A master of Japanese drumming and a Korean adoptee from Minnesota boldly convene an all-female troupe to perform Taiko, the Japanese drumming art that has been off-limits to women for centuries. As the early menace of Covid rumbles in the background, the group faces down hurdles to prepare for a historic performance in snowy St. Paul. Buoyed by dynamic drum performances and do-or-die spirit, FINDING HER BEAT is an energizing and uplifting story of music, cultural expression and sisterhood. |

A story about an art teacher returning to her childhood
home to mourn the passing of her grandmother. As she pieces together
the fragmented memories of her youth she finds herself coming
face-to-face with the problematic issue of her country’s fractured
history.
Through an artistic duty that this teacher gives to
students, a performance art process that has lasted for more than 10
years, a representational portrait of the island’s collective memory
begins to emerge; and in so doing, these young artists have initiated
a process by which Taiwan, an island forgotten by the world and in
the midst of forgetting itself, can now remember itself and construct
a new postcolonial identity through art.
This screening is followed by a live post-film conversation with
director, Hui-Ling Chen.
Film is in Chinese/Japanese with subtitles (English + Traditional
Chinese).
This event is co-presented by BAAFF and in partnership with Taiwan
Film Festival Boston.

Filmmaker Day’s Lee recalls her memories of her family’s restaurant
Lee’s Garden, one of the first Chinese restaurants to open outside of
Montreal’s Chinatown in the 1950s. As Chinese restaurants and the
food they serve continue to evolve, it is these early restaurants and
their cuisine that has captured the hearts and memories of people
everywhere. Through interviews with former customers and families who
owned other restaurants, MEET AND EAT AT LEE’S GARDEN explores how
these early restaurants played an important role in the social
history of Chinese and Jewish communities.
Meet and Eat with Us! Join us after the screening and Q&A
for Chinese (vegetarian) appetizers!

exploration balances a genuine interest in the TikTok community and its
innovative mechanics with a healthy skepticism around the security

platform. A cast of Gen Z subjects, helmed by influencer Feroza Aziz,
remains at its center, making this one of the most needed and
empathetic films exploring what it means to be a digital native.

CAAMFest Filmmaker
Summit
May 19-21
This year, CAAM Fest's three-day Filmmaker Summit celebrates the
coming together of communities to join strengths against every force
that stops us from expressing our authentic selves and telling our
stories. We celebrate the tenacity that transforms collaboration into
alliances, alliances to movements, and the sheer grit that pushes
movements to inspire change.
This year’s Summit sessions and Happy Hours will be hosted on Remo, a
platform which allows for small group engagement similar to an
in-person gathering.

TONIGHTThe Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association presents . . . The 36th Anniversary Gala is celebrating "virtually" this year!
Friday, December 11th | 6PM - 7:15PM Silent Auction December 4th - 14th
Even though there is no in-person gathering; no cocktail hour; no mingling; no dancing; & no hugging; we will celebrate together from the comfort of our homes and witness live performances from young people, auctioning of beautiful crafts and creative homemade baskets, and learn about our most recent COVID-19 efforts these past few months. What we have witnessed is the community coming together.
While CMAA worked with our funding partners to provide support to those in need, we also saw the "Humanity" in many community members who came out to lend a helping hand. They donated face masks, hand sanitizers, air purifiers, and much more during this extraordinary time. Join the Live event here.
Our celebration this year is focused on being an event that celebrates each other by everyone for everyone. Therefore we call it: CMAA's Community Celebration - Together With A Purpose! |

More From AARW: On November 19th, the Trump administration proposed a new rule to ban work permits for people on Orders of Supervision (OSUP): those who have been ordered deported but are temporarily released from custody. Join us in protecting our friends, families; and community members by submitting a public comment opposing the proposed work ban on work permits by Monday, December 21st.
