UNITE HERE LOCAL 26 AND HYATT REACH AGREEMENT

UNITE HERE LOCAL 26 AND HYATT REACH AGREEMENT

Agreement Provides $1 Million in Assistance to Hyatt Housekeepers and Ends Union’s Boycott of Hyatt Hotels in Boston

BOSTON — Hyatt and UNITE HERE Local 26, the hospitality workers union, today announced an agreement that resolves a longstanding dispute between the two organizations. Both UNITE HERE Local 26 and Hyatt hailed the pact as a positive step that is good for Boston and will improve the relationship between the union and the company.

Hyatt will provide $1 million in assistance to the housekeepers who were terminated at Hyatt Boston Harbor, Hyatt Regency Boston, and Hyatt Regency Cambridge in 2009.  In addition, Hyatt will offer the housekeepers priority in the application process for a housekeeping position at specified future Hyatt-managed hotels within Boston and Cambridge. The financial assistance will be distributed based on each of the housekeepers’ years of service.

With this agreement, UNITE HERE Local 26 will end its boycott activities aimed at Hyatt Boston Harbor, Hyatt Regency Boston, and Hyatt Regency Cambridge.

“We never forgot the courage these workers showed by speaking up when they were let go,” said Brian Lang, president of UNITE HERE Local 26. “Hyatt is showing courage by doing the right thing today.”

“Through this agreement, we are able to demonstrate care for our former colleagues,” said Marc Ellin, senior vice president at Hyatt. “Each of these former associates made a difference in the lives of guests who stayed in our hotels. We are very pleased to extend assistance to them and offer them priority in hiring as new jobs become available at future Hyatt-managed hotels.”

Hyatt and UNITE HERE Local 26 are working together to notify the housekeepers of this agreement.

“We look forward to an improved relationship with Hyatt in Boston,” said Lang. “Both organizations deserve credit for working out this constructive step forward.”

Will look at best practices for developing neighborhood innovation districts throughout Boston

BOSTON – Today Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced the formation of a “Neighborhood Innovation District Committee” to expand innovation and entrepreneurship in the City of Boston.  “As we seek to foster and support economic development in Boston, it is essential for us to establish an environment that supports entrepreneurship and job creation throughout all corners of our city,” said Mayor Martin J. Boston Supports
Global Action Day
The Boston group (Association of Overseas Hong Kong Chinese for Democracy and Human Rights) held a protest on Saturday September 27 to support Hongkong people’s actions to assert their right of universal suffrage.   The protest started at 6:45 pm outside a banquet in downtown Boston attended by officials from the Chinese Consulate to celebrate Oct-1st.  Through the glass walls, banquet-goers could clearly see banners mounted on top of two minivans parked right outside the restaurant entrance. The curtains of the ground floor banquet hall were drawn down in a hurry. Some banquet-goers, especially the youngsters, could still peek through the gaps.  Everybody inside could hear the shouting of slogans whenever people went through the doors.  We continued to rally and hold up banners for another hour.  Reporters from a few newspapers were following this event all the time.

The restaurant also happened to be a dinning destination for tour groups, and on the way to a central transportation terminus. Busloads of Chinese tourists and many travelers looked on to our Chinese and English banners such as “No Fake Universal Suffrage in Hong Kong”, “Support Democracy in China”, "Don't Let Tiananmen Massacre Repeat in Hong Kong", and “Do Not Arrest Students”.  Some showed gestures of support, and many kept their silence. We knew for sure people got the message, including those going to the Consulate’s banquet.

Let’s go to the “banquet.”

More photos of the rally can be seen in aohkcdhr Facebook:

(Boston Orange
