AT&T 在麻州最大零售新店 推出波士頓馬拉松賽手機盒

             (Boston Orange 周菊子波士頓報導)麻州州長查理貝克(Charlie Baker),波士頓市長馬丁華殊(Martin Walsh)AT&T移動部門執行長Glenn Lurie等人,昨(十七)日聯袂揭曉AT&T的波士頓馬拉松賽手機盒。該手機盒的收入,將分別捐給波士頓體育會(BAA),紅襪隊基金會,麻州總醫院的“本壘項目”。
            美國大電信服務公司之一的AT&T,於2012年到2014年間,在波士頓一帶投資了四億元,鋪設電信網路。四月初,又在波士頓波約斯頓街(Boylston699號,離波士頓馬拉松賽終點線僅咫尺之遙處,新開了一家佔地九千平方呎大零售店。

            AT&T移動部門執行長Glenn Lurie表示,為慶祝該公司推出大波士頓的最大一家AT&T零售店面,也為向波士頓馬拉松賽致敬,他們特地推出一款只在該店出售,售罄就絕版的波士頓馬拉松賽手機盒。
            該手機盒適用於iPhone 5S iPhone 6iPhone 6 PlusSamsung Galaxy S5等型號的手機,採用波士頓馬體育會批准的圖案與黃底色彩,僅此一款,售價三十元。其中九元將捐給波士頓體育會(BAA),八點五元將捐給紅襪基金會,以及麻州總醫院的“本壘項目(Home Base program)“。

            AT&T的公關公司Duffy&Shanley表示,這款手機盒是限量版,售罄就絕版了。但該公司並未透露供銷售的數量到底有多少。
            查理貝克在儀式中指出,對大多數的社區來說,主街或市中心的是否興旺,是人們辨識該地區是否繁榮的根據,AT&T的投資,說明了該公司對波士頓的信心。此外,儘管波士頓市和馬拉松賽都已經國際聞名,但他要強調波士頓馬拉松賽是波士頓這地方的比賽,是大波士頓人都引以為榮的地方。他還感謝AT&T捐出巨款給“波士頓一基金”,也稱許AT&T投資巨款鋪設人們看不見的無線網路,帶動了麻州的經濟成長。

            馬丁華殊表示,AT&T在波士頓的投資,對波士頓的成長,跨向創新經濟很重要,也輝映了波市府在該店對面,整修波士頓公共圖書館的投資,都將使波士頓更將吸引人。這一週將是波士頓非常熱鬧的一週。
            當天出席活動的嘉賓,包括麻州眾議會議長狄樂歐,波士頓經濟長巴洛斯(John Barros),薩福克郡地方檢察官康雷(Dan Conley),波士頓市議員提多傑克遜(Tito Jackson),波士頓馬拉松傳奇人物Bill Rodgers,波士頓體育會執行長Tom Grilk等人。

HSAPC 探討亞裔在美如何突破困境 更上層樓

“在美國做亞裔(Being Asian in America)”,是亞裔移民進美國逾百年後仍然面對的身份認同困惑。哈佛大學內新成立的“哈佛學生的亞太裔聯盟“,日前為此舉辦會議,探討亞裔在專業上面對的挑戰與解決方案。
            由哈佛大學本科生,以及九個學院,研究系所學生組成的“哈佛學生的亞太裔聯盟(Harvard Students’ Asian Pacific Coalition簡稱HSAPC)”,為這會議安排了二場主題演講,四場座談,五個工作坊,從各個角度做探討。
講者嘉賓,包括以“憤怒亞裔男(Angry Asian Man)“部落格出名的余菲爾(Phil Yu),曾任道富集團執行副總裁的周榮亞,麻州精神健康署多元文化事務辦公室主任王國書,曾任麻州電信局局長,現為Mintz Levin律師事務所合夥人的陳光耀(Geoff Why),波士頓市議員吳弭,哈佛大學醫學院助理教授陳眾山(Ira Chan),個人遺傳教育計畫共同創辦人暨哈佛大學醫學院遺傳學教授吳婷(譯音,Ting Wu),企業策略師Joon S. Han等不下十六人。
HSAPC在網站上寫著,為什麼亞裔要關心“在美國做亞裔”這個議題,因為哈佛大學校園內的學生,幾乎有四分之一都是亞裔後代,但在校園以外的美國社會,領導層中卻亞裔稀少,儘管亞裔在美國總人口中佔5%,亞裔在律師樓合夥人中只佔2.5%,在國會議員中也只佔2.4%。企業界的執行長就更是少到只有0.3%
            他們舉辦這會議,是希望探討,到底是哪些因素,阻礙了亞裔踏出校園後的成功之路,亞裔在工作場所,到底面對哪些困境,要克服這些困難,該怎麼做。
            在“把自己從刻板印象中區分出來:樓梯頂端的人(distinguishing the self from the stereotype: top of the ladder)“的其中一場講座中,周榮亞,王國書和自己創辦了律師事務所的Pon Nokham,波士頓長老教會“城市生活(Citylife)“資深牧師Stephen Um等人,從他們各自的成長,就業經驗,和出席者分享看法,心得,也指出亞裔該如何把持自己,別掉進那些刻板化印象所形成的陷阱。
            周榮亞坦言,自己年輕時曾是“憤青”,聽到一般美國人因為刻板印象,輕率使用帶歧視性語言來稱呼,形容亞裔,就滿肚子火,但放眼四看,又找不到和自己有同樣身份背景的可做模範者,十分鬱悶。他因此很早就不斷追問自己,要跨進領導層,得做些什麼準備,非常努力的在各方面完善自己。
            周榮亞指出,中美文化不同,對個人的處境的確有影響,但他認為作為亞裔美人,就要從容遊走於兩種文化之間,享受掌握兩種文化的優勢。例如中國人講究謙虛是美德,美國人講究彰顯自信,舉手投足要佔據足夠空間,作為亞裔就得學會適時適地的不卑不坑。
            也是十幾歲就從香港來移民來美的王國書表示,不論是否亞裔,做為個人,面對的第一個問題,常是定義自己是誰,喜歡什麼。刻板印象其實處處存在,同樣的敢於發言,如果是白人,人們會認為他有自信,是亞裔,就覺得他賣弄聰明,是黑人,卻覺得他激進,就是刻板印象造成的不同反應。王國書因此認為,要應對刻板印象這議題,在工作場所來說,得先摸清楚企業或組織文化,再來調整自己的舉動準則,才更有可能打破所謂的玻璃天花板。他也指周榮亞能夠在道富集團打進領導層,固然是能力極佳,卻也和企業文化給他這條件,有肯為他開路的輔導者(mentor)不無關係。

119屆波士頓馬拉松賽即將於四月廿日舉行,波士頓市長馬丁華殊(Martin Walsh),波市警察局長伊凡斯(William Evans)等人昨(十七)日中午舉行記者會,說明相關安全措施,強調不准使用無人機(drones),預期今年會有個令人愉快的馬拉松賽。
馬丁華殊及伊凡斯表示,今年的安全措施會和去年類似,請民眾提早出門去上班,儘量搭乘公共交通工具進城。
            伊凡斯並說明相關交通限制,包括用作馬拉松賽跑道的波約斯頓街,以及鄰近的紐百利街(Newbury,杭廷頓道(Huntington),都將完全封閉。
            伊凡斯表示,波市府將採取多重安全措施,包括沿路佈置便衣及穿制服的警察,以及偵測炸彈的狗。有意到波約斯頓街(Boylston)觀賽的民眾,最好不要攜帶大包包或揹包,嬰兒推車,冷藏箱等,以免安檢費時。

            他也提醒參觀馬拉松賽的遊人,今年的新規定是不准施放無人機。他說警方將會使用“反無人機科技”,來制止相關行動。
            波士頓市長馬丁華殊表示,波士頓馬拉松賽已經成為大型國際體育競賽,也是所有波士頓人都喜愛的活動,波士頓市府,警察局以及所有合作夥伴,都將盡力保護民眾安全。但他們也要提醒民眾保持警覺,看到任何可疑情況,趕快通知警察。
            波市府公佈的安全措施包括,在馬拉松賽沿路,安裝100個攝像機,在終點線附近,以及後灣區安置五十個觀察點,監看群眾。

            波士頓市部分的馬拉松賽路線,將有十四輛救護車,一百四十名騎自行車的,開救護車,徒步,以及駐守在醫護帳篷的急救人員待命,
            在終點線的兩個大醫療帳篷之外,波士頓公共衛生局將在波士頓廣場()設置一個小的醫療站,備有內設三十張床的急救巴士。



MAYOR WALSH OUTLINES PUBLIC SAFETY PLANS FOR BOSTON MARATHON
BOSTON Friday, April 17, 2015 – As the City of Boston prepares for millions of visitors for the 119th Boston Marathon, Mayor Martin J. Walsh today released public safety plans to ensure a successful series of events.

“The Marathon is a major international athletic contest, and a celebration of all that we love about Boston,” said Mayor Walsh. “We have worked together collaboratively, with the Boston Police Department, and all of our partners, to keep everyone safe. We also ask the public for vigilance, and are encouraging everyone, if you see something, say something.”

Public Safety

  • Boston Police Department (BPD) will have uniformed and undercover officers along the marathon route.
  • Over 100 cameras will be active along the Boston portion of the Marathon route, and upwards of 50 observation points will be set up around the finish line area in the Back Bay to monitor the crowd.
  • Spectators are encouraged to leave large items such as backpacks and strollers at home. These items are not banned; however, individuals may be subject to search.
  • Call 9-1-1 in an emergency situation and follow @bostonpolice for race safety updates.
  • Boston Fire will have walking patrols along the course to respond to incidents. Patrols can call-in additional assets, utilizing the alleys and adjacent roadways to the course. Air quality monitoring will also be carried-out along the route.
  • Boston Fire will stage its specialized units for Tech Rescue, Haz Mat, Decon, and additional apparatus at strategic locations on both sides of the course.

Emergency Medical Services

  • 14 ambulances will be located along the Boston portion of the race route to support the 24 ambulances providing service coverage throughout Boston.
  • 140 Boston EMS personnel will be located along the Boston portion of the race route on bicycles, utility vehicles, foot patrol, and in medical tents, in addition to the crews covering the rest of the City.
  • In addition to the two large medical tents in the finish line area, Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) will have a small medical station on the Boston Common with a 30-bed ambulance bus ready to deploy.

Street Closures & Traffic Advisories
Please see attached traffic advisory from the Boston Transportation Department for full traffic and road closure information.

  • Vehicle traffic will be prohibited and parking will be restricted on many streets in Boston in the days leading up to the Boston Marathon and on Monday, April 20, 2015.  
  • Using the MBTA to travel to and from Boston on Marathon Monday is strongly recommended.  Detailed information on MBTA service can be found at www.MBTA.com.  For a faster return trip, the MBTA advises riders to purchase a round-trip rather than a one-way ticket.
  • On Marathon Monday, Newbury Street and Huntington Avenue outbound will be closed to vehicle traffic to allow easier spectator movement in the area.

Emergency Communications

  • The City’s Emergency Operations Center will be open on Saturday and Monday to monitor the races. The EOC will be staffed by our city departments, state agencies and our non-profit partners to coordinate the City’s Operational plan.  Additionally, the EOC will monitor the weather, maintain situational awareness regarding the various Marathon events, ​respond to any resource requests from public safety ​and manage family reunification if needed.
  • Boston EMS, Police, Fire, and the Office of Emergency Management ​will have personnel assigned to the multi agency coordination center at the Massachusetts Emergency Operation Center in Framingham.
  • BPHC will have staffing at the Dispatch Operations Center and Central Medical Emergency Dispatch (CMED) Center where ambulance to hospital communication throughout metropolitan Boston is coordinated.

MIT CCCS 2015 Spring Concert

MIT Cambridge Chinese Choral Society (CCCS) will be performing its 2015 Spring Concert “For that unregrettable Spring” on 5/23 Saturday night 7:30 PM at MIT Classroom 34-101 (Enter from Vassar St.). 

This concert will be conducted by the University of Illinois Choral Conducting DMA Dr. Yufen Yen, and accompanied by current Boston University Piano DMA student I-Ying Lin. Songs including Chinese artistic songs, newly composed Taiwan folk songs.  CCCS will be also be bringing the several English songs to the concert, as well as pop songs performed by the small group.

The Spring concert will be free of charge, and fund raising will be based on individual donations.  Please come and experience the wonderful musical performance that we have prepared.

Ethiopian Star Claims B.A.A. Invitational Mile In 4:35.4

Seeking shelter from both a headwind and her own inexperience, Dawit Seyaum ran the first loop of the B.A.A. Invitational Mile tucked in behind Morgan Uceny. After all, the 18-year-old from Ethiopia had never run a road mile before, while Uceny was a three-time champion here.

“After the first time around, I was confident,” said Seyaum through a translator. “I thought maybe it was better for me to push.”

And push she did. Seyaum, the 2014 IAAF World Junior Champion at 1500 meters, took a slight lead as the pack began the last of three loops, starting and ending at the Boston Marathon finish line, and by the final turn toward home the young dynamo was fully in command of her elders. Seyaum’s winning time of 4:35.4 smashed the course record of 4:38.6 set by Anna Willard in the event’s inaugural year of 2009.

“It was a very good race,” she said, smiling shyly. She will return to Addis Ababa $3,000 richer for her efforts and with warm memories of a cheering crowd that, her translator said, surprised and delighted her.

Although denied her fourth victory, Uceny sounded upbeat afterward. “I was really happy with the race up until the final 100 meters,” said the Boston-based athlete who in 2011 was ranked #1 in the world at 1500 meters. “The monkey definitely got on my back. It was a bit of a different feeling in this race; usually I come off that last turn feeling really strong. But it was a little faster race than in the past and I felt really good in the front so I wasn’t going to slow down. Dawit got a really good jump on me to take the lead and I still felt like I was able to stick with her, but didn’t quite have it down that last stretch.”

Although Heather Kampf passed Uceny in the final meters to take second in 4:37.0, Uceny’s third-place time of 4:37.7 was six seconds faster than her previous best time in this race.

Seyaum, likely to be a force for years to come, is lacking in neither talent nor ambition. With a 1500-meter personal best of 3:59.53, making her one of only four junior women in history to break four minutes, she was asked about her goals for the rest of 2015.
“3:57,” she replied.

The fastest time in the world last year by a woman of any age? 3:57.0.

In the Girls’ Scholastic Mile, consisting of two runners from each of the eight cities and towns—Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline, and Boston—along the Boston Marathon course, defending champion Lauren Hazzard and teammate Shelby Arden of Hopkinton worked together for much of the race before Aarden outsprinted Hazzard for the individual crown, 5:25.0 to 5:25.7.

It was the fourth-consecutive team victory for Hopkinton.

Hazzard took off from the gun, and was soon joined by Aarden, Sarah Lagan of Natick, and Kristin DeVellis of Framingham. The four went into the final loop together before the Hopkinton duo pulled away, setting the stage for an intra-squad duel to the line.

“You have to save it up for the last lap,” said Aarden, an 18-year-old senior and veteran on this course, having placed second in the Scholastic Mile in 2012 and third in the Middle School 1K in 2011. A 2013 Boston Globe Cross-Country All-Scholastic, Aarden said of her late-race strategy: “I let my legs take over.”

Lagan finished third, in 5:29.6. “I just tried to stick with them,” she said. “Hopkinton is always super strong. I love this event. It’s so fun.”

Hopkinton swept the Girls’ Middle School 1K as well, with Abigail Fischer leading wire to wire before winning in 3:29.7. Sixth at the Massachusetts State Middle School Cross Country Championships this year, Fischer employed a pragmatic strategy.

“I wanted to go out really hard, because if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to push it because I can’t sprint,” she said.

Her teammate, Jane Stilwell, had a different approach. “I just kept running,” said the runner-up (3:33.7). “I didn’t worry about strategy.” When she heard her coach yell near the end of the race, she sprinted to outkick Brookline’s Hattie Grant, who finished third in 3:34.1.

2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Times 4:04.1 for Win

By Any running enthusiast knows that Boston is all about tradition, and the tradition of excellence in the B.A.A.'s middle distance events - held on Marathon Saturday - is now as firmly entrenched as any of those in Monday's Marathon. Olympic silver medalist Dejen Gebremeskel added his name to the list of illustrious winners of the event, winning the B.A.A. Invitational Mile title in a swift 4:04.1. Also earning wins today were Michael McDonald in the Boys’ Scholastic Mile and Lucas Aramburu in the Boys’ Middle School 1K.


Men's B.A.A. Invitational Mile

This was the one to watch. A field of seven world class milers, hammering around the streets of Back Bay. It's a sight to see, and it sure was today. All the more so for the manner in which Ethiopia's Dejen Gebremeskel – a two-time B.A.A. 5K champion - gave his more fancied peers a lesson in road miling. Gebremeskel, indeed, had never raced this distance on the road before, although his Olympic 5000m silver medal and 12:46.81 PB made him fearsome enough in any medium.

Even so, it was interesting to see the lithe Ethiopian surge to the front of the field and stay there, holding a stride lead after one lap (1:23) and five meter gap after two (2:44). In his wake were five-time Arkansas All American Duncan Phillips; European 1500 bronze medalist, indoors and out, Chris O'Hare; two time Baylor All American and Welsh Commonwealth Games representative, Chris Gowell; Oklahoma All American Frezer Legesse; plus, BAA sub-four competitors, Steve Mangan and Dan Lowry. In a nutshell, it was a field of thoroughbreds.

Thoroughbreds like to run, and Gebremeskel made sure of that. Nobody was going to wrest this race from him without a struggle. "I wanted to see if I was quick," he said later.

Even so, with one lap remaining, nothing was assured. Gebremeskel looked powerful at the forefront, but O'Hare looked threatening - and had serious wheels - and Legesse appeared intimidatingly comfortable. Around the final lap, though, it all made little difference to Gebremeskel. He had the lead, he wanted to keep it, and that was all there was to it.

Around the final lap, Gebremeskel upped the tempo still further allowing the chasing group no hope of making any inroads. Back onto Boylston Street, he surged one more time, breaking the tape in 4:04.1, his winning margin having stretched to almost three seconds. O'Hare powered home to take the silver (4:07.0) with Legesse securing third in 4:08.1.

For his victory, Gebremeskel earned a cool $3,000, with O'Hare claiming $2,000 and Legesse $1,000.

Legesse was asked what he thought of his race. With a broad grin he simply replied, "Lots of fun."

With that, he spoke for all.


Boys' Scholastic Mile

This one was tactical, and brutally so. "B.A.A. Miles are notorious for being tactical," asserted Framingham's Mike McDonald. "But this one just got faster and faster."

A first lap of 1:52 saw last year's fifth placer, John Lara from Boston, fronting the congested pack, albeit side by side with McDonald, fourth last year, and Brookline's Emmanuel D'Agostino. But there was nothing in it. A decent sized blanket would almost have covered the entire field.

The second lap was completed with 3:16 on the clock. The blanket would have needed to be a bit larger, but we're still not talking tent-sized. With a single lap to go, it was still all to play for. But McDonald wasn't playing; just ask his peers who had to weather the storm he unleashed along the back straight. The pace had been building, but this placed it into a whole other gear, a gear only he possessed.

"I went all out," he explained. "And once I saw John Lara die, I just knew."

So did everybody else. The race was his. At the line, McDonald's time of 4:41.2 gave him a comfortable three seconds over D'Agostino (4:44.8) with Newton's Siddharth Nizamuddin (4:47.4) storming past Lara (4:47.9) to steal third.

"Our teams are all supposed to hate each other," proffered D'Agostino, contemplating his and Nizamuddin's minor placings. "Maybe the soccer teams do, but we're all friends. This 1-2-3, I'm really happy with how it turned out for all of us."


Boys' Middle School 1K

It might be only two laps, but this race was as intense as any that were to come. It was made so by the courageous front running of Brookline's Lucas Aramburu, who surged to the front from the gun and, literally, ran away with it.

"My coach didn't tell me to do that," he confided after his 2:54.1, eight second victory. "But it's short; you might as well hurt a lot."

That's the voice of somebody who knows how to race.

At the end of the first lap, Aramburu, who placed fourth here last year, held a three second advantage over his teammate Jon Diaz, Natick's Conor Giersch and Hopkinton's Johnny Cowen. The chasing trio worked hard, but with Arumburu surging all the harder along the Exeter Street back straight, it was all they could do to keep him in sight. As he took the hard left turn, back onto the Boylston Street home straight, Aramburu was away and flying, his victory assured.

Not so for the silver medal position. With the finish line just meters away, Cowen, Diaz and Giersch were still fighting hard, shoulder to shoulder. A surge in the last 10 meters secured it for Giersch, though, (3:02.3), with Diaz taking third (3:02.4) and Cowen (3:02.6). It was a fierce battle, but all three were quick to give kudos to the winner.

Pondering the dominance of the winner, Diaz simply shrugged: "He's a machine."
