First Installation Explores Theme of Family and Friends, Featuring Greatest Masters of Ming and Qing Dynasties
Li Bai's Night Revel in Peach and Plum Garden (detail), 1650, Chen Hongshou
BOSTON (October 12, 2019)—This fall, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), opens the first in a series of three exhibitions celebrating the largest and most significant gift of Chinese paintings and calligraphy in its history: the Weng Family Collection, comprising 183 objects that were acquired by and passed down through six generations of a single family. Featuring 19 works from the gift and a selection of decorative objects, Weng Family Collection of Chinese Painting: Family and Friends explores the themes of family and friends, demonstrating the intimate association in Chinese art between works of art and human relations. The exhibition assembles works by some of the greatest masters from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, such as Wang Hui and Chen Hongshou. Curated by Nancy Berliner, Wu Tung Senior Curator of Chinese Art, Weng Family Collection of Chinese Painting: Family and Friends is on view in the Asian Paintings Gallery from October 12, 2019 through August 9, 2020. Generously supported by the Tan Family Education Foundation. Additional support from the Rodger and Dawn Nordblom Fund for Chinese Paintings in Honor of Marjorie C. Nordblom, The June N. and John C. Robinson Fund for Chinese Paintings in Honor of Marjorie C. Nordblom, and the Joel Alvord and Lisa Schmid Alvord Fund.
The passion for art in the Weng family resulted not only in a superb collection of objects, but a reverence for art and scholarship that was passed down through generations. A member of the 19th generation of the family, Wan-go Weng recalls watching and listening as a young boy while his family admired and discussed works of art in their home—the same objects that he would inherit in 1948 and bring to the U.S. Throughout the gallery are works that carry the personal touches of the Weng family, including a large one-character auspicious calligraphy made for his son by Weng Tonghe (1830–1904), who built the greater part of the collection. Many of the works also feature colophons, or personal inscriptions, written by family members, revealing deep personal connections with individual pieces and the memories they evoked. For example, Weng Tonghe wrote on Chen Hongshou’s The three hermits: plum, chrysanthemum, and narcissus (1651): “My father liked to recite the poem [on the painting] and always kept the scroll with him. Every time I unroll the scroll, tears flow uncontrollably.”
The role and deep significance of friendship also manifests throughout the gallery. The interaction among friends when discoursing artworks was often recorded through colophons, recalling such gatherings or noting that a painting was given as a gift to a friend. The exhibition space is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a Chinese garden, a place where friends would often come together to view paintings in natural light. In addition to 19 works from the gift, the gallery includes a large decorative rock, as would be seen in most gardens as a reminder of the larger natural environment, and examples of fine 17th-century huanghuali furniture. A contemporary handscroll by Wan-go Weng, Elegant Gathering at the Laixiju Residence (1985) (1986), commemorates a momentous gathering held at his New England home, attended by six of the world’s most respected authorities on Chinese painting. In May 1985, these scholars and friends made the journey to Wan-go Weng’s retreat in the mountains to examine the family’s famed painting collection. Other paintings illustrate friends gathered to write poems together, as is depicted throughout the Suzhou Series album (about 1490) by Shen Zhou (1427–1509).

Exhibition Highlights

·        The handscroll Nine Letters to Home (after 1523) by Wen Zhengming (1470–1559), one of the greatest Ming-dynasty artists and calligraphers, demonstrates the elegance of the artist’s well-trained brush as well as moving spontaneity. The nine letters, written by Wen Zhengming to his wife and sons while he was residing in Beijing for an official posting, also portray an emotionality not usually seen in his more formal works.
·        A collaboration between Wang Hui (1632–1717) and Jiao Bingzhen (active late 17th to early 18th centuries), Portrait of An Qi in His Garden (1698) depicts a powerful salt merchant and art collector in his garden estate, a symbol of his refined status and cultural sophistication. This painting was gifted to Weng Tonghe in 1897 by Aixinjueluo Tingyong, a young scholar whom Weng took under his wing. After the tragic execution of Tingyong during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, Weng wrote a poignant inscription on the painting praising his friend and his accomplishments.
·        In Li Bai’s night revel in peach and plum garden (1650), Chen Hongshou (1598–1652) references a poem by China’s most celebrated poet, Li Bai (701–762), who describes the lavish drinking parties held in the Golden Valley garden. Appealing to the taste and connoisseurship of antique collectors of his time, Chen creates an evocative setting for such a gathering by displaying on the stone table an 11th century B.C.E. bronze vessel and a ceramic cup with crackled glaze typical of the 13th century C.E.
·        Popular in China since the Song dynasty, the theme of children playing is often considered to symbolize the aspiration for many descendants, appearing frequently in decorations on ceramics, metalwork and textiles. In Children Playing with Crickets (late 16th century), Hou Genyang (active 1575–1600) succeeds in presenting the auspicious theme while also communicating the joy inherent in the absorbing play of children.
·        The character for tiger, hu, can act as a talisman to ward off evil spirits. Weng Tonghe’s hu calligraphies were particularly sought after, as the character was believed to gain potency when written by a prominent person, like him, who was born in the year of the tiger. Included in the show is a highly auspicious hu written in 1890 or 1902 for his greatgrandson, Weng Zhilian, the adoptive father of Wan-go Weng.

The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) announced today the 2020 leadership election results. Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg will lead NAST as president starting January 1, 2020, succeeding current NAST President and Utah State Treasurer David Damschen.
A businesswoman, local official, and community leader, Goldberg was elected State Treasurer in 2014, then re-elected in 2018 on a platform to protect taxpayer dollars, bring new levels of transparency to state government, and advance policies that break down barriers and create economic empowerment.
“As the incoming president of the National Association of State Treasurers, I re-affirm our commitment to increasing access to financial literacy programs, helping expand college savings plans, improving retirement savings and ABLE accounts, promoting tools that save taxpayer money through outstanding debt management, and supporting the consistent return of unclaimed property,” said incoming NAST President and Massachusetts State Treasurer Goldberg. “I look forward to serving my bipartisan colleagues, as we advocate for sound financial policies.”
“I am honored to have been given the opportunity to serve as NAST president this year,” said current NAST President and Utah State Treasurer David Damschen. “I look forward to supporting Treasurer Goldberg, who is an exceptional Treasurer and exceedingly qualified to lead our association, in her role as NAST president in 2020.”

Baker-Polito Administration Awards $7.2 Million to 143 School Districts to Improve School Safety

Baker-Polito Administration Awards $7.2 Million to 143 School Districts to Improve School Safety

FRAMINGHAM – Today, Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito hosted a roundtable discussion on school safety at Walsh Middle School in Framingham and announced $7.2 million in grants awarded to more than 140 school districts across the Commonwealth to upgrade school security equipment and technology to bolster public safety resources for students and staff.

The grant funds will enable schools to upgrade and install crucial security infrastructure, including exterior door locks, surveillance video cameras, school site alarms, interoperable communications systems and active shooter detection systems. The grants are being awarded by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in conjunction with the Executive Office of Education.

Superintendents and school officials, as well as public safety officials, discussed what they are doing to keep students safe. The Governor and Lt. Governor were joined by Education Secretary James Peyser, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey C. Riley, Executive Office of Public Safety and Security Undersecretary Benincasa Thorpe, as well as Framingham Police Chief Steven Trask and Framingham Fire Chief Joseph Hicks.

“These investments will provide much needed safety resources to our students and teachers in schools across the Commonwealth,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with school officials to understand how we can better protect our schools, and we are pleased to have worked with the Legislature to award this round of grants. We are hopeful that we can continue this discussion as we consider this year’s budget to build on these efforts in more communities.”

“Our administration is grateful for the input and expertise from school superintendents, mental health experts and law enforcement officials that helped us develop a package of school safety initiatives,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “It is crucial we continue to give Massachusetts schools the resources and tools they need.”

The grant funding was included in a Fiscal Year 2018 supplemental budget proposed by the Governor and passed by the Legislature. The budget bill signed by the Governor also included $7.5 million in additional aid for school districts to hire social workers, mental health counselors and psychologists.

In July 2018, Governor Baker proposed wide-ranging school safety legislation that included funds to support school safety, strengthen mental health programs in schools and address substance misuse prevention, education and screening for students. Additionally, Governor Baker joined Lt. Governor Polito, Education Secretary James Peyser, Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, and former Public Safety and Security Secretary Daniel Bennett in August 2018 and met with school superintendents, principals, and local police chiefs to discuss school safety and what could be done locally to keep students safer.

“We must think about protecting our students and teachers from the threat of violence in the classroom,” said Secretary of Education James Peyser. “By strengthening student supports, as well as upgrading security measures, we aim to do more to keep Massachusetts students safe.”

“A safe, secure learning environment is essential to student success,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas Turco. “At a time when school violence is a major concern across the nation, these grants represent an important investment in children’s physical safety and educational development.”

“As a former superintendent and school counselor, I know the importance of getting additional dollars into both building improvements and student supports,” said Commissioner Jeff Riley. “We will continue to work with superintendents to help keep students safe.”

“We are honored to open our doors today in Framingham and to offer a warm greeting by our students and staff in celebration of this incredible investment,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Robert A. Tremblay. “Schools only become safe and secure places when our students feel that they belong. In addition to implementing the necessary infrastructure supports, we emphasize the importance of relationships so that our students feel connected to their peers and the adults in our schools.”

(Michael Flaherty)

KENNEDY RAISES OVER $400K IN ONE MONTH FOR SENATE RACE

KENNEDY RAISES OVER $400K IN ONE MONTH FOR SENATE RACE

Brings in average of $100k a week since opening Senate account, $650k total for quarter

Boston, MA --- Citing strong momentum from Congressman Joe Kennedy III’s announcement of his U.S. Senate run, Kennedy for Massachusetts announced that it had raised over $650,000 this third fundraising quarter. On average the campaign brought in $100,000 a week since Kennedy opened his Senate account at the end of August, raising over $400,000 in the past month.

Kennedy ended September with $4.2 million cash on hand. A previous recipient of corporate PAC money, Kennedy took the No Corporate PAC pledge in early September before getting in the Senate race. Additionally, he has called for a People’s Pledge to keep dark money out of the primary election.

“I’m humbled by all of the support we have received in the early days of this campaign, giving us the resources we need to travel across the Commonwealth and highlight the voices and places that our current system takes for granted and leaves behind,” said Congressman Kennedy. “From Boston to Springfield, Gloucester to Fall River, I look forward to earning the trust of voters across Massachusetts over the next several months.”

Since announcing his bid for Senate, Congressman Kennedy has prioritized showing up for the people and places that our government, policies and institutions have long let down. Over the past several weeks, he has visited food pantries, homeless shelters, community health centers, affordable housing complexes, and sat down with young men involved in the criminal justice system, immigrants, veterans, and local fishermen to champion the people he believes should be at the heart of the Commonwealth’s fight.

Elinor Ostrom
