2014 Boston Marathon® Weekend

An Outline of What is New for Participants, Spectators, and the Public
BOSTON – With less than two weeks until the 118th Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 21, 2014, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) outlined changes to this year’s event. As it has since its inception in 1897, the Boston Marathon will be held on Patriots’ Day, a civic holiday commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord. For the 29th consecutive year, John Hancock Financial Services is the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon. Participants will follow the historic 26.2-mile course, which starts on Main Street in rural Hopkinton and finishes on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay. This year’s race will see changes in some areas for participants, spectators, and the public, listed below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Increased Field Size: In cooperation with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the eight cities and towns along the race route, the B.A.A. established the field size for the 2014 Boston Marathon at 36,000 entrants. This is a 33 percent increase from the field size limit of 27,000 entrants used in recent years and is the second-largest field size in Boston Marathon history. The Centennial Boston Marathon in 1996 had a starting field of 38,708, which stood for more than seven years as the largest in the history of the sport.
Race Day Schedule: To accommodate a larger field size, the Boston Marathon will use a four-wave start. The race day schedule for the 2014 Boston Marathon is listed below:

Gear Check at Boston Common: A gear check opportunity on Boston Common will be available on the morning of the Boston Marathon only, allowing official participants to have a change of clothing (shoes, pants, shirt, jacket) at the conclusion of the race. The clear, plastic bag to be used for this purpose will be provided at Number Pick-up by the B.A.A. and will be within every participant’s complimentary race packet. No other bags will be accepted and participants who intend to use gear check must check their own gear. Family and friends will not be allowed to check gear on behalf of a participant. Gear check tents will be color coded and correspond to the color of the wave to which a participant has been assigned (red, white, blue, or yellow). Gear check bags may be checked at Boston Common between 5:30 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. Gear check bags may be claimed from 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Policies for Official Participants and Spectators: In consultation with public safety officials, the B.A.A. previously released information on policies for official participants and spectators of the Boston Marathon, including a no-bag policy. More information on allowable and prohibited items for participants and spectators is included at the end of this issuance. In addition, please see attached infographic.
Additional Items on B.A.A. Buses and at Athletes’ Village: Participants may bring food, shoes, and/or clothing on B.A.A. buses and in Athletes’ Village, as long as those items are not carried in a bag or backpack. Participants may hold those items in their hands, or store them in the pockets of their clothing.
Please note: security at each location will have the authority to disallow products or materials that it deems inappropriate.
Post-Race Amenities: After completing the Boston Marathon, participants will be given the following, in this order: Finishers’ medals, Heatsheet® Warmth Retention Cape, Poland Spring Water, Gatorade Endurance Formula, Poland Spring Water, Gatorade Recovery Shake, PowerBar, and additional products. The Heatsheet Warmth Retention Cape is an innovative product that reflects radiant heat and minimizes conductive heat loss, keeping participants cool in the event of warmer weather or warm in the event of cooler weather.

Finish Area Exit Locations: There will be three locations along Boylston Street through which official participants may exit the secure finish area to reunite with family and friends: (1) Clarendon Street, (2) Berkeley Street, and (3) Arlington Street. The first two exit locations lead to the Family Meeting Area near Copley Square; the third location leads to the Boston Common Family Meeting Area and the gear check tents, located near the Parkman Bandstand. Those participants who did not use gear check on race morning may utilize either of the first two exit locations in order to reunite with family and friends sooner. Participants who used gear check on race morning will utilize the third exit location and claim their gear at Boston Common.

Family Meeting Areas: Participants are strongly encouraged to reunite with family and friends in one of two designated Family Meeting Areas. The Family Meeting Area near Copley Square is located along St. James Avenue and Stuart Street between Clarendon Street and Berkeley Street. The Boston Common Family Meeting Area is located near the gear check tents at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common. Alphabetically lettered signs will be posted, enabling race participants to meet with their supporters at the sign containing the first letter of the participant’s last name. AT&T Communication Centers will be available, allowing participants to make a complimentary call to family and friends after the race.

Awards Ceremony: New for 2014, the top 10 finishers in the men’s and women’s open division, and the men’s and women’s push rim wheelchair division champions, will receive their awards at Boston Marathon Mile 27: Official Post-Race Party, presented by Samuel Adams. Since 1986, John Hancock has provided nearly $16 million in prize money and continues that tradition with this year’s prize purse totaling $806,000, plus bonuses.

ADDITIONAL MARATHON WEEKEND INFORMATION

B.A.A. 5K and Invitational Mile: This year’s B.A.A. 5K will see a change in date, field size, and location. The 2014 B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 19, two days prior to the Boston Marathon. The field size for the B.A.A. 5K has been increased from 6,500 to 10,000 entrants. To accommodate this larger field size, the start and finish lines for the event have been relocated from Copley Square to Boston Common. Following the B.A.A. 5K, the B.A.A. Invitational Mile will take place at Copley Square, featuring some of the world’s fastest runners and middle school and scholastic runners from the eight cities and towns along the Marathon course.

Boston Marathon World Run: The B.A.A. created and launched the Boston Marathon World Run, a mobile application and website that connects runners from around the world to the 2014 Boston Marathon. This virtual experience allows anyone, regardless of ability or geography, to run or wheel a distance of their choosing and participate in the athletic spirit of the Boston Marathon. The app, created in partnership with John Hancock Financial Services and Manulife Financial, integrates with social media networks to create a virtual running community. Users receive digital training and finisher badges, as well as a downloadable bib number and finisher certificate. While there is no registration fee, participants are encouraged to donate to the One Fund Boston. To join the Boston Marathon World Run, visit www.bostonmarathonworldrun.org  or search “Boston Marathon World Run” in the Apple or Android app store.

Massachusetts Alerts: The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and the B.A.A. are partnering to ensure that runners and spectators receive important public safety and emergency information in a timely manner. Massachusetts Alerts is a communication tool used by MEMA to disseminate critical information to smartphones. Massachusetts Alerts is powered by a free downloadable application that is available for Android and iPhones. During the Boston Marathon, MEMA will use Massachusetts Alerts to share important public safety information, including severe weather and emergency contact information, with runners and spectators. To learn more about Massachusetts Alerts, and for information on how to download the free app (called Ping4Alerts) onto your Android or iPhone, go to: www.mass.gov/mema/mobileapp.

MBTA Stations: Government Center station (MBTA Green and Blue Lines) is currently closed for the next two years due to construction. Both Green and Blue Line trains will pass through Government Center Station but will not stop there. On race day, Copley Station (MBTA Green Line) and Arlington Street Station (MBTA Green Line) will be closed for the entire day. In addition, the following above-ground Green Line stations will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on race day: South Street Station (“B” train), Kent Street Station (“C” train) and St. Mary’s Street Station (“C” train).

(Evan Falchuk

STATE SENATOR TOM KENNEDY, STATE REPRESENTATIVES MICHAEL BRADY, CHRISTINE CANAVAN, AND CLAIRE CRONIN ENDORSE GROSSMAN FOR GOVERNOR

STATE SENATOR TOM KENNEDY, STATE REPRESENTATIVES MICHAEL BRADY, CHRISTINE CANAVAN, AND CLAIRE CRONIN ENDORSE GROSSMAN FOR GOVERNOR

Entire Brockton Delegation Cites Grossman’s Record of Leadership and His Progressive Vision for the State

BOSTON, MA – After a well attended meet and greet at George’s Café in Brockton earlier this week, State Senator Tom Kennedy and State Representatives Michael Brady, Christine Canavan, and Claire Cronin officially endorsed State Treasurer Steve Grossman in his campaign for governor. The delegation cited his record of leadership, his progressive vision for the state, and his commitment to economic fairness and job creation.

"I have full confidence that Steve will govern with the values of compassion and human decency that have shaped his career and his life thus far," said Kennedy. “His vision for the Commonwealth is to leave no one behind and level the playing field for hardworking residents and families still struggling to get by.”

"When Steve made a commitment to move money from banks overseas and invest our reserve funds into local banks, it helped us tremendously by improving business growth and creating much needed new jobs,” said Brady. “This is just one of the many reasons why I'm proud to endorse Steve Grossman for governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

"Steve has spent his entire career as a progressive job creator, and he has the experience we need to level the playing field and grow this economy for everyone," said Canavan. "I look forward to working with him every step of the way to create jobs and economic opportunity for the people of Brockton."

"One of the biggest issues we still face is the growth of our economy,” said Cronin. “Steve Grossman has a track record of creating jobs and knows how to work with others to get things done."

“I’m proud to earn the support of the entire Brockton delegation,” said Grossman. “We all share a progressive vision for Plymouth County and the entire Commonwealth that promises proven leadership to leave no one behind.”

Senator Kennedy represents the Second Plymouth and Bristol District, consisting of the city of Brockton and the towns of East Bridgewater, Halifax, Hanover, Hanson, Plympton, Whitman, and Easton. He serves as Chair of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure.

Representative Brady has represented the Ninth Plymouth District, consisting of the city of Brockton, since 2008. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.

Representative Canavan has represented the Tenth Plymouth District, consisting of the town of West Bridgewater and parts of Brockton and East Bridgewater, since 1993.

Representative Cronin was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives for the Eleventh Plymouth District, which includes both Brockton and Easton, in 2012.

Steve Grossman took office as state treasurer in 2011 after a long career as a small businessman, philanthropist, and progressive political activist. He is running for governor because he believes the people of Massachusetts want proven leadership that leaves no one and no region behind.

GOVERNOR PATRICK ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF “GO TIME” REAL TIME TRAFFIC SYSTEM

GOVERNOR PATRICK ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF “GO TIME” REAL TIME TRAFFIC SYSTEM
Real Time Traffic Information System Launches Today on Cape Cod, Operational Statewide by 2015

BOSTON – Friday, April 11, 2014 – Governor Deval Patrick today announced that the “GO Time” real time traffic information system is now operational along Route 6 on Cape Cod and will be expanded to highways statewide by 2015. The Governor made today’s announcement at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America’s transportation symposium in Boston where he was awarded the organization’s Smart Solution Spotlight Award for his Administration’s work in developing intelligent transportation systems to create a safer, cleaner, more efficient and sustainable transportation system.

“We are thinking creatively and using innovative technology to provide the real time information that can make a real difference in the daily lives of commuters,” said Governor Patrick. “I am proud of the work performed by MassDOT in its efforts to connect with its customers and of the work we have accomplished to support intelligent transportation projects that improve our quality of life.”

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) installed the first “GO Time” real time traffic information in summer 2012 along Interstate 93 and on Memorial Day 2013 expanded the system to include eastern I-90 and Route 3 south to Cape Cod. The system uses Bluetooth technology to measure average vehicle speeds and travel times. Real time traffic information begins today on Route 6 on Cape Cod and when completed GO Time will include 678 miles of state highway, including all major metropolitan highways.

“We have made a steadfast commitment to connect with our customers and make the system work better for them, whether taking public transportation or commuting on our state roadways,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey. “Expanding GO Time real time traffic information is another dramatic step forward in assisting motorists in all regions of the Commonwealth.”

The GO Time real time traffic system measures travel times between two points by anonymously tracking the Bluetooth enabled devices carried by motorists and their vehicles. The system complies with new federal legislation that requires real time traffic information to be provided to the public.

Temporary message boards currently in use will be replaced with permanent standard green federal highway signs with an embedded digital travel time display. The entire GO Time Intelligent Transportation System, when completed, will include 132 new travel time signs and 121 Bluetooth readers. The total cost of all locations now in operation and the statewide expansion is an estimated $17.5 million, with federal funds covering 80 percent of the cost.

MassDOT expects to install the GO Time system next to Interstate 91 from Connecticut to Northampton, followed by Route 24, I-195 on the South Coast, the Southern end of I-495, I-95 from Rhode Island to New Hampshire, the Northern end of I-495, Route 3 to Nashua, I-290 through Worcester, segments of Route 2, Routes 1 and 1A and on I-90 from Sturbridge to Chicopee.

“ITS America is excited to recognize MassDOT with our Smart Solution Spotlight award for their innovative and user-focused approach to solving transportation challenges,” said ITS America President and CEO Scott Belcher. “By providing an estimated 2.2 million travelers with reliable public transit service using its Real Time Traffic Management System, MassDOT has opened the doors to a data driven system that helps reduce traffic congestion for commuters across the region. Others around the nation are following suit, and MassDOT’s leadership in the use of real-time data exemplifies the significant real-world impacts that ITS technologies can have on improving our nation’s surface transportation systems, and the traveler experience.”

The GO Time information will also be available through MassDOT open data initiatives to provide feeds of real time information to web and Smartphone app developers and is the latest step in the Big Data initiative, opening transportation data for developers to assist in building a customer-friendly, healthy and sustainable transportation system.

In partnership with the Mass Big Data Initiative, MassDOT organized a “hackathon” in December 2013, inviting numerous groups with experience in data analysis. MassDOT made available many of its transportation data sources, including real time traffic data, volume counts and transit data. Hackers worked through the night, and presented their findings to MassDOT, with cash prizes awarded for the most compelling and insightful visualizations. Building on this success, additional MassDOT sponsored “hackathons” are planned.

“Big Data innovations can transform economies and help governments tackle major challenges,” said Pamela Goldberg, CEO of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. “MassDOT is a leader in the Commonwealth’s Mass Big Data Initiative, and we have been delighted to partner with state transportation leaders to expand public access to open data and to engage the Commonwealth’s big data entrepreneurs in transportation initiatives. Today’s announcement is another indicator of MassDOT's commitment to using technology-based solutions to improve the customer experience.”

            Jesse Brackenbury
