ChinesePerformingArts.net,喬登廳票房617-585-1260。

Governor Baker Announces Expansion of Preschool Programs Through Public/Community-Based Partnership Tours New Classroom in Holyoke

Governor Baker Announces Expansion of Preschool Programs Through Public/Community-Based Partnership Tours New Classroom in Holyoke

HOLYOKE – Governor Charlie Baker today visited the Lt. Clayre P. Sullivan School in Holyoke to tour one of the 45 new preschool classrooms that are opening this school year through the Massachusetts Preschool Expansion Grant program.  Five cities received a combined total of over $14 million through a federal award to Massachusetts that is funding a year of high-quality preschool for 78 children in Holyoke and another 780 children across Boston, Lawrence, Lowell and Springfield.

“I am pleased to help welcome students to the new school year and highlight the expansion of the diverse early education and care system through this new pilot,” said Governor Charlie Baker.  “This program will help identify best practices and inform us of ways we can pave a seamless path forward to connect local public schools with non-profit pre-school programs.  The goal is to ensure that more children have access to the educational resources they need to put them on an early path to success, and achieve proficiency in reading by the end of the third grade.”

The five cities that are participating in the initiative have developed partnerships between their local public school district and community-based programs licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care, to expand the number of high-quality preschool classrooms serving 4-year-old children in their community.  The preschool programs are free for children whose families meet income criteria.  The Preschool Expansion Grant funds support high quality program offerings through required design elements such as:

     Inclusive full-day and full-year programming with low child-to-teacher ratios (10:1 or less);

Workforce development supports for educators, including individualized growth plans, joint professional development between the school district and community early education programs, and coaching and mentoring; and

Use of highly credentialed educators who are compensated at a rate comparable to public school district salaries.

"The Preschool Expansion Grant is supporting children's healthy development through an innovative, high-quality model of local partnerships," said Early Education and Care Commissioner Tom Weber.  "Holyoke and the other communities are aligning programs and education systems, leveraging new and existing resources, and employing research-based strategies to provide more children with a high-quality pre-k experience that will serve as a cornerstone for success in school and life."

Through the Preschool Expansion Grant, Holyoke Public Schools partnered with Valley Opportunity Council and Holyoke-Chicopee-Springfield Head Start to open a new preschool classroom in four of their schools.  These classes provide programming for the children from 8 to 10 hours per day.

"Students are the real beneficiaries of the collaboration that the Preschool Expansion Grant has fostered," said Massachusetts Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester.  "More high-quality preschools mean more students will be prepared for kindergarten, and that is particularly important in cities where families might not otherwise be able to access such opportunities."

Massachusetts applied for up to $60 million over four years under the federal Preschool Expansion Grant program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Education, and received its full request for $15 million in the first year of the grant.

DAVID ORTIZ OF THE BOSTON RED SOX NAMED AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DAVID ORTIZ OF THE BOSTON RED SOX NAMED AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox has been named American League Player of the Week for the week of September 7th-13th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network. Ortiz, who clubbed his 500th career home run on Saturday, led the Majors with a 1.111 slugging percentage last week, while pacing the AL with 20 total bases in five outings. “Big Papi” also ranked among league leaders in hitting (2nd, .444), on-base percentage (2nd, .545), and RBI (2nd, 9), and was tied for second among AL hitters with three home runs. The veteran slugger hit his 499th and 500th career homers in Saturday’s 10-4 victory at Tampa Bay, becoming the 27th player in Major League history to reach the 500 home run plateau. Ortiz joined countryman Albert Pujols (April 22, 2014) as the only players in history to reach the mark with a multi-home run game. He became the fourth player to hit his 500th career blast in a Red Sox uniform, joining Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx (9/24/40) and Ted Williams (6/17/60), as well as former teammate Manny Ramirez (5/31/08). Ortiz is now one of four players with 500- or-more career home runs and three World Series championships under his belt, joining Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Reggie Jackson. Ortiz also homered in Wednesday’s contest against Toronto at Fenway Park, collecting three RBI in the 10-4 victory over the Division leaders. Ortiz, who now has 34 homers on the season, has reached the 30-homer threshold for the ninth time in his career. With 95 RBI, he is just five shy of his ninth 100-RBI campaign. This is his sixth career Player of the Week honor and his first since the week of May 30-June 5, 2011. Other noteworthy performances last week included Ortiz’ Boston teammate Mookie Betts (.429, 6 R, 12 H, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .679 SLG, .467 OBP); Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas (.292, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .542 SLG); Toronto’s Ben Revere (.407, 7 R, 11 H, 4 RBI, 3 SB, .467 OBP); Colby Lewis (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 4 SO, 9.0 IP) of the Texas Rangers; and Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 0.60 ERA, 17 SO, 15.0 IP) of the New York Yankees. In recognition of his American League Player of the Week Award, David Ortiz will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com. # # #

AAWPI state house fellowship accepts application

Asian-American Women's Political Initiative (AAWPI)
State House Fellowship Program
Spring 2016
http://www.aawpi.org http://www.facebook.com/AAWPI
APPLICATION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015
Are you active in campus organizations? Do you volunteer in the larger community? Do you want to build leadership skills that will help you make change for our communities? Do you want to be a part of changing the face of government?
As the only program of its kind in the country, the Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative’s (AAWPI’s) State House Fellowship Program provides Asian-American women with an empowering opportunity to combine community activism with state policymaking through a part-time internship at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. The fellowship also includes interactive trainings and issue briefings led by well-known civic leaders and leaders in government. Unique to the program are discussions around Asian-American women identity and issues affecting the Asian-American community and Asian-American women. Trainings and briefings are conducted through an Asian-American community lens, making connections between policymaking and our communities. The 2016 State House Fellows will be AAWPI’s seventh annual cohort. Featured in Boston Magazine, the fellowship seeks to cultivate and mentor the next generation of leaders and advocates in the Asian-American community.
Program Overview
AAWPI State House Fellows are to commit a minimum of 12 hours per week to the program beginning February 1, 2016 through the end of May 2016. The 7th annual State House Fellowship includes the following components:
  •   Orientation training weekend on Saturday, January 30th and Sunday, January 31st.
  •   A 16-week internship placement with a Massachusetts legislator, beginning the week of
February 1st through May 20th. Duties range from constituent services to helping to analyze the fiscal year budget. Fellows are responsible for making sure that their schedules will permit them to intern at least ten hours within State House office hours (9am-5pm), Monday through Friday at the State House in Boston, MA. A majority of internship hours must be spent interning Monday through Thursday.

  •   Biweekly, 2-hour, in-person AAWPI fellowship trainings every other Saturday or Sunday throughout their internship. Dates are as follows: February 13/14, February 27/28, March 12/13, March 26/27, April 9/10, April 30/May 1. Briefing topics include: the legislative and budget process, campaigns 101, press relations, hands-on fundraising, and issues affecting the Asian-American community (including mental health, domestic violence and health disparities).
  •   A fundraising requirement that will help sustain the pipeline of up-and-coming Asian- American women leaders and next year’s fellowship program. Fellows will receive fundraising training and support to help meet their fundraising goals. This has proven to be a great opportunity for fellows to develop and practice essential professional skills through this process.
  •   Mentorship matches with an alumna of the program who will serve as an additional resource to each fellow during the fellowship experience, and with a working professional in the community who share similar career interests as the fellow. Several mentorship matches have resulted in long-lasting relationships past the set fellowship dates and have strengthened the local Asian-American women community.
  •   A community-based project, designed and implemented by the fellows as a group, that engages and empowers more Asian-American women through advocacy and education. Past fellows and community mentors will provide support and guidance in developing and implementing the project. For example, a past fellowship class partnered with ASPIRE (Asian Sisters Participating in Reaching Excellence) to organize and host a civic engagement workshop for the high school girls in ASPIRE’s Youth Leadership Program.
Fellows will each receive a $500 stipend. Recipients of federal work-study may be eligible to redeem their work-study award through this fellowship instead of the program stipend. If applicable, please indicate your interest in using your work-study on the cover page of your application. Past fellows have also arranged to receive academic credit through the fellowship. AAWPI will cover the cost of the January training weekend and program materials throughout the fellowship.

For those in school, students of all majors are encouraged to apply. Candidates must live or attend school in Massachusetts.
