China’s economic size and growth and prominence in today’s global institutions, political agreements, and economic development raise the need to examine how China affects the rest of the world and vice versa.  Particularly, we are interested in how Chinese movement of people, ideas, money and products affect other nations, industries and companies.  We seek multi-disciplinary, multi-method and multi-level studies on the globalization of China in general.

As significant part of the world’s economy, trade, and investment regimes, China is a center of influence on geopolitics, world institutions, and global economic health. We seek to showcase research on the internationalization of China from multi-disciplinary perspectives, including political economy, business, sociology, the humanities and environmental studies. Previous conference attendees hailed from across the globe, mostly from the academy, but also from government, international institutions, and business sectors.

As in past years, several points of distinction will mark this year’s conference:

Doctoral consortium: a doctoral paper development program will be given to early career researchers, with the purpose of helping them publish the ideas/papers in a top peer-reviewed journal. A special pre-conference workshop on Methodologies and use of Data in Chinese studies will be offered as well.

Languages of Presentation. All the double-blind reviewed paper for Scholarly Program should be submitted in English. Professional Workshop for business leaders will be conducted in Chinese, with English translation.

The best paper awards will also confer on the recipients priority review to the International Journal of Emerging Markets.

Asian American Studies Alumni/Campus Community Reception

Friday, February 23 at 6 PM - 9 PM
University of Massachusetts Boston, 100 William T Morrissey Blvd

the Asian American Studies Program has a campus exhibition in the Harbor Gallery (McCormack Building, 1st floor across from starbucks counter) until the end of februrary. the gallery is open regularly on mondays through thursdays from 1:00-6:00pm. we will host a culminating event on friday evening, february 23rd to give alumni and community friends an opportunity to see the exhibit and catch up with each other and current students/faculty.

we had an opening reception on feb 8th (see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/umass_boston/sets/72157690298660722/with/40140074862/).

the purpose and intention of the gallery exhibition are as follows:
***

During the past 30+ years of continuous Asian American Studiesteaching/learning at UMass Boston, our faculty/students/staff/alumni and community partners have modeled countless high-impact curricular innovations and pedagogical practices, including several examples showcased in this interactive exhibition curated by newly-graduated Art and AsAmSt student, Nia Dương (BA, Dec 2017) and AsAmSt Program coordinator, Gee Quach (Art and AsAmSt BA, 2013; TCCS MS, 2017).

In this new exhibit, we offer three overarching themes that are typically lit, though not often in neon.

1. Capacity-building with both students and communities to be stronger, healthier, and more resourceful over time through long-term commitments that invest holistically and ecologically beyond academic-only visions of student development or community service/activism.

2. Educational transformation with the intentions of not only creating new opportunities and visions for students through their UMB classroom experiences, but also modeling changes in the structure and culture of teaching/learning for preK-12, higher education, and community education.

3. AANAPISI knowledge and resource production to go beyond criticizing stereotypic frameworks and lack of data by generating our own contributions – including original community research and documentation, digital stories, literary anthologies, photo essays, food challenges, names guides, leadership portraits, children’s books, shadow puppet dramas, art installations, and more that represent the unique profiles, needs, and assets of AsAmSt students and their under-resourced, under-researched family/community contexts.

Threaded within and across the exhibited artifacts are many carefully crafted connections: intersectional dimensions of identity; 20+-year commitments with disaggregated, ethnic-specific communities across the lifespan from Vietnamese immigrant 2nd graders at the Mather School to Chinese immigrant elders and ancestors at Mt. Hope; multidisciplinary approaches with faculty, students, and alumni from health and social sciences to humanities and creative arts to policy- and practice-based fields; and real life real stories shared from past and present for the future.

MAYOR WALSH AND THE ELDERLY COMMISSION CELEBRATE BOSTON SENIORITY MAGAZINE'S 40TH YEAR

MAYOR WALSH AND THE ELDERLY COMMISSION CELEBRATE BOSTON SENIORITY MAGAZINE'S 40TH YEAR

BOSTON- Thursday, February 15, 2018 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Commission on Affairs of the Elderly today celebrated the 40th anniversary ofBoston Seniority magazine, a free City publication dedicated to informing and engaging older adults in Boston.

"For four decades, Boston Seniority magazine has helped us tell the stories that make our city so special," said Mayor Walsh. "It has connected and celebrated the people who know this city better than anyone: Boston's seniors."

Started in November 1977, Boston Seniority magazine has a circulation of 15,000 copies, 10 times a year. It is distributed to more than 300 sites across the city, including Boston Public Library branches, elder housing complexes, and grocery stores. The magazine features content that includes important resources and ways to access benefits, lifestyle and health tips, and feature stories about older adults.

"I look forward to this magazine each month," said Roxbury resident Mary A. Pennellatori, 80 years old. Residents of Chestnut Park in Cleveland Circle, pictured above, said, "We love reading the magazine! It's educational, gives us ideas for outings and ways to stay active members in the community."

Hundreds of vintage copies of the magazine are safely stored and preserved in the City Archives.

City Archivist John McColgan said, "Boston Seniority is an important part of the City Archives' holdings and documents the work of the Elderly Commission serving Boston's seniors. We're excited to share these magazines as a part of this important milestone."

"This magazine has chronicled our city and Commission's history, but even more importantly, it has captured our readers' milestones, too," said Commissioner Emily Shea. "It is a monthly celebration of our readers' voices and experiences, and we are honored to be a part of their lives."

BILLERICA MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF TWO YOUNG BOYS

BILLERICA MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON
FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF TWO YOUNG BOYS
BOSTON – A Billerica man was sentenced today in federal court in Boston for sexually exploiting two young boys over a five-and-a-half year period.

Philip Toronto, 43, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV to 40 years in prison and five years of supervised release. In November 2017, Toronto pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of children.
On Feb. 28, 2017, a search warrant was executed at Toronto’s home in response to multiple CyberTips that tracked the trade of child pornography over Skype to Toronto’s Billerica address. During the search, law enforcement recovered evidence of child pornography. Law enforcement confronted Toronto with evidence that some of the child pornography appeared to be homemade. Toronto admitted to filming his sexual abuse of two young boys: a five-year-old boy as recently as September 2016; and a now 15-year-old boy between 2011 and 2014.
More extensive forensic review of the devices seized from Toronto’s home revealed surreptitious recordings of the children in various stages of undress as well as videos and images of Toronto raping and indecently assaulting each of the boys.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling; Raymond Moss, Acting Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service; and Colonel Kerry A. Gilpin, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, made the announcement today. This case was investigated in conjunction with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, which indicted Toronto for the rape and assault of both boys. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anne Paruti, Lelling’s Project Safe Childhood Coordinator and a member of his Major Crimes Unit, prosecuted the case.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood. In 2006, the Department of Justice created Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.  For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov/.

BOSTONHIRES LAUNCHES, PROMOTING GOOD JOBS FOR BOSTON RESIDENTS
New hiring campaign to place 20,000 residents in good jobs by 2022
BOSTON  - Thursday, February 15, 2018 - BostonHires, a City-led effort to promote quality jobs for Boston residents announced by Mayor Martin J. Walsh in his Inaugural address on January 1, 2018, officially launched today under the direction of the Mayor's Office of Workforce Development (OWD). The campaign aims to place 20,000 unemployed or underemployed residents in good jobs - defined as jobs paying at least the living wage, with half of these offering employer-sponsored benefits - by 2022.

"BostonHires is about lifting up each and every one of our residents. The City of Boston has both a trained and ready workforce and an exceptional community of business leaders in need of that talent," said Mayor Walsh. "I invite our city's companies, small businesses, and community-based organizations to join BostonHires to ensure that all our residents have access to good jobs that keep our economy thriving."

Employers and job placement providers (such as job training programs and career centers) can join BostonHires by signing up to become either a BostonHires Champion or a BostonHires Advocate:
  • BostonHires Champions pledge to place unemployed or under-employed Boston residents in jobs that pay at least Boston's living wage. BostonHires Champions also pledge that at least half of the living-wage jobs secured will offer employer-sponsored benefits.
  • BostonHires Advocates pledge to place unemployed or under-employed Boston residents in jobs that pay at least Boston's living wage.
Any organization that employs Boston residents or places them in jobs is welcome to join BostonHires at owd.boston.gov/bostonhires. The website includes additional information about the campaign.

Boston's living wage, currently $14.41 per hour, is re-calculated each year to account for the City's changing cost of living.

Twice per year, BostonHires Champions and Advocates will report their numbers of residents placed that count toward the citywide goal. In return, BostonHires Champions and Advocates will be able to display the BostonHires seal on their websites and storefronts to signal their participation to the community.

"BostonHires gives us a concrete objective to work toward in collaboration with our partners," said Trinh Nguyen, director of OWD. "Working together in our various capacities as employers, job trainers, and workforce development professionals, we are pushing ourselves to create a more prosperous and equitable Boston for all."

"At Goodwill and Boston Career Link, the one-stop career center we operate, our mantra is jobs, jobs, jobs," said Joanne Hilferty, President and CEO of Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries. "Every day, we help Boston residents achieve the independence and dignity that come from good jobs. We connect employers in need of workers with qualified jobseekers and are excited to partner with the City of Boston to advance the BostonHires Campaign."

While encouraging good hiring practices through BostonHires, the City of Boston is also doing its part through a new initiative called City Academy. City Academy is a training pipeline for Boston residents to access entry-level City positions that offer good wages, health benefits, pensions, and opportunities for advancement. For more information, please visit owd.boston.gov/cityacademy.

The program is currently recruiting candidates for two tracks:

1) Hoisting and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training for jobs with the Boston Water & Sewer Commission, the Department of Public Works, the Parks Department, and Boston Housing Authority.

2) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training for jobs with Boston Emergency Medical Services.

For more information, please visit owd.boston.gov/cityacademy .
