugger with a red seat in that space.

The Budweiser Right Field Roof Deck will also feature an expanded menu with items such as an open faced beef tenderloin sandwich, Fish & Chips, Maine Crab Cakes, a Breakfast Burger featuring fried eggs and mozzarella cheese, and Poutine, a Canadian dish of French fries with gravy and shredded cheese. This expanded menu will be offered to the table seating area around the bar which is open to any fan with a ticket to the game.

Fans can find other new menu items throughout the ballpark, including homemade Bavarian pretzel twists and KIND bars (a healthy snack bar) in peanut butter dark chocolate and protein, dark chocolate nuts and sea salt, and almond and coconut flavors. In the ballpark’s Big Concourse, new made-to-order ‘Fenway Fries’ are now available with a choice of toppings. A new vegetarian sandwich with grilled portobello mushrooms, arugula, tomato jam, and crispy fried onions will also debut in the Big Concourse.

In the Right Field Concourse, a new carving station will serve made-to-order, hand carved sandwiches, such as a sliced turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce, stuffing, and gravy, and a roast beef sandwich with au jus and horseradish sauce. Additionally, a specialty popcorn stand at Gate A will feature creative flavors, such as cheese and caramel, from Corn & Co., a local favorite based in Burlington, MA.

Dugout Seat patrons who make use of the club space at 72 Brookline Avenue will notice a new partnership with Wheels Up, a private aviation company. The newly dubbed ‘Wheels Up Clubhouse” (replacing the Absolut Clubhouse) will include runway graphics on the entrance windows as well as imagery of the Wheels Up aircraft fleet inside the club.

For all fans, the best ticket values are new “Sox Saver” games, including 13 in April and May.  Prices were lowered by $2 to $22 per ticket per game this year.  Visit redsox.com/tickets for the list of Sox Saver games and the 2014 promotional schedule.  Mastercard is the Red Sox’ preferred card provider.

2014 Food Truck Vending Year Kicks Off Tuesday, April 1

BOSTON – On Tuesday, April 1, Boston's food trucks will officially be back on the streets of Boston. This will also mark the start of late-night food truck hours.

A small portion of Boston's food trucks remain open year-round, but Tuesday marks the first day of food trucks appearing en masse at sites across the entire city. In mid-March, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced that food trucks in three locations – Copley Square, Boston University, and Northeastern University – will stay open an extra hour until midnight, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The locations were selected based on area foot traffic and public safety.

"This is our fourth food truck vending year in Boston, and the program has been incredibly successful," said Mayor Walsh. "Food trucks are an innovative small business model for many in Boston, and we will continue to engage the public and expand the program to other locations around the City."

This year, the City’s Mobile Food Truck Program will feature ten new vendors:
Chicken and Rice Guys #3
Evan’s NY-Style Deli
Lilian’s Smokin’ Rack BBQ
Mediterranean Home Cooking
Moyzilla
Stoked Pizza Company
Tea Station
Tenoch Mexican
The Bacon Truck
Zo on the Go
