Healey-Driscoll Administration Sounds Alarm Over Donald Trump’s Firing of 500 U.S. Department of Education Staff

Healey-Driscoll Administration Sounds Alarm Over Donald Trump’s Firing of 500 U.S. Department of Education Staff

BOSTON – Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Secretary of Education Dr. Patrick Tutwiler issued the following statements today on President Donald Trump’s U.S. Department of Education weekend firing spree, which he started by laying off 466 U.S. Education Department staffers on Friday.

"Donald Trump is weaponizing the shutdown to fire hard-working educators. Because of President Trump’s actions, our kids will lose the mental health care, tutoring, and special education they need. This needs to stop. The White House needs to end this shut down and reverse this decision immediately," said Governor Healey.

“It is unfathomable that the Trump Administration has fired nearly 500 U.S. Department of Education staff and intentionally did so using the guise of a federal shutdown and during a holiday weekend. The Department plays a critical role in safeguarding equal access to public education through transparency and accountability. Firing most of the office that handles special education, in addition to staff who support HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, TRIO programs, afterschool programs and more, is going to harm all students, gutting civil rights protections especially for students with disabilities and low incomes,” said Secretary Tutwiler. "Massachusetts does not have the resources to replace the oversight, research, technical assistance and support the federal government provides families and school districts. Make no mistake – this action is going to exacerbate longstanding challenges around wealth inequality and make it harder for students to access IEPs, mental health supports, tutoring and so much more. The fight to protect students’ civil rights is urgent. In Massachusetts, we will continue to fight for every student to have access to a high-quality public education and equitable access to affordable higher education opportunities.”

Massachusetts receives over $2 billion in federal education funding a year. The state is not able to fully replace these funds. The funding helps Massachusetts’ students, educators, schools, campuses, and communities. It helps low- and middle-income students afford to go to college. It provides funding to districts in low-income areas to help pay for teacher salaries and benefits, school counselors, and homeless liaisons. It also supports special education, including paying for assistive technology for students with disabilities, professional development and salaries for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and reading specialists, as well as transportation to help students get the services and programming they need and supports those services, like physical therapy, speech therapy, and social workers.

Offices impacted within the U.S. Department of Education as of 10/14/2025 include:

  • Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services

  • Office of Post Secondary Education (Student Support Services/TRIO; Institutional Service/HBCUs, HSIs, Tribal Colleges ANAPISI)

Governor Healey Calls for DPU to Launch First-Ever Comprehensive Review to Lower Gas and Electric Costs

Governor Healey Calls for DPU to Launch First-Ever Comprehensive Review to Lower Gas and Electric Costs

Urges DPU to scrutinize proposed utility rate increases;

Earlier this year, Governor Healey filed legislation that will lower energy bills and save people money

BOSTON — Today, as Massachusetts residents and businesses face high energy bills that could rise even higher this winter, Governor Maura Healey called on the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to launch a first of its kind, comprehensive review of gas and electric rates and charges to identify ways to lower customer costs. Specifically, she asked that the DPU review which charges on bills can be removed, reduced or modified.

“Energy bills are already way too high for Massachusetts residents and businesses. So, I’m calling on the DPU to launch a first-of-its-kind review to identify ways to get charges off bills and lower costs,” said Governor Healey. “Combined with my energy affordability agenda and legislation, we can save people billions of dollars for years to come.”

In her letter, Governor Healey also requested the DPU scrutinize proposed utility rate increases on behalf of ratepayers, including utility infrastructure to avoid unnecessary spending and reduce costs. She also called on the DPU to take action to expedite new solar construction before President Trump ends federal tax credits.

Governor Healey’s letter is the latest in a series of actions she has taken to lower energy bills. Earlier this year, she filed her Energy Affordability, Independence & Innovation Act, which would deliver more than $13 billion in savings for residents and businesses. The proposed legislation, which is currently under consideration with the Legislature, would save customers money by getting charges off of bills, bring more energy into Massachusetts, and increase utility accountability. This legislation comes on top of the Governor’s Energy Affordability Agenda which she implemented earlier this year, immediately saving people $220 million and providing for more than $5.8 billion in savings over the next five years.

Governor Healey Re-Establishes Governor’s Special Advisory Commission on Disability Policy

Governor Healey Re-Establishes Governor’s Special Advisory Commission on Disability Policy
BOSTON – Today, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Governor Healey signed an Executive Order re-establishing the Governor’s Special Advisory Commission on Disability Policy to improve opportunities for people with disabilities, their families and advocates to provide input on policy and program development that will reduce barriers to state services.
“It is very important to me that people with disabilities and their families have a direct line to me and my office,” said Governor Maura Healey. “By establishing this Commission, we are getting the input and perspective to make sure that our policies and programs are working for everyone.”
The Commission will be Chaired by the Massachusetts Office on Disability’s Executive Director Allan Motenko and will consist of at least 24 people appointed by Governor Healey based on recommendations from organizations that support people with disabilities. Membership will include a diverse group of people who have lived experience, family members of people with disabilities, advocates, a representative from the Statewide Independent Living Council, and executive branch staff who have oversight of state programs supporting these populations.
“One of the most valuable parts of my job is being able to receive feedback on how people are able to access our services,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “We are re-establishing an avenue for people to talk about their experiences interacting with state agencies and accessing state services.”
“Every day our teams offer supports to people across the state to help everyone live full lives in our communities, whether it’s job supports, assistive technology, day programs, or mobility training,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kiame Mahaniah, MD, MBA. “We want to make sure our own process makes our services truly accessible, and that individuals and families are able to easily find the office and specific programs or supports they need. This commission will allow us to hear first-hand from people with disabilities and their loved ones and advocates.”
The first priority of the Commission will be to assess where the concerns are for people with disabilities and their families when interacting with state government, as well as ways that the state can promote inclusion in the programs and services the state offers.

Mayor Wu appoints Dr. Guy Fish to serve on the Boston Board of Health

BOSTON PUBLIC HEALTH COMMISSION ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OF HEALTH APPOINTMENT
Mayor Wu appoints Dr. Guy Fish to serve on the Boston Board of Health
BOSTON – October 14, 2025, Mayor Michelle Wu has appointed Codman Square Health Center CEO Dr. Guy Fish to the Boston Board of Health. Dr. Fish brings a wealth of experience driving healthcare reform and prioritizing health equity into his new role.

“I am proud to appoint Dr. Fish to this new role, and I am confident his vast experiences across the healthcare sector will bring an important perspective to the Boston Board of Health,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “His commitment to prioritizing accessible healthcare and implementing health equity in practice will be an incredible asset to ensuring healthy and thriving communities.”
"I have sincerely appreciated Dr. Guy Fish’s partnership as a community health center leader, and I am excited to see him take on this new role on the Board of Health,” said Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston. “His deep understanding of what it takes to deliver integrated care in the community and commitment to addressing health disparities in Boston will greatly benefit all residents.”
Dr. Guy Fish, MD, MBA, is one of the country’s first MD/MBAs, and throughout his career has driven healthcare reform with an eye to equity. Dr. Fish’s multi-industry career spans international for-profit and nonprofit sectors from venture capital to ER and solo-clinical practice. He serves on the boards of Boston Medical Center, Capital Link, MLCHC, and the MA Health Policy Forum, and acts as an advisor to NACHC and the Eschelman Institute. His deep community ties are reflected in his current role as CEO for Codman Square Health Center, where he has focused on supporting underserved communities and connecting everyone with culturally congruent care.

“I am thrilled and honored to join the panel of Commissioners serving the city of Boston,” said Dr. Guy Fish, Codman Square Health Center CEO and Board of Health appointee. “The Boston Board of Health’s charter and breadth of responsibilities vigorously align with goals and objectives I believe are necessary to lift the health of our communities and create the conditions for all people to enjoy full and healthy lives. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful city.”

Combining his multi-stakeholder lens with his business and healthcare acumen, Dr. Fish crafted a revolutionary health delivery model, which was later adapted into one of Massachusetts' first viable, state-approved frameworks for a small healthcare institution to acquire a bankrupt medical campus.

“I am pleased to congratulate Dr. Guy Fish on his appointment to the Boston Board of Health. As the CEO of Codman Square Health Center, Dr. Fish knows the health challenges that many of the city’s most vulnerable residents face. I know he will bring the same care and attention he shows for Codman’s 23,000 patients to all of Boston’s residents in this role,” said Michael Curry, Esq., President and CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers. “Boston is a national model for public health because we prioritize health care access and health equity. I am grateful to Mayor Wu for picking a leader with a community health background to help guide our city as we continue to work towards these goals.”

The Board of Health serves an important role in helping the Boston Public Health Commission achieve its health goals for the city. Throughout the Health Commission's history, BPHC’s leadership and staff have relied on the leadership of the Board to provide valuable oversight, guidance, and policy development functions. The Board's support is particularly important as BPHC leads work to eliminate health inequities in Boston, strengthen mental and behavioral health interventions and resources available to residents, and respond to emerging challenges.
