MAYOR WU AND BLACK MALE ADVANCEMENT AWARD $500,000 IN GRANTS TO 63 COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORTING BLACK MEN AND BOYS ACROSS BOSTON NEIGHBORHOODS

Community empowerment grants aimed at building stronger network across Boston to support and connect Black men and boys to programming and resources

BOSTON - Monday, April 14, 2025 - Mayor Michelle Wu and the Office of Black Male Advancement (BMA) today announced the awardees for the 2025 Community Empowerment Grants. These grants invest $500,000 to deepen the work of community-based organizations (CBOs) providing a positive impact for communities in the City of Boston. With the help of these grants, organizations will be able to expand their work and strengthen their services throughout the city’s neighborhoods. This grant cycle in 2025 builds off of the tremendous impact in 2024, where over 15,000 residents citywide benefited from supports through this program.

“We're committed to supporting community organizations that empower Black men and boys across our City,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “These grants support and uplift organizations who are already deeply invested in their communities and doing critical work every day across neighborhoods. I'm grateful to the Office of Black Male Advancement for their critical work to ensure that Boston is a city for everyone.”

“The Community Empowerment grants will provide organizations that have a proven track-record with the financial investment and technical assistance to deepen their work,” said Frank Farrow, Executive Director of the Office of Black Male Advancement. “The Office of Black Male Advancement looks forward to collaborating with the awardees and are excited to see the positive impact they continue to have across the city.”

"This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring that Black men and boys in Boston have access to the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they deserve,” said Mariangely Solis Cervera, Chief of Equity and Inclusion. “By supporting these organizations, we are strengthening the networks that empower and uplift communities across our city."

The Office of Black Male Advancement Community Empowerment Grants prioritized organizations that expand one of the following seven focus areas:

  • Mentoring and Out-of-School Time: providing quality mentoring, literacy and out-of-school time programs when and where they are needed, offering developmentally-appropriate learning environments that support social emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Youth and Young Adult Pathways: providing educational and career pathways for youth and young adults navigating their own course to economic prosperity.
  • Housing Mobility: providing a continuum of housing opportunities, resources, and supports that are effectively resulting in pathways to affordable housing and homeownership.
  • Economic Inclusion and Wealth Building: supporting individuals to experience financial empowerment and economic mobility.
  • Workforce Training and Development: helping unemployed and underemployed individuals attain livable wage jobs and helping businesses with training for employees to support a pipeline of skilled workers.
  • Fatherhood Engagement: supporting fatherhood education, case management, and peer-to-peer support to strengthen positive father-child interaction, improve social and economic outcomes for fathers and their families and improve healthy relationships.

慈濟劍橋服務站為青年、耆英搭橋 徐敬豪介紹「回憶對話板」

               (Boston Orange

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES 2025 CIVIC SUMMIT

The Civic Summit 2025: Be the Change, aims to empower civic leaders dedicated to making a positive impact in Boston

BOSTON - Friday, April 11, 2025 - Today, Mayor Michelle Wu announced the Civic Summit 2025, a full day event focused on uniting neighbors, civic leaders, and non-profit advocates. The Civic Summit, first hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing in 2024, will return on Saturday, June 7 at Boston University Questrom School of Business. The theme for this year’s Summit is “Be the Change,” which reflects the City’s continued focus on community-driven progress and making Boston a home for everyone. Building on the success of the 2024 event, Civic Summit 2025 will feature a panel discussion on the theme, a networking lunch, and breakout sessions led by subject matter experts, including faculty from Boston University.  Registration and a full agenda for the free event will be released on Wednesday, April 30 on boston.gov/civic-summit-2025.

Mayor Michelle Wu will join the Civic Summit for a featured fireside chat, this year in conversation with Dart Adams, a Boston-based journalist, researcher, lecturer, and host of the podcasts Dart Against Humanity and Boston Legends

“The Civic Summit is a powerful reminder of our commitment to strengthening connections and continuing to be a welcoming city for all,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “By having this unique platform to spark meaningful conversations with our community members, we’re able to learn, share, and continuously drive this collaborative effort, building a better future together.”

“It’s exciting to bring the Civic Summit back,” said Nathalia Benitez-Perez, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing. “Last year’s Summit was an incredible moment of connection, and the positive feedback we received from community members inspired us to start planning this year’s event as soon as the last one ended. Throughout the year, we’ve had the opportunity to nurture the relationships and momentum built at the Civic Summit, and our team has been committed to making this year's event bigger and better. We’re also thrilled to continue our partnership with Boston University, this year with the generous support of the Questrom School of Business. Their belief in the Civic Summit’s vision has been instrumental in bringing this event to life.”

The Office of Civic Organizing is proud to continue working with Anais Summer Day, a woman-owned event planning company led by Anais Ramos, who returns for a second year as lead event planner. Courtney Boston, Founder and CEO of HERVISION Media and Co-founder of WWOC Media, will serve as the lead host. The event is once again supported by valued partner Boston University.

“Boston University is proud to partner once again with the City of Boston in hosting this year's Civic Summit at the Questrom School of Business,” said Dr. Melissa L. Gilliam, President of Boston University. “Questrom’s dynamic environment of innovation, leadership, and collaborative thinking provides an ideal setting for meaningful dialogue. We proudly support Mayor Wu’s vision for an engaged and inclusive community and look forward to empowering conversations that will help shape a vibrant and equitable future for Boston.”

The Civic Summit is an event designed to create a space where both emerging and experienced civic leaders share knowledge, build relationships, and inspire collective action. In its first year, the Summit reached its capacity of 200 attendees in under 12 hours. In response to the interest, the City has changed its location to expand this year’s capacity to welcome up to 300 participants.

“Last year’s Civic Summit was a unique and powerful event that brought together engaged residents from across the city to inspire one another, learn about civic involvement, and strengthen connections. I kept running into people from different parts of the city, some I hadn’t seen in years and others I had just met the week before. We sparked new conversations about how we could collaborate to improve access and opportunities in our neighborhoods,” said Eric Leslie, Founder and Lead Organizer of Union Capital and a Civic Summit 2024 speaker. “I left with business cards, handouts featuring new resources, and innovative ideas to bring back to my organization. I’m excited for this year's Civic Summit, which will be an even bigger version, offering more chances to learn, connect, and enhance the civic ties that support our community’s health, well-being, and opportunities.”

“The Civic Summit was greatly needed in the City of Boston. It provided an excellent opportunity to learn about various organizations dedicated to making our city a thought leader,” said Danielle Johnson, Founder and CEO, SPARK FM. “From the fireside chat to the open discussions, the event fostered community and fellowship, allowing us to learn from one another.”

“We need the Civic Summit now more than ever,” said Brianna Millor, Chief of the Community Engagement Cabinet. “This community gathering will be one of the many impactful spaces our city offers to constituents to be in good company to discuss how Boston will be the change we hope to see beyond our neighborhoods.”

The Civic Summit is free and open to the public with registration. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. For more information visit boston.gov/civicsummit2025

The Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing is committed to collaborative partnerships and programs that encourage proactive community engagement, awareness, and service in our neighborhoods. MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES 2025 NEIGHBORHOOD COFFEE HOUR SERIES

BOSTON - Friday, April 11, 2025 Mayor Michelle Wu, the Office of Neighborhood Services, and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department today announced the dates and locations for the 2025 Neighborhood Coffee Hour Series in partnership with Dunkin’® and Star Market. The annual coffee hours will kick off in parks citywide starting April 29 and running until June 18. Mayor Wu’s Neighborhood Coffee Hours offer a unique opportunity to speak directly with the Mayor and staff from City departments about City services and resident concerns. Through personal conversations, and a suggestion box at each site, residents can share how the City of Boston can improve parks, public areas, and City services.

“One of my favorite annual traditions is our neighborhood park hours to get City Hall out of City Hall into our neighborhoods, where residents can connect with City staff and share their feedback so that we can continue building a better home for all,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “I look forward to hearing from all of our community members and enjoying our community green spaces together.”

Leadership and staff from the Community Engagement Cabinet will attend each coffee hour. Community members will have the opportunity to meet their neighborhood liaisons, who will deliver remarks focused on City improvements in each neighborhood. This includes but is not limited to information on the number of resolved 311 cases, street repairs, and the City's investments in housing, youth services, local businesses, and the arts. In its third year, the City will release the Community Input Survey to gather questions and feedback from constituents ahead of coffee hours. The Mayor and City leaders use these surveys to address neighborhood concerns at the individual coffee hours to ensure residents are informed on local issues they care about.

“Our Cabinet will have representation from each department including Boston 311, SPARK Boston, Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing’s City Hall on the Go Truck, and the City’s Senior Advisor and Head of Faith-Based Initiatives, Will Dickerson, who engages with faith leaders in the neighborhoods. These departments represent the diverse communities in our City and will be present to help with any concerns or questions,” said Brianna Millor, Chief of the Community Engagement Cabinet.

“This year, the Office of Neighborhood Services is excited to deepen our role in organizing Neighborhood Coffee Hours with the Mayor,” said Lindsey Santana, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services. “I encourage residents from all neighborhoods to join us, invite a family member or friend to meet your neighborhood liaison, connect with cultural advisors, and enjoy an iced coffee from our sponsor, along with a free plant from the Parks and Recreation Department.”

A neighborhood staple known for bringing the community together over a cup of coffee, Dunkin’ is back to fuel the conversation with iced coffee and donuts. Dunkin’ will also provide lawn game activities for attendees, gift card giveaways, and the opportunity for residents to win a raffle prize. Free flowering plants will be provided by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, while supplies last. Fresh fruit will be provided by Star Market.

“Boston’s parks are more than just green spaces—they are the heart of our communities, where neighbors connect, and ideas take root. Hosting the Neighborhood Coffee Hours in our public parks underscores their vital role in fostering community, resilience, and well-being,” said Brian Swett, Chief of Climate Officer for the Environment, Energy, and Open Space Cabinet. “These gatherings provide an opportunity to hear directly from residents about how we can continue to enhance and protect our open spaces, ensuring they remain welcoming, vibrant, and climate-resilient for generations to come.”

All coffee hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If it rains, there is an alternate rain location for each event. Visit boston.gov/coffee-hours for more information. The full schedule of Mayor Wu’s 2025 Neighborhood Coffee Hours is as follows:
