(Boston Orange

Boston Common
Student event in Boston Oct 1 to support Hong Kong democracy
Please spread out this message.
On the night of October 1st, Bostonians and Hong Kongers in the Boston area are invited to gather in the Common with yellow ribbons, signs and candles (like we do on 六四, June 4th, in Victoria Park) to raise awareness for the ongoing political issues and to show our support for the peaceful protesters in Hong Kong.
The idea behind this event is to provide a setting where students can come together to express solidarity, concern, and support for the peaceful protesters in Hong Kong. The event is not intended to be a political protest. To that effect, the theme of the event will be "Stay Strong, Hong Kong."
We'll be bringing a large banner for everyone to write on and sign. At the end of the night we'll take a photo and send it to various contacts protesting in Hong Kong.
If you are a student at a Boston-area school, please list your school's on-campus event on the spreadsheet below and list what supplies your organization or you can bring to the Boston Common event! https://docs.google.com/
Christina Wong and HL Pickerell are in the process of creating a Tumblr to document pictures of people wearing yellow on October 1st. For those who are organising campus-based events, they would appreciate any photos you take that day.
Feel free to bring dinner and friends!
Please share this event and spread the word!

What's going on?
On 31 August 2014, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress announced that every Hong Kong resident could vote in the election for the city's Chief Executive, but could only vote for nominees selected by a pro-Beijing committee. This does not conform to international standards for free elections. The announcement is a disappointing blow to many pro-democracy Hong Kongers who have been campaigning for greater political reforms and free and fair elections for over a decade. In the lead-up to the planned protest in Hong Kong on October 1st, thousands of university and high school students have gone on strike to protest the Chinese government's imposed limits on voting rights.
What can you do to help?
- Wear yellow on October 1st to demonstrate solidarity with the protesters in Hong Kong. Encourage your friends to do the same!
- Learn more about the Hong Kong Democracy Debate from the news (see links below) and from any friends you have from Hong Kong.
- Spread the word! Change your cover photo/profile picture, re-share the Facebook event or anything in the news about Hong Kong, chat with your friends in the dining hall - every effort counts!
