BCNC’s Build a Better Life Financial Literacy Program is a free workshop series with topics that include, protecting your money, managing credit, paying for college, buying a house or car and planning for your financial goals, among other topics.
“Massachusetts citizens are walking a financial tightrope and are in need of the basic necessities that can help them become financially successful,” said Jerry Sargent, President of Citizens Bank, Massachusetts. “Through our Citizens Helping Citizens Manage Money” program, we are working together with state and nonprofit organizations to empower our fellow citizens with the knowledge and resources they need to budget, save, invest and be fiscally healthy.”

BULGER COMPANION SENTENCED TO 21 MONTHS IN PRISON

FOR CRIMINAL CONTEMPT

BOSTON – Catherine Greig, the longtime companion of convicted killer James “Whitey” Bulger, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Boston in connection with her refusal to testify before a federal grand jury.  The investigation centered on whether others assisted her and Bulger during the 16 years they were fugitives from justice. 

“Ms. Greig had a choice – to either assist or defy a Court Order.  She had complete control over her own fate.  Her repeated defiance translated into criminal contempt and has ultimately cost her more time in prison,” said United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz.  “First, her role in harboring James Bulger, a murderer, resulted in the victims’ families being forced to lie in wait for justice.  Then Ms. Greig’s continued and deliberate effort to protect accomplices extended the injustice, and she will now face the consequences of that decision.”

“The FBI has never wavered in its pursuit to bring Catherine Greig to justice,” said Harold H. Shaw, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  “Today’s sentence shows that defying a court order and refusing to testify about who harbored, or otherwise assisted her life on the run with Mr. Bulger, is not without consequence.  Her actions adversely impacted the government’s efforts to seek answers for Bulger’s victims, and hold accountable anyone who may have helped them during their sixteen years as fugitives.”

Ms. Greig, 64, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor, IV to 21 months in prison to be served consecutively to her current sentence, and three years of supervised release to be served concurrent to the term imposed during her prior conviction.  In February 2016, she pleaded guilty to one count of criminal contempt.  

Greig is currently serving an eight year sentence for her 2012 conviction of identity fraud and harboring James J. Bulger.  The sentence imposed today will be served after she completes her initial eight year sentence.

U.S. Attorney Ortiz and FBI SAC Shaw made the announcement today.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary B. Murrane of Ortiz’s Criminal Division.

(Boston, MA)  On April 27, leaders of community organizations from across the City will launch the Greater Boston Community Land Trust Network. Community land trusts are a critical and proven strategy to prevent displacement, promote permanently affordable housing and ensure that residents have a control over neighborhood development. As rising housing costs threaten the ability of low and moderate income households to stay in their communities, these neighborhoods are organizing to promote the creation of new community land trusts. 

Who: Tenants and homeowners from neighborhoods across Boston, as well as leaders from affordable housing and urban agriculture organizations, City of Boston representatives and elected officials

When: Wednesday, April 27, 2016, 6:00-8:00pm

Where: Great Hall of Codman Square Health Center, 6 Norfolk Street, Dorchester

The launch comes one month after the Mayor’s Office of Housing Innovation named community land trusts as one of four solutions for driving down the cost to build, buy, and own middle-income housing in the City of Boston. A recently released report by the Senate Special Commission on Housing includes land trusts as a strategy to mitigate gentrification. 

At the event, leaders of the Network will outline a set of policy recommendations to support the use of Community Land Trust as a tool for neighborhood stabilization by increasing access to land, capital, technical assistance and homeowner resources.

The launch will also feature the release of a report by Tufts University Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Department about the potential benefits of community land trusts in Boston, including examples of successful land trust collaborations in other cities across the country.   Neighborhood leaders will also talk about plans to develop land trusts in different neighborhoods. 

The Greater Boston Community Land Trust Network includes Chinatown Community Land Trust, City Life/Vida Urbana, The Coalition for Occupied Homes in Foreclosure (COHIF), Dudley Neighbors, Inc., Mattapan United, New England United for Justice, The Urban Farming Institute, Greater Bowdoin/Geneva Neighborhood Association, Alternatives for Community and Environment and Boston Tenant Coalition.

Residents and representatives from Network organizations will be available for interviews before and at the event.

MARLBOROUGH, MA. – Web Industries, Inc., innovative provider of precision contract manufacturing and converting services, is proud to announce the opening of the company’s first lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) production facility. Co-located within the company’s existing Web Boston location, the Lateral Flow Diagnostics Center of Excellence will provide companies marketing LFI tests with a one-stop outsource manufacturing solution that offers a reliable path from small-scale test development to high-volume commercialization of new LFI devices. The 6,500 square foot environmentally-controlled facility was purpose-built for automated reel-to-reel medical device production and features an in-house biochemistry lab, reagent deposition, LFI strip manufacturing, device assembly, and packaging stations. 

With the opening of this facility, Web Industries becomes the only US-based non-competing medical CMO to offer automated reel-to-reel LFI strip manufacturing, device assembly, and packaging services at commercial-scale volumes (>10MM). This allows Web to leverage its precision flexible material converting and multi-layer device manufacturing expertise and give companies marketing LFI devices a trusted contract manufacturing solution when bringing new tests to market. 

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s Board of Directors has approved tax incentives totaling $150,000 to support Web Industries growth in Massachusetts, based on a commitment by the company to create 10 net new jobs in Massachusetts this calendar year.

LFI devices are rapid diagnostic tests that typically provide results in less than 15 minutes, often without processing at a centralized lab. Home pregnancy tests are a very common example of an LFI device. Historically used for point-of-care medical testing, the demand for LFI tests is increasing as the technology is adopted by other life science, environmental safety, veterinary, and food and beverage industries. 

Web Boston is the company’s Center of Excellence for Medical Manufacturing and specializes in medical-grade material converting, device assembly, and the production of diagnostic tests. The company has manufactured many long-running, high-volume clinical diagnostic and personal health monitoring product programs that have been responsible for more than 100 billion medical tests over the past two decades, and the new LFI facility will create additional high-tech manufacturing jobs in the region.

MAYOR WALSH LAUNCHES REVIEW OF CITY EVENT MANAGEMENT TO ENSURE BEST PRACTICES

BOSTON - "With increasing frequency, Boston has become a sought-after location for events, often large scale multi-day events such as concerts and races," said Mayor Walsh. "We have also seen increasing demand for Boston as a location for film and TV production. These have proven to be powerful marketing and tourism opportunities for the city. We have also recognized that the bigger the event, the more complex it is to manage properly. And, I want to make sure that our agencies and staff have the right training and tools to do so properly."  Mayor Walsh has asked three local professionals with deep expertise in various facets of event management to serve on a committee that will oversee a top to bottom review of the city's event management. The local professionals are Larry Moulter, Executive in Residence at the Center for Collaborative Leadership at UMass Boston and CEO of the New Boston Garden Corporation, who is regarded as among the most knowledgeable of sports management experts and formerly served as CEO of Best of Boston, the largest event management company in the state; Bryan Rafanelli of Rafanelli Events, a premier event planner and designer in the country; and Colette Phillips of Colette Phillips Communications, a strategic public relations and event production firm.  In addition, Attorney Brian Kelly, who reviewed the city's interaction with Top Chef and has continued to provide advice on policies and procedures, will serve as a consultant to the committee to ensure an ethical process for all event managers.  "My intent is to build on what we learned from the review that Attorney Brian Kelly conducted of interactions and permitting procedures related to the filming of Top Chef in Boston. That report on Top Chef brought transparency to how the city interacted with that particular production and I want to make sure that we build on that knowledge, learn from it and are using best practices in this field," added Walsh. "I have a team of young energetic and dedicated professionals in this area. They need the right tools and some guidance to ensure that they know how to manage high-profile events." The city hosts numerous high-profile events every year, such the Boston Marathon, Sail Boston and an upcoming Adidas track meet that will be held in Boston for the first time this summer. Additionally, Boston serves as a filming location for feature films, currently Patriots Day and Stronger, and television programs.

    （Boston Orange 周菊子波士頓報導）波士頓清華校友會今年好豪氣，一口氣包下整間Ｍaki Maki自助餐廳，二百多名校友，兄弟機構代表，歡聚一堂，慶祝母校享壽105，為6月上旬的划龍舟比賽打氣助陣。

            創立於1976年，在2010年正式註冊為麻州非牟利機構，獲有501（C）3免稅資格的大波士頓清華校友會，在歷屆會長努力經營下，已然成為大波士頓最有規模的校友會之一，登記在冊校友逾二千人。

            會長庄曉丹，副會長向凱，高策，以及胡媛媛等逾20人的統籌團隊，花了許多時間設計，刻意安排了憑顏色，找同行做法，讓校友們即使原本不認識，也能從生物醫藥，金融、 工程，或法律藝術等不同專業領域，找到更親切，跨年齡層交流對象。

            這天，不但榮獲清華大學北美首屆“校友工作傑出貢獻獎”的該會創會會長，1936級土木系校友李詩穎，偕夫人雙雙出席。無名劇社骨幹李卓群，鄭郁婷的主持，也可圈可點。

根據會長庄曉丹的幻燈片匯報，波士頓清華校友會既對接校友總會，為初來乍到校友牽線搭橋，也支持北美其他地區校友會，總會，以及母校的各項活動。該會還設有波士頓校友助學金。除了每年都舉辦的夏秋野餐會，年會，今年還辦了李君，毛萍萍主持的醫療健康，向凱主持的能源環境，王寧，林巍主持的金融科技等同行小聚，任赫辰主持的“呼倫貝爾”波士頓清華第二屆高爾夫球賽，管越主持的第四屆“松柏梅竹”滑雪會等活動。

由雷鳴、劉春華擔任隊長的“健康跑步隊”，也陣容強大，在2015年內組隊參加了不下5次跑步活動，其中二次分別遠征了芝加哥，紐約。今年他們在1月份參加了寒冬勇士挑戰賽，4月再戰波馬，都有驕人成績。

波士頓清華校友會6月份將聚焦龍舟賽，林文健，姜波，蕭小強等隊長，刻正率隊積極操練，準備6月11、12日發揮該會已連續7年參賽的威力。

紐英崙中華公所大樓是否應列入美國史蹟名錄 4/29 華埠有公聽會

（Boston Orange 周菊子波士頓報導）4月29日（週五）下午2:30到4:00，在紐英崙中華公所大樓（90 Tyler St., Boston, MA)，將有一場公聽會，邀請社區民眾和本地歷史保護機構成員，以及中華公所代表晤面，探討把中華公所大樓列入“美國國家史蹟名錄（National Historic Register）”可能帶來的有形或無形好處，以及支出。

紐英崙中華公所大樓所在地的泰勒街90號是昆士小學（JSQ）舊址，從1847年建成，屹立迄今。

2014年時，紐英崙華人歷史協會經由麻州歷史委員會，從美國公園服務局（National Park Service）的鼓勵人們把國家史蹟名錄中未獲充分代表族群的重要史蹟地點也列入名冊項目，爭取到一筆款項。

2015年1月時，史蹟保護會聯邦顧問委員會（ACHP）在舊南會議屋（Old South Meeting House）舉行了一次”AAPI東岸聆聽會“。紐英崙華人歷史協會從那以後，就開始和麻州歷史委員會做波士頓華埠背景研究。紐英崙中華公所也指派了一名聯絡人，羅燕玲（Nancy Lo），協助研究登錄方向。

由於華埠社區大眾對這保護史蹟行動，所知有限。據悉，這次的公聽會是應社區要求舉行的。聯邦政府美國歷史保護會委員Terry Guen將出席主持會議。
