TREASURER GOLDBERG ANNOUNCES FALL LOCATIONS OF WOMEN'S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT SERIES 

BOSTON - Treasurer Goldberg has announced the fall dates and locations for the Women's Economic Empowerment Series. These free workshops, hosted by the Treasurer's Office of Economic Empowerment (OEE), target issues around women's economic disparities, including the gender wage gap, money management, retirement and investment strategies for women. 

The upcoming workshop dates and locations are as follows:

"Women face unique challenges when it comes to financial security," said Treasurer Goldberg. "These programs provide critical information that gives women the skills they need to be successful in today's economy. When we invest in women, we empower them to invest in themselves."

"Through our Citizens Helping Citizens Manage Money partnership with the Women's Economic Empowerment Series, women are gaining the confidence and tools they need to budget, save and take charge of their personal finances." 

  

Women, on average, earn less than men over the course of their working lives because of the wage gap and are more likely to leave the workforce to care for family members. This series of workshops aims to bring economic security and stability to women and to give them the tools to reach their full financial potential. 

The programs will include financial education workshops and salary negotiation training. Refreshments will be provided to participants. For more specifics on the event details, programmatic content, and to register please visit the program website. The Women's Economic Empowerment Series is made possible by a grant from Citizens Bank. Additional workshops will be scheduled in November and December. 

  

On day one, Treasurer Goldberg created OEE to implement a range of economic empowerment initiatives including closing the gender wage gap, increasing access to financial education, improving college affordability, and investing in STEM careers and education. The Harvard College China Forum, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and the Altru Institute present Better Angels, the soon to be released documentary that offers a compelling and unique perspective on the China - US relationship.

The showing is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018, at 6 PM, at the Yenching Institute Lecture Hall, followed by Q&A with Director Malcom Clarke, and Producers William Mundell and Yi Han.

Directed by two-time academy award winner Malcolm Clarke, Better Angels shatters the myths that Americans have about China and that China has about America… exploring the stakes and raising the expectations of what this crucial relationship can be.

While recent events in the China - US relationship have clearly givenBetter Angels an even greater urgency and significance, Better Angels is designed to help the Chinese and America people become stakeholders in what is arguably the world’s most important bilateral relationship. The film anchors the Altru Institute's China Initiative, an effort to foster greater understanding between US and China by connecting future leaders in both countries at America’s leading Colleges and Universities.

Better Angels examines the proposition that America and China can, and indeed must gradually overcome economic rivalries, ideological challenges and cultural differences to achieve an historic accord never before seen between superpowers.

               (Boston Orange 周菊子波士頓報導)波士頓僑界10月7日晚在帝苑大酒樓席開51桌，慶祝中華民國107歲生日。頒獎表揚五有特色遊行隊伍，還別開生面安排You & Me與劍橋合唱團兩個來自台灣年輕一代樂團演唱。

               今年的紐英崙全僑慶祝中華民國國慶餐會，仍由紐英崙中華總會主辦，由國民黨波士頓分部旗隊進場，陳余寶愛演唱美國國歌，陳家驊，張韻蘭，歐宏偉演唱中華民國國歌，拉開序幕。

               紐英崙中華總會會長陳毓禮在致詞時表示，因為中華民國是個支持自由，民主，法治的國家。他參加慶祝中華民國生日活動已55年，每年的變化，都在他眼底走過。他很高興今年有500多人出席餐會，希望來年有更多人參加，更多年輕人加入行列。

               波士頓經文處長徐佑典以國語致詞，感謝所有參與者的出席，更感謝各籌辦活動僑團分頭努力，才能讓這活動有這麼大的聲勢。十月六日上午的有那麼多人願意一大清早趕到華埠牌樓，為支持中華民國來遊行，尤其讓他感動，深覺”中華民國有您(各位)真好”。

               徐佑典表示，他曾經派駐華府，這是他第一次參加波士頓僑界的慶祝雙十活動，發現波士頓不但在科技文化上都是創新之地，就連活動安排都是”city of innovation”。他看到許多團體在遊行中表現的活力與台灣特色，讓人覺得這是一個非常特別的國慶日。

               徐佑典在會上還頒發了國慶遊行最有特色獎給五個團體，包括波士頓國民黨，波士頓榮光會，全美亞裔婦女會麻省分會，紐英崙客家鄉親會，波士頓元極舞聯誼會。

               當晚在餐會正式開始前，有黎雯，譚達兒，譚玉秀，馮台甲，曾兆漢，陳余寶愛，吳萍萍，金杏濱，楊哲修等人唱卡拉OK表演，唱了”萬水千山總是情”，”沉默是金”，”抱緊眼前人”，”Could I have this dance”，”愛拚才會贏”等歌曲。

晚宴開始後，國民黨波士頓分部由常委張韻蘭率領，連高齡90餘的前常委李伍綺蓮都參加的合唱團，演唱”藍天白雲”，”綠島小夜曲”。

               接下來是You & Me樂隊時間，由黃怡菁，黃瑞閔主持，吉他黃崇校，中提琴蔡呈御，鼓手屠澤寬，鈴鼓，沙凌陳瑩璇伴奏，朱慧芹，陳薇如，劉雙州，林靜，黃立雅，湯立熙等人從清唱”夜來香”，到演唱”我的心裡只有你沒有他”，”好好愛我”，”掌聲響起”等歌曲，還邀請全體嘉賓合唱”中華民國頌”，”梅花”。

MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES NEW MEASURES TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN DEVELOPMENT, PREVENT DISPLACEMENT

Policies promote public land for public good

BOSTON - Sunday, October 7, 2018 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced that the Department of Neighborhood Development (DND) and the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) will include criteria to promote diversity and inclusion and prevent displacement in all Requests for Proposals (RFPs) released for public land moving forward. By encouraging the participation of people of color, women, and Minority and Women Business Enterprises (M/WBEs), the policy will foster a more inclusive workforce throughout the City of Boston. "In order to create a Boston that is equitable for all, we must call on our partners in the development and business community to join us in increasing opportunities for our residents," said Mayor Walsh. "These steps build on the measures we have taken to remove barriers that hinder individuals from reaching their full potential based on their background, race, or gender, while ensuring that new development on public land happens without displacement."   Much of this policy language was written in collaboration with the community during the PLAN: Dudley Square process, which has led to the recent release of four RFPs for redevelopment by DND. The BPDA piloted the diversity and inclusion language in the RFP released for Parcel 12 in Chinatown in 2017. The diversity and inclusion policy asks respondents to RFPs for public land to set forth a Diversity and Inclusion Plan that will establish an outreach program aimed at creating increased opportunities for people of color, women, and for M/BEs to participate in the proposed development project. Proposals should include the extent to which the proponent plans to include meaningful participation in the fields of construction, design, development, financing, operations, and ownership. In addition, respondents to RFPs will be required to submit plans to mitigate displacement from development, which will help current residents remain in their communities, afford housing, and find pathways to economic opportunity. Under the Walsh Administration, the City of Boston has taken several steps to create a more inclusive workforce. In 2016, Mayor Walsh increased the employment standards for the Boston Residents Jobs Policy (BRJP) and Boston Employment Commission (BEC) as part of an ongoing effort to create more employment opportunities for Boston residents, persons of color and women. The new standards address the need to create more inclusive employment opportunities during the largest construction boom in Boston's history.   Today's announcement builds on the steps the Walsh Administration has taken to combat displacement. In 2016, Mayor Walsh created the Office of Housing Stability to prevent displacement in Boston's neighborhoods, offering support and case management to residents in a housing crisis, creating and distributing information for tenants and landlords, and creating and advocating for new policies and legislation to prevent displacement. The recently released update to the Mayor's Housing Plan establishes a goal of supporting the purchase of 1,000 rental housing units from the speculative market and income-restricting them through an expanded Acquisition Opportunity Program. These units are part of the 15,820 affordable unit production plan.

(Boston Orange 周菊子波士頓報導)波士頓僑界10月6日慶祝中華民國107歲，50餘僑團，近千名僑胞、留學生參加遊行，升旗典禮，從華埠牌樓出發，沿華盛頓街走到市政府廣場，一路旗幟飄揚，樂音鼓聲交錯，聲勢壯大。

駐波士頓台北經濟文化辦事處處長徐佑典致詞時以流暢英語感謝主辦單位紐英崙中華總會的領導力，也點名感謝陳毓禮，紐英崙中華公所主席陳家驊，以及余麗媖，雷國輝等人。

徐佑典表示，這是他在波士頓第一次參加雙十遊行及升旗，看到華埠僑團，大波士頓華人僑胞支持的熱情，十分感動。他身為自己也是這社區的一份子感到極為驕傲。他指出，

107年前，國父孫中山帶領革命，改變了中國人的命運與歷史，今天，中華民國在台灣選出了有史以來的首位女總統，也讓台灣被世人認為是實施民主的成功故事。在波士頓，他們的責任是向外廣為傳播台灣的成就與善意。

今年高齡86歲的紐英崙中華總會會長陳毓禮在致詞中表示，55年前他就開始參加慶祝雙十活動了，那時候也有遊行，後來一度中斷，近年才又恢復，一年比一年熱鬧。他很高興看到很多年輕人也來參加這活動，希望明年更盛大。

波士頓今年的慶祝雙十遊行，由紐英崙中華總會主辦，早於兩週前，就在華埠街道掛出中美旗幟，然後在遊行日前一晚，遊行出發地點的必珠街又加掛了兩面巨幅青天白日滿地紅國旗和美國星條旗，整條街氣氛十足。

由於遊行隊伍都各自拉出寫有社團名稱的布條，橫幅，中華民俗藝術工作坊，洪清體育會，安良醒獅隊，華林派少林功夫學校都派出舞龍，舞獅隊伍與鼓隊，五彩繽紛的龍獅和旗幟，不但十分搶眼，更是沿途路人搶鏡頭的主要對象。

遊行隊伍中，紐英崙客家鄉親會男的戴斗笠，女的包頭巾，打扮成採茶姑娘；波士頓國民黨幾乎全穿上深藍色印有KMT字樣T恤，中美國旗與黨旗前導，淺藍色布幡隊隨行；波士頓榮光會成員全穿上黃色背心，波士頓華裔退伍軍人會全穿著銀藍色夾克，都非常的有特色。全美華裔婦女會麻省分會由黎雯率數名會員穿上輕紗古裝，紮髻戴頭飾，更是與眾不同。

經文處教育組組長陳幗珍指出，今年參加升旗典禮的學生比往年多很多，不但有哈佛台灣同學會，波士頓大學大學部台灣同學會，新英格蘭學聯也組成龐大祝賀團來參加遊行。在哈佛大學附屬的麻省總醫院做博士後的林致中最是用心，不但穿上以青天白日滿地紅顏色製作的T恤，還戴上藍白紅三色的捲毛假髮，非常搶眼。

波士頓僑教中心主任歐宏偉也特地請僑教中心志工鄭玉春等人穿上同款T恤，組成志工團，加入遊行行列。

在波士頓市府廣場前的升旗儀式，由陳余寶愛，金杏濱擔任司儀。中華民俗藝術工作坊表演”龍騰九霄慶雙十”後，石家孝，張韻蘭，陳家驊，陳文浩等人在劍橋合唱團演唱國歌聲中，把青天白日滿地紅國旗，搖升在波士頓市府廣場的旗桿上。

慶祝活動的文藝表演，由中華民俗藝術工作坊的"台灣有您真好”拉開序幕，陸續有中華藝術協會傳統中國舞蹈團的”祈福”，波士頓元極舞聯誼會的”春滿人間”等，最後在劍橋合唱團與出席僑胞大合唱”中華民國頌”，”梅花”聲中落幕。
