2018 Annual Career Conference & Job Fair Recap - 03/24

On March 24, over 150 attendees participated in NECINA's annual career conference and job fair. The day started with a warm welcome by Rose Hom from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, our gracious hosts for the event. This was followed by NECINA President Andy Li providing a brief overview of the organization. The first keynote speaker, David Hosmer, talked about creating individual performance plans (IDP) and establishing goals and steps to accomplish them. He further reiterated taking initiative to create your own and that individuals are responsible for their career development. The second speaker, Yaran Pan, an immigration lawyer spoke in Chinese on the topic of H1B1 and what updates will occur during 2018. The speaker session concluded with Matt Liptak and Matt Fitzpatrick from NetBrain sharing advice on best practices for interviews and presenting oneself during the process. After this, the day was divided into multiple sections, including breakout sessions by industry, mock interview and resume critiques, and the job fair with various companies including NetBrain, Liepin, and Huawei searching for talent during this time.

Keeping consistent with our mission to bring value and support to our community and young talent, NECINA once again put together a mock interview/resume critique session for this year's career conference. This year we had 12 exceptional mentors, who are leaders in their respected industries, to provide a wealth of options for the diverse career needs of our attendees. In combination, our mentors' expertise covered all the professional areas of biotech, IT and finance/business. Throughout the conference, our mentors passionately shared their professional knowledge with over 60 attendees, providing them with insights on approaches to interview and job search. Special appreciations also go to David Hosmer and Matt Liptak, two experienced HR manager, who enthusiastically consulted the attendees on interview tactics and resume layouts.

The resulting interaction created by the mock interview session benefited not only the attendees, who walked away with a much better understanding of the correct approach to effectively present themselves in their job hunt. But also, the exchange from mock interview gave participating mentors a strong sense of fulfillment that they have inspired many young minds and boosted their opportunity for a successful career.
Also, thanks to Boston Web Power, we are fortunate to have a video and photos
summarizing the event.

2018 YES Program Final Recap - 03/31

On March 31, NECINA YES program finally came to the final competition. Weiwei, one of NECINA volunteers, made the opening and introduced the agenda, judges, judging criteria, and the awards to the audience. NECINA YES invited five distinguished judges to the final competition. They were Catherine Blake, the founder of the Sales Protocol International, Connie Dai, the legal practitioner in business, immigrant, and employment, Harry Gao, the Chair of NECINA YES Program, Andy Li, the seasoned software professional, and Karen Lilla, the IBM communication executive.

During the final competition, even under the time pressure, all teams presented their ideas smoothly. Also, they all made established websites for their businesses in such short period of the program. Despite being constantly challenged by the judge panel, YES participants responded to the questions of judges confidently and professionally. This time, YES had a variety of interesting ideas, such as automatic pet feeders, which allows people to be able to feed their pets when they are away, and Pack-It Jacket that helps people stay warm outdoors in extremely cold weather. Five teams stood out among the fierce competition. JUVO Connect won the Social Impact Award for easily connecting the volunteer activities with high school students. The Best Presentation Award went to Ez Eats, a food app containing high quality recipes and nutrition guides. Ray Spray Tech received the Best Idea Award, and the team designed a product aiming to reducing the number of car accidents caused by sun glare. CAJA was the second place, and its idea was to build and expand vending machines for phone battery chargers nationally. Fixer Net, connecting individual phone fixers with people having broken phones, was the first place of the competition. Feb E Club Meeting Recap - 2/24

NECINA E-club had a joint meeting with the Forum "2017 New Tax Law Changes, Impacts on Individuals and Businesses and Tax Saving Strategies" at 2018 New England Chinese-American Professionals ( NECP ) Chinese New Year Gala and Professional Enrichment Business Forum at Newton Marriott on February 24, 2018.

2017 was an exciting year for tax law changes due to the arrival of the most sweeping "The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA)" signed into the law which we have not seen since 1986.  Given the magnitude of the changes and the variety of versions reviewed and debated by Congress, there are plenty of confusions and misunderstandings around the final law.  Both individuals and business communities are eager to see how such law changes will impact on their life.

Ms. Kathleen Zhang, CPA & MST, principal and founding member of Zhang CPA Group LLC with over 20-year-experiences, presented " 2017 New Tax Law Changes, Impacts on Individuals and Businesses and Tax Saving Strategies" at 2018 New England Chinese-American Professionals ( NECP ) Chinese New Year Gala and Professional Enrichment Business Forum on February 24, 2018 which was co-organized by NECINA/NECINA E-club, Ascend New England, OCEAN, CABA, 128 CUTE, HKA-MA.  Kathy holds Master of Accounting degree from University of Maryland and Master of Science degree in Taxation from Bentley University.  Kathy did a "deeper dive" on the variety of tax topics for 2017 and 2018 tax years.

Joined by approximately 80 attendees at this special E Club meeting on Feb. 24, 2018, Kathy discussed about the key 2017 and 2018 tax facts such as standard deduction, personal exemptions, gift exclusion, foreign income exclusion etc.  For people who sold their home in 2017, she provided in-depth analysis of how to accurately capture the cost of basis of the home so that the home owner could recover maximum investment they put into the residence.  Before transition to 2018 tax reform topics, she also touched on some of the important tax benefit provisions, such as education tax credits, energy tax credits with a heavy hitter on research & development tax credit etc.  With the conclusion on 2017 tax related matters, she started to introduce some of the highly publicized but confusing 2018 tax reform topics.  She illustrated some of the key tax reform provisions which could have significant impacts on taxpayers, such as reduction in individual and corporate tax rates, taxation of pass-through entities, deduction of home mortgage interests, state and local tax deductions, child tax credit, new business depreciation and expensing rules, repatriation of foreign dividends etc..

By using several comparison charts and table, audience could easily see the tax law change impacts on businesses and individuals. During her presentation, Kathy interacted vividly with attendees to answer their various questions on tax reform and other tax filing positions. Attendees appreciated the depth and broad areas Kathy covered during the session.  The atmosphere of the session was very warm, interactive, informative and helpful.

YES 12.0 Information Session Recap  - 9/30

YES Program 12.0 successfully held an information session on September 30 at ThermoFisher Scientific's Head Quarter in Waltham. There were 27 students who participated in the whole-day workshop to learn the basics of entrepreneurship and business planning. By the end of the day, 6 teams were formed and each gave a three-minute business pitch after only 30 minutes of research and discussion.

As the sponsor of YES program this year, Thermofisher Scientific showed enormous support: students were given a closer look at the company's product development process and some of the product demonstrations; Manager of the Leadership Development program and four selected members - each representing one of the four areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) - led a two-hour roundtable discussions to help students understand how STEM can help develop one's entrepreneurial spirits and leadership skills.

The workshop ended with a business pitch by the winning team from last year, who also gave brief advice on how students can get the most out of their time in the program.

The official kick-off of the first class is on October 14 and recruitment is still going on! If you are interested, sign up here. Registration closes at 11:59pm on October 10.

NECINA 2017 Annual Meeting - 06/17

2016-2017 NECINA Officers

On June 17th, NECINA held their 21st annual meeting at the Radisson Hotel in Chelmsford, MA. Over 100 participants attended the event with the prospect of learning more about the China-US relationship in several industries. The first speaker, Robert Williams from Insigma HengTian Software Ltd, started off with a brief summary on the history of China related to global finance where he outlined the gradual transition of third-party payments, particularly with Alipay. He then delved deeper into an overview of Chinese tech expansion into the Western markets. Yunlong Zhao, from the United Nations Strategic, followed Robert and his approach was on the direction the Chinese economy is moving toward, and the preventative measures it needs to take to avoid economic crisis. He offered several solutions including land privatization, strong development of manufacturing industry, and strengthening the political system in China, so private business can rest be assured. The third presenter, Walter Huang, came from a Biotech background. He talked about the rigorous process and regulations that are in place in China and why many medical and pharmaceutical companies want to move their companies to the US because of the lesser strict laws in place. Additionally, he stated that is is easier to bring investors to the US from China because of the reduced regulations.

They fielded questions from both the moderators and the audience on their perspective on China's growing influence in the US and the experience they have seen first-hand in conducting business with both regions. The event continued with awards handed out to the various winners of NECINA's YES and NEW Programs. This was followed by a summary of NECINA's accomplishments this year from NECINA President Tony Tian with a transition to the goals of next year from new President, Andy Li. After that, various awards were given to all the volunteers/officers who have served NECINA during the year in a display of appreciation. The celebration continued at the NetBrain HQ in Burlington, MA, where many of the same faces gathered together for a private cocktail reception filled with food, merriment, and networking.

NECINA 2017 Annual Meeting - 06/17

Overview:

Ten years ago, China was busy studying the latest innovation from the USA and applying these to local environments (Google->Baidu, Facebook-> Renren). Many USA companies were "outsourcing" manufacturing, engineering to China. Ten years later, we are now starting to see a reversed trend: manufacturing jobs are moving back to USA, big powerhouses in China now go west, and in some areas technologies and adoptions have leapt ahead of the west (mobile payment, O2O service models).

Coming to the year of 2017, there is continuous growth in multiple industries, from Sharing Economy, Self Driving Car, to Fintech Revolution and Artificial Intelligence. What are the trends and opportunities during this movement? What kind of collaboration will be happening between US and China? What career and business opportunities are there for professionals and entrepreneurs? You are invited to join us and meet with our distinguished speakers and learn some great insights from them.

Conference Ticket includes access to:
  • Conference and Keynote sessions 9am-4pm
  • Company and Startup showcase 9am -4pm

Participants of our Annual Conference are invited to our Evening VIP Dinner reception.
Dinner will be at 6:00 pm at NetBrain HQ, located at 15 Network Dr, Burlington, MA 01803 .
