Boston Public Market Announces Second Round of Vendors for Permanent, Year-Round Local Food Market

Boston Public Market Announces Second Round of Vendors for Permanent, Year-Round Local Food Market
35+ Small Businesses to Sell Locally-Produced Items Starting in July
BOSTON — The Boston Public Market today announced twelve additional small businesses that will sell locally-produced goods in the new permanent, year-round market on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway directly above the Haymarket MBTA station. Starting in July, the 28,000-square-foot Market will house over 35 farmers, fishermen, and food producers from Massachusetts and throughout New England, selling items such as farm fresh produce; meat and poultry; milk and cheese; fish and shellfish; bread and baked goods; flowers; and an assortment of specialty and prepared foods.

“We are thrilled to be included in this wonderful group of farmers, fishermen and food artisans at the Boston Public Market,” said Kim Denney and Rich Jakshtis, owners of Chestnut Farms in Hardwick, MA. “We look forward to connecting the Boston community with agriculture and offering our tasty, locally raised, healthy meat - and we also look forward to shopping there ourselves!”

UNION SQUARE DONUTS AND GEORGE HOWELL COFFEE POP-UP: TODAY
In celebration of this exciting announcement, two of the new vendors, George Howell Coffee and Union Square Donuts, will host a pop-up today from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. on Congress Street outside the Haymarket MBTA station. Free coffee and donuts will be available for passing residents and commuters (while supplies last).

"We're excited to be outside the Boston Public Market this morning, giving commuters a preview of the upcoming market," said Josh Danoff, co-founder of Union Square Donuts in Somerville. "We're looking forward to bringing our handmade, from scratch donuts to downtown Boston."

The Boston Public Market will be the only locally-sourced market of its kind in the United States. Everything sold at the Market will be produced or originate in New England. Boston Public Market vendors are proud to accept SNAP/EBT for all eligible market products.

The Market will span the ground floor of 100 Hanover Street (formerly known as 136 Blackstone Street), which also contains the Boston RMV branch, entrances to the Haymarket MBTA station, vent stacks for the Interstate-93 tunnel, and a parking garage. The Market is located in downtown Boston’s emerging Market District, next to the Haymarket pushcart vendors and the historic Blackstone Block.

“At the Boston Public Market, the people of Boston can meet the faces behind their food and discover the incredible bounty of our region,” said Elizabeth Morningstar, CEO of the Boston Public Market. “This is a place where all residents of Boston can come together around food and flavor, and discover a real connection to each other and the food they eat.”

The Boston Public Market will feature a diverse offering of programs designed to highlight regional culinary traditions and local food production, as well as inspire healthy eating and creative cooking among families and individuals. The Trustees of Reservations is the lead programming partner and will manage and staff a teaching kitchen in the heart of the market, working with other non-profit organizations and for-profit partners to offer exciting classes, demonstrations, and other programs. More info to come!

“Being part of the Boston Public Market is a great opportunity to introduce a broader audience to the fresh herbs we grow on our farm and the tea and spice blends we produce,” said Amy Hirschfeld and Tatiana Brainerd, owners of Soluna Garden Farm in Winchester, MA. “We can't wait to meet our new Boston Public Market customers and find out what they're cooking with all of the amazing locally grown and locally produced foods from the market.”

“We are thrilled to be able to support the hard work of local fishermen by bringing their catch to the Boston Public Market,” said Jason Tucker, chef at Red’s Best in Boston.

COUNCILOR JACKSON SEEKS TO INCREASE SAFETY AND OPPORTUNITY

COUNCILOR JACKSON SEEKS TO INCREASE SAFETY AND OPPORTUNITY
Boston, MA - In the wake of multiple tragedies that have recently afflicted many of Boston’s neighborhoods, Councilor Tito Jackson today filed legislation aimed at reducing gun violence, and promoting safety and opportunities throughout the city.
“Our community is at a crossroad. We have a choice to make meaningful change, and uplift our community, or face staying on the current course,” said Councilor Jackson.
The first piece of legislation filed by Councilor Jackson aims to have the Boston City Council support The Justice Reinvestment Act filed by State Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz and State Representative Mary Keefe. The legislation filed by Senator Diaz and Representative Keefe includes four primary reforms in criminal sanctions. The reforms include a repeal of mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes, a step down of certain non-violent felonies to misdemeanors with shorter terms of incarceration, a creation of medical parole regulations for inmates who are permanently incapacitated, and an elimination of automatic collateral sanctions at the RMV for drug related offences that are unrelated to operating a vehicle. The Act also requires that any savings accrued from these sentencing and reentry reforms to be calculated, tracked, and reinvested into broad based community education and workforce development programs for youth, those living below the poverty line, those with long term unemployment needs, victims of violence, and other vulnerable populations.
“Our criminal justice system is currently costing taxpayers $53,000 per year per incarcerated person without the kind of returns taxpayers should expect for that kind of money. Compare that to an average per pupil expenditure of just over $14,000. This math does not work for taxpayers, for our children, or for the safety of our communities. I am grateful to Councilor Tito Jackson for taking on this issue at the city level,” said Senator Chang-Diaz
“The Justice Reinvestment Act at its core is about re-examining our priorities,” said Representative Keefe.  “We need to stop focusing on severing connections between people and isolating individuals through incarceration and stigmatization, and refocus our efforts on reconnecting and strengthening ties within our community, and one way to do so is through gainful employment. Our work lives are one of the important ways that keeps us accountable in society and connected to our community.”
To strengthen this legislation Councilor Jackson filed a hearing order set to address gun violence in the city of Boston. Despite the drop in 'homicides with guns', in its most recent reports, Boston Police Department indicates a spike in shootings in 2015 compared to 2014.
The hearing order filed by Jackson will pull together all key agencies related to public safety, and initiate a thorough review of the current initiatives approaching gun violence, with a special focus on reviewing the “Richmond Model”.
The innovative Richmond Model, similar to Boston’s Operation Ceasefire Program, takes a multifaceted approach utilizing partnerships from the private/public sector, community involvement, and technology.  The program utilizes “neighborhood change agents” that check-in with members of the community, often in local barbershops, churches, corners stores, etc, and report back to local officials what is going on in the community. Paired with data from Boston Police, change agents are able to seek out those most at risk to commit a violent crime, and through life coaching, mentorship, and other positive reinforcement mechanisms, change agents are often able to diffuse community tensions and reduce violence.

EVERETT MAN CHARGED WITH CONSPIRING TO OBSTRUCT NATIONAL SECURITY INVESTIGATION

EVERETT MAN CHARGED WITH CONSPIRING TO OBSTRUCT
NATIONAL SECURITY INVESTIGATION

Boston – This afternoon the United States Attorney’s Office in Boston filed a federal conspiracy charge against a 25 year old Everett man who has been associated with a plot to kill an unnamed target in another state.  David Wright a/k/a Dawud Sharif Wright a/k/a Dawud Sharif Abdul Khaliq, was arrested last night by federal authorities and had an initial appearance today in U.S. District Court in Boston.  His detention hearing is scheduled for June 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.

Wright is charged in a one count complaint which alleges that he conspired with now-deceased Ussamah Abdullah Rahim to obstruct a federal investigation by destroying electronic evidence on Rahim’s smartphone.  Rahim was shot and killed yesterday morning after he attacked Boston Police Officers and FBI agents seeking to question him.

As alleged in the complaint affidavit, Rahim, a 26-year-old private security officer, was planning to engage in a violent attack in the United States, and had purchased three military-style fighting knives and a sharpener in furtherance of this plan.  In intercepted calls between Wright and Rahim, the men discussed a knife attack on an individual not named in the complaint, and suggested that the target was to be beheaded and have his/her head placed on his/her chest.  According to the complaint, such beheadings are a tactic of some foreign terrorist organizations which use such killings in propaganda videos.

The affidavit also alleges that Wright and Rahim met with a third person on a beach in Rhode Island on May 31, 2015, to discuss the planned beheading.

At approximately 5:00 am on June 2, 2015, law enforcement intercepted a call between Wright and Rahim, in which Rahim insisted that he could no longer wait to take action.  Instead of carrying on with his plan to behead the planned out-of-state target, Rahim declared that he was going to, “go after” the “boys in blue,” here in Massachusetts, because, “it’s the easiest target.”  Rather than discourage Rahim, Wright supported the plan, telling Rahim to prepare his will and to leave his possessions to a named individual.  After discussing Rahim’s plan to attack police officers in Massachusetts, Wright advised Rahim to destroy his phone and all of the evidence it contained to prevent “CSI” at “the scene” from obtaining incriminating information.

According to the complaint affidavit, on June 2, 2015, law enforcement officers met with Wright after Rahim attacked officers in Boston and was shot.  Wright told officers of a recent rendezvous with Rahim on a beach in Rhode Island, and of Rahim’s intention to behead a specified individual in another state.  Wright indicated he agreed with Rahim’s plan and supported it.

The charging statute provides a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.  Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.  Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

This investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Boston Field Division, Boston Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and member agencies of the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force, including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Marshals Service and others.  In addition, the Everett Police Department played a critical role in the response.

This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts’s Anti-Terrorism and National Security Unit in coordination with the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

昆市 6/13 晚慶第64屆旗幟日

The City's annual Flag Day Parade and Celebration, a 64-year annual tradition that has grown into one of the largest of its kind anywhere, is set for Saturday, June 13 with the 7:00 p.m. parade, and the fireworks display launching at about 9:00 p.m.
The parade steps-off on Coddington Street, before making its way to Hancock Street, turning right onto Merrymount Parkway, and ending at the entrance to Pageant Field anchored by the annual parade highlight: nearly 2,000 city young people from groups across the City marching with American flags.
The parade culminates into a celebration at Pageant Field with a flag-raising of an impressive 30' x 60' version of Old Glory, the presentation of the Richard J. Koch Memorial Youth Service Award, and a patriotic performance and sing-a-long.
The evening will be capped off by a spectacular fireworks display over Black's Creek that will kick off roughly around 9:00 p.m

Boston
