MAYOR WU, BOSTON EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES CELEBRATE NEW EMTS AND PROMOTIONS Ceremony honors 27 graduating recruits and 3 promotions to enhance emergency medical services in the City of Boston |
BOSTON – Friday, October 18, 2024 – Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) celebrated the graduation of 27 EMT-Recruits and three recent promotions in a ceremony at Boston Public Library’s Rabb Hall. The EMT-Recruits were hired as state-certified EMTs and successfully completed the Boston EMS Recruit Academy, an additional intense training program to ensure residents receive the highest quality emergency care. The 27 new graduates now join Boston EMS to respond to medical emergencies in Boston, enhancing 9-1-1 staffing for ambulances and dispatch operations. “Congratulations to the EMTs graduating today. You are joining a department that sets the standard for excellence in care and compassion,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “EMS is the critical link between our first responder agencies and our healthcare providers, answering the call all hours of the day and night in every neighborhood of our City. I am so grateful for your dedication and commitment to serving our communities.” “Becoming an EMT or paramedic is an honorable calling. It takes courage, passion and heart to do this job. On every shift, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone who needs your help,” said Boston EMS Chief James Hooley. “The call volume for medical emergencies in our city is at an all-time high with our members responding to more than 400 calls every day. Your work is vital. After completing this Academy, you are now equipped with the skills and knowledge to handle whatever comes your way.” The Boston EMS Recruit Academy is a full-time paid training program and includes classroom and field training for a variety of life-threatening emergency situations, including active shooter incidents, hazardous materials exposure, transportation accidents, recovery services, human trafficking, and mass casualty incidents. During training, these graduates responded to more than 3,700 9-1-1 incidents caring for patients suffering from a range of emergencies including cardiac arrest, behavioral health, illnesses and injuries, and serious trauma including shootings and stabbings.
“Congratulations to the EMTs and the newly promoted members of EMS,” said Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston and Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “This is not an easy career. Thank you for your commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care to people in some of the toughest situations imaginable. We are proud to have you join this department, and we thank you for your service.” This class includes eight members who are the first Cadet cohort to complete the EMT Recruit Academy in two decades. This graduating class is also the first to complete the academy at the department’s new state-of-the-art training and education facility in West Roxbury. The new 20,000 square foot space includes simulation rooms for training, a gym, multiple large classrooms, as well as two new ambulance bays. Four of the new graduates also participated in the most recent City Academy training program, managed by the Office of Workforce Development, that prepares Boston residents for various jobs including as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with Boston EMS. During today’s ceremony, Boston EMS also recognized the promotion of Paramedic Jaclyn Greenwood to Deputy Superintendent and the promotions of EMT Cliff Biggins and EMT Lindsay Robinson to Lieutenants. Deputy Greenwood, Lieutenant Biggins, and Lieutenant Robinson have more than 58 years of combined experience at Boston EMS that will strengthen the department’s leadership ranks. “I am so proud of our newly promoted Lieutenants and Deputy Superintendent for everything they have already accomplished at Boston EMS. And I am grateful their expertise and knowledge will now provide continued leadership to members across our department,” said Chief Hooley. Boston EMS is one of the busiest municipal EMS providers in New England, responding to more than 138,000 emergency medical incidents per year. To meet the growing demand in Boston, Boston EMS is actively recruiting to expand the department, add frontline ambulances, and better meet the rising demand for service. As a bureau of BPHC, Boston EMS is committed to serving Boston's residents through clinical excellence, emergency planning and preparedness, and community outreach. |
Roche’s Vabysmo improved vision in underrepresented populations with diabetic macular edema (DME) in a first-of-its-kind study
Basel, 18 October 2024 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) announced today positive topline one-year results from the open-label, single-arm phase IV ELEVATUM study evaluating Vabysmo® (faricimab) for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) in people from racial and ethnic groups that are often underrepresented in clinical trials.4
Initial data from 124 participants in the United States (US) showed that after one year of treatment with Vabysmo, administered every eight weeks, participants could read an additional 12.3 letters on average – equivalent to about two and a half lines on an eye chart. Results among major racial and ethnic groups represented in this study were similar. Hispanic and Latino participants started the study with the most severe disease and had an average vision gain of 14.1 letters from baseline at one year, equivalent to nearly three lines on an eye chart. African American and Black participants gained an average of 11.3 letters from baseline at one year. Vabysmo was well tolerated, with no new safety events identified.1
These data were presented in a late-breaking oral presentation at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2024 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, on 18 October.1 The study is the first retina trial for historically underrepresented populations.
“Vabysmo has been shown to be an effective first-line treatment for diabetic macular edema, and for the first time, we have data specifically demonstrating its ability to improve vision in Black, African American, Hispanic and Latino patients who are disproportionately impacted by this condition,” said investigator Jeremiah Brown, M.D., of Retina Consultants of Texas, who presented the data at AAO. “As a clinician who serves patients from these communities that are so often underrepresented in clinical trials, I believed it was important to take part in this groundbreaking study, and hope the findings will inform and improve the care we provide to our patients in the clinic daily.”
Results were consistent with the phase III YOSEMITE and RHINE DME studies.5 A secondary endpoint showed robust retinal drying with Vabysmo across these racial and ethnic groups, who, on average, achieved a decrease of 206.3 microns in central subfield thickness (CST) from baseline.1 Reducing CST indicates retinal drying, which is an important clinical measure, as swelling from excess fluid in the back of the eye is associated with distorted and blurred vision.6
“We established ELEVATUM to specifically evaluate Vabysmo in underrepresented populations,” said Nilesh Mehta, Roche’s Global Therapeutic Area Head for Ophthalmology. “Including diverse populations and perspectives is part of our broader Roche Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) strategy and is essential if we want to improve scientific understanding of diabetic macular edema and ultimately improve standard of care for all people living with this condition.”
Among the 124 patients, 45% self-identified as Hispanic or Latino, and 48% as Black or African American.1 The study was designed to facilitate enrolment and promote retention of underrepresented patients. For example, ELEVATUM was conducted at sites that treat a high proportion of these populations in urban, rural and community-based locations. In addition, eligibility criteria allowed participants with a haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level up to 12%.4 An HbA1c test measures a person’s average blood sugar levels over the past three months and is used to diagnose diabetes.7 Typically, the threshold for DME trials is an HbA1c level of 10%. However, HbA1c levels can be higher in Black, African American, Hispanic and Latino populations compared with Caucasians, meaning a lower HbA1c threshold can inadvertently lead to the exclusion of patients from various ethnic and racial groups.8-9
To date, Vabysmo is approved in more than 100 countries for DME and neovascular or ‘wet’ age-related macular degeneration, and in over 30 countries for macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO). More than five million doses of Vabysmo have been distributed globally since its initial US approval in 2022.10-15

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES HISTORIC AMOUNT OF FUNDING AWARDED FOR DIGITAL EQUITY IN BOSTON The
2023-24 Digital Equity Fund will support 36 community-based organizations
across the city with over $1.4 million. |
BOSTON - Friday, October 18, 2024 - Mayor Michelle Wu today announced that 36 community-based organizations will receive $1,418,000 in grants through the City of Boston’s 2023-24 Digital Equity Fund. This is the largest iteration of the program to date, reaffirming Mayor Wu’s commitment to closing the digital divide in Boston. The City’s Digital Equity Fund, managed by the City’s Digital Equity team in the Department of Innovation and Technology, is funded by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute’s (MBI) Digital Equity Partnerships Program. Since last year, the City of Boston has received over $5 million in grant funding from the Partnerships Program and has been contributing to the Commonwealth’s broader efforts of ensuring digital equity across the state. “As digital fluency becomes even more necessary as part of our daily lives, so does the need for accessibility,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “I am proud that our city is taking the steps to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to learn and build technological skills as our communities continue to transition to digital spaces. I’m grateful to the Digital Equity Team for their leadership and initiative for addressing the digital divide and the needs of Boston residents.” "It is crucial to have strong partnerships when carrying out digital equity work. This year's Digital Equity Fund features community-based organizations that are both technology-focused and those who have adopted technology work in order to meet the changing demands of our modern world,” said Santiago Garces, Chief Information Officer. “Approaching this work with unique perspectives will only create a larger impact on our Boston residents and ensure that their needs are met, whether educational, medical, or employment." This year’s iteration of the Digital Equity Fund awarded grants across three focus areas: Digital Navigation Work, Efforts to Improve Telehealth Programming, and Device Refurbishment Work. These initiatives will equip Boston residents with the skills and resources necessary to thrive in today’s workforce and adapt to the evolving economy. “This year’s fund demonstrates how technology can be a powerful tool for building more connected and resilient communities. By supporting grassroots organizations, we’re making important strides toward digital equity, knowing that this is an ongoing effort requiring continued investment and collaboration,” said Brian Donoghue, Chief Digital Equity Officer. Thirty-one organizations were selected for the Digital Navigation focus area, each receiving awards of $20,000 to $30,000 to be used over one year. These organizations will provide assistance with affordable internet access, device acquisition, technical skills, and application support.
Two organizations were selected for the Telehealth focus area, each receiving awards of $250,000 to use over two years. They will look inward and enhance their existing telehealth services, invest in additional capabilities for the healthcare providers, and increase support for patients who experience gaps in digital tools by providing education and training. “Franciscan Children’s is excited to be a recipient of Boston’s Digital Equity Fund Telehealth grant award. Through this funding, we look forward to launching a group therapy telehealth program within our outpatient behavioral health department and increasing access to telehealth services through digital health navigators, digital risk assessments, and other technological enhancements. We know these funds will make a great difference in the lives of the children and families we serve, enabling us to reach more patients through high quality telehealth care,” said Joseph Mitchell, President of Franciscan Children’s. Three organizations were selected for the Device Refurbishment focus area, receiving awards of $50,000 each to use over two years. They will execute programs providing workforce development, training, and other activities while refurbishing devices that are provided to underserved Boston residents.
“At TEK Collaborative, our mission is to promote digital equity and work to close the digital divide by providing internet-enabled devices to anyone in need at no cost,” said Jeff Williams, Founder of TEK Collaborative. “We have distributed over 8,000 devices across the Commonwealth and we believe in the transformative power of technology to bridge the gaps in our society. By distributing free computers, we are not just closing the digital divide, but are actively fostering a more inclusive future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.” “This announcement by the City of Boston will further the work being done to connect residents with digital learning opportunities and training statewide,” said MBI Program Executive Jody Jones. “We are proud to support this work through our Digital Equity Partnerships program to ensure all residents have the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.” In addition to the Digital Equity Fund, the City is expanding Boston’s public WiFi network, focusing on workforce transit hubs. The first new locations include Nubian Square, Mattapan Square, Maverick Square, and Egleston Square. The City is also expanding digital literacy classes to more Boston Housing Authority communities, with courses being taught by residents and volunteers, and making improvements to many computer labs to ensure that students have the most up-to-date technology. The City’s Digital Equity team, part of the Innovation & Technology Cabinet, works closely with community-based organizations, internet service providers, and other government agencies to connect Boston residents with reliable devices, affordable internet subscriptions, and technology training. The City of Boston’s digital equity & inclusion efforts have consistently been recognized by leading organizations such as the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Administrators (NATOA) and the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA).
