Massachusetts Girls in Trades Announces Second Annual Conference and Career Fairs -- March 2 in Dorchester and April 13 in Holyoke

Massachusetts Girls in Trades Announces Second Annual Conference and Career Fairs -- March 2 in Dorchester and April 13 in Holyoke

LEXINGTON – Building on its initial successes, the Massachusetts Girls in Trades organization is planning its Second Annual Conference and Career Fair for hundreds of female high school students in Massachusetts.  In fact, it’s planning two.

An Eastern Massachusetts conference – open to high school students enrolled in vocational technical education programs – will be held on March 2 at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103 in Dorchester.  A Western Massachusetts conference will be held on April 13 at the William J. Dean Technical High School in Holyoke.

Massachusetts Girls in Trades was established to encourage young females to consider pursuing high-wage, high-demand careers in the construction trades.  The group was formed in December of 2015 at a meeting attended by representatives of Wynn Boston Harbor, Minuteman High School, the New England Regional Council of Carpenters, Sheet Metal Workers Local 17, Building Pathways, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and SkillsUSA Massachusetts.

“We’re making progress but we know there’s still plenty of work to do,” said Elizabeth Skidmore, one of the organization’s founding members and Business Representative for the New England Regional Council of Carpenters.  “We need to send out a positive message that young women can have great careers in the building trades.”

The first-ever Massachusetts Girls in Trades Conference and Career Fair, held in Dorchester last year, attracted more than 400 people, including over 300 students and teachers.  Students from vocational-technical programs at 18 high schools listened to speeches from successful tradeswomen, attended workshops about getting into the trades, and met with representatives from unions, contractors, and apprenticeship programs.

The March 2 event this year in Dorchester will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m. for registration.  Admission is free.  Lunch will be provided.  For more information on the Eastern Massachusetts conference, please contact Maryanne Ham by phone at 781-861-6500, ext. 7323, or by e-mail at massgirlsintrades@minuteman.org.

This year, Massachusetts Girls in Trades added a second conference to better accommodate vocational high school students living in Western Massachusetts.  That event will be held on April 13 at the William J. Dean Technical High School on 1045 Main Street in Holyoke.  For more information on the Western Massachusetts conference, please contact Lisa Clauson by phone at 413-206-5571 or by e-mail at lclauson@neclmp.org.

Vocational students interested in registering for either conference should contact their teacher, principal, or vocational director.

Schools are invited to attend either or both of the events, regardless of geography.

Principal sponsors of this year’s event in Eastern Massachusetts will be Wynn Boston Harbor, the Massachusetts Building Trades Council AFL-CIO, Boston Metropolitan District Building Trades Council, IBEW Local 103, and Gilbane Building Company.

MGM Springfield will be a principal sponsor for the Western Massachusetts conference.

The Massachusetts Girls in Trades board includes representatives from developers and contractors including Wynn Boston Harbor, Suffolk Construction, Skanska USA Building; Turner Construction, Liberty Construction Services, and Gilbane Building Company; union groups such as IBEW Local 103, Local 103 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee of Greater Boston, the Massachusetts Building Trades Council, Boston Metropolitan District Building Trades Council, New England Regional Council of Carpenters, Building Trades Training Directors Association of Massachusetts, and the Boston Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association; organizations such as the Building Pathways Pre-Apprenticeship Program and the Policy Group on Tradeswomen’s Issues; the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Massachusetts Department of Transportation Office of Diversity and Civil Rights; SkillsUSA Massachusetts; Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA) CTE Directors Group; Partnerships for a Skilled Workforce, Inc.; University of Massachusetts Building Authority; U.S. Department of Labor/Women’s Bureau; the newly formed Equity in the Trades Student Leadership Council; WGBH TV; and career and technical high schools including Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, Southeastern Regional Vocational-Technical High School, and Minuteman High School.

The group holds its board meetings at Minuteman High School in Lexington

MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES 2017 POETRY PROGRAM SUBMISSIONS NOW AVAILABLE
BOSTON - Wednesday, February 22, 2017 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced an open call for poetry submissions to be exhibited on the walls of Boston City Hall beginning in late April.  Once a year, the Boston Poet Laureate selects 30 poems submitted by Boston's literary community through this open call. The deadline to apply is March 20, 2017.

"Every year, we look forward to welcoming new poetry, written by our talented writers, to the walls of City Hall," said Mayor Walsh. "The pieces show great insight into a city that prides itself on diversity, hard work and education, and the poets are a prime example of the talent and energy that exist today in our neighborhoods."

Boston is known for its rich literary history and is also home to many talented contemporary writers whose work is enjoyed locally, nationally and internationally. In honor of the city's diverse and creative community, the chosen poems are printed and publicly displayed on the walls of Boston City Hall for 12 months. The goal of the Mayor's Poetry Program is to honor the great literary tradition that is vibrant in our city.

"We are pleased to release our annual call for poetry as part of the Mayor's Poetry Program," said Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston. "This is a wonderful opportunity afforded to poets around Boston each year and I look forward to reading the work of the talented poets selected."

"This year, we welcome poems on the themes of the City of Boston itself, our various neighborhoods, and, in particular, poems that explore the design and architecture of Boston City Hall and City Hall Plaza. Our program coincides with a series of new works, performances and events called Heroic Encounters: Artists Respond to City Hall," said Danielle Legros Georges, Boston Poet Laureate. "We're excited about the conversations these poems will spark."

Please click here for the application form. The deadline for submissions is March 20, 2017. The exhibition will begin in late April and is free and open to the public.

Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito Celebrate Black History Month with Launch of Black Advisory Commission

BOSTON – Today during Black History Month, Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito celebrated the launch of the Black Advisory Commission, signing an executive order and swearing-in several members of the commission who will advise on issues relating to the economic prosperity and well-being of the black community living in Massachusetts. Deborah Enos, Executive Consultant and former CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan, will serve as Chair.

“Our priority will continue to be the fostering of economic inclusion and equality for all citizens of the Commonwealth, and we recognize the challenges to advancement many in Massachusetts’ black community still face,” said Governor Charlie Baker.“The Commonwealth continues to be a diverse and global community, and through this Commission, we look forward to the opportunity for additional engagement and dialogue with leaders and experts in the black community and re-affirm our commitment to addressing their concerns and ensuring we promote their strength statewide.”

Members of the Commission include gubernatorial appointees with varying roles in many community, professional and non-profit organizations and represent a group diverse in gender, race, industry, region, age and education. The Commission will also include the involvement of the secretariats for Education, Health and Human Services, Housing and Economic Development, Public Safety and Security and Labor and Workforce Development. Appointees serve for a term of four years.

“Massachusetts’ black community has contributed greatly to advancing progress in the Commonwealth’s economic, education, social, cultural and technological fields, and we remain dedicated to supporting and enhancing opportunities for it to continue doing so,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “I am confident the members of this Commission will significantly aide in identifying more ways to create economic prosperity drivers and opportunities for every Massachusetts resident across the state and I look forward to their recommendations.”

The Commission will review and assess the priorities of the black community on a statewide basis and make recommendations to the Governor and Lt. Governor by identifying up to three priority areas to be addressed by the Commission over the course of the next two years. It will meet at least quarterly and will submit a formal written report on its work, findings, methodology and recommendations to the Governor and Lt. Governor every two years.

“Massachusetts’s strength comes from its diversity. Reestablishing the Governor’s Black Advisory Commission acknowledges the importance of having the black community’s voice and issues at the table,” said Senator Linda Dorcena Forry (D – Dorchester). “There are many areas this Commission will be helpful like working with the Office of Access and Opportunity in making sure the state increases procurement dollars for black owned businesses. Also, one of the priorities we want to tackle this legislative cycle is real criminal justice reform.  I look forward to continue working with the Baker Administration and my colleagues in the legislature in breaking down barriers and creating a level playing field for all of our residents,” concluded Senator Forry.

“Massachusetts has a vibrant and diverse community and I am focused on making sure that all are able to share in that prosperity,” said Representative Russell Holmes (D-Mattapan). “I’m proud to be involved in the reestablishment of the Black Advisory Commission and to further our progress in the areas of economic, educational and social justice here in the Commonwealth.”

Boston, Massachusetts February 23, 2017Visiomed, the French leader in medical grade connected devices and services since 1997, is changing the landscape of healthcare with their innovative use of modern technology providing patients with pro-active, custom-made solutions. Recognizing the rising demand of self-monitoring alongside the desire for instant and affordable healthcare without walls, Visiomed has launched BewellConnect, the most ground-breaking ecosystem of high-level devices developed with healthcare professionals that is empowering the lives of patients.

As of February 2017, Visiomed is pleased to open the first North American BewellConnect Headquarters in the Back Bay neighborhood in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.

“BewellConnect is at the forefront of the telemedicine industry and we are excited to produce significant advances in the healthcare industry,” says Olivier Hua, General Manager of Visiomed Group and CEO of BewellConnect Corp. “By creating alliances with the industry, establishing our presence in the region, we hope to change how people monitor their healthcare and improve their quality of life.”

In the U.S., BewellConnect is informing the future of health care by providing patients with alternative solutions that aim to help reduce the number of visits to the doctor, lessen the probability of hospital readmission, curtail health risks, promote prevention through daily self-monitoring, and streamline the communication with medical professionals since the patient is more informed of their own body.

“As a company constantly shifting and breaking industry norms, we want to join forces with life science innovators in the US to change the treatment paradigm for people with chronic diseases and take the first steps towards self-monitoring medical devices,” says Eric Sebban, CEO of Visiomed Group.

“I am happy to welcome Visiomed to Boston, and am pleased they have chosen our city for their first North American headquarters," said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "Boston is a global leader in healthcare, and I look forward to including BewellConnect to our roster of innovative, forward-thinking and fast-growing companies."

“Visiomed works at the intersection of medical devices and digital health, and they are a welcome addition to our innovation economy,” said Massachusetts Housing & Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash.  “Telemedicine holds great promise for both improved patient outcomes and experience, and for meaningful savings in our health care system.  We are glad to see Visiomed putting down roots in Massachusetts, and look forward to their future growth in the Commonwealth.”

“We are pleased to welcome Visiomed to Massachusetts and congratulate them on opening the first North American BewellConnect Headquarters in Boston,” said Robert K. Coughlin, President & CEO of MassBio. “We know that Visiomed will bring value to and benefit from our innovative healthcare ecosystem as they connect with new partners and work to improve patients’ lives.”

“Visiomed is developing technologies that have the potential both to improve patient care, and reduce health care costs through improved home monitoring and prevention,” said Travis McCready, President & CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.  “We welcome the company’s decision to advance these technologies here in Massachusetts, where innovation is transforming health care delivery.”
