The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy Announces its 2026 Winter Programming Lineup

A dazzling Ferris Wheel, a new Winter Playway map, and festive winter lighting invite Boston to rediscover The Greenway all season long

January 26, 2026 – Boston, MA – Today, the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy announced its 2026 winter programmatic lineup, featuring interactive light displays, seasonal attractions, and new family-friendly experiences designed to bring energy, wonder, and community to Downtown Boston throughout the cold-weather months.

Continuing the Conservancy’s commitment to vibrant placemaking year-round, this winter’s programming transforms The Greenway into a playful, illuminated landscape where residents and visitors alike can explore, connect, and celebrate the season.

WINTERACTIVE on The Greenway: Trumpet Flowers by Amigo & Amigo

As part of Downtown Boston Alliance’s annual WINTERACTIVE exhibition, the Conservancy is excited to present Trumpet Flowers by acclaimed design studio Amigo & Amigo at Dewey Square from January through March 2026. Trumpet Flowers is supported by the Greenway Business Improvement District (BID), and features luminous, trumpet-shaped blooms inspired by vintage gramophones and musical instruments. The glowing sculptures will create a warm and whimsical gathering place, inviting passersby to pause, interact, and experience art in an unexpected winter setting.

The Frostival Ferris Wheel on The Greenway with Extended Carousel Hours Too

For the first time, the Greenway Conservancy plans to host a 76-foot gondola Ferris Wheel adjacent to the Greenway Carousel during the month of February 2026, as part of Meet Boston’s city-wide winter campaign, Boston Frostival. The Frostival Ferris Wheel on The Greenway will offer riders sweeping views of Boston Harbor and the North End, adding a spectacular new winter attraction to Downtown Boston.

To complement the Frostival Ferris Wheel on The Greenway, the Greenway Carousel will extend its season through February, giving families another whimsical way to experience the park during Boston Frostival and enjoy harbor-inspired rides in the heart of winter.

Both the Greenway Carousel and the Frostival Ferris Wheel will feature complimentary community days courtesy of Highland Street Foundation, where riders both young and old can enjoy a spin on either attraction for free.

The Carousel will be free to ride on Thursday, February 19, from 12 to 8 p.m., and the Ferris Wheel will be free to ride on Friday, February 20, from 12 to 9 p.m.

If your organization is interested in sponsoring a free day of fun, you can reach out to us at eventproposals@rosekennedygreenway.org.

Introducing the Greenway Winter Playway Map

This winter, the Conservancy will debut a new Greenway Winter Playway Map, designed to help families explore The Greenway and Downtown Boston even as temperatures drop and snow begins to fall. The playful guide will highlight winter-friendly routes, activities, and points of interest, encouraging children and caregivers to stay active and curious all season long. A limited number of printed copies will be available for a limited time at the Greenway Carousel, and families can also download a printable version via the link above.

Winter Lights in the North End

To brighten the darker months, festive Greenway Winter Lights will return to the North End, sponsored by the Greenway Business Improvement District (BID), transforming the park into a glowing evening destination. The illuminated displays will enhance the seasonal atmosphere and provide a welcoming backdrop for winter strolls, neighborhood visits, and after-dinner walks through the city.

The REDNOSE Holiday Lights & Decor team installed the lights in the park and used more than 3,000 bulbs to illuminate the pergolas in the North End! The lights will be on view through February 23.

“We hope these winter programs inspire families to bundle up and rediscover the beauty of our city’s green spaces,” said Eileen Ong, Director of Programs and Outreach at the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. “The Greenway becomes something truly special in winter, and these fun, festive experiences invite people of all ages to explore, play, and make memories together.”

Discover The Greenway in Every Season

While many associate The Greenway with warmer months, the park remains an inviting destination all winter long. Visitors can enjoy the unique beauty of the Conservancy’s gardens as they transition into dormancy, revealing winter interest such as evergreens, textured seed pods, ornamental grasses, and vibrant pops of color from winterberry and holly bushes that attract birds throughout the colder months.

Open lawns across the park also provide space for spontaneous winter fun, from snow play to peaceful seasonal strolls after a fresh snowfall.

No matter the weather, The Greenway offers visitors countless opportunities to explore and engage with Public Art, and this winter is no exception. In Chinatown, Misa Chhan’s Year of the Snake is on display, encouraging visitors to reflect on the themes of legacy and resilience of Cambodian diasporic communities, as well as a series of flags featuring the Chinese character fu, meaning ‘blessing’ and ‘luck’. Chaan’s installations are on display through the end of January 2026.

In Dewey Square, Jeffery Gibson’s your spirit whispering in my ear continues to shine bright in the heart of downtown Boston with its brilliant colors and geometric designs. Featuring the artist’s own handwritten text and a series of found objects from his materials archive, the mural invites viewers to find inspiration in past and present generations, the planet, the universe, and all living things surrounding us. Gibson’s mural is on display through April 2026.

Farther north, near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Seaport Boulevard, Ja’Hari Ortega’s Big Hoops to Fill continues to delight park goers both young and young at heart, and remains open throughout the winter months, paying homage to the door knocker bamboo hoop earrings popularized in the 80s and 90s. This working swing set is a tribute to the themes of rest and play and an invitation to reclaim recreation and relaxation as a practice of radical care. Ortega’s installation is on display through October 2026.

In addition, a lighting and pathways improvement project led by MassDOT is currently underway and will continue over the next several weeks. These enhancements will improve visibility, safety, and accessibility throughout the Dewey Square and Fort Point Channel areas of the park, creating a brighter, more welcoming experience for winter visitors.

Guggenheim New York Announces 2025 Acquisitions of 39 works

(NEW YORK, NY—January 26, 2026) In 2025, the Guggenheim New York acquired 39 works, spanning from 1963 to the present day, by 31 artists. These acquisitions further the Guggenheim’s commitment to expanding its interpretation and presentation of modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on works that reflect diversity and innovative practices.

This year’s acquisitions continue the Guggenheim’s longstanding effort to fill gaps in the collection by strengthening representation across movements, regions, and mediums with an emphasis on artists historically underrepresented within the museum’s holdings. This initiative centered on acquiring works by women-identifying and Latinx-identifying artists, many of whom represent both groups.

Among the year’s highlights are two works by Colombian abstractionist Fanny Sanín, whose more than five-decade practice explores the relationships among symmetry, color, and geometry, beginning with early experiments in Abstract Expressionism. The museum also acquired its first work by New York–based, Dominican painter Freddy Rodríguez, another key figure in geometric abstraction whose contributions have long been underrecognized. His painting Guaroa (1973), acquired with support from the Latin American Circle, represents a significant addition to the museum’s collection of postwar abstraction. The museum further enriched its holdings of Latin American and Latinx art with works by Claudia Alarcón, Varda Caivano, Sandra Eleta, Sara Flores, Guillermo Galindo (in collaboration with Richard Misrach), Ximena Garrido-Lecca, Carlos Leppe, Santiago García Sáenz, and Santiago Yahuarcani.

In 2025, the newly formed Guggenheim Constellation Council (formerly known as the International Director’s Council) facilitated the key acquisition of Egyptian Painting, Scribe (1979) by influential Canadian artist Dorothea Rockburne. This work deepens the museum’s holdings of Minimalism and Conceptual art, finding dialogue with Rockburne’s peers in the collection such as Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly. The acquisition also complements the Guggenheim’s recent addition of Dawn City (1963) by Anne Truitt, helping to build a more comprehensive understanding of women artists working in abstraction during the mid-twentieth century. Through its international membership and collaborative model, the Guggenheim Constellation Council strengthens connections across the Guggenheim’s global network—linking New York, Bilbao, and Venice, and laying the groundwork for the forthcoming Abu Dhabi location, while advancing a shared mission and cultural dialogue.

The Guggenheim also strengthened its representation of artists long engaged by the institution, reinforcing its commitment to non-objective art. Notable gifts this year include works by Jenny Holzer and N. Dash, further advancing the museum’s dedication to collecting these artists in depth and building on recent exhibitions and new scholarship.  Additionally, the Guggenheim deepened its engagement with the artist Carrie Mae Weems through the acquisition of Lincoln, Lonnie, and Me – A Story in 5 Parts (2012), her acclaimed multimedia installation which draws on diverse narrative formats—including self-portraiture, social documentary, and oral history—to critically examine notions of subjectivity as they intersect with gender, race, and class. The museum acquired the major work Scrapbook #62 (2002–03) by Shinro Ohtake. In addition, Asian Art Council Cochair Alan Lau gifted the museum Paul Chan’s Sock N Tease (2013).

The museum’s photography collection grew with the addition of works by Erica Baum, Sandra Eleta, and Nancy Holt. In conjunction with the Young Collectors Council (YCC), the Photography Council also acquired three works by Elle Pérez, marking the artist’s introduction to the collection. Devotions II (2018–23), acquired through the Photography Council, reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists whose practices center community and embodied experience. Ascension (from Fire Island) (2019/21) and Force (from Fire Island) (2019/21), acquired through the YCC, underscore the group’s dedication to championing emerging voices whose work expands contemporary photographic discourse. Additional notable first-time acquisitions include works by contemporary artists Rachel Rossin, Ruby Sky Stiler, and Ambera Wellmann.

Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, states, “The Guggenheim’s slate of artworks acquired in 2025 is a testament to the ways in which the institution thoughtfully looks back at its roots and its commitment to experimental forms and transnational approaches, while remaining forward-thinking about broadening the narrative possibilities of our art holdings.”

These acquisitions were largely funded by the museum’s acquisition committees, including the Guggenheim Constellation Council, Asian Art Circle, Latin American Circle, WANASA (West Asia, North Africa, South Asia) Circle, Photography Council, and Young Collectors Council. Together, these groups ensure selections embrace a range of geographies, disciplines, timelines, and cultures.

PATRICK ROATH ENDORSED BY LEADERS WE DESERVE

PATRICK ROATH ENDORSED BY LEADERS WE DESERVE

National Organization Led By Activist David Hogg Backs Roath's Challenge to 24-Year Incumbent

BOSTON, MA – Today, Leaders We Deserve, the national progressive organization co-founded by gun safety advocate David Hogg, endorsed Patrick Roath in his campaign for Congress in Massachusetts' 8th Congressional District.

"Leaders We Deserve is hard at work building and supporting the next generation of Democratic leaders — I'm proud to have their support and to be part of that effort," said candidate Patrick Roath. “After almost a quarter century of Congressman Lynch, voters in MA-08 are ready for change. They want bold leadership on the issues that matter most: housing costs, childcare affordability, and protecting our democracy. That's what I’m about, and we are building a campaign prepared to deliver that."

"Leaders We Deserve exists to elect young compelling candidates who will actually fight for working families and against corrupt status quo politics — and Patrick Roath is exactly that kind of candidate,” said Leaders We Deserve President and Co-Founder David Hogg. “He understands the affordability crisis, he rejects corporate PAC money, and he's ready to deliver on housing, childcare, and health care. Stephen Lynch voted to thank ICE and against the Affordable Care Act; it's beyond time for new leadership."

The endorsement follows last week's endorsement from former Governor Deval Patrick and endorsements from ten local elected officials across the district. The endorsements come ahead of the first candidate forum of the cycle, being hosted on Thursday, January 29. Register here for more details.

PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS OF MASSACHUSETTS ENDORSES DAN KOH

PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS OF MASSACHUSETTS ENDORSES DAN KOH

“Our members know that when issues arise, Dan delivers results,”

says MacKinnon, Jr.

Andover, MA – Today, the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts (PFFM) announced their endorsement of Dan Koh in the Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District primary. Founded in 1945, PFFM represents more than 13,000 firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics across the Commonwealth.

"Firefighters know the difference between elected officials who show up only at election time and those who put in the work every day. Dan Koh has always been the latter. Our members know that when issues arise, Dan delivers results,” said Rich MacKinnon, Jr., President of the PFFM.

Koh emphasized his gratitude for the endorsement, recognizing the role unions will play in his fight to bring down prices and fight for families in the Sixth District.

"I am honored to have the endorsement of PFFM," Koh commented. "Firefighters and first responders are heroes who risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe. They deserve a leader who will advocate for their union rights and their families. I’m excited to work alongside PFFM and create brighter futures for Massachusetts residents, especially here in the Sixth District."

Koh’s campaign has gained critical momentum thanks to the support of over twenty local community leaders, over thirteen union locals, and Vice President Kamala Harris, while raising a record-breaking $2M+ in its first fundraising quarter, a record for an MA House campaign.

Governor Healey Issues Statement on Minnesota Shooting

BOSTON – Governor Maura Healey issued the following statement after federal agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis:

“Just stop. Enough is enough. President Trump and Kristi Noem need to call ICE agents back. These rogue federal agents do not belong on our streets. Another person shot dead. ICE is not just making us less safe — they’re a threat to the safety and wellbeing of Americans. And they’re draining the resources of law enforcement who actually know what they’re doing. It’s outrageous. We stand with the people of Minnesota. President Trump needs to listen to Governor Walz and end this operation now.”

Michelle Wu

After another gruesome act of fatal violence by federal agents on the streets of Minneapolis, all Americans must demand that the Trump Administration end its deadly, unlawful, and unconstitutional occupation of the Twin Cities.

The ongoing invasion of our cities by a dangerous and out-of-control federal administration must be stopped. This week, the City of Boston led 44 cities around the country in supporting the federal lawsuit to end the illegal ICE surge in Minnesota.

Our hearts are with Alex Pretti’s loved ones and the people of Minnesota and we share their grief. While we mourn once again a tragic and needless death, we urge the court to take immediate action to stop the violence, end the occupation, and help local leaders in the Twin Cities restore peace to these communities under siege.

  • Curbside trash and recycling collection will operate on a Monday holiday collection schedule. As a result, all Downtown Districts, Charlestown, Roxbury, and South Boston will remain on their regular trash and recycling schedule without delays. All other neighborhoods will experience a one-day delay in trash and recycling service.
  • Please note that special item collections will be cancelled or delayed this week, including food waste, mattresses, bulky/special items and textiles. Residents should visit boston.gov/trash-day to look up their address and find the most up-to-date information specific to their neighborhood and collection type.

  • Individuals have 48 hours to use a space saver after the end of an emergency. After that, residents must remove it from the street. Please note that space savers are banned in the South End and Bay Village.

The Public Works Department (PWD) will have equipment on to treat Boston's roads prior to the snowfall starting and will have over 850 pieces of equipment on City streets at the height of the storm. The PWD will have over 40,000 tons of salt on hand.

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is in constant contact with the National Weather Service to receive detailed forecast updates for the City of Boston and to ensure City departments have plans in place to handle the weather. Residents can sign up to receive AlertBoston notifications by phone, text, or email. Residents can call 311 for non-emergency issues.

Rules on clearing snow:

  • Property owners must fully clear snow, sleet and ice from sidewalks and curb ramps abutting the property within three hours after the snowfall ends, or three hours after sunrise if the snow ends overnight. Curb and pedestrian ramps to the street should be cleared fully and continually over the duration of the storm to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities. If the storm lasts for an extended period of time, property owners are asked to continually check and clear ramps abutting their property.
  • Removal of snow and ice from a private property to the street or sidewalk is prohibited.
  • Failure to comply with these rules can result in fines issued by PWD's Code Enforcement Division. Fines associated with improper removal of snow can be found here.

Snow safety tips:

  • Keep catch basins and fire hydrants clear. For a map of catch basins and fire hydrants, visit here. You can assist in keeping hydrants clear of snow so the Boston Fire Department can access them quickly in case of emergency.
  • Shoveling snow requires significant exertion; please be cautious and pay attention to signs of overexertion. Stop if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, nausea, or vomiting. Call 911 if those symptoms do not resolve quickly.
  • Snow piles can make navigating intersections dangerous for pedestrians and drivers. Please take extra care when turning corners with snow piles that might limit visibility.
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning is a concern during winter weather, especially with the use of generators. Residents should use their home heating systems wisely and safely, and have a working carbon monoxide detector on each floor of the home. Call 911 immediately if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Sitting in a car while idling can be deadly if the tailpipe is blocked. Do not let children sit in an idling car while shoveling. Clear any household exhaust pipes (e.g. gas exhaust for heating systems or dryers) and vehicle exhaust pipes of snow.
  • Have a contractor check the roof to see if snow needs to be removed. If roof snow can be removed from the ground with the use of a snow-rake, do so with caution. Avoid working from ladders, and be mindful of slippery surfaces.

Information and resources to support individuals experiencing homelessness:

  • If you see a person experiencing homelessness or individuals out in the cold who appear immobile, disoriented, or underdressed for the cold, please call 911.
  • The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) utilizes a city-wide network of emergency shelters, outreach providers, city agencies, and first responders to assist those in need of shelter.
  • Boston Public Health Commission's emergency shelters are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and when temperatures are below freezing (32 degrees), amnesty is in place for those with nonviolent restrictions. Men can access shelter at the 112 Southampton Street Shelter, and women should go to the Woods Mullen Shelter at 794 Massachusetts Ave. BPHC and the City also work closely with other shelter providers to ensure that no client is without shelter, food, resources, and a warm respite from the cold.
  • Shelters are available any time of day or night for those in need.
  • During extreme cold weather, street outreach teams operate with extended hours and provide mobile outreach vans on the streets in the evening and throughout the day.

Dress for the weather:

  • Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing.
  • Outer garments should be tightly woven and water-repellent.
  • Wear mittens over gloves; layering works for your hands as well.
  • Always wear a hat and cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs.
  • Dress children warmly and set reasonable time limits on outdoor play.
  • Restrict infants' outdoor exposure when it is colder than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Watch for signs of frostbite:

  • Signs of frostbite include loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.

Watch for signs of hypothermia:

  • These include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you or someone you know shows any of these symptoms. If symptoms are severe, call 911.

Heating guidelines for property owners and tenants:

  • Following the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code, the heating season officially begins on September 15 and runs through June 15. Property owners must heat habitable spaces at a minimum temperature of 68 degrees between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. and 64 degrees between 11:01 p.m. and 6:59 a.m.
  • In case of emergency, property owners are encouraged to keep a list of licensed contractors (electrician, plumber, and general contractor) on file. Tenants experiencing problems with their heating system should check the thermostat, ensure the dial is turned on, and report insufficient or no heat problems to the property owner or manager immediately.
  • If your landlord or property manager is unresponsive, call 311 to file a complaint.

Heating safety:

  • Never try to heat your home using a charcoal or gas grill, a kitchen stove, or any other product not specifically designed as a heater. These can quickly cause a fire or produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
  • Have your heating system cleaned and checked annually.
  • Install and maintain smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Carbon monoxide is an invisible gas produced whenever any fuel is burned. Common sources include oil or gas furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves, and some space heaters. It has no smell, taste, or color, but it is poisonous and can be deadly.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, including people.
  • Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when you leave the room, or go to bed.

To keep water flowing and pipes unfrozen during extreme cold:

  • The Boston Water and Sewer Commission recommends homeowners locate their home's main water shut-off valve and learn how to use it. Should a frozen pipe burst, shutting the main valve quickly will minimize flooding and property damage.
  • Homeowners should insulate pipes in unheated areas like basements, garages, and crawl spaces. Use inexpensive hardware store materials to prevent pipes from freezing and to keep warm water flowing.
  • Keep cabinet doors open to circulate warm air around pipes. A trickle of tap water through pipes during extreme cold can also help prevent them from freezing up.
  • Locate your water meter, protect it from drafts, and make sure basement doors and windows are shut tight.
  • If pipes freeze, thaw them slowly with a hair dryer, if possible. Never use an open flame to thaw pipes. If water is lost in all taps, call the BWSC 24-hour Emergency Assistance Line at 617-989-7000.
