THIS WEEK, THE DEPARTMENT OF SUPPLIER DIVERSITY CELEBRATES SUPPLIER DIVERSITY WEEK


Today marks the start of the City of Boston’s Supplier Diversity Week, taking place October 27 through October 31.


Throughout Supplier Diversity Week, the Department of Supplier Diversity will host a series of free and open networking events, informational sessions, and workshops to highlight and promote diversity and inclusion within Boston’s business community. These events include:

SMALL BUSINESS

NOMINATE A LONG STANDING BUSINESS FOR THE LEGACY BUSINESS AWARDS


It is the final week of the nomination period for the fourth annual Legacy Business Awards. Residents are encouraged to nominate long standing businesses that have been located within the city of Boston for at least 10 years and contribute to the cultural, historical, and societal fabric of their community or neighborhood.


To nominate a business, residents can use the online form, visit their local Boston Public Library branch for assistance filling out the form, or call the Office of Small Business at 617-635-0355 for assistance. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, October 31, 2025.

GLOBAL AFFAIRS

GLOBAL AFFAIRS TEAM HOSTS BOSTON INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LEADERS FOR GLOBAL BUSINESS CONNECT 2025


Last Thursday, October 23, the City of Boston’s Global Affairs team welcomed international business leaders, entrepreneurs, and members of the Consular Corps to the Civic Pavilion at Boston City Hall for Global Business Connect 2025.


Global Business Connect 2025 brought together leaders from across international business sectors to share City of Boston resources for startups and international businesses, highlight upcoming global business conference opportunities, and provide space for networking with peers and the Global Affairs team.

OPEN STREETS BOSTON MAKES DEBUT IN MATTAPAN


On Saturday, October 18, Open Streets Boston launched its first event in Mattapan, transforming Blue Hill Avenue from River Street to Babson Street into a car-free pedestrian zone featuring local businesses and community organizations, vendors, and family-friendly activities. 


Participating vendors included Boston Flower Co., Black Dollar, and Dorchester Food Co-op. City of Boston departments including Planning, Black Male Advancement, Immigrant Advancement, and Veteran Services also participated in the event.


There is one more Open Streets event scheduled for the 2025 season! Join the City of Boston on Sunday, November 2 for Open Streets Boston - Jamaica Plain along Centre Street from 10:30 am to 3 pm.

LICENSING BOARD

CITY OF BOSTON LICENSING BOARD APPROVES FOUR NEW LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATIONS


Last Thursday, October 23, the City of Boston Licensing Board approved four new liquor licenses for restaurants across Boston. The approved applicants include Bono Restaurant and Catering in East Boston, El Barrio Mexican Grill and Mondo in the South End, and The Mix Vault in Roxbury. All businesses were approved for zip code-restricted all alcohol licenses. These businesses completed the application and community process prior to May 23, qualifying them for the second round of the allocation process.


The City has ramped up efforts to increase applications for the remainder of the 2025 neighborhood restricted licenses. The remaining 65 neighborhood restricted licenses will become available on January 1, 2026, allowing small business owners in communities like East Boston and the South End to access these opportunities. The deadline for consideration will be announced soon.


Potential liquor license applicants are encouraged to start the process as soon as possible. The Mayor’s Office of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, the Office of Neighborhood Services, and Office of Small Business staff will continue to support potential applicants. The City of Boston Licensing Board hosts virtual office hours addressing the liquor license application process. Applicants can also make a drop-in appointment with the Boston Licensing Board at City Hall, Room 809 by contacting 617-635-4170 or emailing licensingboard@boston.gov

BOSTON BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: MADHOUSE MOTORS AND MADHOUSE CAFE


Earlier this month, Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Segun Idowu and Deputy Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Donald Wright visited Madhouse Motors and Madhouse Cafe in Roxbury. They met with the owner of both establishments, J. Shia, who is an internationally recognized and award-winning custom motorcycle builder from Boston. 


Over a decade ago, Shia established Madhouse Motors, a motorcycle repair shop specializing in antique and custom machines. Since its founding, J. has emerged as one of the world’s leading motorcycle builders and designers. In 2022, Shia launched Madhouse Café next door, which offers locally roasted coffees and Lebanese-inspired pastries and dishes.


The Office of Small Business has worked closely with Madhouse Motors and Madhouse Cafe over the past few years, providing exterior signage support through the ReStore program and assistance through the ReFRESH grant.

波士頓古箏樂團“雲和泠泠”音樂會 逾百觀眾鼓掌

            Boston Orange周菊子麻州報導)波士頓古箏樂團(Boston Guzheng Ensemble1025日晚在勒星頓鎮的蘇格蘭式共濟會博物館及圖書館(Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library)舉辦「雲和泠」音樂會。中途雖一度出現假火警,絲毫無損逾百觀眾欣賞熱情,曲終掌聲熱烈。

            這場演出,共安排有12首曲目,上下半場,各以陳志新於2012年創辦的波士頓水底魚打擊樂團,表演「香港活力鼓令廿四式第廿四式:勇冠三軍」,以及「安徽花鼓燈」來開場。

            2002年創辦波士頓古箏樂團的楊信宜,則率領學生胡凱楹,胡巧穎,李澤恩,潘潔祾等人,彈奏了潮州箏曲「景春蘿」,「市集」,陝西民歌「繡金匾」,朝鮮民謠「絲綢姑娘」,江蘇民歌「拔根蘆柴花」,以及「醒獅舞曲」,「蝴蝶與藍」,根據日本電影“菊次郎之夏”主題曲改編的「夏天」,台灣流行音樂作曲家梁弘志譜寫,歌詞取自蘇軾水調歌頭,收錄在鄧麗君1983年專輯“淡淡幽香”中的「但願人長久」,以及向新梅以4首台灣民謠與流行歌曲,“丟丟銅”,“天黑黑”,“月夜愁”,“桃花過渡”等改編,曲名是葡萄牙文的美麗之島的「福爾摩沙(Formosa)」等曲目。

            其中的「蝴蝶與藍」,還請來大提琴手彭亦勤加入演出陣容,展現中西樂合併的毫無違和感。

            為幫助觀眾了解曲目,音樂會節目冊還印製了樂曲解說,簡述每一首曲目的內容。楊信宜指出,在挑選演出曲目時,他們特地挑選了來自不同地域的音樂,既豐富音樂會內容,也讓觀眾們體會中國傳統樂器古箏,其實內涵很豐富。

            楊信宜還透露,這次的音樂會取名「雲和泠泠」是因為古箏在古代有“雲和“這別稱,而是水聲,而古代詩詞提到古琴,常用來形容。

            Geminai上則有進一步解說,指出唐代有一種改良古箏,名為“雲和箏”,是古代樂器家族中眾多以“雲和”命名的樂器之一。

            這晚的音樂會,有楊信宜老師好幾代的學生,隊友出席捧場,音樂會落幕後,紛紛圍攏,和楊信宜一起回憶當年學習情景。把大波士頓中華文化協會國樂團團長棒子交給楊信宜的潘台春,歐陽東美夫婦,這晚也和好友李台牙醫師,太極學生黃怡菁等人在座,從頭到尾的完整欣賞。

            有趣的是,音樂會下半場第2首曲子剛開始演奏時,場內突然響起火警聲,座中眾人互相對望,覺得不可思議之餘,都還是乖乖地遵循美國消防原則,魚貫走出會場,在門外等候。消防車倒是來得很快,幾分鐘檢查之後,所有人又再回到大廳,繼續欣賞表演。(訂正標題及錯字版)

                 (Boston Orange周菊子波士頓報導)紐英崙伍胥山公所1025日在公所會只舉辦「認識乙型肝炎」講座,邀得塔芙茨(Tufts)醫療中心臨床教師顧問兼肝病科執業護士吳妙麗,以生動淺顯語言講解,40多名出席宗親瞬間秒懂乙肝不可怕,只是得治療。

                  吳妙麗和伍詹淑慧是塔醫同事。她開宗明義地先指出,肝臟是人體最大的內臟器官,為人處理飲食,並轉化為能量和營養素,對抗感染,去除血液中有害物質,也製造幫助消化食物的物質。如果失去肝臟,人將無法生存。

                  乙型肝炎則是世界上最常見的肝臟感染病毒疾病,嚴重時會導致肝臟發炎,硬化,轉化成癌症,使人死亡。

                  乙型肝炎主要有2種,一種是急性,或短期的,一種是慢性,長期持續6個月以上的。人們通常是在不知不覺中感染的,如果不醫治,有四分之一的慢性乙肝病人會發展到肝硬化,肝癌。

                  由於乙肝患者,多半感覺健康,多年都無症狀,但病毒會損傷肝臟,會感染其他人,因而被稱為無聲殺手。美國就有五分之四的乙肝患者不知道自己染患有乙肝。

                   當然,染患乙肝,還是可以查覺的,包括人體出現眼睛和皮膚發黃的黃疸,身體呈現染患流感狀態,嘔心和嘔吐,關節痛,胃的右部疼痛,沒有食慾,疲勞,大便顏色淺,尿液色澤深等等狀況。

                  染有乙肝的人數,全世界大約有2.96億人,美國則有大約240萬人。在美國乙肝患者中,約12分之一是亞裔,約8分之一出生於非洲。一般來說,除了家族因素外,在工作中會接觸血液,和人共用注射器及針頭,和感染者共用剃鬚刀,牙刷,指甲刀等衛生用品,感染的機率就高。

                  想要確認自己是否患有乙肝,可以驗血。美國疾病控制及預防中心(CDC)就建議18歲以上成年人,一生至少做一次乙肝篩查,如果從未感染,務必接種疫苗,以做預防,如果已經感染了,要就醫複診,並定期就醫的做一種,或多種檢查,包括DNA,丙氨酸轉氨酶(ALT),超聲波和甲胎蛋白檢查等等。

                  已經染患乙肝者,需照顧自己的身體,保持飲食均衡,向醫師查詢自己所服用的藥物會否損害肝臟,應該戒煙戒酒,

                  吳妙麗強調,由於乙肝目前並無徹底根治辦法,人們應該定期看醫生,以了解自己染患乙肝風險,或如何掌控乙肝病情。要查詢乙肝相關知識,可以訪問網站hepB.com

廣教學校慶109週年 黃瑞瑜出任校董會董事長 趙真接代理校長

                   (Boston Orange周菊子波士頓報導) 中華廣教學校1024日,以「向讓我們發光的人致敬」為主題,8獅齊舞,假帝苑大酒樓舉辦的建校109週年籌款會,掀開學校新篇章,不僅校董會選出黃瑞瑜、史月琳這2名年輕人出任正副主席,連代理校長趙真都是新人。

                  400多名出席嘉賓聽鑼鼓喧天,賞歌舞助興之餘,還見證該校頒貢獻獎表揚今年辭世的該校前董事長李伍綺蓮,以及長年慷慨捐輸,支持該校,如今由Eric Tabari擔任執行長的華人醫務中心。

                  波士頓市議會議長Ruthzee Louijeune,市議員Erin MurphyEd Flynn,以及波士頓經文處組長黃耀良,波士頓僑教中心主任高家富,曾任波士頓市議員,今年回頭參選不分區市議員的Frank Baker,這晚都是嘉賓。

                  新接任中華廣教學校董事會主席的黃瑞瑜,當年也是廣教學校學生,和另一名校董何偉邦都是伍胥山公所美東副總理伍輝民之妻,伍鍾美貞的學生。校董會內總共有3名董事曾是廣教學校學生。

                  黃瑞瑜在開場致辭中表示,感謝包括50多名廣教學校學生和家長的400多嘉賓出席,支持盛會。她強調,中華廣教學校是一所植根於波士頓華埠,為青少年提供學術,中文和中國文化,以及各種才藝課程的學校,能夠走過109年絕不容易,全靠社區及善心人士的支持。

                  她也點名感謝副校長余仲強訓練醒獅隊有功,當晚才能有8獅齊舞的大陣仗。

                  她指出,人們可在當晚派發的109年籌款會刊上看到,該校有94%學生的家庭,收入低於麻州中位數,該校因此撥備9萬元,為就讀學生提供浮動收費援助。讓人欣慰的是,該校符合資格學生,有80%被波士頓市3所考試學校錄取。

                  她代表學校感謝所有的老師與教職員,有效運做該校的課後輔導班,週末語言與文化班,以及暑期班等3種班別。更感謝所有的支持者和捐助者,年復一年的堅持,廣教學校才得以發光發熱的為學生及社區服務。

                  廣教學校這晚還特地頒獎感謝贊助者,包括當晚捐款6699元的黃氏宗親會元老黃官羨,黃高秀地產信託,華人醫務中心,史月琳、Ryan Powers夫婦,紐英崙中華公所,周樹昂夫婦,另外頒發傑出服務獎給卸任校董會董事長梁爾尊,終身服務獎給該校員工林添籌。
