長者多元文化聯盟以耆英母語討論老人失憶症

中華耆英會參與的長者多元文化聯盟(Multicultural Coalition on Aging)上週六(725日)舉辦“老人失憶症(Alzheimer)”會議,依語言分不同小組,讓出席者以各自母語更暢順無阻的了解防治資訊。
            波士頓市長馬丁華殊(Martin Walsh)當日特地到水城(Watertown)出席這以“同一訊息,許多聲音(One Message – Many voices)”為名的會議,向大約二百五十名出席者強調,一般人稱為“老年失憶症”的阿爾茨海默氏症,可以預防,只要及時治療,就可減少對個人及親人的傷害。
            馬丁華殊透露,他祖母當年也染患了老年失憶症,讓人十分不忍心。如今波士頓市約有一萬人受此病痛折磨,而這數目還將隨著波士頓市的人口老化倍增,確保波士頓人了解這一病症,知道如何預防,治療,因此更為重要。
            由波市府老人局和長者多元文化聯盟合作舉辦的這“老年失憶症”會議,中文組部分,由中華耆英會和麻省總醫院合作,安排了三場講座,請來都在哈佛大學醫學院神經系做助理教授的牛津大學遺傳學博士李愛榮,Drexel大學博士張燦,依序講談“阿爾茨海默氏症”的風險因素,預防與治療,遺傳基因研究進展。
        “阿爾茨海默氏症”是一種大腦神經細胞死亡造成的神經性疾病,因德國醫生“阿爾茨海默”最早描述而得名,最常見的是老年痴呆症,最初症狀常是被人認為年紀大了普通健忘,但患者病情會發展到在日常生活中喪失認知,決策能力,甚至出現性情改變,行為困難,最終導致死亡。
            全美國約有四百萬人被診斷為患有此病,多半是65歲以上老人家,目前是全美十大死因中的第六位。美國每年直接或間接用於護理“阿爾茨海默氏症”的費用已達到100億美元。每名患者平均花費174,000元。在20022008年間,統計數據顯示,大病份疾病死亡率下降,老年痴呆症死亡率卻上升66%,相關單位因此更積極的推廣防治方法,
            李愛榮與張燦指出,正常老化和老年失憶症患者的區別方法包括,忘記許久不見朋友或同事姓名,忘記關水龍頭,丟了眼鏡,鑰匙等屬於正常的老化,連家人都不認得,已經做好了飯卻忘記吃,把熨斗放進了冰箱,在自己家附近迷路等則是老年失憶了。
            他們解釋各種症狀後,指出目前美國聯邦藥物局(FDA)批准了四種提高記憶力,簡婉老年失憶症病情的藥物,包括商品名為Cognex的他克林(Tacrine),商品名為Aricept的多耐脉奇(Donepezil),商品名為Exelon的利凡斯的明(rivastigmine),商品名為Reminyl的加蘭他敏(galantaime)。
            由於染患老年失憶症的因素,除了年齡,家族史,遺傳基因之外,包括頭部外傷,心腦血管病,生活方式,化學物質,身體其他疾病,精神障礙,他們建議人們從40歲就開始預防,保持良好心態,適度做運動,多用腦,多看書,多學新事物,多和朋友聊天,飲食要均衡,防止腦外傷,及時治療高血壓,心臟病,中風,糖尿病,高膽固醇等疾病。
            中華耆英會行政主任梅伍銀寬,副主任張昆,白禮頓樓主任梅麗梨,以及新上任的麻州老人事務辦公室首長Alice Bonner博士,當天都特地出席,支持活動。

波士頓可能棄辦2024奧運

波士頓市長馬丁華殊今早召開記者會,直指美國奧委會催促他簽約,但他認為在不確定波士頓承辦2024奧運的實際財務概況,無法確知波士頓納稅人不會受超支牽累之前,不宜倉促簽約。

Connection Center Will Help Out-of-School, Out-of-Work 20-24 Year Olds Find Success
BOSTON - Monday, July 27, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today joined the Boston Opportunity Youth Collaborative to launch the Connection Center, which will serve as a one-stop resource to help Boston high school graduates, 20-24 years old, who are unemployed and out of school with no postsecondary degree. The Connection Center, located inside the Ruggles MBTA station, will work to reach out to these young adults and refer them to education, training and employment opportunities throughout the Greater Boston. 

"Too many of our young people are still struggling because of competition for jobs and for college," said Mayor Walsh. "For the future of our City, we must create opportunities to prepare our residents for our workforce. The Connection Center will help young people find direction and the road to success. I thank the Obama Administration, the Boston Opportunity Youth Collaboration and all of our national and local partners who stand committed with us to help our young people and our City move forward." 

The Connection Center is a local option within the national movement to promote opportunities and pathways for the 6.7 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24 in the United States who are neither enrolled in school nor participating in the labor market. These young people are often referred to as Opportunity Youth. The "opportunity" is the chance to include their talents and contributions in a labor market that needs them as an entire older generation begins to retire.

Based on the U.S. Census Bureau's 2011-2013 American Community Surveys, there are 9,097 of these opportunity youth in Boston. Among them, there are 4,747 young adults who graduated from high school without connecting with the labor market or further education and training.  

The City is dedicated to creating equal access to opportunities throughout Boston, and inspiring young people to stay in school and continue their education, whether through higher education or workforce training programs, post-High School. The Boston Public Schools has cut its dropout rate by more than half over the last decade. Inspired by this success and building on the Mayor's local efforts for President Barack Obama's My Brother's Keeper Initiative, the City is giving added focus to the large numbers of young adults who graduate without a connection to career opportunities.

The Boston Opportunity Youth Collaborative (OYC) is a cross-sector coalition, convened by the Boston Opportunity Agenda and the Boston Private Industry Council, with more than 70 member organizations and agencies. Stakeholders include the Mayor's Office, Boston Public Schools, philanthropy, local colleges, universities and community-based organizations.

The coalition came together to develop and implement a plan for connecting opportunity youth with pathways to career and financial independence. The OYC's final plan included a Connection Center as the first point of entry to community-based programs that would support young people in pursuing community college, job training and employment. Connection Center coaches will help young people navigate these pathways, which often prove challenging to those unfamiliar with the requirements of college, training or work. 

These coaches will engage young people, assess their needs and make supported referrals to the right programs. Participating organizations include College Bound Dorchester and Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (college bridging and completion programs), Jewish Vocational Service (pharmacy technician training), the Asian American Civic Association (employment services), as well as Year Up, YouthBuild and other agencies.

The OYC is one of seven community collaboratives across the country receiving three-year grants to implement their plans. The awards were made by Jobs for the Future and the Aspen Institute Forum for Community Service as part of the Opportunity Works initiative, funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service through its Social Innovation Fund (SIF). Local match funding is being provided by the Barr Foundation, the Boston Foundation, the Hyams Foundation and the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee. The OYC is contracting with X-Cel Education, a dynamic nonprofit organization, to operate the center in space provided by Northeastern University, the MBTA and JRI/STRIVE Boston.

The Boston Opportunity Youth Collaborative is a group of stakeholders who have come together around creating stronger systems to serve opportunity youth in Boston. First convened in 2013 by the Boston Private Industry Council and the Boston Opportunity Agenda, OYC members include the Mayor's Office, local community-based organizations, the Boston Public Schools, philanthropy, city and state agencies and postsecondary institutions. NCAA Champion Emma Bates To Join B.A.A. High Performance Team

The 12-time All American is the newest addition to the B.A.A.’s elite athlete group, coached by Terrence Mahon

BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston Athletic Association is pleased to announce that former NCAA 10,000 meter champion Emma Bates has joined the B.A.A. High Performance Team, coached by Terrence Mahon. Bates, who graduated from Boise State University this spring, brings great experience to the B.A.A., which is sponsored by adidas.

"I am overjoyed to be given the opportunity to run for the B.A.A. Knowing the strong history behind the Boston Athletic Association and the people involved made the decision easy,” said Bates. “I am looking forward to making the B.A.A. and the rest of Boston proud to support me leading into the Olympic year of 2016, and beyond."

Originally from Elk River, Minnesota, Bates earned twelve All American honors while racing for the Boise State Broncos. In 2014, she won the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships title for 10,000 meters, clocking a time of 32:32.35. Her win was the first national track and field title in Boise State school history.

"We are very happy to welcome Emma to the B.A.A.," said Mahon, who joined the B.A.A. in 2013 in preparation for the B.A.A. High Performance group’s launch. "Emma is one of the top athletes coming out of the NCAA ranks, and she has excelled in both track and cross country. We are excited to develop her professional career here in Boston as part of the B.A.A. team."

This year, Bates capped off her collegiate career with a pair of top ten finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing eighth in the 5,000 meters and tenth in the 10,000 meters. Bates finished on the podium in her final NCAA Cross Country race, taking third overall in last year’s championships.

While still in college, Bates earned valuable experience representing Team USA internationally. In January, she sported the USA vest at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country meet in Scotland, finishing sixth against a field of top runners from around the world.

At the USA National Track and Field Championships in Oregon last month, Bates was 11th place in the 10,000 meters.

With the B.A.A. High Performance team, Bates joins a strong group of athletes specializing in distances ranging from 800 meters through the half marathon. Included on the team are three-time Olympian Jen Rhines, Katie Matthews, Elaina Balouris, Juliet Bottorff, Sarah Pagano, Emily Lipari, and Cydney Ross.

The objective of the B.A.A.’s High Performance group of athletes is to support American runners on their way towards making international teams, with the goal of competing at an Olympic and World Championships level. 

"As a team, we eagerly look forward to Emma's transition from collegiate to professional runner as part of the B.A.A.’s High Performance team," said Mahon.

Bates will compete alongside her teammates wearing the B.A.A.'s traditional yellow adidas uniform, complete with the iconic unicorn logo.

Task Force works to maximize efficiency of Massachusetts’ military installations

BOSTON – Governor Charlie Baker today named Christopher Willenborg to serve as Executive Director of the Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force, created in 2012, to promote and strengthen the Commonwealth’s six military installations and their impact on local communities and economies at the federal, state and local level.

“Massachusetts’ military installations are highly regarded here at home and throughout the ranks of the U.S. Armed Services,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “From the Natick Soldier Systems Center to advances in cybersecurity at Hanscom Air Force Base, the Commonwealth and its service members are critical to both our local economies and communities and our national defense, and will remain a priority for the Lt. Governor and I throughout our administration. I look forward to Chris Willenborg’s service in this important role as one of the Commonwealth’s chief advocates for our military families.”

Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28th, Governor Baker is traveling to Washington, DC to meet with top defense officials, including U.S. Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Jack Reed (D-RI) who are members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services overseeing the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, and Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations and Environment John Conger who will play a key role in BRAC for the U.S. Department of Defense.

“The Commonwealth’s six military installations serve as critical defense infrastructure, and generate substantial economic activity in the surrounding region,” said Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development (EOHED) Secretary Jay Ash. “Mr. Willenborg’s management experience in the airport industry will be an asset to the administration as we work to retain a robust defense and an expanding economy.”

Housed within the Office of the Governor and supported by EOHED and MassDevelopment, the Task Force coordinates among the Commonwealth’s six military facilities to maximize their efficiency.          

“I am excited to work with the Baker-Polito Administration to leverage the unique military assets Massachusetts has to offer,” said Christopher Willenborg. “I look forward to working with the military leadership; federal, state, and local legislative delegations; and industry stakeholders to ensure that our bases maximize their national security and economic impact to the Commonwealth.”

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is home to six military installations with over $13 billion in total economic activity and support for over 61,000 jobs, including Hanscom Air Force Base, Natick Soldier Systems Center, Joint Base Cape Cod, Fort Devens, Westover Air Force Reserve Base and Barnes Air National Guard Base.

Christopher Willenborg has been an active member of the Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force since 2012, representing the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). He has worked in MassDOT’s Aeronautics Division since 2009, where he developed and implemented the first MassDOT Strategic Plan and Operations Plan. Prior to joining MassDOT, Chris was the airport manager of Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport in Western Massachusetts for over nine years and has been involved in airport management and aviation for over 20 years. 當天最特別的一道菜,是劉瑋珊的夫婿陳富雄從太平洋裏釣回來的鱈魚。不少人乍看擺出來的各色美食裏,竟然有烤魚,都食指大動,想要一筷子一條,又不好意思。劉瑋珊見到,直說不用擔心,有100多條,讓他們大喜過望。
劉瑋珊透露,文協辦野餐時,她就告訴周映秋打算準備一道烤魚,還把釣魚任務交給夫婿陳富雄。平常就愛出海釣魚的陳富雄,怕遇上釣不到魚的窘況,上週一就約了朋友出海,沒想到運氣真好,幾個人共釣100多條小鱈魚,全都給了陳富雄交差。劉瑋珊笑說,陳富雄週三又再出海,卻只釣到五條。

他們兩人後來把魚一條條剖開,取出魚腹,醃好,再在那天帶到野餐地點現場燒烤,每個吃到的人都讚嘆,鮮嫩美味,這天真是太有口福了。
今年的文協會長是資深會員,在麻省理工學院擔任電機工程及電腦系行政主管的周映秋。許多文協資深會員都是她的老相識,包括趙鍾英,蔣宗壬,史美芳,徐世勳,吳國志,龍麗俐,趙小怡,劉泰國,柯曼雯,吳萍萍以及周映秋的夫婿周健男,這天都格外早出席。
陳瑞虹,葛幼梅,胡世沛,馬滌凡,張鳳,黃淑英等人,也都陸續抵達。

當天出席的文協會員,許多人攜家帶眷。由於資深會員的子女有不少人中西聯姻,在老中青幾代同堂的野餐現場,華洋面貌相間,中英文交流,彷彿記錄著即將於明年慶祝成立六十週年的文協,這一路走來的變遷。

昆市市長選舉快入準備辯論期

挑戰市長一職的候選人,昆士市不分區市議員古楚(Doug Gutro)提議從下個月起,到922日初選前,舉辦四場辯論,以期選民對於該選出那兩個人進入113日的大選,更有概念。
目前已知的昆士市長候選人,除了競選連任的柯奇之外,其他的挑戰者包括曾經當過昆士市長,如今為再度參選,辭去霍布魯克(Holbrook)鎮行政長職務的費林(William Phelan),現任學校委員會委員,剛過了50歲生日,2011年以來曾兩度參選市長的馬洪妮(Anne Mahoney),以及現任昆士市不分區市議員古楚。
這三名挑戰者都樂意參與辯論。柯奇也說他歡迎在任何時候、地點舉辦候選人之夜,辯論,或對話,好讓他有機會分享昆士市在他任內的成功事蹟。
昆士居民 Charles Dennehey Jr. 雖然領取了參選市長表格,但根據麻州政府競選財務申報資料,他還未申報任何競選籌款所得。
另一名也領取了參選市長表格的昆市居民,建築工人Richard M. Turpin624日時不幸逝於癌症,享年60歲。
根據昆士市英文報章資料,已有兩場候選人之夜排定了日期。一場由共和黨昆士市委員會主辦,預定於811日晚上六到九點舉行,另一場由昆士市同性戀(LGBT)會見團(meetup group)主辦,預定於818日晚上六點半在“義大利之子”(120 Quarry St., Quincy)舉行。

這兩場活動開放給昆士市所有選舉的候選人參加。

昆市長柯奇競選連任 亞裔顧委會大力支持

昆士市今年將選出該市有史以來第一位一任四年市長。刻正競選第五度連任的現任市長柯奇(Tom Koch)面對激烈競爭,早已在亞裔社區積極動員助選,每週六都有亞裔到競選總部打電話,或到街頭舉牌助選。
725日,柯奇特地抽空,到競選總部感謝當天出席助選的劉炬,Maria Wong,李沛源,周寶,梁燕珍,邱潔芳,池元山,羅沃源,葉建華等亞裔,表示有他們幫助,昆市政府一定能和亞裔社區攜手合作,繼續打造更美好的昆士市。
柯奇的競選連任活動,日前一連串獲得麻州聯邦眾議員林奇(Steven Lynch),以及昆市教育協會(Quincy Education Association背書支持。根據柯奇在臉書上公布的圖片,波士頓市長馬丁華殊(Martin Walsh)也側身支持者行列。
柯奇為彰顯任內工作成績,聽取選民意見,近來除了逐戶敲門拜訪居民,還在臉書等社交媒體上,以各種圖文報告昆市的債信提高了,20092015年的物業稅漲幅只有14%,比起陶頓鎮(Taunton)35%,秋河市(Fall River)的34%,甚至羅爾市,林市(Lynn)的18%都低。
昆市的牌照局,日前批准了一天的特別牌照,將容許20輛食物卡車在926日(週六)這天,舉辦有史以來第一次的“昆市食物卡車節”,也是昆市不斷求新,提高市民生活品質的成果之一。
富士康公園(Faxon Park)剛在719日開通了四分之三哩長的紅鑽石步道(Red Diamond Trail),可供民眾跑步,散步,漫步。
717日,座落在茅屋道(Cottage Ave.3號的106年舊出租樓,翻修成為有28個房間,每個房間裡都有平板螢幕電視,冰箱,烹煮設備,三天以上起租,每天135元的短期居留酒店,新套房(Nova Suites),也是昆市中心開始轉型的起點。
柯奇從當選昆士市長起,當年支持他的亞裔居民就組成了昆士市長亞裔顧問委員會,後來更和“放眼昆士(Eye on Quincy)”這社區電視節目合作,為促進亞裔社區和昆市府之間的溝通做努力。
該會722日公佈最新近況,說明亞裔民眾最常找市政府的事情,大約可歸類為9項,包括稅務方面的如何了解特別估值,水留置權(water lien),會計年度,第一、第二季為估計稅;水費帳單,收垃圾,街燈,路坑,人行道的維修;冬天時的剷雪,淹水;停車標誌,過夜停車許可;鋪草皮或建欄杆,樓梯,翻修等的施工許可;房東房客爭執;移民問題;以及社會福利,家庭暴力,法律援助服務等等。
該會表示,2009年時,該會已協助昆士市長辦公室印製了中英雙語城市服務指南,有需要者都可上網下載。
