Boston Public Market Will Open July 30

Boston Public Market Will Open July 30
City to Gain Only Locally-Sourced, Permanent Year-Round Market of its Kind in the United States
BOSTON — The much-anticipated Boston Public Market is set to open its doors on July 30, bringing fresh, local food to the people of Boston five days a week and giving them a new opportunity to taste, buy, and learn about the bounty of New England. The 28,000-square-foot Market will house over 35 farmers, fishermen, and food producers from Massachusetts and throughout New England, selling items such as farm fresh produce; meat and poultry; eggs; milk and cheese; fish and shellfish; bread and baked goods; flowers; and an assortment of specialty and prepared foods.

The Boston Public Market, located at 100 Hanover Street above the Haymarket MBTA station, will be open Wednesday — Sunday, 8 a.m. — 8 p.m, beginning on July 30. A list of vendors can be found at www.bostonpublicmarket.org/vendors.

“Next month, our vendors will be selling hundreds of products from over 200 local small businesses here in the Market,” said Boston Public Market CEO Liz Morningstar. “We’re proud to support over 200 jobs and to have built a home for the local food economy in Boston.”

The Market is located in downtown Boston’s emerging Market District, next to the Haymarket pushcart vendors and the historic Blackstone Block, and it sits on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Freedom Trail. 100 Hanover Street also contains the Boston RMV branch, entrances to the Haymarket MBTA station, vent stacks for the Interstate-93 tunnel, and a parking garage. On-site bike parking is available and two Hubway stations are located nearby.

The Boston Public Market is the only locally-sourced market of its kind in the United States. Everything sold at the Market is produced or originates in New England. Boston Public Market vendors are proud to accept SNAP/EBT for all eligible market products.

The Market is a civic resource, educating the public about food sources, nutrition, and preparation. In addition to more than 35 vendor stalls, the Boston Public Market includes a 3,200 square foot demonstration kitchen. The KITCHEN, programmed by The Trustees of Reservations, the Market’s programming partner, will offer opportunities such as hands-on cooking demos, lectures, family activities, exercise classes, training and community events within the Boston Public Market. Programs are offered by a diverse group of non-profit organizations and for-profit partners, including America’s Test Kitchen, Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Boston Children’s Museum, Project Bread, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, UMASS Amherst, Community Servings, Let’s Talk About Food, and Boston Ferments.

"The opening of the Boston Public Market, much like the opening of any new civic organization, will enrich and enhance life in the Commonwealth, said Barbara Erickson, President and CEO of The Trustees of Reservations. “We are pleased to be a part of its success and to accelerate the understanding and appreciation of farming, local food, and locally sourced goods.”

100 Hanover Street was built as part of the Big Dig, and the ground floor had been vacant for over 12 years. The architect for the project was Architerra, a Boston-based design firm, and construction was done by Lee Kennedy Company.

“The design of the Market is flexible, durable, and utilitarian, and it’s meant to put vendors and their products first, architecture second,” said Morningstar. “That’s because the Boston Public Market is all about making the connection between food and farm, and allowing the people of Boston to meet the faces behind their food.”

The Boston Public Market is a public-private partnership made possible with the support of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the commitment of over $9 million in private philanthropy from many donors. The Market’s founding partners include the Henry P. Kendall Foundation, the John W. Henry Family Foundation, Holly and David Bruce, the Manton Foundation, The Trustees of Reservations, and the generous support of an undisclosed benefactor. The Conservation Fund also provided $3 million in financing, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the Market’s Health and Wellness Partner, is providing funding and content for health and wellness programming.

MAYOR WALSH LAUNCHES SNOW-MELT CHALLENGE

MAYOR WALSH LAUNCHES SNOW-MELT CHALLENGE
BOSTON - Thursday, June 25, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh welcomes you to participate in Boston's Snow Melt Challenge, a guessing game to encourage Boston residents to guess when all of snow at the snow farm at Tide Street will melt. Winners will have an opportunity to enjoy a "meet and greet" with Mayor Walsh.
"This is a fun and creative way for residents to come together and make light of what was a long, challenging winter," said Mayor Walsh. "Now that it's summer, we can have some fun and talk about how we recovered from the historic amount of snow Boston received. I'm surprised to see that we still have unmelted snow here!"
This winter, Public Works plowed 295,000 miles of roadway this past winter-roughly 12 trips around the earth - removed over 40,000 truckloads of snow from city streets, and melted 50,000 tons of snow at snow farms.
Most of the snow was carried to Tide Street and surrounding snow farms, but Tide Street's snow still remains.
Rules for Entry:
To enter, participants must tweet at @Marty_Walsh using the hashtag #BOSMeltNow, including the month and day they believe the snow will be fully melted.
Submissions are due by midnight on July 15, 2015.

Celebrating Olympic Day at Fenway Park
Olympic Day commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894. Every June, events around the globe promote fitness, well-being, culture and education. In Boston, we headed to the place where sport is celebrated all summer long: Fenway Park. During a pre-game ceremony, 170 local Olympians and Paralympians and hopefuls gathered in the outfield to form the Olympic rings.
Then Boston Celtics and Olympic basketball legend Jo Jo White welcomed Olympic hockey player Molly Schaus to the mound to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. A former baseball pitcher and softball shortstop, Schaus was thrilled at the opportunity to pitch at Fenway – and to gather with fellow Olympians. “We all have similar experiences,” she said. “It’s fun to reminisce.”

OLYMPIC POWER COUPLE

From Sochi to "The Amazing Race"

Steve Langton and Aly Dudek at Fenway Park

Olympians Steve Langton and Aly Dudek have a few things in common. Both competed in the 2014 and 2010 Games. Both consider themselves competitive. And both appeared together on the 2015 season of the reality TV show “The Amazing Race.”
Langton, a bobsledder, and Dudek, a short-track speed skater, first met in Sochi. When they began dating after the Games, they decided to take on a new adventure together and applied to the TV show. Unlike the Olympics, “The Amazing Race” is a competition you can’t prepare for. “You don’t know what your competition is,” said Langton. “You need to step back and say, ‘This is a game,’ and just have fun.”
Watching the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Olympic Day, both were also enthusiastic about bringing the Games to Boston. After seven years living in Salt Lake City, Dudek has seen the legacy of hosting the Games and feels that “the pride [of hosting] lives on there today.” Langton has an added bias, having grown up nearby in Melrose. “Boston is where my Olympic dream started,” he said. “To see it come full circle – I can’t imagine anything greater.”
