(The Significance of a National APA Museum: More Than a Place, a Legacy

Department of Unemployment Assistance Adjusting Call Center Hours to Improve Claims Processing

Department of Unemployment Assistance Adjusting Call Center Hours to Improve Claims Processing

Adjusted hours part of a three-month pilot set to take effect on August 1; Will allow DUA staff to more quickly work through unresolved claims

Boston – The Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) today announced a 3-month pilot program, starting on Friday, August 1 to temporarily adjust call center hours to Monday through Thursday and now dedicate Fridays to primarily addressing and processing open claims. This will allow DUA to process claims faster by addressing any issues with individual claims or benefit week filings, including ID verification, work separation issues, and wage verification. A common reason for increased call volume includes claimants checking on the status of such open work items. The Boston Re-Employment Center will keep its current hours for in-person customer service by appointment only, including on Fridays.

The new pilot, adjusting phone hours to allow DUA to focus on resolving outstanding claimant requests, follows an example proven effective in Oregon.

Today’s announcement builds on the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s continued focus on improving DUA customer service. In early May, DUA launched a new, modernized self-service system for current and future claimants seeking unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. Additionally, at the same time, DUA augmented call center staffing to achieve improved call wait times for customers. Since May, DUA has distributed more than $449 million in benefits. DUA is currently averaging approximately 5,748 initial claims per week.

“DUA is committed to improving operations and communication with impacted workers and employers,” said Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Lauren Jones. “Our administration has been making progress to improve DUA services and the unemployment insurance system, but we know that some claimants are still experiencing long processing times, and we want to urgently resolve them. Learning directly from the experience of Oregon in implementing this pilot, we have a creative solution that ultimately will strengthen outcomes for our customers. DUA customers navigate challenging and personal circumstances and eligible claimants deserve timely responses and helpful communication throughout the process.”

Pilot Program

Through the pilot, DUA is prioritizing making claims processing more efficient and strengthening its operations.

  • Current phone hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Beginning Friday, August 1, call center hours will change to Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • The Boston Re-Employment Center will keep its current hours for in-person customer service by appointment only, including on Fridays.
  • On Fridays, DUA staff will focus primarily on processing claims and working on other outstanding customer requests.
  • At the end of the 3-month pilot, DUA will reassess its call center hours.

How This Pilot Will Help

The pilot program will allow staff to prioritize processing claims and other claimant requests and will help keep the call center wait times low as a large portion of claimant calls are related to their claim status.

The adjusted call center hours will help customer service:

  • Allow DUA to deliver benefits to eligible customers faster.
  • Keep call center wait times low as fewer claimants will call for an update on their claim.
  • Handle new claims and work more promptly, preventing further delays.

“During our summer seasonal peak, DUA continues to face an increased volume of unresolved claims and issues. We have made significant strides, appreciate feedback, and continue to explore all options to provide appropriate turnaround times,” said Director of the Department of Unemployment Assistance Katie Dishnica. “This pilot will create additional capacity and help us improve claims processing. We will continue to review our process and are committed to improving service levels for our constituents.

What DUA Claimants Should Know

  • Starting August 1, the call center will be closed on Fridays.
  • This change does not affect the ability to file a claim or request weekly benefits online or over the phone.
  • DUA will provide updates about claims through the Unemployment Services for Workers inbox or the preferred communication method selected when customers file their initial claim.
  • Claimants can access more information and self-service options, 24 hours per day, through our customer facing online portal that can be accessed via computer, phone, or tablet in both English and Spanish.
  • In-person customer service is available through the Boston Re-Employment Center by appointment, Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made online. DUA has also hired field staff to provide office hours at regional MassHire career centers on a rotating basis.

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES INITIAL $5 MILLION IN GRANTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND CLOSE LIFE EXPECTANCY GAPS IN DORCHESTER, ROXBURY, AND MATTAPAN

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES INITIAL $5 MILLION IN GRANTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND CLOSE LIFE EXPECTANCY GAPS IN DORCHESTER, ROXBURY, AND MATTAPAN

In partnership with Atrius Health Equity Foundation and the Boston Community Health Collaborative, funding will advance economic mobility as part of the City and Boston Public Health Commission's Live Long and Well health equity agenda

BOSTON - Monday, July 28, 2025 - Mayor Michelle Wu, the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), Atrius Health Equity Foundation, and the Boston Community Health Collaborative today announced $5 million in grants for four community-led coalitions to build wealth and economic security in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan, the neighborhoods with the greatest health disparities in Boston. This is part of the City and BPHC’s Live Long and Well population health equity agenda to close the life expectancy gap in Boston by 2035. Atrius Health Equity Foundation committed $10 million in July 2024, representing the first multi-sector partnership to support this agenda. This $5 million is the first of two rounds of funding from Atrius Health Equity Foundation; the second is expected to be released in 2028.

“We want every resident and family in Boston to live long, healthy lives,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “That’s why we’re investing in systemic change and in resources to strengthen families and individuals. I’m grateful to all our community-based organizations who are partnering with us to address disparities and improve economic mobility in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan.”

“There are significant differences in life expectancy by race and by neighborhood throughout Boston,” said Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston. “Our goal is to ensure that all Boston residents can live long healthy lives. By investing in economic mobility, a key social determinant of health, we hope to close persistent disparities in health outcomes and improve quality of life throughout our communities.”

BPHC's Live Long and Well population health equity agenda focuses on three leading causes of early death in Boston: cardiometabolic diseases, cancer, and unintentional drug overdoses. Cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and other related disorders, are among the top three leading causes of death before the age of 65 in Boston and disproportionately impact communities of color. Social and economic factors such as poverty, insufficient housing, and food insecurity make it significantly more likely for a person to develop poorer health outcomes, including cardiometabolic diseases.

Economic security is a key driver to improving health, and Boston residents also identified it as a critical need in the 2025 Boston Community Health Needs Assessment, newly published by the Boston Community Health Collaborative (BCHC). BCHC is facilitated by the Boston Public Health Commission and convenes City departments, public health, healthcare, community-based organizations, and Boston residents to identify key health trends and priority issues that impact health and well-being. In this year’s assessment, residents self-identified economic insecurity as one of the top concerns that directly contributes to poor health outcomes and impacts their mental health. Some reported living day-to-day and paycheck-to-paycheck, making trade-offs to afford essentials and pay for housing, food, and groceries while being able to care for children. Many said affordable housing as well as access to good jobs and economic opportunities would improve quality of life and the health of their communities.

According to recent data from the American Community Survey, as reported by the Boston Community Health Collaborative, Boston’s median household income between 2019 and 2023 was $94,755. However, stark income disparities remain across neighborhoods and racial and ethnic groups. Roxbury reported the lowest median income at $49,921, while South Boston and the Seaport area had the highest at $162,257. Median household income is highest among white residents ($131,953) and lowest among Black ($58,628) and Latinx residents ($53,873). Data also show 17% of Boston residents are living in poverty and immigrants and those with a disability are disproportionately impacted by economic hardship. Mattapan has the highest percentage of young children living in poverty with 34% of children under five years old living below the poverty line.

“The mission of our Foundation is to close the gap in life expectancy across Eastern Massachusetts. We do this through bold investments that address the social and economic factors impacting health and that build collaboration and community leadership,” said Dr. Ann Hwang, President of Atrius Health Equity Foundation. “In Boston, we are delighted to be partnering with the City of Boston, the Boston Public Health Commission and the Boston Community Health Collaborative to support collaborative, community-driven programs that tackle economic mobility as a key lever for improving health.”

The $5 million in grants will go to four partnerships, totaling 12 organizations with additional support from several community-based organizations as part of the Live Long and Well Catalyst Program. The partnerships and their work include:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, Link Health, Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center: In partnership with Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center, Boys & Girls Club alumni will be trained as Link Health certified patient navigators and screen up to 50,000 Dorchester residents for financial assistance benefits worth an estimated $11 million.
  • Immigrant Family Services Institute, True Care Alliance Center, Massachusetts Association of Haitian ParentsThe coalition will provide English-language instruction and career training for 50 community health workers and an additional 500 people in healthcare, biotechnology, early childhood education, and hospitality. Training will include language skills, job coaching, financial literacy, advocacy and health education, and wraparound support.
  • The Community Builders, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Neighbors United: Eligible Dorchester residents will receive help with economic mobility services including housing and credit-building support, financial coaching, workforce development, and resources for childcare, transportation, and food access. The coalition will also expand community services, including The Community Builders’ food pantry. In addition, neighborhood associations will advocate for housing policy and funding improvements and strengthen cross-sector partnerships.
  • Upham’s Community Care, Dorchester Food Co-op, Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation: The coalition will expand Upham’s Community Care’s outreach vans to visit several Dorchester and Roxbury sites two days a week, with the goal of serving 3,480 people over two years. In addition to basic primary care services, the vans will provide access to economic mobility coaches and community food services.

“We are dedicated to creating better health and better living for all who call Dorchester’s Greater Codman Square neighborhood home,” said Stephanie Garrett-Stearns, Senior Vice President of Communications and Fund Development for The Community Builders. “We are thrilled to be selected for the Live Long and Well Catalyst Program. Powered by resident leaders, this partnership will activate personal economic mobility, increase heart healthy opportunities, build lasting community power and catalyze the built environment. We are grateful for the leadership and generous support of Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Public Health Commissioner Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, the Atrius Health Equity Foundation and the Boston Community Health Collaborative.”

“When people tell us what they need to be healthy, it’s important to listen and take action– and that is exactly what is happening here in Boston. We are so thankful to see significant resources invested to transform community priorities into meaningful change to build healthier, thriving communities,” said Magnolia Contreras, Vice-President of Community Health at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Co-Chair of the Boston Community Health Collaborative

The four partnerships were selected through a competitive call for proposals. For the first year, each partnership will receive $200,000 and technical assistance for program development. After the first year, they will implement their programs with the rest of the funds over an additional two years.

(Harry Potter and the Cursed Child)」獨家優惠門票。

ARTSBOSTON & EMERSON COLONIAL THEATRE MARK “HARRY POTTER” BIRTHDAY WITH MAGICAL TICKET DEAL AT COPLEY BOOTH

July 31 celebration includes birthday treats, Hogwarts games and exclusive deals on tickets to the upcoming Tony Award-winning play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

BOSTON, MA – July 25, 2025 – ArtsBoston and the Emerson Colonial Theatre invite Harry Potter fans to celebrate the wizard’s birthday on Thu., July 31 at the ArtsBoston Booth in Copley Square, where they can enjoy cupcakes, play Hogwarts games, and unlock exclusive ticket deals for the Boston premiere of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which comes to the Colonial this fall.

The six-time Tony Award-winning play runs for six weeks from Nov. 9 to Dec. 20, 2025. Its special-effects-enhanced story picks up right where the last Harry Potter story left off, with Harry—now a Ministry of Magic official—and his son Albus navigating family legacy, friendships, and the weight of the past.

ArtsBoston exclusive special-deal tickets ($59 and $99 all inclusive, representing up to $40 off full-price seats) will be available only in person at the Copley Square ArtsBoston Booth starting at 11 AM on July 31. Free treats, games, music and giveaways are among the activities planned from 11 AM to 3 PM near the Copley Booth.

Because ticket buyers are expected to queue up early for the in-person ticket deal, Copley Square construction near the Booth will be paused for the duration of the event. After the event, “Cursed Child” sales will continue at Copley and expand to the ArtsBoston Booth at Faneuil Hall. Tickets will be sold at both locations on Fri., Aug 1 and Sat., Aug 2, from 11 AM to 3 PM, while supplies last.

The Copley Square Booth is a small, jewel-box structure designed in 1994 by the late Boston-based architectGraham Gund, who died earlier this month and whose notable work includes Boston Ballet’s South End headquarters, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C., major projects for the Disney Company in Florida and Paris, and many others. Closed since the COVID pandemic and removed from public access by Copley Square reconstruction over the past two years, the Booth reopens fully this fall, offering discount tickets to arts events and serving as a cultural information conduit for residents and visitors.

“Our Copley Square Booth has always been magical in its ability to connect people to culture in Boston,” says Executive Director Catherine Peterson. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate reason to give people a sneak peek at our reopening than this extraordinary deal on an extraordinary play – and to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday with our friends at the Emerson Colonial Theatre.” Peterson says the Copley  and Faneuil Hall Booths will be open Wed.-Sat. from 11 AM to 3 PM through Labor Day.

“No one knows how to make magic better than the ArtsBoston team,” says Emerson Colonial Theatre General Manager Joey Riddle. “After our collaboration that brought hundreds of people to Faneuil Hall last year to launch ticket sales for ‘The Queen of Versailles,’ we knew that the Copley Booth…in its new surroundings and near the Boston Public Library…was the right choice to offer tickets at exclusive prices for this special event.”

Inclement weather accommodations will be posted on ArtsBoston’s website at artsboston.org.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION REVOKING TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION REVOKING TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS

FOR IMMIGRANT GROUPS In a statement issued on Friday, June 27, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that, as of September 2, 2025, Haitians can't remain in the United States under their Temporary Protected

Status (TPS) designation. A federal judge challenged this decision. For now, this

ruling restores TPS for Haitians until February 3, 2026.

The federal government is likely to appeal this ruling. TPS has already been revoked for several countries,

marking an ongoing trend from this administration. Most recently, Honduras and Nicaragua's TPS ended on July 5. Venezuela's

status ended on April 7. Afghanistan's TPS will end on July 15, Cameroon's on

August 4, and Nepal's on August 5.
