I wish you all a peaceful and joyous holiday season. Please consider donating to ACDC in your year-end giving plans. Our work to invest in the people and communities we call home would not be possible without the generous support of our donors, funders, and community partners.
ACDC will be closed from December 25 to January 1, so our staff can spend time with their loved ones and get restorative rest after another year of supporting the communities we serve.
Stay tuned for a Save the Date for our Annual Meeting in early 2024, where you'll hear highlights of our 2023 impacts. Please enjoy the updates in our last newsletter for the year!
Happy Holidays, Angie Liou Executive Director |

RAFT can cover utilities, moving costs, mortgage arrears, and overdue rent costs, as well as future rent in limited situations.
ACDC is still helping community members apply with RAFT applications! Starting January 2024, the new contact for the bilingual RAFT hotline will be Julia Zhu, ACDC's Building Blocks Manager, and Alice Huang, ACDC's Housing Counselor. Both Julia and Alice are fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

We want to thank everyone who attended ACDC’s Hudson Street Stoop Opening Celebration for Dancing Dragon. Dancing Dragon will be on exhibit at One Greenway Park (between 66 & 88 Hudson Street) through Fall 2025 - come by One Greenway Park and enjoy the swings while connecting with family, friends, neighbors, and community members!
Participants learned about the history of the Hudson Street Stoop (HSS) site and Parcel 24, made their own dragon puppet, contributed to the Dancing Dragon memory book, and met the installation artists.
Thank you to Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy and Sifu Mai Du for the inspiring dragon dance, the special eye-dotting ritual at Dancing Dragon to bless the structure, and for sharing the meaningful traditions and cultural context of the dragon dance.
Thank you, Kwong Kow Chinese School's K-pop dancer group, for your energizing performances! Thank you to Tea Do for generously donating hot tea to keep everyone warm. Last but not least, we’re appreciative of all of the volunteers who made this event possible, as well as City Council President Ed Flynn's support of the event.
The event was in collaboration with Humans of Chinatown (photographed by Mel Taing), a portrait and audio series capturing the essence of "What makes Chinatown sacred?" as part of the Chinatown Cultural Plan.

ACDC's Emma Ishida visits DC
|
|
Emma is pictured in a white and blue jacket, with their CITC Fellow cohort. |
|
Our Malden Youth Programs Associate, Emma Ishida, was one of this year's Community in the Capital Fellows, a policy advocacy fellowship from June to October for staff at National CAPACD's member organizations across the US. ACDC has been a longtime CAPACD member, and several of our staff have served as CITC Fellows!
Beyond touring the White House and meeting the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI), Emma had the chance to learn about other fellows’ work as well as federal-level policy advocacy.
Emma met with Senator Ed Markey’s office to advocate against green gentrification in Malden and talk about the Inflation Reduction Act and some state-level policies like the HERO Bill.
The biggest takeaway from this fellowship for Emma was “connecting with people doing similar work across different communities in the US to better understand federal-level policy advocacy and how it might impact our local communities.” |

United Way of Mass Bay Partners with ACDC |
|
| ACDC is proud to be selected as one of 124 new partners of United Way of Massachusetts Bay, a recognition of our organization’s potential to advance an economically just region where access to financial well-being is universal, and prosperity is shared across race and ethnicity. |
|
|
The harrowing, ongoing conflict we are witnessing serves as a reminder to look after our neighbors and show care for one another. What systems and community values can we uphold (or break down) to ensure that individuals and families have safe and affordable homes, have the means to thrive and dream, feel a sense of belonging and connection with their neighbors, and play active roles in shaping their neighborhood? At ACDC, we all reflect on this often in our work on both micro and macro levels, and we are grateful to our many partners and supporters who share our commitment to investing in people and communities we call home.
The change of seasons coincides with some exciting updates and transitions at ACDC. We are excited for you to meet our new staff and share progress on our latest impacts in this month's newsletter.
Warmly, Angie Liou Executive Director |

We held a second Impact Advisory Group and public meting on November 16 to update the community on the design process of the Parcel R-1 development. Parcel R-1 is located on Hudson Street, across from our One Greenway building, and will create over 100 income-restricted rentals and condos and bring back a Chinatown Boston Public Library branch. As the only Boston neighborhood without its own BPL branch, this is a major milestone for the community. We are excited to make this possible following decades of organizing by community leaders and the Friends of the Chinatown Library. |

A-VOYCE Youth Learn About Climate Resilience |
|
Recently, our Chinatown and Malden A-VOYCE cohorts partnered with incredible community organizations to learn about climate resiliency work in their neighborhoods!
Malden youth explored the Malden River and learned about the intentional community-based process of building a climate-resilient park along the river. They used temperature gauges to spot the temperature difference between a cement lot and land by the river. Youth enjoyed meeting with Diana Jeong, co-founder and board member of GMAACC, who gave a tour of downtown Malden. Diana shared her family's immigration history and involvement in the community.
Our Chinatown program youth went on a Chinatown History tour led by ACDC staff and explored the Greenway from Chin Park to Rowes Wharf Plaza, learning about the importance of green space for communities in Boston.
These tours ground our youth in their neighborhood's history and community initiatives, informing the projects our youth will design and implement in the spring. Thank you to the Mystic River Watershed Association, Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition, and The Greenway for sharing your knowledge and time! |

“The problem with Chinatown has been, it’s very, very difficult to find sites to put affordable housing,” said Liou. “You don’t often get opportunities to do bigger developments. When you can add even 50 or 60 units, that’s a significant add to the inventory.” |
| Angie shares her thoughts in a radio interview on the PLAN: Downtown initiative to revitalize downtown Boston, "We want to make sure that we can protect the [affordable] housing...to protect the residents who have been very vulnerable to evictions." |
