Invitational races feature start/finish on Boylston Street at Boston Marathon® finish line and $14,500 (USD) prize purse.

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced an elite field of world class competitors for the 2015 B.A.A. Invitational Mile, to be held on Saturday, April 18, two days prior to the 2015 Boston Marathon®. Three-time B.A.A. Invitational Mile champion and 2012 Olympian Morgan Uceny (USA) will look to win her fourth title, while European Championships medalist Chris O’Hare (GBR) headlines the men’s field. The B.A.A. Invitational Mile will also include Middle School 1,000 meter races and Scholastic Mile races featuring youths from the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course.  

  

A $14,500 (USD) prize purse will be distributed to the top professional finishers in the B.A.A. 

Invitational Mile. The male and female champion will each receive $3,000 (USD) in prize money. Prize money awards are equal for men and women.

Uceny, 30, who was ranked first in the world at 1500 meters in 2011, will look to win the fourth B.A.A. Invitational Mile title of her career. Uceny lives and trains in Boston under B.A.A. High Performance coach Terrence Mahon, and broke the finish tape first on Boylston Street in 2010, 2012, and 2014.

Uceny is coming off of a stellar indoor season which saw her set a personal best of 4:29.39 for the mile in New York City. Uceny won last year’s B.A.A. Invitational Mile in a time of 4:44.0; this year she’ll go for her fourth victory, with Anna Willard’s event record of 4:38.6 within reach.

Fellow Americans Heather Kampf and Gabe Grunewald aim to claim their first B.A.A. Invitational Mile title, both having run the race before. In 2014 Kampf finished a close second to Uceny, while Grunewald was runner-up in 2013. Kampf is the reigning USA Road Mile National Champion.

  

Also competing on the women’s side are Ethiopian Dawit Seayum, the 2014 World Junior champion at 1500 meters, and Americans Brie Felnagle, Rachel Schneider, and Emily Lipari. Lipari is a member of the B.A.A.

Great Britain’s O’Hare, a University of Tulsa graduate who trains in Boston and is also coached by Terrence Mahon, won a bronze medal at this year’s European Indoor Championships 1500m. He also owns a bronze medal from the 2014 European Outdoor Championships 1500m, and won the 2012 NCAA Indoor Mile national title.

O’Hare looks to continue a strong British tradition at the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, as fellow countryman Andy Baddeley won a pair of titles in 2010 and 2011.

Facing off against O’Hare in the men’s professional race will be Americans Duncan Phillips and Frezer Legesse, as well as Britain’s Chris Gowell. Representing the Boston Athletic Association are Steve Mangan and Dan Lowry.

The men’s event record for the B.A.A. Invitational Mile is 4:03.3, set by New Zealand’s Nick Willis in 2013.

The B.A.A. Invitational Mile includes six races, held shortly after the 2015 B.A.A. 5K. The first two races feature middle school age students from the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course – Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline, and Boston. The girls’ and boys’ Middle School 1,000 meter races include runners between sixth and eighth grade and finish at the Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street.  

  

Following the Middle School 1,000 meter races is the Scholastic Mile, which features girls’ and boys’ races for high school students from the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course. The Scholastic Mile follows the same three-lap, USATF-certified course the professional mile athletes run, finishing at the Boston Marathon finish line.

波士頓市長廣徵民意 打造波市藝術文化形象

波士頓市長馬丁華殊（Martin Walsh）和波市首任文化藝術長茱莉巴洛斯（Julie Barros）等人，昨（九）日在市政府大樓大堂宣佈，推出“波士頓創造”，要在十六個月內深入社區，廣徵意見，藉以打造波士頓未來十年的藝術形象，文化生活。

波士頓市長馬丁華殊透露，前年競選市長時，坊間辦過多次市長候選人論壇，其中出席人數最多的兩次論壇，一次有關環境議題，另一次就是文化藝術，各有八百多人。他上任市長十六個月以來，也漸次發覺，波士頓需要一個“文化計畫”，讓波士頓的文化及藝術形象，更能反映波士頓的歷史，市內居民多元背景，藝術成就。“波士頓創造”將根據社區大眾的意見，來塑造這一形象，規劃出未來十年的波士頓市“文化計畫”。

馬丁華殊感謝Barr基金會，Klarman家庭基金會在波市府目前沒有多少文化藝術經費之際，撥款贊助這一活動。他表示，在剛地交出去的2016年度波士頓預算中，已經要求增編了文化藝術經費，希望在“波士頓創造”贏得更多社區支持後，將來能爭取到更多經費，

Barr基金會，Klarman家庭基金會為支持這放眼未來的創舉，各捐了七十萬元。波市府文化藝術長茱莉巴洛斯，波士頓巴洛克（Baroque）主任Miguel Rodriguez，Barr 基金會文化藝術項目資深主任黃珊珊（San San Wong）等人組成的十六人指導委員會，從去年九月起，每月開會一至兩次的討論了不下半年。

Barr基金會董事長James E. Canales表示，資助打造文化藝術形象的意見徵集和籌備，不是該會一向的捐款種類，但為幫助波士頓人把握這一輩子難有的一次機會，該會很高興參與盛舉。

在芝加哥曾主持過類似創造文化藝術形象活動的波市首任文化藝術長茱莉巴洛斯表示，波市府已決定，“波士頓創造”的社區意見徵詢活動完成，制定草案後，將交由非牟利組織，“文化計畫團（Cultural Planning Group）”，以及劍橋市的 WolfBrown 公司承辦計畫執行。

Community driven process will create first-ever Cultural Plan for Boston

BOSTON - April 9, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the launch of Boston’s cultural planning process that will create a blueprint for arts and culture in the City of Boston. Boston Creates will engage residents, visitors, and stakeholders to help local government identify cultural needs, opportunities, and resources and to think strategically about how these resources can help the community to achieve its civic goals. The process will create a ten-year plan, designed to prioritize, coordinate, and align public and private resources to strengthen cultural vitality over the long term. Volunteers are sought to join the Leadership Council and Community Teams to advise on, guide, and drive participation in the process throughout its duration.

“Boston is a city of innovation, diversity and collaboration - a city where creativity and imagination are some of our most powerful assets,” said Mayor Walsh “Over the next fifteen months, we are going to look to all voices in the city to tell us what matters. This shared vision for the City will ensure all residents can fully experience and benefit from Boston’s vibrant arts and cultural life.”

In September 2014, Mayor Walsh appointed a 15-member steering committee, comprising representatives from City government and the arts. This committee was charged with recommending a cultural planning consultant team and advising the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Upon the recommendation of the Steering Committee, Boston Creates will be led by the Cultural Planning Group, a consulting practice serving the field of arts and culture with some of the country’s foremost experts in organizational capacity building and public art. Founded in 1998, they have worked with municipalities across the country to create cultural plans. Locally, they will partner with WolfBrown and Archipelago Strategies to design a robust research methodology, understand the unique creative identity of Boston, and create a plan based on the priorities of the community.

“The Cultural Planning Group has a unique set of skills and a knowledge base of cultural planning that will help Boston understand how it can become a municipal arts leader,” said Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston. “Together, we will create a plan that builds on our existing creative assets, achieves consensus on the top priorities for improvement, and clearly spells out how we can move forward to implement the recommendations in the plan.”

The process will depend upon community participation for its success. The Cultural Planning Group will be working to engage individuals across the city in the process, creating a Leadership Council and Community Engagement Teams that will help guide the process throughout its duration. On Tuesday, June 2, 2015, Boston Creates will host its first Cultural Planning Town Hall, inviting everyone from across the city to share their opinions and ideas about cultural priorities.  The Town Hall will be followed by interviews with individuals and groups to lay out a comprehensive map of Boston’s cultural assets, including its variety of arts organizations, festivals, and public art locations.

“The plan will be the most authentic if people engage,” said David Plettner-Saunders, partner at the Cultural Planning Group. “We want to help Boston define its unique creative identity, develop a shared vision for the creative future and identify the sustainable resources that can make it happen. Ultimately, we will strive to create a plan that is both realistic and aspirational, one that has support of the public and the Mayor and one that will lead to greater civic leadership. We believe this is achievable through diverse participation and shared voices.”

In partnership with the City of Boston, the Barr Foundation and the Klarman Family Foundation have provided the funding necessary to ensure the cultural planning process could be launched in a timely manner and that it be informed by best practices from other cities.

“This is an exciting moment in time for Boston, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a plan that harnesses the full potential of arts, culture, and creativity to inspire us, to enrich our lives, and to enliven our communities,” said James Canales, president and trustee of The Barr Foundation. “Along with many others, we look forward to being a constructive partner in advancing arts and culture well into the future.”

波士頓有近十五萬名學生人口

波士頓市昨（九）日公佈有史以來的第一份“學生住宅趨勢報告”，說明三項優先要務，為波士頓預定於2030年時，建18500個新宿舍床位給學生，釋出5000個住宅回房屋市場的理想打基礎。

            該報告由波士頓市鄰里發展局（DND），稽核局(ISD)，以及波士頓重建局（BRA）攜手製作。

            該報告指出，在波士頓市各大學院校註冊上學的學生約有十四萬八千人，其中二萬一千四百廿五人為大學本科生，在校園以外的波士頓市內居住。不過從2013年秋天以後，這一數目下降了1,442。在2014年內，波市新建了1395個宿舍床位，使得全市的宿舍床位，增加到39178。

            該報告指出，馬丁華殊政府在2015年的學生住宅優先要務有三項，包括終結大學本科生在校外租住時，一屋住五人以上的非法行為；訂定實在的截止日期，要求各大學院校在校園內增建宿舍；容許私人發展商在符合並獲得特定社區許可下，在校園外建造宿舍。

            波士頓市根據波市議會在2014年夏天通過的新大學問責條例（University Accountability Ordinance），取得了報告中的數據，也向社區透明化了波士頓學生租住情況。

            該報告提供的數據還包括，2014年秋季在波士頓大學院校內就讀的十四萬八千四百零二人中，有32%住在校園內，67% 住在校園外。住在校園外的學生中，有38%，約三萬八千二百三十二人住在波士頓室內，62%住在其他的大波士頓地區。

波士頓警察局A-1區警長鄺志強晤華埠社區聯盟

波士頓警察局A-1區警長鄺志強（Kenneth Fong）昨（八）日與波士頓華埠社區聯盟（TCC）座談，稱許波士頓華埠治安巡邏隊，慨言礙於法令，無力制止乞討，強調民眾是警察“耳目”，遇事別怕打九一一。

            波士頓華埠社區聯盟（TCC）在完成華埠總體發展計畫，綠茵苑（One Greenway）即將竣工，昆市高中與藝術高中爭取聯合發展第廿五號地段（該計畫其後觸礁）等大事之後，已接連多月無重大議題討論，每月開會重點，變成了各社團出席代表和應邀到會民代或公職人員的互動會。

            波士頓警察局A-1區警長鄺志強（Kenneth Fong）昨日到會，在回答提問時說明，整個波士頓警察局現有約五十名亞裔警察，一半以上都通雙語，包括他自己，以及英文名都是Jimmy Chin的兩人，約有三人側身管理層。在A-1區內，包括翁天生（Tommy Young)，以及一名梅姓警察等，絕大多數都在波士頓本地長大，與地方居民頗為熟稔。

        鄺志強指出，社區民眾的確有如警察“耳目”，警察要靠社區民眾遇事撥打九一一，才能更適時的採取行動，達成維護地方治安的使命。

        在回應華人醫務中心奶券部代表所提的“流浪漢強行討錢”一事，鄺志強坦言，在麻州乞討不犯法，警察通常無可奈何，後來經過爭取，制定了“傾略性乞討”條例，也只是讓警察在流浪漢討錢阻礙了交通時，可以對他們採取行動。他坦言，青少年在路上遭遇流浪漢強行討錢等情況，一旦事過境遷，即使報案，警察能做的也不多。

            鄺志強強調，警察們一直都很努力的維持地方治安，至於華埠面臨的貴族化威脅，他們這些當年在華埠長大的警察當然都有目共睹，但這已超出警察的職權範圍，他能做的不多。有關治安方面的事，他歡迎華埠民眾和他交流。

            華埠社區聯盟昨日的另一項議程是哈佛大學菲利普布魯克斯屋協會（Philip Brooks House Association)主任麥戈文（Kerry McGowan）報告該機構辦理的成人英語班等情況。

            綠路（GreenWay）保護會董事陳秀英在會上報告，該會刻正徵付薪暑期供兩名，從六月底開始工作，希望有更多華埠青少年申請。她還透露，該會正和騰皇閣東主接觸，希望能美化一下該棟樓宇前的木板，以期春天來臨後，華埠公園可以更美麗。

            華埠社區聯盟下次會議定五月十四日（週四）早上九點半，在波士頓華埠社區中心（BCNC）四樓舉行。
