CAI 展覽 8/23

This coming Sunday 8/23 (2pm-5pm), at the Quarry, three big events are happening simultaneously:
1) the Closing Exhibition of our Stone Carving Symposium, four artists Miguel Velit, Mark Smith, Viktor Lois and Yin Peet (yes, this year I am one of the artists team passing on the baton for the "New Art Archeology"), we will show you what we have done over the past 3 weeks and talk about our individual caving process.
2) Miguel Velit, our Symposium artist from Peru, will have his painting around the studio for viewing. Many of you who have been coming during the Symposium have witnessed him working on his painting. When he paints, he appears to be in a trance with energy charged from the blue sky and bright sun directly above him at the Quarry, the result is invigorating.

3) Lastly, but not the least is our young master from Taiwan, Chou Yu-Chen. Her most unusual "print" show (none like it around the world). You will see her sitting on the huge 20 feet by 12 feet plaster slab in a Yoga/acrobatic position doing a very detailed drawing/painting; meanwhile, in the CAI Gallery would be the show of her print/painting which she created in the past 3 years in Taiwan. The contrast between the scale of her paintings versus the detail and complexity of their content is beyond words. Attached is the Press Release for your information

Acton, MA – Contemporary Arts International (CAI), a nonprofit art center, announces the opening an exhibition, “Innovative Print Making,” featuring small and large-scale, highly detailed work by Chou Yu-Chen, a young Taiwanese artist who has recently begun a six month residency at the CAI. The show will run from August 23 through September 30, 2015 at the CAI Gallery, which is located at The Quarry, 12.9 beautiful acres located at 68 Quarry Road, Acton MA.

On August 23, 2015 the CAI will host an opening reception for “Innovative Print Making” from 3pm to 5pm; a closing reception for the fifth annual stone-carving symposium from 2pm to 3pm, and the exhibition of “Miguel’s Trip” by Peruvian painter Miguel Velit will installed around the studio building for viewing as well.

At The Quarry, Yu-Chen has begun work on a massive twenty by twelve-foot piece that will ultimately be printed on four panels of Chinese rice paper. This is the first time in her life she does this big a scale, which CAI is proud of. Yu-Chen is now drawing a fish motif with oil pastels and a needle pen on a huge slab of plaster. She has sketched rough positions of her main motifs, but most of her work is spontaneous.

Yu-Chen is a 2015 graduate of the Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Normal University of the Arts. She has won several major awards in Taiwan, including the Kaohsiung Awards, and the International Biennial Print Exhibit: 2014 ROC.

According to Viktor Lois, CAI’s Artistic Director, “At a very young age, Yu Chen has created a unique technique in which she creates a large-scale, highly-detailed modern interpretations of the traditional Chinese landscape art. Since many Taiwanese artists now follow a strictly western style, it’s refreshing to see Yu-Chen use modern techniques to capture the traditional soul of Chinese art. ”

In spite of her youth, Yu-Chen understands that the common life is not common or simple. She sees life as a series of moments during which one has unsettling feelings toward one’s environment and other humans, caused by unfulfilled desires or the intrusion of imperfect feelings, such as jealousy. Yu-Chen uses deep, dark color to express emotions within her work.

Yu-Chen contrasts the large-scale of her work with a fine detail that draws the viewer up close to read carefully into the meaning of the painting. Several international artists who have commented that her work reflects the maturity of a much older artist, and her portrayals touch life’s core.

Visitors are welcomed to witness You-Chen’s creative process (call 617-699-6401 to schedule an appointment). We suggest a donation of $5 for students and $10 for adults, which will include a tour of the studio and the sculpture park. For a group rate (10+), please contact us beforehand so that we can better prepare for your visit.

Cindy Brown
