CONRAD TAO AND CALEB TEICHER’S “COUNTERPOINT”:

A UNIQUE COLLABORATION OF MUSIC AND DANCE

The duo’s latest performance follows a residency at Boston Arts Academy (BAA).

Celebrity Series is among the first presenters to bring nationally acclaimed artists to BAA’s state-of-the-art theater.

Boston, MA — January 2, 2025 – Acclaimed pianist/composer Conrad Tao and celebrated choreographer/dancer Caleb Teicher join forces for “Counterpoint,” an innovative collaboration presented by Celebrity Series of Boston. The show, which builds on both artists’ distinctive talents, runs for three performances on Friday, February 7 @ 8 pm and Saturday, February 8 @ 2 pm and 8 pm. “Counterpoint” plays at the Boston Arts Academy (BAA) Theater, 174 Ipswich Street in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. Celebrity Series’s unique partnership with BAA allows it to be one of the few presenters to utilize the school’s state-of-the-art theater.

“Counterpoint” highlights its rising duo’s distinct artistic practices — Tao’s virtuosic piano performance and Teicher’s groundbreaking tap choreography — and brings them into a shared expression that bridges their individual creative capacities. Tao and Teicher find separate but interdependent expressions through harmonic, rhythmic and theatrical interplay across a wide variety of musical genres.

The program’s stylistically diverse repertoire includes “Aria” from J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatum’s stride piano rendition of “Cherokee,” Schöenberg’s “Walzer” from Five Piano Pieces, Op. 23, Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue arranged for solo piano, excerpts from Tao’s score for the artists’ previous collaboration More Forever (2019), and other works.

BOSTON ARTS ACADEMY RESIDENCY

For three days before their public performances, Celebrity Series has arranged for Teicher and Tao to bring BAA students into their process, offering a workshop on collaboration and improvisation, opening rehearsals to the school community, and encouraging students to participate in the theatrical production process with mentors who will lead them through lighting, stage and sound design, as well as stage management.

“Conrad and Caleb’s residency at BAA is a new step in a ten-year partnership to engage young people in the magic of making, presenting, and producing art on stage,” says Celebrity Series President and Executive Director Gary Dunning. “We’re excited to watch the magic that unfolds behind the scenes when students and Celebrity Series artists work together.”

“Boston Arts Academy is honored to partner with Celebrity Series and welcome this production,” says Maura Tighe, BAA’s Artistic Director. “The partnership aligns with BAA's mission to educate the next generation of artists, scholars and global citizens. The program will include a master class with Caleb and Conrad, and the opportunity for technical theater students to work in backstage positions.”

Tickets to “Counterpoint” start at $44 and are available here. A post-performance conversation with the artists is planned after the 8 pm show on February 8.
